  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 03:38 PM) Indiana's National Championship Train takes a hit. According to Andy Katz, Maurice Creek suffers Achilles tear, likely out for the season I feel so bad for that kid, he has the worst time with injuries. In terms of this season though, it doesn't affect anything, at least to me -- I wasn't including him any rotation projections, because I had no idea what his health status would be (though I certainly didn't expect him to get injured again).
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 9, 2011 -> 09:32 PM) Minneapolis Hilton. The Geological Society of America meeting is at the conference center this week. I'm here through Thursday morning. Ah, neato. We should grab a drink at some point this week.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 9, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) So did the Homeland premiere have the most uncomfortable sex scene ever? Yeah, it would have been awkward even if it was the two of them, but the fact that we we're watching it with Claire Danes on her monitor was just f***ed up. Also, Shameless is probably my favorite show. Absolutely incredible.
  4. I'm trying to find someway to keep a good notepad on my desktop. I have Google Desktop, but I don't like the note gadgets that work (1 or 2 that looked good didn't work for some reason), and I tried the one that comes with Windows, but those are too big for my tastes. Also, Google discontinued support of their Desktop application. Does anyone know of a good notepad desktop gadget, or better yet, know of a good replacement for Google Desktop that does essentially the same thing (but also has good note stuff)?
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 09:51 PM) Apparently I'm staying in the same hotel as the Minnesota Vikings. Where do they stay? Hilton? Hyatt? Doubletree? Also, why are you here?
  6. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 03:43 PM) So Im trying to plan a spring break trip for a bunch of seniors, and we thought South Padre Island, TX would be awesome to go to, so I found a great place on the beach for a reasonable price but when I emailed them for more details they said if we need a parent present, even though all of us would be 21. Im trying to keep the costs low, and renting a house seems like the best choice, but any ideas on how to convince them or alternatives for us? A parent? That's weird. We never had to do anything like that (though I went to Fort Lauderdale and Panama City, never to South Padre). I had some friends who went to South Padre, they had a blast. Panama City was fun, but wow...that place is nuts. Apparently 50 people died there from 2000-2010 during the 6-week spring break period, and I would believe it...but honestly I think the number should be higher. I'm not saying it's not a lot of fun, because it's awesome...but it's WILD, and I'm surprised more people don't get wasted and fall off balconies.

Yeah, I thought American Horror Story too. A really good sign is that I wasn't just decently scared (there was some creepy scenes), but I'm also waiting to see where they take the story. I'll stick around for a bit. Homeland was also really good.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 04:40 PM) Just watch "Homeland" already so we can talk about that instead! Yeah, I set it up tape the pilot since I missed it the first go around. I can't wait to watch it, hopefully tonight if I get enough work done. I like Damian Lewis (or anyone who was in Band of Brothers) a lot.
  9. QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 10:32 PM) lol, tell that to He Gawn.. Without going back to check posts, he's mostly been talking about 2012 and beyond, isn't he? I think his expectations for this year are higher than mine (NCAA berth like 50% possible, whereas I think we'll just miss the NIT), but they're not outrageously ludicrous.

I think I'm going to give American Horror Story (FX) a shot. The one thing that's holding me back is that Ryan Murphy is one of the creators, and I'm not a fan of his. Just comes off like a jerk (and more importantly, I don't like his TV shows -- though, admittedly, I never actually watched Nip/Tuck).
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) Talk to a lawyer first. Be sure that is a good idea and couldn't undermine a case of a changed will in the future. This. It's not too hard to set things up so your dad gets paid out of your grandpa's estate for any medical bills your dad has paid and whatnot (assuming there is money in the estate, and your dad is paying the bills for some other reason). And that's even if your aunt finds a way to get all the inheritance.
  12. Prediction: Penn St 41 IU 24 Yes, I'm being optimistic. Hey, if we don't lose by 30, I'll be happy.
  13. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:06 PM) I love IU fans, been talking for years, still no results. WE'RE GONNA BE GOOD THOUGH WATCH OUT! I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. Maybe you're listening to the crazies, but any mildly intelligent fan can tell you Crean has had a gigantic free pass up to this point; no one's expected anything. This year, I'm expecting a little below .500 in the B1G, MAYBE .500. If we make the NIT or something my expectations will have been surpassed.

