  1. Maybe I missed something, or only saw it through my blue-tinted sunglasses, but did Obama ever personally take credit for killing Osama? Did he emphasize the role he played in authorizing the mission? Of course, and any politician, I don't care how far to either end of the spectrum, would do the same thing. But I never once read that he personally took more credit than was due. Now, if you're mad at others for giving Obama too much credit, then that's something else...but don't get mad at Obama for that, because that sounds like what you were doing.

  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 04:56 PM) You know, I listened in, I don't blame him much at all. He was a bit mean, but I'd call out the hosts there. Does anyone who isn't an IU fan agree with me? This is what I've been wondering since I heard this earlier today. Obviously as an IU fan I'm going to be biased, so I'm curious how others viewed it. I mean, the hosts were berating (and not in a "this team is bad and here's why" way but in a "they suck. seriously, we pounded them in college" way) his team while he waiting on the line for the interview. Frankly, I'm happy we have a guy that shows that sort of passion and belief in this team. Lynch was a class act, but a passionless and terrible coach.
  4. QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 10:07 PM) That's a respectable question. As you know, I'm a very opinionated person. I'm also not a big fan of Obama. And to to tell you the truth, not a lot of people in the military are. Maybe the POGs (people other than grunts) are slightly more liberal, but not the combat dudes. We are one of the greatest bastions of conservatism in America. However, any good Soldier knows he's the boss. And we will obey his orders or the military will eliminate us. So when I go there, politics must remain separate. Yeah, we tell our conservative jokes and make politically conservative small talk, but if an order is given to us and we say, "well, Obama's a jackass, so...NO", we won't be long for the military. In fact, there was recently a LTC who refused to deploy until Obama showed his birth certificate. He did several months in jail, and deservedly so. That is mutiny and has no place in the organization. And sure, you might ask why I stay. And that's because my belief in American greatness is stronger, far stronger, than my disagreements with Obama's philosophies. LTC = Lieutenant Colonel BTW, so that guy probably had at least 15 years put in, and those years were completely wasted by his inability to abide by the simply guidelines I laid forward in this post. A shame. This is sort of what I figured, but from what I gather from your posts, you don't respect Obama. Without respect, it's pretty damn hard to lead a military (or anything else). Is it the respect for the office, then? Because while I understand that distinction, I think often that the respect for an office should reflect at least somewhat on its holder.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 09:24 AM) It changes my opinion of them, but that is just me. I used to be the same way. I read that MLK Jr. had been a fairly frequent womanizer and lost a lot of respect for him. But then I realized that no one's perfect, and everyone's imperfections manifest them in different ways. I'm not a womanizer...but I also lack the skills that many great politicians have. But like you said, that's just me.
  6. Flysox (or whatever your name is today), I do have a legitimate question for you. Obama is your Commander-in-Chief, right? If he walked up to you right now in his official capacity and gave you an order, you'd have to follow it, correct? From what I understand, grousing about the incompetency of one's superiors is quite commonplace in the military, much like in any organization or company. But if I'm in another organization where I vehemently disagree with everything my superiors are saying -- not just thinking they're incompetent, but that they are actively making bad decisions and making it an organization I don't want to be a part of -- then I leave that organization. Plain and simple. Because of this, I'm having a very hard time reconciling how you can apparently loathe everything about the upper apparatus or your organization (military and government), yet still actively be a part of it. Perhaps you can elaborate on this for me?
  7. Boy Meets World will always have a special place in my heart. I love that show, and it reeks of nostalgia when I see it again. Shameless is quickly climbing my rankings...even after only 1 season, it might be my favorite show.
  8. I'm bookmarking this thread for a few years from now, when I (hopefully) actually have many to buy a variety of liquors. It's so hard to experiment when I can only buy one standard bottle (i.e. 1 fifth of Bacardi, 1 of Smirnoff, etc.).
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 07:13 PM) This is the original post. Very clearly it is being stated that the vast majority of people here are either lying or mentally ill. Perhaps in Balta's original post, which was not actually making an argument but merely repeating an argument that was put forth in a book, you could make that case. However, it was very clear after that that the tone of many of the (liberal) posters in the thread were saying it was possible that reports had been exaggerated in general, and were not labeling any specific soldiers as liars. CrimsonWeltall's sample dialogue was the perfect demonstration of this; but you reverted back to what people weren't even really talking about anymore.

  11. No wonder no one ever agrees on this board, people aren't even responding to what's being written. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 12:11 PM) Soldier #1: I was spit on when I returned from Vietnam. Liberal #1: No you weren't you imagined it or exaggerated it. Nope, looks to me like they are being called liars. You completely turned around what he was saying, and then responded to that. Honestly, I don't think he could have stated his position any clearer.
  12. QUOTE (The Sir @ Aug 6, 2011 -> 09:59 PM) It should be pretty obvious that we're not ever going to agree on abortion Quite possible. However, my point was that I don't appreciate being called "miserable leftist scum" simply because I support public funding for abortions. Granted, I realize that I hadn't entered the conversation before then (so it obviously was in no way a personal remark about me), and that this board often gets heated. But, the reason many of your posts somewhat anger me is because you often seem to paint with a very broad brush (something I'm guilty of when speaking about conservatives, I'm sure) when it comes to any position that is left-of-center. It's a lot harder to have a discussion if one party is only talking about what they think the other believes.
