QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 11:28 PM) Make that month into a week (2 tops) and when I have stuff to do.... still drink. I will probably not live past 40 at the rate I've destroyed my body. You'd be surprised by how much abuse the human body can take.

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 08:43 AM) So my cousin out in California was telling me how she was out this past weekend and got pretty blasted, so at around 2 am or thereabouts they go to this place called Tacos al Carbon b/c that's what's open. She is the only non-Hispanic person in there, she speaks a little Spanish, but it's crappy. This guy (who is Mexican) comes up and tries to talk to her. She's still pretty drunk so she figures she's gonna mess with him some, so she starts to ask him "you got that paper?" meaning if you wanna talk to me you gotta have money. Except she verbalizes this thought in Spanish as "tienes papeles?" The guy's table starts laughing and she doesn't know why, so thinking she just successfully said something in Spanish she says it again a couple more times, and louder. But she doesn't realize what she's asking is "do you have papers?" which of course if you ask that to someone who's Mexican, it means something along the lines of "are you an illegal immigrant" or "do you belong in this country". Hilarious. She got lucky she found the kind of Mexicans who can laugh at that kind of stuff.

LA Times guide to Spring Training in Glendale
QUOTE (Wanne @ Feb 15, 2009 -> 06:17 PM) Thanks for posting Balta. Gotta say though...the restaurant selection they gave was sketchy (mostly who the hell wants to drive to Chandler to eat). I figure most people will be staying on the west side or northwest (Arrowhead area). Here's my suggestions for eats. Arrowhead area: Abuelo's- Mexican. (South of Bell off of 83rd Ave. By the Harkins theater). OUTSTANDING! Definately in my top 3 favorites to eat at! Cucina Tagliani- Italian. (Right on Bell and 83rd Ave area) VERY good. Ah So- Sushi/Japanese. 2 locations. 1 at 75th Ave and Paradise Lane (just below Bell). The second is at 61st Ave and Bell. Smaller place but MUCH better food IMO. Skye Restaurant A little upscale. Fine dining with entertainment. Excellent food!!! A little on the pricey side though. VERY NICE place. Check it out online: skye-restaurant.com/ Downtown Glendale (55th Ave & Glendale Ave) Downtown Glendale is kind of a historic/quaint area. But these to places ARE THE BOMB. La Piazza al Forno. Some of THE BEST food I've ever had. Great Pizza. Great Italian entrees. Haus Murphy- German food. Great food and beer selection! A few of my other favorites: Pappadeaux- Cajun/Seafood. (North of Peoria Ave on the I-17 access road) One of my favs. I highly recommend crab fingers with dirty rice. Gotta have a Swamp Thing to drink too! Texaz Grill- 16th St & Bethany Home (Phoenix). Kind of a hole in the wall steakhouse. GREAT steaks and THE BEST Chick Fried Steak you'll ever eat! Also here's a list of places to go at Westgate (area right next to the football and hockey stadiums): http://www.goglendaleaz.com/food/westgate_restaurants.html Out of these places I prefer Yard House and Gordon Biersch and their ridiculous slew of beer choices. Hope this helps a little for the people new to the area. thx for the info. Can you recommend any live music venues?

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 14, 2009 -> 12:50 PM) I watched Do The Right Thing for the first time yesterday. After watching it, I honestly can't see Spike Lee's anger at not being nominated for Best Picture. Also, Danny Aiello was great it in. John Turturro was solid as well.

In case you don't know, Phoenix does a LOT of drugs. He also claims that film with Paltro will be his last ever.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) It's clearly A LOT of people's opinions too - and again, I meant no offense. It's not always easy to judge something like acting unless you have experience with it. And a lot of people would disagree, people who have a lot of 'experience' with acting. Look Rourke will probably win the Oscar. All I'm saying is it might be the best performnace this year, I'll buy an argument for that, but to say it's great, I don't know. I was not moved, didn't care too much for his character and he didn't do much to make me care. I'm not offended by the way. I just don't like when people say that because someone is not some kind of 'expert' at something, they can't have an opinion. Kind of like when athletes say "Well he's never played the game so......" But I digress.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 08:13 AM) I think it is one of Rourke's best in many many years, but not one of THE best in many many years Of course it is, but it's not like the guy has been extremly active lately.

