Baseball America: Colson Montgomery #38 on Top 100 Update
bmags replied to bmags's topic in FutureSox Board
I have to say this is really nice. When was the last draft pick that was actually a riser? Collins sniffed the top 100. Rodon/Madrigal/Vaughn just kinda maintained their draft value placement. Fulmer fell. Guys like Semien broke into that back 20 and that's where a lot have sat. This feels completely foreign. -
didn't see the first game, saw yesterday...yeah I'm skeptical lol

I have enjoyed lurking. Always fascinating to see how teams try to build winners, so more fun to follow after changes in f.o. Won't have much to say because I kinda faded on hockey after realizing (much like soccer) I did not really know how to tell which players were good or bad (mainly defensively, easy to tell with points etc). After what hawks fans went through last year, going back to just being a really, really bad team is probably easier to take. I've been a bit surprised how little the returns have been, and what kind of returns they targeted. How much value can you really get by using your cap space to grab bad contracts in hockey? Basketball always seems like it's not worth much (stealing 2nd round picks like 76ers did a lot), and baseball never seemed to get you as much as you expected (mid-level prospects). Is it more effective in nhl?

Showalter and Baker continuing to get a lot, if not all, out of the talented teams they take over shows their is a talent to managing. Same with Tito. TLR showing everyone that the Cards are a really good org (that benefits from the league feeding them extra talent every year)

Baseball America: Colson Montgomery #38 on Top 100 Update

I really like getting that Exit velocity data. I think a concern was even though he was walking early on, his hits didn't have that pop that Kath's did. But that has started to change, and I think his power is still sneaky just because of his body type and levers. So we have this plus a very positive review from law on Colson's defense. Exit velo and defense is one of the harder stuff to gauge as fans in this forum so I'm pretty happy. -
pro Snelling. Given sox recent FO plays, hard to believe they'd draft a medical shoulder. Man I really like Chase DeLauter but seems unlikely to get to sox. Keep going LH power, especially since it feels like he barely has to swing for power.

Holy smokes

The best manager arrangements now are an alignment between following PD and analytics / strategy from FO and a manager strong at relationships with players and tactics. But because Sox are so bad at the former they’ll need to keep swinging for the dying breed of superstar managers. Sox really are stuck without a clean FO reset, and considering who would be hiring that, there is really not much we can hope for.
-
Remember when Eaton was traded and a board insider alluded to it being part of a locker room reset then the Sox resigned Eaton because they believed the locker room needed more fire, and then they dfa’d him a few months into the season because he actually does suck and also can’t hit. Also remember when the managers kids were openly airing out locker room gossip and the Sox just let it ride for months/years until the manager basically quit. So weird we are having locker room issues again.

Such a weird coincidence Hahn keeps finding shitty locker rooms under him.

TLR clubhouses always have cliques.

All of this years disappointing teams have now made their run (Red Sox, braves, mariners) Sox…I have me doubts.
-
Burke really hit some friction in AA eh
-
Never thought I could dislike a Sox team more than 2015 but this one has arrived.
-
If the Sox trade for Juan Soto we have a chance.

If I was a Nats fan I’d probably laugh at sox thinking they would have enough…maybe if they pre emotively trade Giolito in a 3 team. Few teams would have the fire power. Maybe I’d want Red Sox (Mayer headliner) or Cards (Gorman/Walker or Liberatore). The white Sox would never seriously go after premiere talent, But yes you should do everything to get guys like this when available. Just like they should have for Betts. -
Veras 0-5 with 5Ks yesterday. Really want to see if Sox can harness this power. Not holding my breath.

Laumann. I agree, esp with Bellingers fall it’s hard to put anyone beside Bryant above him (even though TA >> Bryant currently)

The 2016 draft was an unbelievable disaster. One of the most decorated drafts of the decade, where the Sox had an extra million to spend, and it was a gigantic whiff. Im tired of comparing the Sox against themselves to show competence. He modernized scouting? That’s the job to make sure your dept is competitive. But modernizing should lead to good drafts. Laumann - consistently in worse draft positions and in a terrible JR bind until the hard draft budget CBA - drafted the second best player in 2013 draft, Semien in 2011 in the sixth, and Sale in 2010. In his high draft position year, he drafted Rodon, a top 6 cy young finisher in a competitive year for the Sox. In Hostetlers years he drafted 10th, 11th, 4th, 3rd. Incredibly important drafts for the Sox and he converted…one? Hard to see how his hard work was more impressive than the guy before or after him, even with all of the major league 0 war guys that save Hahn from signing a hostetler chosen major league FA for $5 million who will provide negative war value.

Just what we expected when the year started, fighting with Baltimore for 4th place in wild card race
-
Man hostetler was such a disaster
