  1. QUOTE (Felix @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 08:04 PM) I still maintain that "pop punk" is the stupidest name of a genre possible. Add in the fact that the music sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me, and yeah, I don't have any respect at all for Fallout Boy or any similar band. I can certainly understand not liking the music; there's music you've said you like that I can't get into (most of Ween, for example). But why is the name bad?
  2. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 06:23 PM) Hilarious. Saddam was tried, convicted and lawfully hanged and the left cried foul. But Qaddafi was dragged out and summarily executed by a bloodthirsty mob, and the left is claiming victory for Obama's policies. The left and the Democrats are totally OK with war and killing as long as it scores points for their "heroes". Uhh...The Critic was referring to the fact that Buehrle>Wood (Hence "B>W") included Gaddhafi in his possible "death pool" (a pool of people who you think might die in the next year). Nothing political about it. I'm guessing you thought it meant Barack>W. Bush? Not at all.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) "but I thought they were a lot better than most pop/punk/emo (or some combination like that) bands out there" if you hate the entire genre, you aren't likely to give credit to its best. I figured this would be the most common rebuttal, and I can definitely respect that one. For me, like I said, I'm a sucker for anything with a decent melody and lyrics that are fun to sing along to, and a lot of Pop Punk bands have that. I won't necessarily think it's good, but I'll enjoy listening to it. It's the equivalent of watching a crappy comedy movie. You might know it's bad, but still laugh a fair amount.
  4. An episode of the "The Wikipedia Files" on WBEZ with Patrick Stump. I was a sophomore high school when they first started to get big, so I was almost in their target audience (would've been exactly in it if I were a girl). Also, two of them went to my high school, so I have some sort of weird sentimentality thing with them. Fall Out Boy always struck as me that band people loved to bash but didn't know why. Maybe that sounds defensive, but I thought they were a lot better than most pop/punk/emo (or some combination like that) bands out there. I'm also a sucker for a good melody with decent lyrics...and that's pretty much what they were. They weren't my favorite band, and I'm not even I'd call them good music, but I enjoy(ed) listening to them. Also, Stump strikes me as a rather likeable dude. Very North Shore, though.
  5. QUOTE (The Critic @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) one check mark for B>W. Yeah, definitely didn't think it'd be that quick.
  6. I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Letters of Note (it's possibly my favorite Google Reader subscription), but here's a really good one. It's a fax cover sheet sent by David Foster Wallace to Harper's Magazine with instructions on how to edit (or not edit) it. This also reminds me I need to read Infinite Jest.
  7. Wayman Tisdale Award (Best Freshman) Watch List Bradley Beal, Florida (G, 6-3, 207, Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) Chane Behanan, Louisville (F, 6-6, 245, Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) Khem Birch, Pittsburgh (F, 6-9, 220, Fr., Montreal, Quebec) Anthony Davis, Kentucky (F, 6-10, 220, Fr., Chicago, Ill.) Andre Drummond, Connecticut (C, 6-10, 270, Fr., Middletown, Conn.) Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kentucky (F, 6-7, 232, Fr., Somerdale, N.J.) Le’Bryan Nash, Oklahoma State (G/F, 6-7, 230, Fr., Dallas, Texas) Austin Rivers, Duke (G, 6-4, 200, Fr., Winter Park, Fla.) Marquis Teague, Kentucky (G, 6-2, 189, Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.) Adonis Thomas, Memphis (F/G, 6-6, 222, Fr., Memphis, Tenn.) Josiah Turner, Arizona (G, 6-3, 192, Fr., Sacramento, Calif.) Cody Zeller, Indiana (F, 6-11, 230, Fr., Washington, Ind.) I'd assume Zeller has a chance to be high up in the voting at the end of the year, simply because he's going to be the best player and focal point of his team. Admittedly, I don't know enough about the teams of the other players on this list to know if that's true for others as well. Also, the fact that he's the best player on the team could possibly hurt him, since teams will focus on him more. While Zeller is likely the best player on IU this year, Watford is probably the better scorer right now. Two more years experience, and he'll be able to take a more natural role (out on the wing, instead almost exclusively playing the 4/5) with Zeller here. Of course, I could care less what individual awards Zeller (or any other Hoosier) wins, as long as the team plays well and improves significantly over last year.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) I think most cops already have a pretty good idea when someone is high. Secondly, marijuana already has been vastly decriminalized. Not completely, but it's pretty simple to get your hands on if you are a smoker. Finally, you guys are concerned about additives from a regulated product? Seems to be there would be a lot more concern about additives from some jackass that sells it out of the back of his trunk than were it to be sold by a reputable company. Especially considering all the organically grown products on the market right now, I am sure there would be plenty very good products available, were it to become legalized and regulated. I think you're right in regards to your first point, but it's the kind of thing that, for court purposes, would likely need to be quantified. As to the second point, you're kind of right. In most places, it's not too much worse than being a minor caught with alcohol. But there's a big difference in "almost there" and "there." I agree with your assertion that, considering the plethora of organic stuff, it wouldn't be too much of a problem. But I also don't think it's at far fetched to think there would be a Marlboro of weed that would add all kinds of crazy stuff we wouldn't know about. As far as how that compares to now, I'd surmise that there's a very community regulated approach (even if you have no idea who the other members of that community are). That is, if a dude sells someone a bag that's laced with something, no one's going to buy from him. Even if it's a normally reputable guy who gets a bad batch (which is highly unlikely, but in in any case), it will be discovered pretty damn quick, I would guess.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) Yeah, Big Hurt Beer is at Binny's, $1.99 for a 24oz can @ 7%. Two will get you nice and drunk. Is it possible to get that stuff shipped? I don't know alcohol shipping laws.
  10. QUOTE (MEANS @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 03:50 PM) why do these animals have to be killed? Why can't they just tranquilize them? Was a reason given? One of the articles I read mentioned that they worried the animals would get shot with a tranquilizer, and then stumble off and disappear and they wouldn't be able to find them. Not entirely sure of the validity of that reasoning, but it's what they said.
  11. This isn't quite what I was looking for, because it repeatedly references studies that say driving high is better than driving drunk. That may be true, but I don't want it to sound like driving after (or while) smoking is a good idea -- IMO it's definitely not. Some people say they have no problem, they're fine, whatever...but I'm calling bulls***. It slows down reaction time too much for me to believe people who are stoned are just as good at driving as when they're stoned. Yes, that above page does say that it's never a good idea to drive while high, but I still don't like the way they presented their argument. I'll keep looking.
  12. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 02:43 PM) I've always understood that that is one of the huge obstacles preventing the legalization. The fact that there isn't really a good test that can be administered on the side of the road to check if somebody is driving under the influence like they can do with breathalyzers. I think you're right that this is one of the biggest barriers. However, I think there could be tests similar to field sobriety tests that aren't a breathalyzer (walk in a straight line or whatever, those sorts of things) that could be modified to fit the behavior of someone who just smoked. I want to say NORML has already come up with some possible guidelines on how this exact problem could be worked out, but I'm not sure. Lemme do some digging.
  13. Under the Bridge would be a good choice, I think. It's fairly obvious stuff, so it shouldn't be too hard to grasp, I'd think.