Picture of Michael Phelps smoking bong surfaces
QUOTE (daa84 @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) this isn't necessarily true...i doubt the bong is actually his...the most casual pot smokers dont buy pot and just smoke with their friends on occasion out of whatever their friends are smoking from...for instance he could have been at a party...some of his friends say, hey do you want to hit this? whats he supposed to do, say oh no im a lightweight, can you put it in a one hitter for me What you describe is possibly and we'll never know for sure. I guess it comes down to what you want to believe about the guy when you see that photo. I certainly don't look at it and think, gee maybe the bong belonged to is grandmother who smokes it for her glaucoma, or maybe it was only his third time smoking. Call me crazy, but I see a guy with his face in a bong and I think he's a f***ing stoner.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 06:14 PM) I mean no offense by this -- but maybe you don't know much about acting. Rourke's performance is nothing short of breathtaking in my opinion. One of the best in MANY MANY years. Oh c'mon, you didn't really go down that road, did you? It's your OPINION that Rourke's performance is one of the best in years and since I don't agree, then maybe I don't kow much about acting.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) Frost/Nixon should win best picture, but it sure won't. Haven't seen that yet, it's next on my list, you say it should win, but is it a great film??

Music Thread
Saw this in an article about companies that might fold in '09. Sirius Satellite Radio. (SIRI - parent company; about 1,000 employees; stock down 96%). The music rocks, but satellite radio has yet to be profitable, and huge contracts for performers like Howard Stern are looking unsustainable. Sirius is one of two satellite-radio services owned by parent company Sirius XM, which was formed when Sirius and XM merged last year. So far, the merger hasn't generated the savings needed to make the company profitable, and Moody's thinks there's a "high likelihood" that Sirius will fail to repay or refinance its debt in 2009. One outcome could be a takeover, at distressed prices, by other firms active in the satellite business.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 11:07 PM) I think overall, he's absolutely accurate. IMO it starts with joints, then pipes/pieces, then bongs, then the hardcore s*** like vaporizers. Exactly, just like you don't drink a bottle of Tequila the first time you try alcohol and you don't shoot a speed ball into your neck the first time you try drugs. Phelps is a stoner and probably has been for a while.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 10:26 PM) you say this for everything. Is it not possible to be the best without being great? 'The Reader' should win best picture, but it's not great. Penn or Rourke will win best actor, but neither performance is great......hell, Ledger was better in his role than both.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 10:33 PM) Seriously. You've made a dozen posts debating whether or not to see The Wrestler and you how expect not to be impressed by it Huh? I decided to try see every film that is up for best picture, or other awards. As far as The Wrestler goes, Rourke has a couple of really touching scenes with his daughter, besides that his performance is nothing out of this world. He might end up winning best actor, because honestly it might be the best performance of the year. As far as all this 'comeback' talk, I'll wait to see what his next two or three projects are like before I call it a comeback.

Picture of Michael Phelps smoking bong surfaces
QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 02:01 AM) Ive done it maybe 4 times in my life, and twice it was bong hits. So dont know where you make that sound like such a fact. Really? That's kinda funny. My experience is that most people start off slowly with one hitters or slight drags from joints and gradually move up to pipes and bongs and blunts and other gadgets.

I'm the biggest Sean Penn fan you're ever gonna find, but I was not blown away by his performance in Milk. Then again, I'm measuring it on the Penn scale, he's been much better in other films. By the way, did anyone happen to catch Rourke on Larry King last night? For whatever reason they brought some wrestler, doofus, Jericho(?) dude on the program. This guy challenged Rourke to a match and said he felt very offended by some things Rourke said about him. Seemed like it was all an act? Rourke kept his cool and took the high road, but that a hole wouldn't drop it. Weird.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 01:41 PM) That's usually how Sprint does it. I remember when I used to work at Radio Shack (which carried Sprint & AT&T) whenever a customer would come in wanting to cancel/switch service, Sprint would fold faster than Superman on laundry day. AT&T on the other hand... Well, then I'm gonna bend them over again in a few months.
