  1. Here's another reason for optimism-- The Indians(SHHHHHH!) may be showing signs that they are cooling off. Look at these averages in Sept.: Broussard-- .239 Blake-- .204 Boone-- .192 Hafner-- .200 Hernandez-- .192 Peralta-- .232 Crisp, Martinez and Sizemore are still on hot streaks or at least hitting well, so they are the keys to keeping Cleveland off the scoreboard. Also, check out the batting averages of Indian players vs. Sox pitching: Broussard-- .171 Belliard-- .195 Blake-- .143 Boone-- .222 Hafner-- .238 Hernandez-- .125 Peralta-- .194 Martinez hitting .227 at US Cellular. Reasons for optimism, coming from a fan who's braced for a fight for the wildcard spot.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 01:34 PM) I think the opening day thread had way over 100 posts before the game started. Yes, but how many of them were yours?
  3. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Sep 16, 2005 -> 04:02 PM) 2.5 simply because I said CLE will pass us up on Wednesday. Yah, I did too, then realized the math didn't jibe. I change my prediction to Thursday for the passing of the torch
  4. They need to start playing like they know they're the better team. All these mental mistakes, and pitches being thrown right over the middle of the plate smack of a team playing scared. And I can't point to any individual player that has the swagger that the rest of the team can feed off, ala Curt Schilling or Roger Clemens or Derek Jeter
  5. To answer the question, I think the lead will be 3.5 games come Monday.
  6. They will overtake the Sox after the Sox-Cleveland series next week. Sox will lose 2 of 3 to the Twins, then will get swept by the Indians. It will be just like last year, when the Sox manhandled the Twins early in the season, then when it came to crunchtime, they wilted like a flower(losing 7? straight in Sept.). Cleveland will win all remaining games with the Sox.
  7. These playoff tickets I got will make for some mighty fine toilet paper.
  8. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Sep 15, 2005 -> 03:12 PM) I don't think the Sox are going to let this one get away, I really don't. They're hitting the ball too well. Seriously, I think they're going to put up a crooked number in the 8th. They sure better.......
  9. I got game 1, and so did some friends of mine. We struck out on game 2 though, so if anyone wants to trade some game 2 seats for game one seats-- let me know
  10. See, now, if George Sr. would have recognized the need for a bathroom break, we wouldn't have had that unpleasantness in Japan years ago
  11. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) This is rediculous, if you don't want to say it, then don't. If you want to say someone else, then say someone else. Don't take it away from the people that want to say it. Not a bad idea, but I think there's some logistical problems with that somehow. Not sure how exactly though lol.
  12. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 04:34 PM) I do because at the same time they are filling up kids with a bunch of revisionist history which teaches them to hate America and preaching "tolerance" for anything and everything EXCEPT for the Judeao Christian values this country was founded on. Newdow, and anyone who agrees with him can go straight to hell. This WAS a civil discussion on both sides until this interjection. First off, we get it, you're the "I say whatever's on my mind and I don't care what anyone thinks" cowboy. Good for you. Consider your reputation cemented. That being said, I don't know this Newdow guy well enough to say I agree with everything he says, but I do agree with him on this point. I don't think much of your assessment that I should then go to hell, because you're essentially telling me to go to fantasy island, or neverland, or atlantis. I guess I'm a member of the "left" and I certainly don't hate America, and I don't have any problem with many of the Judeo-Christian values this country was founded on, although the values the country was founded on also included slave ownership, would you like to bring that back too? Your broadbrush ranting is boring. And your response to this thread is ridiculous and ignorant. It smacks of extremism. You should go back to Iraq, they like extremism there.
  13. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 04:31 PM) Great the Rev. Douche Newdow is back at it again. He first tried to use his kid, then he tried to use someone elses kid. This guy needs a new hobby. Maybe he can tackle the e plurbius enum as the next act because not everyone speaks latin. The Rev. Douche I thought that guy was an atheist? What the hell is the Universal Life Church?
  14. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 03:26 PM) As a youngster I recited The Pledge of Allegence everyday in Grammer School, Junior High and my first year in High School. I'd say 99.999% of kids don't even pay attention to what the words mean, they just recite it every morning when they come into school. Hell I did it my entire childhood and it hasn't enfluenced me or anyone I know in the least. You know, that's a good point. I said it every day in catholic grammar school and catholic high school, and I'm as atheist as it gets.
