QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 28, 2008 -> 06:21 PM) I would assume that Dye or Fields would be; depending on how Viciedo does in Spring Training. Dye plays a very good RF and Fields couldn't cut the mustard in LF so why would it be different at 1B? He isn't a good fielder as it is

QUOTE (tommy @ Dec 28, 2008 -> 02:14 PM) Now that the San Francisco Giants have lefty veteran Randy Johnson locked up, they are willing to listen to offers involving Jonathan Sanchez. Chris Haft of MLB.com asked Giants general manager Brian Sabean about the possibility after signing Johnson. MLBtraderumors.com This I don't believe at all. They have the Big Unit for one yearand my guess is that's all. He wants his 300th win and will get it in SF and probably retire.

Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie
elrockinMT replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 27, 2008 -> 06:35 PM) The idea here is simple - sell high, and emphasize getting what the team lacks. Dye is getting older, but still competent in RF and very good offensively. He has (I think) 1 year left on his contract, and maybe an option year. His value now is high, but in a year, won't be. With his declining age, he's approaching a point where he needs to be a 1B or DH. PK is also getting older and has shown health issues, and his 2008 was a steep decline. Now, he may bounce back in 2009, or might not. He's got 2 years left under contract. He's still got decent value, but in a year its less, and a year after that its nothing. So, those are two pieces that could net the team some things it is more sorely lacking - a starting quality pitcher, or maybe a leadoff hitting OF or the like. I don't think its a good idea to replace both, though. I'd still like to see, if possible... PK go to LAA for Figgins to play CF, go get another starting pitcher, and acquire one of KC's cheaper and young-ish first base hoard. That improves the overall team without increasing payroll. I most certainly can appreciate the idea behind trtades, but I don't think Dye and Konerko should be the bait to bring in either one of the needs you mention. You fill one need and open up another. If we need a quality starter I am thinking the FA market still has a few left and the price may actually be reasonable. PK is worth more than Figgins by himself IMO anyway.Plus we are starting to see a backlog of potential 3Bmen being added to this team already. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 27, 2008 -> 09:47 PM) I must have been watching a Benjamin Button preview in the background. I want to sign up for that "declining age" syndrome. Thanks for the humor though it helps get through the winter months when you can crack a grin once in awhile -
Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) Just imagine all the angst here about us being cheap if we lost both K Rod and Texiera in the same off season. The Angels are gonna have to replace the offense-especially with the crosstown Dodgers on the upswing What I find in these published rumor reports irritates me to no end. The way the articles read IMO is that the Sox shoulds just be jumping with glee that the Angels see us as the 2nd or third best option and will take Dye and/or Konerko of our hands. We are supposed to feel grateful about this apparently. In my mind Dye and Konerko are two top of the line players and we will be weakening ourselves if we trade them. The goal is to get better not strengthen the Angels or any other team at our expense. -
Obsessed with (the lack of) Sox off-season moves?

QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) The expression comes from the image of people sitting around a hot wood or coal burning stove in the old days, talking about baseball as they long for spring. Good thing we aren't all in Alaska then. That's all we would do is sit around a hot stove talking baseball and waiting for the Eskimo League to begin -
Someone at ESPN must be smoking crack

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 10:46 PM) Oh not this again... I agree. Let's drop this line please. Getting abck to ESPN look at the fact they have Josh Fields in LF? Is this a 2007 line up or something? -
Obsessed with (the lack of) Sox off-season moves?
elrockinMT replied to shipps's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I sense people's frustration about a seeming lack of impact moves except to slash salary. We may have picked up some younger players, but are they ready to produce and contribute to the big league club? I personally have to step back and accept that the Sox will not ever be a contender for the likes of Sabathia, Burnett, Manny Ramirez or Mark Texeira. It seems only the yankmees have that kind of dough. I am hioping to see some of the good players still left on the FA market be targted by the Sox. We need to shore up our starting staff and maybe our bullpen as well as keep our eyes on 2B, SS, CF and 3B possibilities if the right move can be made. I want to compete for the pennant next season and I am not sure we are there at this time. I find myself checking several times a day on Soxtalk and the Chisox & MLB sites and I must remind myself that I have a job!!! -
Kalapse you did a fine job. I just was looking over your chart and it looks to me like we just shaved $25M off with some of the winter moves. We can sign Manny Ramirez or Mark Texeria now!

QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 02:55 AM) Saw this in recent minor league transactions... Former Sox minor league pitcher Joe Torres signed with Texas for 2009. The 10th overall pick by the Angels in 2000, Torres had perhaps his finest pro season this year with the Birmingham Barons, going 3-1, 2.68 with 59 strikeouts, 31 walks and two home runs allowed in 50 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old made 59 appearances out of the Barons bullpen. Torres pitched in the White Sox system in both 2007 and 2008. Going on 9 years in the minors and finally showed some success? Not knowing his past history I would guess it's about time he showed something, but it's at the AA level and I wouls also guess there just wasn't any future with the Sox.