I've heard amazing things about San Francisco (and the surrounding areas, including Wine Country), save for two things: Cost of Living (it's the most expensive in the country, even more than NYC, isn't it?) and the rainy/crummy weather. Those two things might be enough to deter me from wanting to live there; however, I've never even visited.

Show about a record executive in the 70s that has Scorsese, Jagger, and Terrence Winter (Boardwalk Empire creator) behind it? Yes, please.
  16. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 10:12 PM) When you give the government ahold of something, they can do what they like with it. Leaving open the chance for companies to put "additives" in the marijuana. If you can decriminalize, you can have dispensaries distribute (also making it so that you'll need a license to obtain). Ah; I figured it was something along those lines. I definitely understand that viewpoint, and mostly agree with it -- as long as it also meant that testing positive for it wouldn't be a fireable/reprehensible offense. Basically, making it so that it was entirely legal, it just couldn't be sold in stores. But selling would be legal, possession, etc. Granted, if the government were to go that far, I doubt they'd miss out on all the tax dollars by not legalizing it. I really just don't get it. Alcohol is a more harmful drug than marijuana; if people bring up the "yeah but it's still smoke and that's bad for you" argument, the incredibly easy rebuttal of "Then let's make tobacco illegal" waits to meet them. I think my underlying anger with this is that I can't stand it when people in general accept that things are legal or illegal, without attempting to understand the reason why that's so (and if they can't reason why, questioning why it's so). It's excruciatingly frustrating.
  17. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 06:42 PM) I would never be for legalizing it, I would decriminalize though. Out of curiosity, if you would decriminalize, why not legalize?
  18. This article is five months old, and although the slant is further right than mine, I thought the stuff about the "presumption of constitutionality" was interesting.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 08:21 AM) If you aren't going to be hired by the unpaid one anyway, walk away. They haven't made any commitment to you, so you owe them nothing as far as I am concerned. If I read his post correctly, the internship that is currently unpaid is the one that wants to hire him. I'd see if there was a way they could just hire you now; in the very least, let you continue your current setup until the paid internship (WC) runs out, and start the pseudo-filltime paid gig with CT.
  20. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 09:41 PM) Because a letter just went out, that's how. Sweet tradition. Wisconsin is definitely not alone in having vulgar chants. I'm not condoning it, but it seems sort of odd to single them out.
  21. Interesting article on support for marijuana legalization.

Homeland really ratcheting it up. Boardwalk Empire was great last night. I'm really curious to see what they're going to do with the new Irish guy, I could see him becoming really important. Also, I've never really felt like Jimmy's heart was in on going against Nucky; with the Commodore's stroke, I could see him going back to Nucky's side. Also, what's up with Gillian and Jimmy? There's clearly supposed to be some sort of incestuous subtext going on.

QUOTE (onedude @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 11:35 AM) 2nd episode was better BTW. Yeah, second episode was really really good. Also, concerning Gretchen Mol: she's damn fine. Plenty of gorgeous women on that show. The s*** Nucky pulled in the restaurant? Fantastic. I was kinda pissed Margaret went back to being a jerk to the waitstaff, though (even if I get why it happened).
