Help save the Florida Marlins!
QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 04:01 PM) I can't believe I'm seeing Sox fans use the "attendence = you deserve to lose your team" argument. What hypocrisy. I agree with those who have spoken in favor of the Fighting Fish. It's different when you're team wins championships consistantly as opposed to not supporting a losing team.

Cubs nearing big trade with Rangers?
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 10:34 AM) Another question to ask: Why do the Rangers always seem to be trying to trade Soriano? They have enough offense and bad deffense to make up for the loss of Soriano. They need pitching more than anything and Soriano should be able to bring them that.

Cubs nearing big trade with Rangers?
The Cubs would win this trade easy, in essence they'd be trading LaTroy Hawkins, Todd Walker, Ronnie Cedeno + 2 Spects for Alfonso Soriano and Kevin Mench That's 1 great offensive player and 1 very good offensive player for 2 pitchers they got for Hawkins, Todd Walker who isn't nearly as good as Soriano and some prospects like Cedeno and probably 2 pitchers. If this trade did go through, it would be a good trade for the Cubs to boost their offense though they reallly should be worrying a little more about their starting pitching at this point in time.

Help save the Florida Marlins!
QUOTE(SnB @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 10:21 AM) while saying that, you know there are a few thousand die hard marlins fans that are just as big of fans of their team as we are. Everyone in the country seems to think chicago can't support 2 baseball teams, but we know how many white sox fans there really are. Weren't we in their shoes a few years back? No, not really. The Sox hadn't won anything in a long ass time leading up to '05 season yet we still drew decent numbers. The Marlins have won 2 world series in a 6 year span and still can't draw. If people won't come out to see a winning team, then the club should be moved.

Help save the Florida Marlins!
No offense or anything but Miami does not deserve a major league baseball team. If Marlins fans can't support a team that's won 2 world series over a 6 year span then the Marlins should be moved out of there. Maybe they can find a fan base that will support a winning organization.

ARow Appreciation Thread
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 11:54 AM) Your opinion is of the group that has too much of an emotional tie to Sox players. You guys never want to see any fan favorites leave the team. We needed a lefty power bat and a #3 hitter. Now we have both. If Thome is healthy, this trade has immediately improved our offense. And I doubt the Sox would trade for Thome without knowing that he would be 100% healthy to start next season. All Brian Anderson has to do is play good defense and put up around a .736 OPS and we will not miss Rowand, the player. We will all miss Rowand, the fan favorite though. Why would you post this in a Rowand appreciation thread?

Mike Sweeney
QUOTE(SoxPride56 @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 01:50 PM) because he is a FA You're right. He may be old but I've always kinda liked him.

Mike Sweeney
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) You may as well keep Gload if you just want a backup first baseman. Mark Sweeney may be 36 but he has proven that he can be a very good OBP guy off the bench for a team and play a few different positions. He's a very good bench player.

Mike Sweeney
QUOTE(SoxPride56 @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 01:47 PM) What about getting Mark Sweeney from the Padres, I belive he is a FA. He is mostly a 1B, but also has experiense at RF and LF, and about 4 innings in CF. I think he would be a good option off the bench. What do you think? Why would the Pads unload a bench player like Sweeney who consistently puts up a 800+OPS?
-
Mike Sweeney
I've said this around 100 times. Sweeney is the worst possible fit for the Sox. 1.) He'd make $12.5M a year with the Sox, you could resign Konerko for not much more. 2.) He can't stay healty anymore. He can not be counted on to play a full season and the Sox have very minimal backup plans for 1B. 3.) He can't really play 1B anymore either, he's a defensive liability and is pretty much a full time DH at this point in his career. I really don't want to see Thome starting at 1B for the Sox next year. EDIT: Not to mention the fact that KC would never trade him to the Sox anyway. They turned down a Kothchman for Sweeney trade at the deadline last year, the Sox really couldn't match that offer anyway.

Just for shits and giggles
QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 01:38 PM) http://www.mlb4u.com/chw.html lists Boras as agent. What is interesting is if you google Crede Boras there is a quote from Reinsdorf that confirms Boras, but the link goes to a different article. I believe Jim was talking about Blalock when saying Boras was not his agent.

Just for shits and giggles
Hank Blalock's agent is Eric Goldschmidt not Scott Boras. Also, there's no way in hell Texas would ever make that trade.

White Sox Payroll
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 10:32 PM) I'm sorry, I don't know where, but I think there has to be something wrong with your math. Carl Everett and Aaron Rowand made $6 million combined last season. That is basically exactly what Thome will make this season. Put the buyout of Carl into that...and the Thome Trade basically makes us come out completely even with last year's team. Furthermore, we're saving $4.5 million by buying out Thomas, and we have $8.75 million or so available because of Konerko. Combine those and you can offer Konerko a decent deal including his cash and Thomas's cash and with just that our payroll should still be roughly where it was at in 2005. The increases beyond that should be giving guys long term deals, which I could see costing us $5-$8 million, and that puts us somewhere in the low $80's. I have everyone's '06 salaries in an Excel Spreadsheet. There's no problem in my math.

