QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 17, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) The difference in baseball is there is no cap, which means no floor or ceiling. These basketball teams figure out how much money they have and then they spend it, because outside of saving money, there is no other benefit to being under the cap. Teams worry about perception and its easy for KC/Pitt to say that they cant spend like the Yankees, Red Sox, so why even try as opposed to the Suns/Kings etc where there is a salary cap and therefore fans think "its equal" (you see the same thing in the NFL). The difference is that NFL contracts are basically fake money outside of the bonus, so those teams just dump the guy the next year or 2 if he doesnt work. If there is a hard cap it basically just solidifies what every team will spend. The only way to prevent really bad contracts is to allow teams to dump them at a fraction of the price. True, I'm just imagining in your cap and trade model the maloofs working a 10 million dollar salary and pocketing $40 million.

it appears i killed this thread.

Here's a good article on speculators: Yglesias

$45 is absurd though. I understand it sucks when joe johnson and rudy gay get the max, but i'd argue that the true superstars in the nba could probably make that themselves and deserve it.
-
the nba should close those franchises or buy out their horrid owners (maloofs)

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 17, 2011 -> 02:36 PM) Which benefits by far mostly people in cities, which means half of the country gets left out. that "half" of the country gets a lot more back than they put in.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 17, 2011 -> 06:13 PM) That is kind of my point. You have three incredible players on that Miami team, and they still aren't the favorites to win it all. The Bulls would have only two stars, and a complete lack of depth. Haslem is legit, but Miller is the exact type of player the Bulls would be looking at to fill up their roster at minimum wage. He is absolutely a great example of the type of guys the Bulls would have to bring in. Legit players won't sign for that little money. I understand your point... but in my opinion having the best pg + best center in the game will be a better team than best SG + SF combo in the game plus a good powerforward that makes his points on jump shots.

if this season is going to suck i'd rather it suck while i get to watch vizquel.

whoa, he started off light and then started hitting haymakers.

From Newt Gingrich last week: aka oil subsidies as identity politics. this means i think that won't happen. also yglesias's response was pretty funny:

QUOTE (knightni @ May 17, 2011 -> 12:00 AM) It was crazy watching Asik guard Lebron sometimes. yeah, and not even playing far off of him.
-
is oliver stone making this one too?
-
hopefully the nba refs don't misconstrue that as people wanting the heat in the finals. ahem.
-
It was really incredible that wade and james would go around the screen then get switched by, say, asik, but their lanes were clamped down on the sides, they couldn't move asik and would have to back off or shoot over a 7 footer. It was awesome.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 16, 2011 -> 12:40 PM) That's where basketball IQs for both the coaches and the players come into play. Lebron and Wade's basketball IQs are really high. But it comes down to what balta just said. If lebron is going to beat the bulls, I want it to be because he got hot shooting contesting jumpers. As long as he's not getting wide open looks, it's not a high pct. shot for him. The bulls played great, but the heat will make some adjustments. The bulls just have to keep their home court.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 16, 2011 -> 04:06 AM) Have to love our humility. Deng just shut down one of the best players in the NBA (if not one of the best stat sheet fillers of all time), and he has the intelligence to say "I didn't do anything. He just had an off night." And of course Derrick is always very humble. Hard not to love this team. Haha, I was surprised during the game when they said boozer gave bosh bulletin board material, b/c all the comments from the bulls leading up was the most respectful talk i've seen in the playoffs. If we can pull this off, i'll take the time to really celebrate deng. It is really hard to ask someone to play that hard on defense and execute that big on offense. He's killin it. I had so much to say about this game, but it would take me hours. I spit most of it with my roommate. But the #1 thing, the thing i was most worried about but knew to be true. The bulls are a much better team when they need their energy to help push them over the edge. If they are facing a team who has more scoring talent or whatever, and they need to just play at a higher energy level, they ignite. But more than that, that's probably just a part of it. It was so hard before this watching miami to play and imagine really containing their offense. But beside our amazing help d v. iso, I didn't realize how much our bigs would dominate on the glass and offense. You could see in taj and noah and asik and boozer that they were just like "i'm getting guarded by jamaal magloire? ha". It's just one game, but i do really like to see taj, noah, boozer and asik be that confident against their matchups. And f***, it was nuts, but the heat oculdn't take advantage of the KORVER matchup! Our help was so strong that we could leave him on the floor. What a game. Even rose didn't do that bad against wade.
-
I'm terrified for this series. I'm just hoping for the best. Here's to a lot of pick-and-pops b/w rose and boozer again.
-
plus i bet our marketing costs are pretty high.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 13, 2011 -> 09:52 PM) The Bulls are going to absolutely destroy the Heat. This series won't be close. I hope this is true. But I'm just cautiously optimistic.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 13, 2011 -> 02:04 PM) Yeah for real. Especially when it's early May and we still have one of the worst records in baseball. ooh! Did we move up to just "one of"?

QUOTE (DBAHO @ May 13, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) I think that will definitely be the case whenever Bibby's out on the court, otherwise I think they'll try to keep those 2 as fresh as possible on the offensive side of things. If you put one of those guys on Rose for a whole game, you're probably going to depend on Bosh scoring around 20PTS to keep things running smoothly on offense, and I don't think they can rely on that in a tough playoff style of basketball especially when the Bulls are so good on the interior defense. This is true, but I was also impressed that Lebron stayed as good on offense while having to chase ray allen thru screens on D throughout the game.
-
Yeah, sorry I'm not going to stay up until midnight for games when there are 162 of them.
-
so THERE's the pick and pop. That was an awesome game. I'm not sure I'm prepared to play the heat. I've never hated a team nearly as much as I've loved my own, and here they are going head to head. A BATTLE VS GOOD AND EVIL. Seriously if the bulls don't take the heat, the thunder/mavs have to. If Miami wins it's over for a few years.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 11, 2011 -> 09:30 PM) I highly doubt they verify the source, or else this would be useless to me! From what I gather, you can stream with the app over any Android device or from any PC with internet connectivity. Still waiting on my invite Google you f***ers. Well, I'm sort of waiting to see what pressure the RIAA would put on this. Google is a big company and typically will acquiesce to these things, as we've seen with the youtube.
