  1. QUOTE (ROC Sox Fan @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 09:22 PM) Griffey at under 3 million platoon with Anderson/Dweezy/Thome. Hopefully he signs with the Mariners in the next few days so this is not a possibility.
  2. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) I know its been mentioned in here before, but who here plays Socom Confrontation on any sort of regular basis? I got it off Amazon Marketplace a few days ago for $40 w/ the headset, the box was opened but nothing was touched, couldn't pass up a deal like that. I've been playing it off and on for the past 24 hours (turns out, after taking a 3 or 4 year break from SOCOM I kind of suck) and I'm sure I'll be on there a fair amount until Killzone 2 ships. I've been going back to the same room every time, US Central 4 - 8v8 Elimination 2. All I want to do is play a simple game of Desert Glory Elimination but the servers are completely different from SOCOM II.
  3. Well supposedly Jerry Reinsdorf is leaving #1 open in honor of Derrick Rose.
  4. QUOTE (rangercal @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 02:02 AM) crap Good news from Brian Hanley: http://www.suntimes.com/sports/basketball/...-bull11.article
  5. Updated to include all new player numbers.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 02:56 PM) Could be, but it makes zero sense to me they don't offer Blanco $1 million or even less and you know what you're getting, unless he's holding out hope for Rodriquez, who I think is done. I would rather have Blanco. I suppose they could have been in on Blanco but he saw SD as a place he'd be guaranteed more playing time. Yeah Blanco is going to get close to a 50/50 split with Nick Hundley whom he'll get to mentor (something he supposedly enjoys doing) plus he gets to play half his games in and live in San Diego, assuming he doesn't mind losing 100 games I think he made a wise decision.
  7. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) Well, they gave Viciedo a big league uniform number--good ole number 24. Looks like all the new players got numbers Betemit - 15 Colon - 40 Allen - 60 Jimenez - 57 Lillibridge - 18 Link - 61 Marquez - 48 Nix - 5 Nunez - 65 Santeliz - 63
  8. Chris Stewart hit .356/.408/.489/.897 in 100 PA against lefties last season at AAA Scranton. Though this follows no pattern for Stewart this could be KW's logic.
  9. Yeah, Armstrong makes the most sense if he can play good defense (which he supposedly can). He hasn't hit lefties well in the minors but he's been excellent against righties and it hasn't really been a true platoon at the catcher's position since AJ joined the team, the backup's PA have been split about 45/55 between righties and lefties. Ivan Rodriguez would be a godsend.
  10. QUOTE (MO2005 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 11:35 AM) Yeah and did you look at the rest of the teams stats down the stretch besides Alexei and Thome? I don't recall many hitting .300? It's unfair for many of you to bash Wise. Look at what we have in center right now...Owens, Anderson, or Wise? Brian cannot hit and believe me if you watched any of the 06 season I recall Anderson being under .200 for like the first half of the season when the team was on fire. Imagine how he'd do if he played full time when the team was playing crappy? Owens I don't remember being any better other than he could probably steal 40 bags. But how is that possible if the guy has trouble getting on base? If you could tell me out of those three both offensively and defensively should start based on prior statistics. Wise is my pick at the bottom of the order hitting in the 9th spot. Just my opinion... September numbers: Wise - .206/.271 Griffey - .271/.348 Uribe - .271/.303 Thome - .205/.314 Dye - .268/.325 Cabrera - .330/.383 Ramirez - .211/.286 Konerko - .260/.321 Pierzynski - .224/.258 Again, explain to me (using your logic) how having the 2nd lowest batting average and 2nd lowest OBP for the month of September made him one of the most valuable players. I'm also waiting for you to start naming all his big hits.
  11. QUOTE (MO2005 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 01:54 PM) OBP 2008 Stats Wise .293 Anderson .290 Owens .250 Ok then by your logic (f*** sample size) Anderson and Wise are capable of reaching base at a very similar rate. Wouldn't Anderson's VASTLY superior defense and youth make him a more valuable ballplayer? Also looking at their career major league numbers: Owens .268/.321 Wise .214/.254 Anderson .221/.277 Wouldn't these numbers prove (again, by your logic) that both Anderson and Owens are superior offensive players?
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 11:40 AM) Kalapse, Murder is different than cheating in a sport. The better question would be: If you could get a perfect score on the SAT and only have a 1% chance of being caught, would you? That's not what I was getting at. I just wanted to see where that particular poster drew the line. Looks like I won't get an answer.
  13. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) Absolutely. Just don't get caught. I'm curious. If you were offered a substantial sum of money to kill another human being and you were 99% certain that you would get away with it, would you go through with it?
  14. Major League Baseball has expressly prohibited the illegal use of performance enhancing drugs since 1991 but didn't add a punishment for the offense until 2004. Is it okay to break it rule if it has no punishment?
  15. I just went back and checked the game logs for each White Sox victory DeWayne Wise participated in last season and his name appears in the top 5 plays only 2 times the entire season. Twice.
