I have to say that Tyler Flowers, in limited time this year obviously, is impressing me with his bat. Not so in the last couple years

I have been asking what the "nasty factor" is tht you see on MLB Gameday. I hjave never got an answer so I Googled it: In case anyone else is interested The "nasty" field is presumably a crude attempt to calculate how hard to hit a particular pitch was, on a scale of 0-100. My initial cursory look at the data indicates that they are calculating the "nasty" factor mostly based on the location of the pitch, a linear calculation of how close it is to the edges and away from the heart of the zone. For the fastball, MLBAM does not appear to be including anything related to the movement or speed of the pitch into the "nasty" factor. For the curveball, they appear to be rating sweeping curveballs as significantly more nasty than 12-to-6 curveballs. Anyway, I'm not sure that any of this matters as more than a curiosity. As a sabermetric community we have much better approaches available for measuring the nastiness of a pitch. )

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2011 -> 08:39 PM) But it wasn't nearly as bad as "ace" Jimenez in one single inning...he made it an almost impossible comeback. Now that they're within 1 run, they really need to win or it's much worse than just getting blown out. Seems the Tribe gave up a couple top pitching prospects who are performing very well in the minors

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 21, 2011 -> 08:37 PM) how can you in good conscience ever give Dunn another start this season. I know, I love beating a dead horse. But Lilli even hits for more power and plays better 1B. And yet you hear folks calling for Lilli to be traded

I am checking in. Been watching the LLWS as Billings is playing LA.

Carlos Quentin sprained AC joint in shoulder

Day to day is bad enough with a guy that is your #2 homer and RBI guy bit it's a heckuva lot better than out for the rest of the season. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2011 -> 05:26 PM) I'm not sure about most valuable. It would be close, because of his contract ascending dramatically in the coming years and questions about his age. He doesn't seem to have the type of body that will break down in his early 30's, but you never can tell these days. Certainly you could make arguments now between Floyd, Ramirez, Sale, Santos, Viciedo and Danks (although moreso prior to the 2011 season) as to our most valuable asset. I think we can makes some moves to shed salary without trading away the nucleus of our team. Build your team around pitching and defense.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 21, 2011 -> 05:30 PM) Ramirez is a combination of too expensive/too old/not good enough to build around. I think we have some too expensive players who are not performing, but Ramirez is not one of them

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Aug 21, 2011 -> 05:48 AM) Easy... I wrote that tongue in cheek. He's still pretty awful. I am sure you didn't mean anything by it, but gotta think about those things before posting. Alex has been bad just like Dunn and Beckham and some others and they know it. Glad to see he isn't hanging his head and giving up though

Saw the game on TV. It was a fun game made much more so when we won. That Lillibridge is a super sub. Alex hit that ball hard too. Watching the replays there really wasn't much Rios could have done different when he didn't score from 3B. What if he had been caught off third thinking it would drop? Imagine the screaming here and calls to break his leg in 4 places. I think that that comment was inappropriate and we need to think a little bit more before advocating a player get hurt.

Let's win it

The post seemed to turn to Beckham needing to turn it around. What would trading Ramirez do for us there? I don't think you trade a silver slugger SS still learning at the big league level. He is a person you build around. I also think Beckham can get on track and having him and Ramirez together will be a major plus. Lot of areas to look at to improve this team, but saying we should trade Ramirez is missing the point. We are 5 games out now because of no production from Dunn-Rios-Beckham and struggles by some others early.

See you all behind the big screen

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 03:09 PM) Doesn't that require people being on base and in scoring position in front of him? Or if it's Konerko, at 3b? Well, what I would really like to see is some of thse home runs he is so famous for and we were promised

Dunn
-
Adma Dunn got two singles last night. That's not bad except we haven't seen an extra base hit or RBI in awhile. But maybe he is starting to make contact with the ball now adn not the air.
-
Dunn had two hits in Thursdays game. What I want to see is some RBI's

Well now, happiness for the Sox is short lived. Laporta hits a two run homer. 2-1 Tribe. I hope we can do something in this game except count just on Paulie. The guy is carrying the load dmn needs some help from our other hitters -

Hand it to Zach Stewart. And Humber too. They are battlers. I like their make up even though Phil might be running on fumes in August