I feel strongly both ways about these stats and Marquez B) Actually I have to say is all we can do is hope we get a good return from the Swisher trade. I am not sold on previous yeasr minor league stats either, but talent can be molded into a winner

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) Obviously Garland would fit back into our rotation perfectly with the emergence of Danks and Floyd. It would give Ozzie the flexibility to have a L,R,L,R,L rotation the entire season. If Stone is right and the market drops in January i would love to have Garland for $8 million/season with incentives. . But im guessing he gets nothing less than 10 mill/season... Could be and I would love to Jon Garland back with the Sox

No long-term extension talks for Bobby Jenks

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 05:45 AM) 3/9? Might as well see if he will pitch for free at that rate. Exactly. He may love the Sox, but it's more like 3 years for $5 or more million a year -
QUOTE (BearSox @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 02:47 AM) The more I've been thinking about it, the more I like the idea of bringing Garland back. He's only 29, and has consistently been a solid big league pitcher and innings eater his whole career, and has shown the ability to step up in the big game. His value is relatively low right now, and I think it'd be reasonable to say we could get him on a deal of something like 3 years, 27-30 million. Also, a thing that might help is him possibly getting more work with the 5th starter job likely filled by a rookie, and Danks and/or Floyd possibly do for a down year. Garland getting less rest would help his sinker a lot, IMO, and make him more effective. I would not mind a rotation of: 1. Buehrle 2. Floyd 3. Danks 4. Garland 5. Poreda (I hope he wins the job as I think CR would have a lot more success in a long relief type of role) Garland still equates to a good winning pitcher and might benefit with being back with his buddies exp. Buerhle. I wouldn't mind the Sox giving him a shot again.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 01:26 AM) Just like my belief to this day that Valentin was a better defender than Royce Clayton. Same type of argument. I have to say right here-right now: I liked Jose Valentin and wouldn't have a problem if the team resigns Uribe, which it probably won't

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 07:03 PM) Everyone who slams OC's fielding, I'll just be real interested to see how bad we still wanted him out of here ...if or when Alexei has struggles acclimating to the position at this level of play. A team player attitude is very important for sure, but I think Cabrera for all the hits he took was coming around. He is a talented defender and did what was asked of him in the #1 hitting spot, etc. OC is a very good SS and probably deserved this award.

Clayton Richard ready to fight for rotation spot
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 07:03 PM) If he wants $12-13 million per season for 3 years, that's the exact same contract we got out from under with Vazquez. I'm fine with Garland to "hold down the fort" for 2 seasons at $10 million per season, but nothing above that makes financial/payroll/economic sense for the White Sox, at least in their current mode of doing business. After the marquee players got all that money I am guessing sanity returns to the salaries given out -
Clayton Richard ready to fight for rotation spot
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Richard will get his chance. Maybe the Sox will sign the likes of Jon Garland as the #4 starter for the team in 2009? I see no reason not to give him another go with the team -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 06:17 AM) I wouldn't have minded a trade for Taveras earlier, but now we know he's hurt. The f***ing Nationals (I'm pretty sure it was them) wouldn't take him because he couldn't pass a physical. Anderson has earned a starting spot. He did everything asked of him last year, and I didn't hear any complaints. Give him the chance he has worked for. This I agree with it

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:49 PM) With the Yanks losing Abreu, they need a RFer. So wouldn't a Dye for Ian Kennedy or Phil Hughes trade make sense for both teams? The Yanks would have no problem eating Dye's contract, and we would get the young starter we want in Kennedy or Hughes. It makes no sense for the Yanks to keep both of Kennedy and Hughes around (or ruining their careers by making them relievers). With the Yanks already signing CC and agreeing to terms with Burnett, it seems like they'll have a clot of starters. I also think they will sign one of Lowe or Sheets as well. Thoughts? Are we suddenly desperate to trade Jermaiune Dye? One of the better clutch hitters and quiet leader and an above average fielde and we give him to the Yankmees for an underperformng pitcher!? I hope we keep JD

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

We would be better off using our own talent to fill the CF and or 4th and 5th OF positions -
QUOTE (beck72 @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 08:26 PM) Kenny also said he wanted to reward the sox minor league players who are 'playing the game the right way', ie, the way the sox are teaching them. He mentioned Chris Getz 1st, then Fields, Anderson, Owens. KW said "people are watching". I take it to meant that the players and staff in the minors are looking to see if these position players will be given a chance to succeed. That the feeling out there is that these players have done what KW and staff have asked and want to see if they'll be given a chance to play everyday. From the sounds of it, I think you can pencil in Getz and Fields in the lineup--unless they get beat out by in house options such as Lillibridge and Viceido respectively. KW talked again about Fields "playing on 1 leg" in 2008. I also caught the tail end of a conversation where KW said "he could steal 40 bases and play stellar defense if he played everyday". I was scared that he was talking about Owens but he was talking about Lillibridge. As much s we al like to see impact trades I have to agree with KW that developing our own and letting them have the chance to suceed is the right way to go.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 11:05 PM) Good point. I think it's very possible the Yankees could still come 3rd in that division next season. Don't forget they've lost Giambi and Abreu also, and they've basically replaced those 2 with Swisher and most likely Mike Cameron also. Don't think that's really an upgrade there. Phillip Hughes is basically the key in determining whether or not the Yankees make the playoffs in 2009 IMHO. Didn't we see this hapen before with the Yankmees? They throw all kinds of money on pitchers and then they colapse (injuries) and the Yanks get stuck paying inflated salaries and getting nothing back but medical bills. For sure they are the best team money can buy! But, I guess you can't fault them a least they have a committment to winning.

Hanging with Mr. Cooper... Daniel Cabrera non-tendered
elrockinMT replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 07:55 AM) I loved "Hanging with Mr. Cooper"... Great sitcom. I'd be fine with giving Cabrera a shot. As a #1/2 starter, he definitely failed expectations. But, if he's only our 4 or 5, then I think we could live with his inconsistency. Not if you want to win a pennant. If the right person is out there I can see a FA signing, but I would really think developing our own pitching prospects is a better way to go -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:40 PM) I have little problem with this. It's now down to him and Owens for the starting CF job. Interesting that you say that, but I don't think he will be the starting CF'er. I also don't think the Sox are seeing him as a starter, but I suppose anything can happen.