  16. Alexei's granny vs the Tigers is bigger than anything DeWayne Wise will ever do. Wise is a bad baseball player who got hot for a week (a week in which the Sox had a losing record) then finished the season with an absolutely horrible slump. 1-10 in the final 3 games (CLE, DET, MIN) and 0-for the big Twins series. 3-31 to finish the season. He hit a grand slam in the 8th inning of a tied ballgame vs DET and a couple solo HRs in a blowout in Kansas City. THAT'S IT. Baseball Reference has the top 5 plays for each game based on WPA (win percentage added). In the month of September DeWayne Wise's name appears twice: he had the #1 play in the second game of the Detroit double header in which he hit the granny and he had the #5 play (a bunt basehit that moved Cabrera to 2nd in the 4th inning) in the first game of the double header. His name makes no other appearance in a White Sox Septembe victory. Talk about overstating a player's worth.
  17. QUOTE (onedude @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) Is it taking anybody a long ass time to download and install MLB the show 09? I'm installing now, but I had to let it download overnight. I downloaded it a few days ago, took about 5 hours.
  18. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 09:26 AM) The great thing about Burn Notice is that they know what the show is and don't take it too seriously. It's consistently entertaining. It's just a f***ing cool show. They know they're not reinventing the spy thriller, they're just trying to put together one badass episode after another. They found a formula that works, Jeffrey Donovan round house kick to the head of a bad guy = badass, Bruce Campbell doing anthing (preferably with a shotgun) = badass, throw in some cool homemade gadgets, a few explosions, some gunfire, a person in need and a long con and you have a very entertaining show. My only complaint with the show is the actress who plays Fiona, she has to weight about 70 pounds and it looks like she struggles to move her lips because her face is so tight, she's also not much of an actress. But that's a very small gripe.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 04:59 PM) So you're saying if he makes an All Star team it doesn't make him an all star calibur player, and although he won a Silver Slugger, that doesn't necessarily make him Silver Slugger-calibur. But then said he can't be considered Gold Glove calibur because he's never won the award. That's not very consistent. If you're saying players get these accolades without deserving them, that would mean players who do deserve them don't get them. While I agree he didn't deserve the SS award, its ridiculous to say he's not or at least was a GG-calibur defensive player even without winning the award. If a player has an MVP-calibur season, it doesn't mean he won the MVP, it says his season was worthy enough to win one. There were 2or 3 years at least, no one would have scratched their heads if Crede won a GG. Well defensive ability is notoriously difficult to quantify, there are no mainstream statistics that I can immediately turn to and base a solid argument off of but the lesser known numbers/metrics we do have and my eyes tell me that Adrian Beltre has been a better defender than Joe Crede since joining the American League (you could also make an argument for Brandon Inge, Scott Rolen and now Evan Longoria) and the Fielding Bible backs this up. Merit is fairly easy to determine when talking about a Silver Slugger award or an All Star appearance but it becomes a bit more difficult with a defensive award. I probably could have elaborated further in the original post but you got me, what I posted was pretty hypocritical, mentioning the Gold Glove was stupid on my part, though the Fielding Bible is different. Joe Crede has always had the potential to be the best at his position but I don't think he's ever been the best defender at his position in his league for a given year and I've never seen a compelling statistical/unbiased argument to the contrary.
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 04:49 PM) Um, can you tell me what the hell a Bible award is? http://www.fieldingbible.com/
  21. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 04:28 PM) Could be because he made the All-Star team last season? QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 11:57 AM) He was and is a gold glove all-star caliber player Big difference between being named to an All Star Team and being an All Star caliber player. Joe Crede has never had an All Star caliber season even though he's been named to a team, he's also never even come close to a Silver Slugger caliber season but was awarded one in 2006 because everyone hates Alex Rodriguez. It's also rather silly to call a player gold glove caliber when he's never won a gold glove or a Fielding Bible award.
  22. Dick Allen is right on this one. Just because it's been reported as a 4 year, $10M deal doesn't necessarily mean the contract contains a standard release clause. I'd venture to guess that it does but there's been no confirmation in the media that I can find. Draftees such as Rick Porcello and Andrew Miller have signed 4 year major league contracts but they'll be arbitration eligible when those deals are up. I can't see Jaime Torres accepting any offer that didn't include a release clause simply because a 1 month stint in the minors to start the 2009 season would result in his client being under team control for 7 years or through his age 26 season. I can't recall a single big time international player signing a major league deal that didn't include a release clause. I know Takashi Saito didn't have one but that was a minor league deal.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) Educate me. Why do they want to dump him already? They have no where to play him and his contract is no longer seen as affordable.
  24. Yeah I fail to see how being honest with the fans makes him a smartass. Given the current state of the economy and the subsequent effect it's had on the free agent market in baseball there's absolutely no reason to throw large sums of guaranteed money at players who are still 4 yeas away from free agency. If the economy rebounds (hence the Dow Jones remark) and the price of players begins to rise back to the usual levels then he can think about locking up some of these younger players and buying out a few of those potentially costly free agent years.
