Official 2008-2009 NBA Thread
nitetrain8601 replied to The Beast's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Well it would be about 34 million coming off the books. It is indeed the last hurrah for the Pistons. They're going to have money to go after presumably Carlos Boozer this year and then be a player for a major FA in 2010, though I don't see them landing one that year. -
QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 01:46 PM) You have completely ignored everything I said. I already stated that burn in is not really an issue with plasma's anymore. And yes the representatives are obviously biased towards their own brands but some tv's make plasma's/lcd's like Samsung and Panasonic and I get information straight from them about the differences and advantages of one over the other. Also like I previously stated the Panasonic representative or one of them atleast who frequently visits our store has even admitted he owns a LCD himself and a Samsung at that. http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdtv-plasmavslcd.shtml Seems like those experts who come into your store need to learn a little more about technology. Unless I'm buying my own Jet Plane, I'll be watching the Plasma.

I'm mentally prepared to see Clayton be our fifth starter.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 02:04 PM) I hope it's a very reduced salary. I really don't see the point of bringing Jr. back. Nostalgia purposes. He's Ken Griffey Jr! The one player that could play on my team for as long as he wanted to. Even if he was 70.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 09:44 AM) Blanco is 37. I still want him, but I didn't realize he was so old. I did. Regardless, for a backup catcher, it's not so bad. He still is a prime defender and has the ability to do what none of our catchers minus Miguel Olivo was able to do and that's throw out runners. 2 years, 2 million sounds about right. Heck give him 1 year 3 million with a team option for a 2nd year. In other news, apparently Griffey really wants to come back and will gauge what will it take for him to be brought back to the Southside. From all accounts, and this is my personal opinion after reading all articles, playing with the White Sox is his first choice.

Bingo. It's pretty much safe to say, Blu Ray is far from dying. It's on the up and up. For some reason, some people forget(this is not aimed at anyone particular because it is a good discussion) that DVD took awhile to completely take off.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) They dont sell anything though, they work for the company for example Sharp and he tells us all the features the Sharp tv has and advantage over other tv's, obviously shows a little bias towards his own brand compared to others. But than when the Samsung person comes in he informs on both the plasma/lcd's. Hell even the Panasonic representative who comes in as a regular admitted he himself had a Samsung lcd instead of a Panasonic plasma. You admit you receive bias statements. Of course, they are going to say, "My brand of tv is better because X X and X." From what you posted so far regarding burn-in and such, the people you are receiving your info from are giving you wrong information. The information you have provided us from your sources is information that was relevant about 5 years ago. Burn-in is no longer an issue with pixel shifting, white screen, and rolling screens. I'm not saying Plasma's are definitely better than LCD's or vice versa. Each has their perks. For picture quality, however, Plasma is by far the best. I suggest reading AVSForums as well. It is one of the best and most well respected websites on audio/video.

QUOTE (Cubano @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 11:49 AM) Expect the same mental mistakes at SS now. I prefer that Alexei stay at 2B with one year under his belt there. I also rather have Alexei at 2B and sign an Edgar Renteria.
-
Yes, please stop with the Javy to Seattle ideas. He has no trade clauses that would prevent that from ever happening.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 09:31 AM) Save a ton of dough I got a 65" DLP for a built in wall unit and can't really tell the difference with the 48" LCD I have. Most poeple can not tell the difference between the two and it was about $1,000 less. Only bad thing about the DLP is that they are fat and the viewing angle and the rainbow effect. Over the years though, they have drastically improved in all three areas. DLP's aren't a bad option at all. Heck, I was close to getting one before deciding on my plasma.

I'm not only thinking this is typical KW talk, I'm hoping it as well. Fields is brutal at 3B defensively. I don't mind Getz having a shot at 2B because I loved what I saw last year. He at the least should get a shot. Nix will probably be the defensive replacement guy. Looks like KW though isn't going to do much through FA, but rather via trades as Stoney said.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 01:30 AM) I'm just saying why introduce that story line where Ari would have to choose? They could've just given it to dana gordon, but they had to have us believe that Ari would give up a 10 million dollar offer to be with his friends, and that's fine, whatever, but the way all the people around him were treating him like s*** for wanting to move up. You don't hold back your friends. It was just not believable, everyone was acting out of character. Maybe that's an occurrence which came up. It's a good plotline. He has a choice to make in which he would be in a ton of power, cast whoever he wants for movies and for movies he wants to make all while making 10 million a year. You forget though, he runs his own agency right now, he's his own boss and Vinny and the guys are basically his best friends. Plus his wife doesn't like the fact that he would be working with Dana Gordon if he did take the job. There are a ton of people who rather live comfortably with friends and family than live an extravagant lifestyle. I mean he already has a Ferrari, a nice huge house, could buy his family anything they want. So what more else is there?
-
Blu Ray is nowhere near being out. A ton of people still prefer to have a hard physical source of their media, whether it be pictures, movies or music. They also like to be able to move that media around from one house to the next. And there are tons of people who still don't have the DL speed equipped for downloading HD streams.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 29, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) Meh. That line at the end where she says "Yeah, well I woulda f***ed him too" was ubber-lame. Sorry, not believable in the slightest that she would do any of that with Turtle. It would have been much more believable if the hand job would have happened an episode or two down the line after they got to know each other. I'm in the camp with those that think the show has gone from a must watch every Sunday to a forced watch. At the end of last season I was ready to drop it from the Sunday night line-up, but I kept with it, if only to see the hot girls. So far I've only been slightly repaid for my investment in it. It seems like every other episode is entertaining (the best this season have been the Ari episodes...as per usual) My big complaint is that the show hasn't evolved at all. It was cool in the beginning because it was a show about 4 "normal" guys who live out every guys' fantasy - single with tons of money and tons of hot chicks to bang. Then it got into some stupid plot elements with Vince, and absolutely no plot development with any other character (nothing too serious anyway). Basically they've kept this mold without changing, but at this point it's just getting old. The "wow" factor of the first season has completely warn off - we need something new. I don't have a problem with E, at least they've tried to do something with his character (though still not enough if he's truly the main character... if he is why didn't they have Ari become the studio head and have E step in as Vince's agent?). Turtle is quiet enough that he doesn't bother me. The worst is Drama. He's the most annoying character with his rants about nothing. It made sense for him to be the "know it all" in the first season, when Vince was a new star and big brother wanted to talk about his experiences in Hollywood. But at this point Vince is ten times more famous (and successful), so it's just stupid (and annoying) for Drama to keep up with that schtick. I get that that's his personality, but at some point in real life someone would have told him to shut up. Plus he constantly whines. It was funny at first, but like everything with this show, it got old. Well it's also based loosely off Wahlberg's and Leo DiCaprio's careers. The real Drama is actually Wahlberg's cousin. And no matter what, doesn't matter if you turn 34 years old, don't you ever find people still giving you advice on life? It's not uncommon or out of this world to see Drama giving Vinny advice still. As far as E not becoming his manager, it's because they need to tie Ari and Vince together. Everyone's biggest complaints about the show beside Dom's first appearance was when Ari wasn't Vince's agent. Now with Ari sticking it out with Vinny, you people are getting mad? I mean think about it, Ari becomes studio head. Okay, what complications does he have as a studio head that would tie to Vince? Basically Ari really wouldn't have any major problems and nowhere the interaction with Vinny his agent would have. Ari not with Vince and the guys ruins the whole show's dynamic.

