  1. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 6, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) PitchFX is a wonderful thing. Brooks Baseball has a nice tool. Awesome. I appreciate it.
  2. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 6, 2010 -> 04:23 PM) Thornton Average: 95.62 Max 96.5 Putz Average: 92.19 Max: 93.1 Buehrle Average: 85.78 Max: 87.1 Good stuff. Where do you find stats like that at?
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 6, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) If we play like we did yesterday every day, I wouldn't get too worked up about this. This could be a huge difference maker in our season. We're not going to blow every team out and our 5 hitter is going to have a lot of opportunities to drive in runs, and Mark Kotsay just isn't a run producer, or an even decent hitter at this point.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2010 -> 02:29 PM) Like it or not, there's logic to breaking up the RH hitters. Beckham, Quentin, Konerko, Rios all in a row, followed by Jones/Kotsay, AJ, Teahen, and Ramirez...if you don't break them up, you're setting yourself up to be hurt in the 8th and 9th innings by LOOGY and ROOGY people. That's not just for the heart of the order too...yes, Quentin and others have splits that say they hit RHP fine...but there's always going to be an occasional RHP, say a side-armer or sommething like that, which you can pull out of a hat to frustrate those guys, and if you don't break them up you're giving away innings. And there's going to be right handed pitchers that bother Kotsay as well, so that point is kind of moot. He needs to be batting lower in the order and there's just no doubt about it. Having him hit behind your 3 best hitters especially when 2 of them are going to get on base a ton is just one hell of a terrible idea. Just imagine being down a few runs in the 6th or 7th inning, 2 on and 2 out, the opposing team brings in a tough lefty and Ozzie has to decide on keeping Mr. .500 ops vs. left handers in or losing the dh. Two pretty terrible options and something tells me that's going to happen a decent amount this season.
  5. QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 10:03 PM) No way Butler should be #1, there are several relatively comparable teams that bring in more talent than they do next year. Heck, you can make an argument that three Big Ten teams should be ahead of them: Michigan State with a healthy Lucas and Allen as well as adding Appling and Payne, Purdue if Hummel is healthy, and OSU with Turner gone but the rest likely back as well as a damn good class coming in. No way OSU should be ranked higher than Butler to start the season, Michigan State and Purdue you can definitely make an argument for and I'd actually probably have those 2 big 10 teams as 1-2 to start the season(Purdue being number 1) with the Bulldogs at number 3. Obviously that's contingent on Hayward not going pro.
  6. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 09:42 PM) When is a title game ever not played that hard on both ends of the court? Because I guarantee it wouldn't have looked like Butler was playing that hard if they were facing UNC from last year and getting run off the floor. They wouldn't have got run off the court. Would they have lost? Definitely. Would they have gotten destroyed? Definitely not. Game probably would have been very similar to the Butler-Florida game in 07. The talent level in this game certainly isn't as high as it's been in years past but that was one of the best defensive games I've ever seen. There weren't many open shots, there weren't any open lanes whatsoever the whole game and that was one of the more physical championship games you'll ever see. Add that to the fact that Butler did just a tremendous job of hanging onto the basketball, and that was a very good basketball game despite the Bulldogs shooting a bad percentage.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 10:41 PM) Maybe on the offensive end... the execution on the defensive end was great by both teams. it was nice to see a title game played this hard on both ends of the floor. I'm completely with you on this one. The defense and physicality was fantastic in this game and quite enjoyable to watch. Don't really care that there weren't a lot of points scored because there really weren't many good shots to be had, I personally thought that was one hell of a game.
  8. God damn it, so f***in close.
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 05:12 PM) Wow, what a great game. Other than our DH in the 5th spot doing what we thought he would, it was nearly a perfect start to the season. The best part is that Jake f***ing Peavy is starting our next game. I'm liking this squad...Go Sox! It really is a great feeling. Pitch a shut out on opening day and be able to come back with Jake Peavy.
  10. QUOTE (qwerty @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 04:14 PM) As i said in the chat, 9 pitches for 9 strikes to retire the side has only happened 45 times in history. Well Hawk certainly thought Matt accomplished that today.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) i want to also talk about how much fun it was to watch thornton those first 8 pitches. ^^^ I absolutely love to watch Matt pitch.
  12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcBkWZ26lfc Mark Buehrle, you are awesome.
  13. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 03:37 PM) Negatives: Juan Pierre & Mark Kotsay Positives: Gordon, Rios, Quentin, Konerko, Buehrle, AJ, AJ's Beard, Putz, Thornton. This will be a good year. I'm not a huge fan of Pierre but imo he'll at least be adequate but Kotsay batting 5th is a joke. That's enough b****ing out of me though for today, great start to the season.

QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 09:14 PM) I have yet to have good pizza in Chicago. I feel like you just punched me in the stomach.
  16. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 11:37 PM) Jermaine Dye hates Sabermetrics more than any human being on earth. It's why he's still unemployed. He's still unemployed because he's stubborn as all hell. I obviously understand the point you're making though. Like with everything there's some great things and some bad things that come from sabermetrics imo. I've never been the biggest stat guy in the world and probably never will be but I've certainly come around to a few things that I would have just openly dismissed a few years back. I would never base my opinion on a player entirely on stats but if any thing I know that some metrics have opened my eyes on some things that I should take notice of around the game. The first example that comes to my mind is Franklin Gutierrez. I always knew he was a good of but when you look at his unreal UZR it makes you pay more attention to him when you get to see him in person to see "ok, lets see if this guy is really as good as this metric says," and in Gutierrez's case, he definitely is. That being said, there's also been plenty of times when I've seen players don't match up anywhere near where a certain metric measures them at. Basically, if you dismiss all stats or the eye test, you're making a big mistake either way because they're both pretty damn important.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 08:23 PM) Word. I loved the guy until he lied to the fans and the organization, both about himself, and what had gone on. Its one thing to want more money, it is another to be a total lowlife about it. ^This. I never had a problem with him leaving the organization for more money, I had a problem with the way he left.

  19. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 08:45 PM) Yep, Butler already beat Syracuse, KSU, and Michigan State. I can't see Duke scaring them. I don't know how Butler will handle Zoubek, but maybe a miracle will happen for a Butler 3 point shooter going off like McNamara. That's the one thing that's been bothering me, how is Butler going to keep Zoubek off the offensive glass? If they can manage to do that semi well, I think they'll win this game.
  20. QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 07:31 PM) Bet a buddy $20 that Duke rolls. Gave him Butler and 7 points. I feel very confident. No chance. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 08:13 PM) Well it set up pretty nice for them, they only had to play MSU without their best player in the final four, by far the worst team left in the field. Butler had the hardest road of anyone to get to the final four.
  21. Rockies Cardinals Phillies Braves-WC Mariners White Sox Yankees Red Sox-WC Red Sox over Phillies. Yuck.
  22. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 02:21 AM) I agree with your thought process, although I don't think Butler is quite as big an underdog as some people think. This is a team that just about everybody had pegged as a legitimate national title contender next year if Gordon Hayward came back (although that's very iffy now). They are just a year early more than anything. They were the one preseason final four team I got correct. That's one more correct than I got on my actual bracket this year.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 04:32 PM) Every year? Yup.
  24. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 09:46 PM) His last decent season was 2005. His last great one was 2003. His greatness on defense didn't last all that long. Which despite stats I'll call bulls*** on. He's not great anymore but he was one of the best defensive cf's I've ever seen for a long time and that lasted passed 2003.
