President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 02:46 PM) I agree with it, it's incentive to own something versus renting it. Owning property is a mass undertaking...and its helpful to communities and the stability of neighborhoods...I absolutely think it should be incentivized over renting. But it perversely incentivizes leverage, and it's biggest winners are upper middle class, who can already afford a home. If you want to incentivize first time home ownership there are better ways. But, whatever, not the biggest deal in housing policy world anyway. It's largely popular, if people want it, whatever.

2016-2017 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 02:47 PM) Isn't this crap worse for you than a rebuild? I'm not going to argue the Jimmy trade stuff with anyone anymore as everyone knows where I stand on that but years like this and last to me are so much worse than a rebuild. And once again, not speaking for anyone else here but personally I'd much rather take time in a rebuild than sit around the middle of the conference(if we do go for it and get back to that point) since you're never going to be able to luck yourself into a championship in basketball like you can in baseball. Ha, I understand where you are coming from but no this isn't as bad. I love watching bulls when winter is slow and truly terrible basketball just sucks to watch. Like, those years where Ron Mercer was our best player...I just can't. And funny thing going back to looking at those 98-03 years, they actually acquired a lot of assets, which you'd like. They largely drafted well. But it takes so long to become a competitive team when you start from zero, and unlike Baseball, there is no watching the minors. Unlike football, there is no quick turnaround. But yeah, I get this isn't a good place to be but honestly would be fine just being a Raptors level team, which I think we could build around Jimmy. Core i'd build around: Jimmy, McDermott, Felicio, Grant. Lopez in a way because he's fine, I kinda like him now. Get rid of: Gibson (who is the only actual good player on this list), Rondo, Mirotic, See if Portis can become an actual 4, stop trying him at 5. He's probably bad. And then just place all of your trust in Zipser.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 02:39 PM) I am plenty calm. Just sick of reading your same BS over and over and over again. #1) This is complete and total conjecture. Reed is no longer a prospect, but if he were, he would be in their top 3. This guy was the #2 prospect behind Bregman 12 months ago and a top 20 guy in the whole game. Sure, he had a brutal cup of coffee in the majors, but his value is not nearly as far in the s***ter as you make it out to be. And again - you're making the giant leaps of assumption. "Paulino + 2 is about equal to Reed and Fischer". How can you make that determination when you have zero clue what the +2 is? They could be 19 year old rookie ballers for all we know, and since the names weren't reported, it is far safer to assume they are closer to a throw in then a top 100 prospect. #2) An extra year of control is a pretty big deal. A year ago, someone would have laughed at you had you said Q was more valuable that Archer. Archer is 5 years younger, he is cheaper, and controlled longer. These are meaningful facts. #3) I never said Tucker, Reed, Fischer, and Martes beats the Sale deal. I said it "rivals" the Sale deal, and beats the Eaton deal. #4) LOL. Moncada is a far better prospect than Tucker, but the rest of the deal after those two this made up Astros package is far better. Kopech is maybe a tad better prospect that Martes, but certainyl not ">>". These guys were just ranked #4 and #5 respectively on the updated RHP top 10. ITs close to a wash, and while Kopech maybe has a higher upside, Martes is a safer bet and closer to the bigs. And you Basabe = Reed comparison made me laugh. Thanks for that. ?

2016-2017 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 11:24 AM) So in that case, I presume you are okay then sticking with Butler and trying a different path? I'd have to think that Boston offer I mentioned would be pretty top dollar. I don't see too many teams with more assets to make it work. Maybe we'll see Chris Bosh and Chris Paul join Wade and Butler and we'll be the old man banana boat crew plus Buckets. Yeah it's a good base just think I'd like more players back. I have said it before, I have much less of a stomach for a bulls rebuild now with the white sox and bears where they are. And basketball rebuilds can be so slow. But mainly, I am infuriated by the idea that Gar Forman would be in charge of this trade. With the white sox, I was in support of getting rid of KW/Hahn but also felt that if they started a rebuild it would be a good move and a sign of adjustment toward better decisionmaking. But for the Bulls, this is the mess Forman made. He got his coach. He's drafted this team. He's signed these players. This is his failure. I'd be happy if Bulls fired Forman and new guy still said let's make it work with Butler. But the main problem is this roster construction is SO stupid.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
I don't like subsidies like the one they cut. As policy, don't agree with the mortgage interest tax deduction, but obviously benefit hugely from it. If it was eliminated I would expect a reason for it. Just weird this was a day one activity.

Chicago and its taxes; is it dying?
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 09:39 AM) It's still violent and not getting better. Have 4 people shot and 3 women attacked within 2 blocks of where you live in 6 months . I doubt you would think it's not so bad. I live in an upscale neighborhood, and have been here over 2 decades. This crap isn't supposed to happen, and used not happen. It's one reason why my taxes increased. It's not getting better. Hoping for a change, but I have zero confidence in Rahm getting it done. I am a democrat, and think Rahm is an awful mayor. It's really bad, and their clearance rate is 30 points below national average. They aren't solving crimes and aren't preventing them. The worst part about Rahm is it does not even appear he is trying. Would you say crime has even been a focus of his policy? I wouldn't. I don't really care that he's a democrat, local politics are different. The taxing of every transaction IS terrible. People like seeing public services and works like the el go up, but taxes as health policy is really offputting to me. I think it can work on bigger items, but when you are talking about daily transactions it's just builds a bad relationship between tax payer and gov't.

Chicago and its taxes; is it dying?
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 04:57 AM) Age does not grant wisdom, which does not grant the ability to teach. I have a principal in my family. Routinely says the teachers they get out of ISU's education program are better than those that specialized in something like math or English and went into teaching after.

