Most Surprising White Sox performance in 17?
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm Happy with Avi since I was one of the few to see hope for him and Leury is my AAP so it's all good. -
Avi 27/59 against left handers . Leading the league with a mind boggling .458 average. Also .661 slg. and 1.136 OPS . Also batting .306 against righties.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 10:55 PM) And it sucks Doesn't suck at all . Despite all the K's Davidson is hitting better than Frazier. Not sold on him as a better fielder though. Avi with another 2 RBI and Holland stopping his bad starts streak so helped the trade value.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 06:28 PM) Avi just continues to pour it on! 2-1 Sox He hasn't started regressing yet . He's been fairly consistent. Every time his BA gets around .325 he bumps it right back up into the .330's and another hit today might make it to .340 . -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 06:43 PM) Booker a 4 hit game with a homer I really like that kid.

Nationals acquire Doolittle/Madson from As

Lost another one. Matt Albers gives up a HR to ... wait for it...Tyler Flowers. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 12:53 PM) Hanson isn't on the lineup card. They may get a day or two buffer zone with the active roster. Could this have anything to do with Moncada possibly going back on the DL ?

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 05:34 AM) The stat geeks have ruined this site for me. Why not just sit back, relax, and enjoy the fact that he's having a tremendous season. Instead there's adjusted contact rate stats, ground ball average and peripherals. Why even play the games? Just use fangraphs, war, and any other made up stat to determine the winner through a computer. It seems like every thread deteriorates into a discussion about WAR, peripherals, fip, xfip, or some other random stat. I understand what you mean because I am as old school as it gets. It's all just part of the fun discussions about predictability. Weather you use advanced stats or not the consensus on Avi was he sucked at pretty much everything. Now an old school guy like me who has observed baseball for years could see Avi had some real tools that he just wasn't bringing to the surface and had plenty of chances without showing much improvement using the eye test or advanced stats. I will admit that half of me is always optimistic a young player will turn it around while others given the large sample size of badness declared Avi a bust . At every turn I'd argue against these conclusions but I easily could've been wrong . The advanced stats just give the arguments merit for those who believe in them and statistically and mathematically many of those stats are valid. Despite all that sometimes things just click. A change in stance along with weight loss , a newer mental approach those are things the stats cannot take into consideration . All they do is show tendencies and if the peripherals stay the same the player is a failure . The trouble is there are now so many peripherals and ways to look at a player that many times a stat geek can overlook things or become focused on just a handful of stats to make their assessment. Last year I saw signs Avi was improving in fielding and that he was just about the Sox best hitter with RISP . Also when he made contact he hit the ball really hard and hit some monster HR's. I also suggested he lose weight near the end of last year because he looked stiff through his upper body and thought he had lost a step. It's important to observe the game closely to make keen observations if I am going to argue with these mathematicians. Luckily I love White Sox baseball so much I can always hope for the best and also, with somewhat rose colored, glasses make my own observations. The stats guy just make it very challenging to discuss baseball , but I'm here to discuss baseball so in the end it makes discussions better even if the stats guys are just a little too trusting of every new stat that comes along. Remember us old guys used stats too but they were batting average, RBI's, ERA and whatever was on the back of a baseball card. Fangraphs is just a huge baseball card for the new generation.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 7, 2017 -> 06:21 AM) http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2017-top-al...act-performers/ I wish I knew what you are saying. Just posting Fangraphs stuff tells me nothing about how you feel. Take for example the exceedingly good luck on ground balls. The last few games where where he got his BA back into the .330's. He hit some lasers on the ground. So hard they whizzed by the fielders. Also his hustle and speed has earned him more than his fair share of infield hits. Is that lucky? Perhaps somewhat catching fielders unaware to just how fast he is getting down the line. Maybe they will be more awake for Avi's hustle next time. Avi got a double on a grounder that went to the 3rd baseman's left. That's right, in the hole between 3rd and short . It was hit so fast the left fielder ran it down near the warning track and Avi easily made it to 2nd . Fangraphs is fine for telling you things about stats but they don't look at every individual AB like I do. There has to be a balance between what the stats say and what you actually see the player do.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 5, 2017 -> 10:23 PM) That's being generous, you could've said below .170 and you still would've been right! So you're saying Schwarber could be Pedro Alvarez.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 6, 2017 -> 09:18 PM) It's really strange, it takes a little left hand turn as it's coming down. You would think a major league park would have more than one angle to see it They say it hit a catwalk. -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 6, 2017 -> 10:38 PM) That Avi HR was a bomb .Had to be at least 450 and Frazier's slightly less . Eh Statcast says 434 but it hit the black tarp over the deepest seats in lower deck before bouncing back toward the field. Ok it hit the facing of the 2nd deck even more impressive. -

Hawk to retire at the end of 2018 season
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to justBLAZE's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (JoeCredeYes @ May 31, 2017 -> 07:02 PM) I'll miss Hawk. We all know it's time, but I chose to remember the good days. Fond memories of yesteryear, asking my Dad what the heck a cat-bird seat was, what the heck a can-of-corn had to do with a baseball game. I'll miss his candor. The number of guys that can actually get away with saying what they feel in our social justice warrior era can be counted on a couple hands at best. I'll miss his enthusiasm. Hawk has been the voice of my baseball team for as far back as my memory goes, and I think growing up listening to a guy live and die on every pitch in a game where essentially nothing ever happens, made me feel like it was important, like that's how I should feel about baseball, and it worked. He put everything he had in to this gig for a long time, and as corny as it sounds you can't argue with the passion he brought to the mic day in and day out. I'm glad I got to grow up listening to his stories of legends I couldn't pull up youtube videos of at my fingertips. I feel bad for the kids today that will never get to experience that. Sure, the Grandpa campfire story magical feeling waned as I grew older, but I'd still take a tall tale from the Hawk I've heard 100 times over Benetti telling me what his Mom put in his lunchbox. Love em, hate em, somewhere in between, hats off to a legend, the end of an era, this Sox fan will always cherish the memories. Thanks Hawk You might not post very much in all your years as a member of this community but damn this post rocks ! -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 30, 2017 -> 08:18 AM) The dude has 475 plate appearances at the MLB level. Garcia almost has 4 times that amount of experience. If it took Garcia that long to "figure" things out, why wouldn't you believe in Schwarber? I would give Schwarber that long . However Avi appears to get it now whereas you take the chance Schwarber might not ever get it. Right now you'd be trading a productive for a non productive player without a position .Why would you want a DH in waiting ? There are way too many guys hitting below.230 who can't field and all they can do is hit the ball far.

That half inning took 30 minutes.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 4, 2017 -> 09:35 AM) Always appreciated his honesty and the man absolutely knew the game. For any interested here is the link to the interview that I had with him. Like in real life, he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and had some wonderful stories: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/in...=11&id=2852 Good article for anyone who likes Sox history . Much controversial content. Piersall sure didn't pull any punches.

Would guess not too many on this board remember Piersall the player nor do I . I do remember him with Harry Caray. They ragged on the Sox pretty badly. Piersall was a little crazy ( different for sure). 1955 Piersalls memoir .Fear Strikes Out, hit the bookshelves. 1957 came the movie starring Psycho star Anthony Perkins. Piersall may be best known for running around the bases backwards after hitting his 100th HR of his career. RIP Jimmy and condolences to his family and friends. He was 87.