  15. Harmful? No, of course not. But, as we all know, kids are very impressionable, and many things they learn at a young age are things that will stick with them for life. Wouldn't it be better to afford them a "blank page" to work with as they get older, as opposed to any pre-installed bias? Not including the words "under god" doesn't mean god or religion are wrong, just that they don't have a place in public schools. It would be like if they added "Go Bears" at the end of the pledge in Chicago. It's not wrong to support the Bears, but that type of thing doesn't belong in a patriotic affirmation in this country I don't think that that is the effect it would have at all. You're not telling kids there is no god, or to not believe in god, you're simply allowing all Americans to believe in the words they speak in support of the USA. If you want to instill a strong religious background in your kids, isn't there better places to do that anyhow? There are those people(myself included) that would point to the creation of religion as the greatest evidence of the statement you make here. Not saying this to flame you, just pointing out a different perspective.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 02:50 PM) While it wasn't put in specifically by Ike...he did sign the bill into law. It happened because of a mixture of the anti-communist movements of the early 50's and an associated religious revival (motivated in part by the desire to be unlike those "Godless" communists). This Piece at least gives some of the backstory. Good article, thanks for posting the link.
  17. Well, if I had kids going to PUBLIC school, I wouldn't want them to recite any pledge including a mention of god either. IIRC, the pledge didn't even include the words "under god" until Eisenhower had them put in. Or something like that......
  18. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 12:33 PM) Iguchi are relatively slumping Iguchi has been terrible lately, and I don't think anyone who strikes out every 4 at-bats should be in a run-producing spot in the lineup. Bat him #1 or #2, or move him down some.

    BIG NEWS

QUOTE(3E8 @ Sep 14, 2005 -> 09:40 AM) Hitting Alt+S submits your post for you. If you would have said you just saved alot of money on car insurance by switching to Geico, I would have had to hunt you down and kill you.
  20. 1) Sirotka 2) Baldwin 3) Parque 4) Eldred
  21. I want Freddy in game one, Buehrle in game 2. But, let's get to the playoffs first.......
  22. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 9, 2005 -> 01:46 PM) Again you are personalizing the post & bating me into an argument on a personal level. It's up to a mod to stop it. In the past I would follow up with harsh rhetoric ripping you & your assertions to pieces at a personal level. I'm not going to do that any more. What is or is not representative of mainstream Christianity is not going to be found in the the small sample of Christian members here at SOXTALK. It's going to be found in credible sources of information on the subject. Since this is a sports messageboard first & foremost those sources are best found outside the SOXTALK community. There is no attack, and I'm not bating you into anything, maybe you should re-read some of southsider2k5's posts directed at you recently. As far as "ripping you & your assertions to pieces at a personal level. I'm not going to do that any more." you can keep deluding yourself, but veering off-topic, ignoring valid points and disregarding requests to back up opinions you post as fact with any kind of proof is hardly ripping anything apart other than your own credibility.
  23. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 9, 2005 -> 12:27 PM) Your post appears as bating, offensive & a personal attack & since I choose to follow the guidelines of the forum I will not resort to making generalizations of yourself. The 7 major groups of Catholics: * ULTRATRADITIONALIST : orthodox - resistant to Vatican changes * TRADITIONALIST : backbone - critical of liberalism & modernism in the Church * CHARISMATIC / EVANGELICAL : born-again - scripture > Vatican. * POPULAR FOLK (1) : Latin American - worshipping of saints & Mary. Paganistic flavor. * CULTURAL : Family Catholics - social connection > spiritual connection. * LIBERAL : modernists - human reasoning (material machines) > Bible & Vatican * POSTMODERNIST : moral-relativists - no objective truths These classifications apply to other Christian groups as well. In terms of size within the Catholic population: * ULTRATRADITIONALIST : * TRADITIONALIST : > 25% & * CHARISMATIC / EVANGELICAL : * POPULAR FOLK (1) : 25% * CULTURAL : > 70% * LIBERAL : * POSTMODERNIST : There is cross-over which is why it doesn't add up to 100%. It's pretty obvious what groups best represent most Christian members (who actually write religious oriented posts) of this forum. You can see that in their posts. The mainstream Christians (the top 5) do not hope their birth control fails. That's not only illogical but a distortion of what I wrote earlier. What I stated was that they view conception in the midst of birth control as a miraculous event & blessing of God. It's a well known fact that natural methods are the most commonly used form of birth control in the top 4 & the pill when you include the top 5. There is no attack, just a simple observation which I will re-state. You continue to speak as being representative of "Mainstream Christians" and since not one fellow Christian seems to agree with you, I am hard-pressed to believe anything you post that claims to be what "they" want or "they" believe. I personally don't think you have the slightest clue what mainstream Christians think or believe. I also made no distrotion of your post-- but if you can find anyone else on this board to honestly agree with you, I'll take it back.