Chicago and its taxes; is it dying?
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 11:51 AM) Yes but those taxes are palpable. So, it's a little easier to take. How do I know? I live here too! Quick story. We forgot to close our garage door and our car was broken into. We called the police to file a report. They said someone would be out within the hour. 10 minutes later, the doorbell rings. My wife goes to the back with the officer. After a couple of minutes, she gets a call that someone is breaking into a car in a garage nearby. The officer says to my wife, "I have to respond to this, another officer should be by in a day or two." Literally 5 minutes later, the doorbell rings again. Another officer is there to finish up the report. Two weeks later, the phone rings. I pick up the phone and it's the Oak Park Police Department. "Good morning sir, we don't have any news about your report, but we wanted to check in to see how your service was. Did the officers answer all your questions?..." etc. You would never get that in the city...and probably most cities or suburbs. Ever since then, the tax burden doesn't seem so burdensome. Oak Park in the 80s had something like the most cops per capita in the country. I think it's less extreme now.

What low-key Sox prospect are you most excited to get a chance
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 10:57 AM) Does Alvarez have a legit shot at getting some ML PT this year? I'm interested in this too. Hoping September at least. I assume Jake Peter is above him on org chart right now.

2016-2017 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 08:05 PM) Awful trade. If you trade with the Celtics you need to get the Nets pick this year, nets pick the following year, and Jaylen Brown. I'd probably argue you need one more, such as Marcus Smart or Crowder. I'd start by asking for the first three pieces plus Crowder. Supposedly Nets and Celtics have talked about trading Jaylen Brown for Lopez (plus some other pieces). I don't even think that's enough honestly.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week
Hmm, I wonder what the best team sox could put together if we swapped Q for Trout. This will occupy some time. Edit: Eh, not so bad so long as you believe stellar rookie campaigns from giolito, lopez, fullmer and moncada.

Keith Law Farm System and Player rankings
Having not read it, it makes sense if you value depth as a main determining factor. Braves, Padres, Yankees. These are farms that are like 30 deep with players with reasonable paths to major leagues. White sox highs are among the highest right now, but after Moncada/Giolito/Lopez graduate, is it a top 15 farm? I can see his reasoning even if it's surprising.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 02:07 PM) This thought process is odd. The 2 seamer has more movement and is more difficult to control than in 4 seasmer, in general. Teams usually take away the 2 seamer from pitchers with poor control. Maybe he is just more comfortable with the 2 seamer and it will help, but the thought process is backwards. Well they HAD taken it away last year, so it must be coming from feedback that Glasnow felt more comfortable with his 2-seamer.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 01:18 PM) I think Wolf knows that he can be the GM of the 49ers now and go into a messed up situation or wait a couple years and be the GM of the Packers. Plus the Packers are pretty much paying him to stay. Still, there are only 32 of those jobs in the world, many do not have restraint to say no when it's their time and are asked. Although the Ravens guys have been big to stay consistently.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week
Interesting Glasnow news, since he is related to Q News: Black Beard’s Delight: Hey ENO! I read an interesting article on Tyler Glasnow this week. He is shortening his delivery and the Pirates are giving him his 2 seam back. Mainly just wanted to share that with you, but does that improve your outlook on him? 12:31 Eno Sarris: If he can throw the two-seam to the middle of the plate because he has confidence in the movement, maybe one or both combined will help his command. He would take a huge leap forward if he could just get ahead more often because the curve is great. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/eno-sarris-...all-chat-11917/

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 11:12 AM) Sounds like the 49ers are also looking at two Packers executives to hire as GM. Never liked hiring a coach first and then a GM, but they would be smart to take one of the Packer guys. Eliot Wolf has backed off. 49ers have had their pick of some really talented people, and I think Shanahan is a good pick, but the amount of people saying no thanks to that job before final decision makes me want to hear the leaked stories after of how dysfunctional this has been.

In Market Streaming!
QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 11:23 AM) I love this, but the reason the MLB was dragging their feet on this is very obvious ... see all the responses above and what I'm thinking myself. As long as you know one person with cable who is willing to share their password, then you don't have to pay for cable to get the Sox and Hawks and bulls, or any college football or basketball games. It's a slippery slope the cable networks have created by forcing you to buy cable packages around sports and jacking up prices of said cable packages around sports only to allow you to stream these games in an "illegal" fashion pretty damn easily. You are going to see some real big market corrections in the future in the cable space. And it's gong to be messy. Along the same lines, a lot of these giant contracts? They are based off giant TV packages... which are based off the fact marketers are willing to pay for ad space during sports because the theory is that if you are watching a live event you are more likely to watch ads. If you're watching a TV show likely you are DVR'ing it and skipping commercials. If this cookie starts to crumble and people cancel their cable subscriptions and start sharing codes? Revenue base is no longer there to support these cable prices, the ads, the tv contracts, the players contracts, etc etc etc. It's a domino effect. Not saying that streaming the Sox or Cubs like this is going to change landscape - I'm saying its a bigger problem than many realize. But at the same point Ill enjoy the ensuing mess, cancel my cable and steal a password. Frees up a good $700-800 a year in my budget while still being able to watch the Sox, Hawks and Redbirds. Sorry If I rambled there, and I didn't re-read my entry, so it may not make complete sense/forgot points in my arugment. The one thing is when companies like HBO have been asked about this they really don't care that people share. They can more accurately report on numbers for people logged in watching, and they can still generate detailed reports for ad revenue then. I'm sure they'll end up about the same.
