QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2012 -> 10:28 AM) I think this is a good letter-to-the-editor illustrating the differences in mindset between the US and other cultures: http://www.calgaryherald.com/opinion/lette...0028/story.html http://www.calgaryherald.com/opinion/colum...4368/story.html The best line from the columnist:

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 10, 2012 -> 08:33 AM) Keep this in mind... http://deadspin.com/5933467/i-would-like-t...est-letter-ever Way better than that Wall street cover letter from a year ago.

Anyone listen to Frank Turner? "I Still Believe" has been in my head for days.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2012 -> 05:06 PM) Reasons to bump a thread. #1: the FBI recordings of the guy caught him saying this: Oh wow. That is awesome.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 04:38 PM) Only 1 man I can imagine luring a young boy away from Tom Crean's love, and that man is Calipari.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 04:20 PM) Trey Lyles, an IU recruit from the 2014 class, just reopened his recruitment. Says IU still 1st on his list. Interesting. I'm always leery when kids who haven't even played a game in high school commit (even if it has been two years now), but still... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. This kid has looked nothing but studly.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 09:25 PM) IT was originally SLAP. When the political talk moved, the acronym changed. Jason, Balta answered this four hours earlier. That's an hour longer than the three hour time difference, no excuse!

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 11:49 AM) I prefer it so I dont think its the worst, WGN is much worse IMO. I prefer local news in the morning and dont care to hear in depth about Syria which im eating breakfast. ABC is the best, IMO. I'd probably rate Fox the worst, but I really don't have much of an order for the four after ABC.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 06:06 PM) So does this mean that when Romney wins the White House that the Republicans can sic the IRS on George Soros and every other large Obama donor? I mean if Obama can do it...... http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/na...0,2898540.story I'm more impressed by the guy that lost 125 million gambling. Nice!

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 09:16 PM) Because hate is a motive, and motive can be a factor in how harsh the penalties are. Are you arguing that it shouldnt be more of a penalty, or that its duplicative as a law and therefore unnecessary? Bad thought is already punished. Murder 1 v Murder 2. Intentional arson versus non-intentional. If I purposefully burnt down a school, shouldnt I be punished more than if I accidentally burnt down a school? I really dont know where you are going with this. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 09:29 PM) You are charged with murder one or murder 2. Not murder, and a hate crime. The addition of hate crime does nothing to make the situation any better for anyone. Alpha, you missed Badger's point. You're treating a hate crime as if the fact one person hates another is the crime itself, which is not the case. A hate crime is a "normal" crime (assault, vandalism, murder, etc.) that was motivated by that hate. What badger was trying to say is that bringing in that motivation is not at all new or exclusive to hate crimes -- plenty, even most, crimes factor in motivation. That's what he was saying about Murder-1 and Murder-2. Yes, you can be charged with either of them, but the difference in what the charge will be often depends on the suspect's motivation. Murder-1 often means it was premeditated, essentially that the suspect planned the crime and carried it out. Murder-2 usually means it was an intentional killing, basically that there wasn't much planning but the suspect still intended to kill the victim (as in, Murder-1 would be "John brings a knife from his house, drive to his ex's house, and stabs and kills her" while Murder-2 would be "John is having a fight with his ex at her house, sees a knife, picks it up, and stabs and kills her.") To decide between Murder-1 and Murder-2, the prosecutor would look at the intent and motivation behind the killing -- the same way they could look to see if it was motivated by a hate for that group (be it race, religion, sexual orientation, whatever).

I think tonight was my favorite episode of the Newsroom so far.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 10:27 PM) It's actually for my business fraternity, so it's a volunteer position on top of my normal career. I'm now in charge of 9 chapters throughout the midwest, very excited for the opportunity! Right. You definitely mentioned this before. Oops!

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 02:31 PM) If I go out and start buying up fertilizer, it won't be long before the FBI is at my doorstep. If I buy a 6 month supply of Claritin D, the police will pay me a visit. In both of those cases, they'd probably do a medical records check. If I go out and buy 6000 rounds of ammunition, large volume magazines, semi-automatic military-style assault weapons, handguns, and full body armor, no one will know anything about it or ask any questions until I use it. Hell, I could pay cash at a gun show and make sure there's no paper trail. No one will stop and ask if I'm in the care of a mental institution or capable of making decisions about using that equipment. You can't tell me that we can't do better than this. We can do better. However, you're equating trends that (possibly) indicates dangerous/criminal behavior with a legitimate, one-time purchase of a handgun. But, more to the point, I was commenting on how broad "psychological" is and that it can mean pretty much anything, whether or not it has anything related to do with "dangerous" behavior.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 01:41 AM) Got the central regional director position! Congrats! Is this one still based in LF?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 10:19 PM) Then of course there's the other issue one could raise...if a person is seeking psychological treatment, should they be able to buy multiple weapons? Clearly my answer is...that's the kind of thing you should have a background check for. I think I understand the sentiment you're going for here, but this would open way too big a can of worms/be damn near impossible to implement.

QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 03:49 PM) I had Kromarczuk's at two seperate games within three days and did not think they were any better than what is currently served at the Cell. Blasphemous! I went to Sox-Twins game this past Wednesday and sat way up in the left-field home run porch area (it was a free ticket, no complaining from me). Despite being high up it was still a great view and I didn't feel that far away at all.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 12:35 PM) Seriously...$63.99 for full access to all games for out of towners. *scratches head* I get what you're saying, and even bought MLB.tv when it was on sale over Father's Day weekend, but I also like to know when they're on TV here. Not only is it easier to flip to other stuff during commercials, but way more importantly, the MLB.tv feed is about five minutes slow, at least for me. Also, while it's in HD, it's slightly less quality than TV.

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 04:35 PM) Definitely weird. I like the follow up jab at Purdue fans. Those whispers of the rumors about Painter have spread across the state very quickly. What rumor is this?

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 03:54 PM) It sounds like Tom wants to make sweet sandusky love to one of his recruits. Yeah it's definitely creepy sounding.

Crean tweets way too much to make a mistake like this.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 06:57 AM) If you live outside the Sox' MLB-defined "local territory", games on CSN will be blacked out even if you have the channel. There are a handful of places, Indianapolis being the most prominent, that are inside that "local territory" but don't carry CSN on their regular package, so it's actually worth paying extra to pick up CSN. Found this out the hard way! I mean, we wanted that package anyway for the movie channels, but it was still depressing.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 05:12 PM) Guys, just my humble opinion, but life is too short to be so worried about where you get your chicken sandwich from... And the award for best post in the thread goes to...iamshack. For the record, I'm referring to what seems like a majority of people in this debate (not in this thread, just in general) who show ginned up outrage on either side, not the ones legitimately passionate.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 10:09 AM) As for Pearl on ESPN, he's absolutely going to kill it. He'll be great for them. Definitely has the personality for it, but his voice might bother me. It'll probably be better now that he's not coaching, though.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) Same. Im a pretty loyal buyer too, so once I like something I stick with it. You have to be like Wiener Circle to lose my business. (I used to go there all the time, but the last time I went they refused to give me change and called it their tip.) Please say there's more to the story than that.
