  1. QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 21, 2013 -> 07:07 PM) I may be wrong but I don't think you can do that. You can . It's done all the time.
  2. QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 21, 2013 -> 06:59 PM) Tuiassasopo(or whatever) was on deck when they made the move I believe. Once Dirks was announced as the PH for Tui then you change pitchers. Pretty simple.
  3. Ventura is an idiot . 4 straight hits and Dirks PHing and you don't bring in Veal ??
  4. I'm actually kind of bummed that Kepp still plays as much as he does . I recently read where Conor said he's starting to "get it" against major league pitching and if I'm not mistaken he's beed showing it. But he's getting less playing time now that Semien is playing some 3rd base. I think Beckham need to sit a little more and start resting up that hand for next year if he is still here.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2013 -> 10:33 AM) The other thing is most of the biggest bidders already have 1B. I expect Texas to be a major bidder , probably Boston and the Mets also . Sox should be in the running to round out the top 4.
  6. QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Sep 17, 2013 -> 12:04 PM) Just to temper the mood on Abreu Jerry Crasnick (ESPN) has a nice article up detailing his shortcomings and basically giving us a buyer beware summary. The talent evaluators mostly agree that Abreu has legit power if he can harness it but will be challenged by fastballs in tight and breaking balls at te MLB level. The article says he has no value as a base clogger and may be a bit heavy but at thend it is pointed out he has trimmed down a bit. They try to guess his contract value and mention something like a 4 year 40 million contract. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/page/onenat...se-dariel-abreu It doesn't mention the Sox as a potential team to match him up with but maybe that is a good thing. Unless they changed the article ,it does mention the White Sox have payroll flexibility after the Peavy and Rios trades. When you see these scouting reposrts it makes me wonder if they purposely point out his flaws since they work for teams that might have an interest in Abreu in order to try to keep the bidding down. I expect him to get more than Cespedes or Puig because there is a lack of quality 1st basemen in the minors and also in the Majors. I would be surprised if the bidding doesn't reach $9-10M a year, 4-6 years.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 11:25 PM) 40% is not recouping a LOT of their money...not even a majority of their money. Where did you ome up with the 40% figure ? Link please ? And even if it was 40% , the contract was 5 yrs. $65M he played 2 years at 13M per season so they paid $26 for his services. That leaves 3 yrs at $39 M remaining so it's safe to say insurance paid at least most of that $39 million which I would call a lot and upwards of 50% of the orignal contract.
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 11, 2013 -> 07:31 PM) Semien showing the difference in control between MLB and minor league pitchers He's far from ready. All that good batting eye stuff went right out the window when facing ML pitchers with ungodly breaking pitches.
  9. it's really shocking how poor these young Sox hitters are . I havent seen so many swings and misses on down and away breaking pitches that miss the strike zone by a foot.
  10. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 08:48 PM) I just meant in general. Not Sox only I know what you meant it just didnt answer my original question which my own subsequent answer did.
  11. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 08:41 PM) While the latter is hard to prove, it is known that Belle was a dick. What caulfield had meant when he was saying "haven't we learned from Belle" was because I believe we signed him to a 5 year contract but he had opted out after 2 years. The years after those two with us he went to Baltimore and his hip fell apart and he sucked. He didnt exactly suck he just wasnt the same player . Either one of his 2 years in Baltimore would make him easily the Sox best hitter though he could barely run anymore by the end of the 2nd season . And what's there to learn ? That was a great contract because we got out of it. Also Baltimore recooped a lot of their money from insurance. Plenty of players have been dicks and still played great baseball and won World Series. Chemistry is only made as a point on losing teams to detract from how crappy most of your players are.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 06:59 PM) But, with Belle... 1) That team wasn't competitive 2) A lot of that damage was done in the 2nd half when the season was over...garbage time 3) He wasn't popular at all with fans and maybe drove some away 4) Looking at statistics alone doesn't measure the negative impact on the clubhouse chemistry-wise 5) In the end, we were quite lucky he had an out with that contract or look at the situation Baltimore ended up in with him You'll have to show me some proof that in a season of 49 Hr's 48 doubles, 152 RBI and a 1.054 OPS that " a lot " (w/e that means )was done in garbage time. Also please prove a guy who had such a monster season was unpopular with fans or that he was a negative clubhouse influence. I can say he was well liked by his team mates and the fans liked him without any proof. Also the 2 years he had with Baltimore before he retired would make him the best hitter on this year's Sox. Even in his last year he still had 37 doubles 23 HR's 103 RBI . His 1st year with Baltimore was better than his 1st year with the Sox. No one has ever had 50 50 in HR's and double except Belle and he was 2 doubles and 1 HR short of doing it with the Sox. Baltimore signed him to a 5 year contract keeping him as one of the top 3 paid players in baseball but even after he retired because of a degerative hips after 2 years Baltimore kept him on the 40 man roster and recooped most of their investment in him from insurance.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 07:38 PM) My quick thoughts on Johnson: - I don't like his wind-up, as I worry about him being able to repeat his delivery - His fastball velocity was up today, which is great to see - Slider is far and away his best offspeed pitch - He needs to have better command of all of his pitches - His changeup is not MLB caliber He has a good curve. The Tiger's announcers at one point called it Verlanderesque but noted that he didn't seem to throw it much.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 07:32 PM) So are the Sox trying to make Leury Garcia a right-handed hitter only? Odd that Robin pinch hits for Conor unless he thinks he was sparing him from some boos , when Conor has 2 hits off Porcello tonight . Also ,as you noted ,Leury is a switch hitter but batting RH against the RH Porcello. If you're going to send a RH up why not Semien ? Ha so now Garcia is playing 3rd and Semien 2nd.
  15. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 07:14 PM) Actually I found it on ESPN's stats. The Sox no.3 hitters are 13th's in the ML for GDP's which is pretty good/bad considering we're 27nd in OBP or if you prefer our leadoff hitters are 12th's in OBP and our no. 2 hitters are last in MLB and our no.9 hitters are last in the AL in OBP by a wide margin .234 for 15th place to .250 for 14th . I didn't use MLB for no. 9 hitters since the of NL teams have pitchers bat 9th most of the time . So that means in the 3 batting order spots that proceed the # 3 hitter ( 9,1, 2 ) don't get on base very much but our # 3 hitters are still have hit into the 13th most DP's in the league. So when we do have men on with less than 2 outs our # 3 hitters have hit into a higher percentage of DP's. While doing this research I've found it also supported my idea that I don't like Robin's lineups. Our # 8 hitters are 1st in the AL in battng average (.291)and OBP (.339) while our #2 hitters are last in OBP (.280)
  16. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 06:45 PM) Three hitters, overall, hit into more DPs than any other spot. Part of Tango's research on batting order years ago. Actually I found it on ESPN's stats.
  17. Oh Conor why is it the better you hit the worse you field ?
  18. Is there a stat that shows DP's by position in the batting order ? I swear our 3 hitter's must lead the league.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 05:22 PM) Technically none of these runs should be earned. Error on the umpire .
  20. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) Wow. That was a strikeout. thanks ump f***ing asshole .just what a young starter needs.
  21. Sales arch nemesis Victor Martinez hits 1 out. 5-1 Sox.