Boring place if you ask me. They have the same typical places Chicago has. Potbelly's, Jimmy John's, Subway. They do have that BBQ place, but I don't know many of my friends who go there who like it.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) Another issue I have with the characters is "E." I don't know exactly when it occurred, but I've grown to dislike him. Would anyone be friends with this guy in real life if he had the same personality as the show? He's one step below Turtle in overall obnoxiousness. Cmon, was anything funnier than watching Eric tell the one Weinstein to "WALK AWAY" in his tough guy tone? hahahaha. I would have kicked his ass around the sidewalk. Eric just comes off as this smug asshole suffering from little guy syndrome. I understand his value to the show, though. He at least has ambition and intelligence. Well Eric is the main character of the show, so he's going to be playing a huge part in any episode as Vinny's manager. And yes, I'm not speaking out of my ass, it's been confirmed by Doug Ellin, the show's main character is E contrary to popular belief. Now E and the boys are from Queens, so they have tough skin. That's why you saw everyone back him up. If you haven't noticed, E is the mouthpiece for the group.

And according to reports, the Warriors want Joakim added to the deal, so the Bulls want Brandon Wright. -

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Oct 29, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) The Al Harrington news makes no sense at all. In my opinion, the Bulls need some dead eye spot up jump shooters (DRose is going to create a lot of open shots - we saw some of that last night) or a back to the basket scorer. Al Harrington fits neither of these roles. He's a career 45% shooter and shot 43% from the floor last year. Realistically Harrington plays the exact same role that Deng and Noc play. The Bulls have the luxury of having a glut of guards that they can trade, but this seems to me like it would be making a deal for the sake of making a deal. I hope Pax passes on this one. I am not a huge fan of Harrington, but he's better than Noc and not as much of a lacky like Deng. He would stretch the floor with his 3 point shot. Yes, he isn't a true PF in my mind and people need to stop pegging him as one, but Harrington would work with a dynamic playmaker like Rose moreso than Deng. Heck, Noc works better with Noc over Deng simply because he can stretch the floor and is actually aggressive. -
I dislike the job Blago has done. Wouldn't that be something if the Daley brothers ran the state though?

2008 World Series - Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays
nitetrain8601 replied to knightni's topic in The Diamond Club
Well according to the news last night, Selig said he would've postponed the game regardless if the Rays tied it. I'm guessing I'm the only one who watched. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 27, 2008 -> 09:26 PM) Because a struggling franchise has never been turned around before and you wouldn't want to put your name on that? How many franchises have you seen turned around when the ownership declares ahead of time that all decisions will go through them and the GM would have less rights there than anywhere else? Basically, ownership is going to make the decisions, therefore he really doesn't have to do much at all. Again, he's just there to collect a paycheck. I'm not knocking him for it.
-
He's going there to collect a paycheck. That's the only reason I would go.

QUOTE (Steff @ Oct 25, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) I'm sure you'll hear about it before it goes to rental so it's just up to you if you want to see it before that happens. Totally predictable from the way they left it and I had really hoped that didn't jump the shark... but they did. And bad. I think this will be the last one I see in the theater. 2 more are supposedly in the works. I honestly can't see where there is to go from where they are now. So disappointed. I agree. I saw it in theaters and boy was that a god awful film. I heard they're planning up to 9. One of the worst movies I've seen. We originally wanted to see Changeling, but the closest theater was in downtown(I'm out in Oak Lawn), so we thought Saw V would be great considering it was sold out. Big mistake.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 06:03 PM) Also, Turtle is supposed to hook up with Jamie Lynn Sigler? GMAFB! He won't take it so he doesn't piss off his wife who doesn't him working with Dana Gordon and so he could fully revive Vince's career.
-
I agree. This season has been funny and it has a good story going so far, the thing is, they are progressing it sooooooooo damn slowly.
