  1. And one step towards shoring up this staff is signing a front liner starter. Which Jon's dropped salary or trade value could help with. He would be a decent 5th starter, but in all honesty, so could Cotts, or Grilli, or Diaz. They might not be proven as of yet, but this is a chance you have to take when trying to sign free agents and getting the most value out of your team. When you dont have alot of money to go around, having a 5th starter that may make more money than most of your infielders, that is not good money management.
  2. Wow, you dont get it. If we could, that would be an ideal situation, if Jon would be the 5th starter. Unfortunatley we have to come to terms that if we want to fill our gaps with a top of the line starter and some good infielders, which we are going to need dearly. Then we dont have the cash to pay that much to someone who is going to be a 5th starter, especially when his record isnt that great anyway. If we want our 1-5 starters to be the best since the early 90's then we are going to have to cut some cost where we can, and that is going to be trimming the salary of our 5th starter. As much as it would look great with Jon in that spot considering his experience and his potential, his salary makes that a big stretch. And we dont have to bring a kid up from the minors, this is why they did that this season by bringing up Diaz, Grilli, and pitching Neal a ton. Because eventually they could have the experience to make a run at a lower cost 5th starter Does that make more sense
  3. Does it really matter what holes they had in 2001?? or what we have next year???
  4. After this season??? SS, RF, 2B, 3B Everyday players play everyday
  5. Once again, see what this 5th starter "confidence" has done for our 5th starters in the past. Talent means nothing if you cant produce. -Joe Borchard
  6. All im saying is anyone making the same money he makes would be fine with me. if we are paying that much for a 5th starter with "potential" then we can free up money for the other gaping holes in the lineup
  7. Minor league career=terrible argument. See: Joe Crede MVP thanks And we wont be in the playoffs if we pay our 5th starter 3 million like querty says is the definite salary. Cause we wont have any money for any other position
  8. Ah yes, the magical powers of a 5th starter. We all know that no matter what, our 5th starters feel no pressure and only perform to their ability when put in this slot in the rotation. Why didnt we think of this before?????
  9. And if he wins 16 games, than he will lose 19 or 20. Not a very sound investment for a 5th starter if you ask me.
  10. This is based on your theory that his 12 major league games is a good measuring stick of what a starter can do throughout his career. I guess that would make sense.....wait no it doesnt. BTW wasting 4 million dollars on a fifth starter is ridiculous. If you dont like Grilli, than maybe the SOX gm can put someone else in there that YOU would feel comfortable with. This is a numbers game, and regardless of our high hopes, we dont have much money. If we are going to lose more that half the games that Garland pitches, why not lose the same amount of games for 3 million less in payroll.
  11. This isnt brain surgery, add that 3 million to your offer for a good top of the rotation guy, move grilli to the 5th spot, and you will have Mark, Jose, Freddie, FA, and Grilli. Never did I say buy a starter for 3 million, I am saying that moving Jon to the 5th spot and paying him that much money is a waste. this would look better than maybe missing out on a good deal because we want to keep sub .500 garland.
  12. and im saying, why have a 5th starter cost that much, unload garland and you just freed up 3 more million to sign a good fa OUT
  13. Perez, Radke, Clement ( i hope not) are not fifth starters, so not sure what that post is supposed to mean
  14. HAHAHAHAHAHA, after only 12 games at the major league level are you saying that he is done proving what he can do?????? Then that means Kelly Dransfeldt would be an MVP with the few games he has played with us this year. As for what players do in the minors, come on, all I have to say is Joe Crede Grilli has pitched a total of 66.2 innings, who is to say he wont improve, give him some time, at least it wont cost us much. Garland may only be 24, but he has started 125 games already in his career. Who is to say we havent seen what he can do already. When you are comparing what two pitchers have achieved in their major league careers, and especially with potential, 12 games to 125 doesnt seem very fair does it OUT
  15. Both have potential, and Grilli has less major league experience, so I think he had the most room to improve. And what would you rather pay for potential, 4 million, or under 1 mill......not exactly a tough decision OUT
  16. we arent going to sign a 5th starter thats for sure. If you are going to sign an FA for a couple of mil, he isnt going to be the bottom of the rotation OUT
  17. not great either, only one winning season, no thanks
  18. Fine with me, Kip wells is 5-7 and had already given up 14 homeruns by the time he was injured. This is basically along the exact same line as Garland with the same era, and BAA. They both suck ass OUT
  19. If our 5th starter is getting paid 4-5 million dollars to go .500 then we are retarded. We arent the yankees and dont have the payroll for that, on this team, the 5th starter is going to have to cost under a million, thats the bottom line OUT
  20. I'd buy him before Garland because its a better deal. Garland is a career loser, evern on decent teams, he is consistantly the worst pitcher. He just cant win. Im sick of sitting through his constant 5 runs innings. I would rather have a pitcher who has some good stuff, and tries to win, and at least has some brain cells in his head. If you are going to have a losing pitcher in your rotation no matter what, why pay 2.3 million for him, when you could do it for the league min. Garland-he gone! OUT Garland Career - 44 and 51 I hate you
  21. did you have a problem with Olivo starting?? with his carerr 234 avg, and thats not just because of his early years, this year he is 232. And I never heard anyone complaining about that. So if Burke is a 250 hitter or better, wouldnt you say thats an improvement as far as who is behind the plate???
  22. Clement has been a joke, had a good start, but once again has proven that he is not a winner. Season after season he has a terrible record, even on a winning team. Dont listen to baseball tonite too much.. he is terrible
  23. fine with me, at least we didnt sound like cubs fans whining about wait till next year OUT