White Sox Payroll
Well, we'll be paying Thome what? About $6M this year? And let's assume we give Garland a nice 3 year deal worth $7M for next year and we give Pierz a 3 year deal worth $4M next year. Crede gets $2.5M lets say. Without Kong that would put the teams payroll at ~ $75.475M Then if Kong recieves about $13M next year from us that puts the payroll at ~ $88.475M This includes payroll includes Ross Gload and excludes Timo Perez. There are also many approximations as well. So if salaries do fall roughly where I believe they will we'll have ~ $1.5M to spend on Bench help if the Sox go with a $90M team payroll and don't end up dumping anymore players. (Marte - $2.25M next year) This payroll includes the buyouts to Frank and Carl and is made up of 24 players. So there is one spot open.

JIM THOME FOR 7.2 MIL/YEAR??
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) You know, I agree with you on most of that...but let's just note 1 thing. "Hey, remember when you asked me what the definition of irony was and I said AIEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" There's a lot of hypocracy being spewed around here as of late.

Insurance for Anderson in CF
QUOTE(TheHawkaroo @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 07:01 PM) Other possible CF's available. Juan Encarnacion (Not bad) Johnny Damn (NO) Personally I like Jones. Might I ask why?
-
Insurance for Anderson in CF
Absolutley not. Jaque Jones is not an upgrade to anything we already have. Career OPSs: '00 - .781, 89 OPS+ '01 - .751, 96 OPS+ '02 - .852, 125 OPS+ '03 - .797, 106 OPS+ '04 - .742, 90 OPS+ '05 - .757, 99 OPS+ Career - .757, 101 OPS+ Talk about Lack-Luster

Cold, heartless thread on Aaron
QUOTE(WinninUgly @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 06:38 PM) If he shortens up his swing with 2 strikes he will raise his average and OBP by 20+ points. Did anyone see this coming? Everyone heard the NYY rumors and the Marlins rumors, but this one came out of nowhere. I wonder if this was expedited because of the Delgado deal? Either way, this was a good move for both teams. This had been reported for a while now, I don't see how you can say it came out of nowhere. I figured Rowand had the best chance of playing for the Marlins next year then the Phillies then the Yankees. This trade did not surprise me.

White Sox acquire Jim Thome per ESPNnews
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 06:41 PM) I just want to point out. The reports say the Phils are going to pick up 22 million of the contract, which means the Sox would be paying an avg of just over 7 mill (for 3 years). If you figure in the 3.25 Aaron was slated to make the deal ends up meaning the Sox would see there payroll increase 3.75-3.8 million over last years. This means if the Sox give Konerko 3 million more (he made good money this year IIRC, 10 mill or so) you'd have roughly a 7 million increase in those two players. Obviously other guys are due raises, but thats not even figuring in the loss of Everett and Thomas which would easily wash out Konerko's raise and Thome's net (minus Arows salary). Which means Garland and maybe a few others get raises (pushing you to 6-8 million). This means the Sox (after this trade) still have anywhere from 7-12 million (depending on what you think payroll will be 85 or 90) to make upgrades (thats if they don't deal Duque). $8.75

Cold, heartless thread on Aaron
If there's two things that Aaron did well at the dish it was hit with RISP and hit for a decent average. '05: RISP - 4 HR, 53 RBI .290/.366/.443/.809 RISP w/ 2out - 1 HR, 27 RBI .354/.417/.508/.924 Career BAs: '01 - .293 '02 - .258 '03 - .287 '04 - .310 '05 - .270 Career - .283 The problem was his very low OBP, inconsistency, excessive strikeouts and drop in power. Row was most definately expendable and I expected him to be traded but that statement just was not true.

Cold, heartless thread on Aaron
QUOTE(Princess Dye @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 06:09 PM) how replaceable is Aaron? once we're done being sad about this, the answer is very. a heartless thought this early, but i cant help it. Aaron's hitting is definitely lighter than what you'd expect from the starting CF on a world series team. and he's definitely not one of those guys who hits for low average yet still seems to always get the big hit. what makes him a starter is the glove, but honestly... you can get someone that good without too much trouble. Meanwhile, Thome is one of those players, when healthy, you have a lot of trouble replacing. Thome at his best is going to do a ton more for this lineup than Aaron has. and even with its world series rings, i didnt want that lineup going into another year where it would depend so much on that pitching staff. thanks to this, i think we have just found ourselves a lot more ways to win games. What do you mean by this?
