QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:55 AM) If he is decent, I can't see him making it out of the AL. We got a chance than!

QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:51 AM) Zero chance I'll see snow today. How about you? All your posts gotta be about weather, eh?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:30 AM) I wonder by how much? I bet they have a good amount of money to work with but Hahn isn't going to sign a guy just to sign someone, and especially if they don't fit into the 3-5 year plan.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:26 AM) I think "better/safer helmets" is a myth. You might be protecting the outside of the head, but the brain is still bouncing around the inside of the skull From what I've heard this is absolutely correct.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:12 AM) So all the people who said "come on, Paulie has a role, look he'll be the platoon DH with Dunn since Dunn is so bad against lefties it makes sense" weren't telling the truth? He has a role but if he wasn't Paul Konerko he wouldn't have been re-signed, period.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:23 AM) Look guys...we're not getting back anything useful for Dunn. If we chip in $10 million+ we might get back some no-name A-baller and that's going to require the Sox to chip in $10 million+. That's just how it's going to be. For crying out loud we signed an extra DH because we didn't feel Adam Dunn had that firm of a grasp on that position even. Oh c'mon now, re-signing PK had nothing to do with Adam Dunn.

QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:33 AM) As an SIU grad, I lean towards this. It's funny but if you're a head coach, you should set a better example to college kids. If they were pros, I'd get more of a kick out of it. The program has been an absolute embarrassment for years now so whatever. Barry has also done this kind of stuff forever, maybe not to this extent but he's been a character forever. That being said, he's also known as one of the better guys around and a great ambassador for the sport and Valley. I'm not going to be embarrassed about him trying to give the team a kick in the ass, I am embarrassed at the continued horrendous play on the court with no sign of that changing. -
QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 05:46 AM) That is a very compelling argument, with which I totally agree. I don't know why people don't concur. Everyone talks about what a "crap shoot" the baseball amateur draft is, and then they proceed to insist that "you take the best available talent". "Best talent" based upon what exactly? Of course, it will be a while before some of the draftees would be ready to be added to the roster, and it's true that the roster could look very different. However, why continue to stock pile a particular position, when you might have a choice to add a player where there is an obvious dearth of future candidates in your organization? As long as there is no clear consensus as to who is the third best talent in the draft, why not pick one of the top candidates based, at least in part, upon perceived needs? Because even if you assume 3b or cf or whatever is take. Up for 5 years there's always a possibility that Eaton or Davidson bust. It'd be silly to not take a guy that you believe is the best player available because you think you have those spots filled, especially when you're probably looking 2-3 years down the road.
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 02:04 AM) I disagree. I think you draft for need when there is no consensus pick. If a consensus top 5 pick falls to pick 20, then you go ahead and take him. But if you are the #3 pick and mock drafts have 3-4 different names going there, you can pick based on position if your scouting reports have them all going that high. I mean, it's hard to compare a pitcher to a 1B, for instance. I 100 percent disagree. The odds of a draft pick being a starting major league player aren't very high no matter what pick you have. If you draft on need instead of who you think is the best available then you're furthering those odds. Just because there is no consensus nationally doesn't mean there's not a consensus in the Sox organization.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 12:29 AM) This is absolutely classic. You SIU boys had to have loved this. I lost it when he politely says "bless you" after someone sneezes right in the middle of his rant. http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2013/decemb...r-the-ages.html Ha awesome. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 10:17 PM) Always go after the best player available, particularly when drafting high. If we're drafting for current ML team needs, we're doing it wrong. Yup. It's baseball, never ever draft for need.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 09:31 PM) Frankly, unless something becomes available at a relatively decent price, and given the circumstances of the current team, I have no problem going to Spring Training with Flowers, Phegley, Nieto, and Gimenez battling it out for two spots. I ultimately believe Phegley and Nieto will win out. Gimenez is on a minor league deal, so no big deal. Flowers has to clear waivers but, as I understand, cannot refuse an assignment to the minors due to his lack of service time. He will murder AAA pitching for a while. I'd rather have Josh starting but feel as if Flowers is better equipped to be a back up, if that makes sense.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 08:15 PM) This is true, and I'm not trying to say it isn't, I was just responding to a previous poster who brought that up. Ya it wasn't really directed towards you though it was in response to your post.

Ya Lillard is kind of decent.

Cause you can do that kind of stuff with all pitchers.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 07:46 PM) Quite a post. Agreed with most, but a few things just out there. One thing is for certain, the excitement level of sox fans has gone up 10 fold since a mere 5 months ago. At least us on this board. Unfortunately, i don't think what Rick has done does anything for attendance or excitement around the team from the casual fans unless they start winning right away.

Sox trade Addison Reed to Diamondbacks for 3b Matt Davidson
Rowand44 replied to dayan024's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 06:52 PM) There's nothing left for Davidson to prove in AAA and he already played 30 games in MLB and looked rather competent. As for Dunn, you keep him unless you come across a trade that costs you in little money and/or brings in real talent. He serves an important role on this team, which is being a useful hitter that hits left-handed and can keep those three righties from being slayed by RHP late in the game. While we're not going to blow our wad trying to win in 2014, you don't actively make the team worse for no particular reason. I agree with all of this. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 07:05 PM) Just curious since I am out here and have to listen to people worshiping the team. What do you all think of Kansas? Do you think the team is a serious national title contender or a total pretender? Are you high on them or low? As with Kentucky I'll let you know in a few months. I want to say that they are legit national title contenders because of the insane talent they have but as of right now they aren't a very good basketball team. -

Sox trade Addison Reed to Diamondbacks for 3b Matt Davidson
Rowand44 replied to dayan024's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 06:09 PM) Been thinking a lot about this trade for two days now, and I don't think I would have made it. Reed is a very good closer, only going to get better. His ERA got too high because of 2-3 really bad outings. He took the ball and saved 40 games for a lousy team. The kid has guts and big time experience. I would have kept him. Dbacks got a good deal, IMO. There's always gotta be one. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) Very good point by the drunk guy. Well I'm not drunk now.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 02:23 PM) Whoa those are really low starting salaries. Even my roommate who is just a lab tech at a large pharma company (and is hourly) makes around $40k before overtime. Entry level in IT is like $55k+ at most large companies in the Chicago area. IT has to be one of the higher paying starting fields. My buddy made 65k right out of school at Boeing while no one else that I know came close to that.