  15. QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 11:37 AM) Hear you all on that. It's the first time in a long time I've actually been excited about Indiana basketball. Same...sort of. I think we'll be way less of a pushover, so that's awesome...but I really can't wait for the 2012 class. Hollowell has a chance to be a Freshman All-American.
  16. QUOTE (SnB @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 02:31 PM) Take your shot then next time you're out. Even if it doesn't work out the way you want, in the long run - you won't regret taking the chance. Definitely agree, but this is the epitome of "easier said than done." It's very hard to do at the time since you have no idea what their response will be.
  17. Dave Martinez, pretty pretty please. Doubt he'd get Konerko to give up his number, though.

Boardwalk Empire premiere tonight. Decent, but not great. Seems like they spent most of the time setting stuff up; wasn't too much action on the whole. The stuff with Van Alden was pretty good, though. Such a strange character.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 08:12 PM) I don't think Person of Interest is for me. I want to like it but the Pilot just seemed too convenient. Kind of how I felt, but it was decent enough I'll keep watching for now.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 09:13 AM) Toews and Confused Oh that's brilliant. I might have to steal that.
  21. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 06:50 PM) We're not in the top half of the Big Ten? Again, we're talking THIS year. Of those 6 teams you listed, I'd say 2 are clearly better than us, that's about it. This year, Penn St, Iowa, OSU, and Michigan are not even close to "definitely ahead" of Illinois, if ahead at all. I'll eat crow if this doesn't happen, but I bet every team I listed has a better B1G record than Illinois.
  22. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 11:39 PM) We're not a bottom feeder right now - we're talking about current/future state of the program, per your original post. Last 9 years not exactly relevant to that. This seems like grasping at straws. A big part of the "bottom feeder" thing is perception -- which is heavily influenced by the last 9 years of performance (or lackthereof). I mean, is Illinois a "bottom feeder" in the same way IU or Minnesota (and really, putting Minnesota in our company is a bit disingenuous to them, ha!) is? No; but they're nowhere near the top (Not even in the top half, as Michigan, Ohio St., Nebraska, Iowa, Penn St., and Wisconsin are definitely ahead of them).
  23. It's kind of amusing to me how quickly law school has changed my thought process. I'm only four weeks in, but it's already being drilled into me that in general, juries are the fact finders -- not judges. And not only that, but how sacred that role is held in the legal system; judges (especially appellate judges) don't want to encroach on the role of juries. They're there simply to interpret the appropriate law and and communicate that to the jury, who then applies it to the facts they've found (unless of course it's in appellate court, in which case there's no jury, obviously). The point is, a month ago I would have been more tempted to agree with those who are saying that this was ridiculous. And maybe it was -- but to say Troy Davis didn't get his "day in court" seems beyond rational thought. I'll note, however, that much of this ties into something someone earlier mentioned, and that's concerning media portrayals. I'm really skeptical about stories like this that the media has ran with, and you don't really know the facts anymore...it's essentially become hearsay on top of hearsay on top of hearsay. EDIT: I realized the above might be a bit misleading. I actually think that, given what I know of the case (and this is difficult, given the media problems mentioned), Davis shouldn't have been executed last night. I'm more concerned with the reaction of the general public, from what I've seen here and other places.
  24. I really had no idea where to put this, so I'm throwing it here. Mods, please move/create its own thread/whatever if can think of a more suitable place. This is a somewhat interesting take on a situation I hadn't heard about. Interesting, of course, because it's a linguistics blog, not some partisan (left OR right) news site. From the facts presented, it seems the girl was being ridiculous. What say you?