  13. QUOTE (The Sir @ Aug 6, 2011 -> 09:49 PM) This is a stupid point. You don't know my skills as a Soldier, you're only telling me I could be dismissed without any real effect because I'm just one of many, just a face in the crowd. So I would only presume that you would tell any serviceman that his service is not needed. So where is the line drawn? If every Soldier took your advice to heart and stopped going to work, the military would cease to exist. And then we'd be defenseless. And even if the military does need cuts, you going around and telling Soldiers that they are simply wastes of tax dollars exposes the sort of low caliber individual that you are. Assuming they conduct themselves honorably, their service is something that deserves respect and gratitude, not doubt from cowardly punks who know nothing of the the troubles that they face. Wow. Your organization must be real vital to society if it hinges on one dude. Something tells me the collapse of this Fortune 8,786,369,652 company wouldn't even make the local news. You keep telling yourself that you matter, pal. I disagree with CW's blunt statement. I think there is an important distinction between "unnecessary use of tax dollars" and telling a solider "You are a waste of tax dollars." The waste of tax dollars comes in politicians choosing to maintain a military of that size -- those who choose to serve in a military of that size are in no way at fault (they're simply accepting a job that's being offered -- the problem is that there's too many jobs offered), and deserve the utmost respect. That said, your personal attacks (the last bit in this post, and the McDonald's comment) aren't helping anything. I realize CW was the aggressor here, but it somewhat hurts your point if you also engage in name-calling.
  14. QUOTE (The Sir @ Aug 6, 2011 -> 03:35 PM) Even better is the idea that America's heroes came home from Vietnam and the same miserable leftist scum who supported Roe v. Wade came out to greet them with spit and cries of "baby killer". If that isn't ironic, I don't know what is. There is a special place in Hell for those asswipes. I agree that there's a special place in hell for those who denigrated our own members of the military. The way many were treated after they returned home was despicable. However, that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to support Roe v. Wade and public funding for abortions. I fail to see how there's a disconnect there -- enlighten me if I'm missing something.
  15. QUOTE (The Sir @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 11:57 PM) Or government funding for clinics that practice abortion (for or against it, it's ridiculous that public money would be spent on child murder). I can't stop laughing at this sentence. Awesomely phrased.
  16. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) Foo Fighters to Play Metro Saturday Night Tickets are $60 a pop and go on sale in an hour (11 am) over at Metro's website That would have been a fantastic show...but I'm seeing them in a month in St. Paul, so I don't feel too bad. I'm so stoked to see them (this will be my first time).
  17. Clearly we've visited different sites then, Ozzie Jr.
  18. I had commented on a certain post, but on second thought, I don't want to lend it any credence. So, on second thought...Ya'll heard about that newfangled internet invention thing?
  19. Rob Mackowiak says hi. Granted, I'll allow that Mackowiak was never supposed to be a CF and was forced into it, whereas Rios should really be an above average CF.
  20. Fairly interesting article/book review: http://www.mysexprofessor.com/the-science-...ty+Education%29 Possibly NSFW (it's an article about sex, and specifically the validity of monogamy, albeit from an academic perspective).
  21. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 1, 2011 -> 08:23 PM) By that rational, so is Limbaugh. Eh, I think it's safe to say Limbaugh will never win a Nobel. I'd also say there's a difference between listening to a talk-show and making a large-scale purchasing decision.
  22. 6 months, I think. This is a great thing to read when you're starting law school in 3 weeks. Anyway, doesn't this basically mean that you'll just have to get unsubsidized loans instead of subsidized? You won't have to actually pay them back during school, they'll just capitalize.
  23. QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 04:51 PM) Glass has been doing a great job and is creating excellent support for the football program; however, Greenspan does at least deserve credit for starting the stadium improvements and facility additions for the athletic department. That's about the only thing he deserves credit for, but it's a big one. I love Glass though; he's exactly the personality we needed in that role for years. Definitely. Greenspan deserves credit for getting the finances in order, which allowed Glass to do what he's done (and I'm really happy with Glass so far). I think Greenspan was more your time though, Greasy. Greenspan was fired at the end of my freshman year (my freshman year was 07-08, when all the Sampson stuff went down). Just graduated this past year...statistically the worst four years in IU basketball history. At least we were 2-2 in Bucket games.
  24. QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 10:18 PM) I see no reason for Naser Abdo to live to see 2012. Wait, what? No attack was carried out. This was stopped before it happened. I don't think you can receive a death sentence for merely attempting to do something, even the murdering of US citizens/servicemen. On a related note, does this legally constitute a treasonous act, or is there some "intent to commit treason" law this would fall under?
  25. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:18 PM) In essence, UNC football is a giant cluster@#!$, and will continue to be for many years as the academia types try to keep football from mattering. They don't believe football success and being an elite academic institution can coincide. Tell them Texas and USC say hello.
