http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/media/video.j...10&c_id=bos thats a vid of colon...you can never trust radar guns but he's hitting 95 in there...still has some of that 2 seam action he always had before as well...even if hes throwin 92, with solid movement like that he can still be effective if healthy

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 08:21 PM) Looks like our pitching staff is complete. Starters (5) Buerhle Danks Floyd Colon Marquez Bullpen(7) Jenks Linebrink Dotel (kids from the yankmees) Thornton Richard Poreda wouldnt shock me to see the sox keep Poreda as a starter in AAA if Richard takes over in the pen...also i think carassco will probably get a spot as well in place of the kids from the yankees...also Russell may be in the mix

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 08:17 PM) I know what you're saying but this is why awards voting bothers me. For the rest of his life Bartolo Colon will be referred to as a "former cy young award winner" but he in no way deserved to win that award in 2005. It's like Joe Crede being referred to as an all star or silver slugger award winner, it's just not fair to the players who actually earned the title with their play on the field. yeah but the year colon went 10-4 in both leagues he had a legit shot at the cy young had he spent the entire year in either league, so it bothers me less with colon than it does with others, but you are right awards mean jack FWIW, and its probably worth very little, Colon was 3-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 9 starts at AAA pawtucket last year in addition to his 7 starts in the bigs

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 08:30 PM) "A" young arm, I have no problem with. My worry is that right now we're requiring 2 young arms. We have 3 potential candidates (Marquez, Richard, Poreda) but frankly, at the end of last year it looked like all 3 could use some time either in the bullpen (Richard) or in AAA to start the next year. We might get lucky and have someone like JVB or Broadway suddenly step up in ST also, but this was insurance we needed to do. Even if all Colon gives us is a couple poor months, that's a couple poor months while the kids get extra work in. agreed...on all accounts the difference between Danks and Floyd last year and Marquez and Richard this year is frankly, Danks and Floyd were considered way better prospects, and were much closer to being major league ready. Add in the fact that having young pitchers blossom like Danks and Floyd did is the exception rather than the rule, and we need as much help at the back end of the rotation as we can get... what is the best we can hope for with colon? best situation IMO is 20-25 starts and a 4.25 ERA

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 08:11 PM) I though the whole idea was that we wanted to get younger? i have to believe its a one year contract, andi think the sox know they cant have both Richard and Marquez in the rotation at the same time...I'd feel quite a bit better about this team if we also signed freddy too....given the fact that a.) the fifth spot will be Richard/Marquez/poreda/broadway and that b.) Colon will be the 4, we still could use another guy

QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 08:07 PM) http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9079312...lon-to-rotation sounds good....though frankly Colon is exactly the type of person who could fail the physical, so lets wait and see
-
not sure what they will sign bartolo for...but i like these types of moves alot...it gives alot of insurances at the back end of the rotation...he actually threw the ball decently well for the Bosox last year when he was healthy....you figure that if you sign both, that between colon, garcia and contreras (half way through) , you should get solid contributions at some point...then if Marquez or Richard or Poreda etc is ready to step in, its easy to demote one of them if they struggle...the Bosox have used this formula the last couple years and it has worked....also i imagine they won't get anything higher than the 1 year 5 mil deals the bosox gave penny and smoltz, which makes it a pretty low risk, potentially decent reward deal

i know that they lost to VMI in the opener, but UK is pretty good with meeks and patterson giving a pretty darn good outside/inside combo -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 06:03 PM) The movie's not for everyone. Something tells me the guy that doesn't get around to seeing The Dark Knight until a month after it was released on DVD probably wasn't very hyped to see it. If it's not your cup o' tea, no matter how good it is you'll have a problem with it. this is probably partially true, but I also hardly ever go to the movies...honestly the last movie i went to was probably 2 years ago (knocked up maybe? i think so, can't remember)...so its not like I was against seeing this movie or anything In response to Knight, I understand the experience of seeing a movie in a theater can enhance the effect, but a good movie should be good in theater, on my 50 inch plasma with Blue Ray (as I watched it, not a bad alternative to a theater) or on my old 20" college TV. Either way, I'm not slamming the movie by any means. It was worth seeing and I'd certainly recommend it to all of my friends, but I don't think any part of the movie screamed Oscar like so many people told me when it came out. Ledger was good, but its not like he was Dinero in Godfather 2.

just finally saw this movie a few days ago...entertaining and pretty good, but wow was it overrated by alot of people

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) Yeah, Ryan couldn't hit a lick The question then becomes why wasn't Ryan and Henderson unanimous selections? It isn't about who is better than Ruth, Mays, or anyone else. It is about does this person belong in the HoF or not. A dozen or more writers asked themselves that and decided that no, Henderson does not belong in the HoF. Crazy. i heard one writer defend not putting rickey in that somewhat makes sense...but in the end his logic falls apart he said he believed rickey would be a HOFer, and he thought he is a HOFer and normally would have voted for him. However, they only get so many votes (5 maybe?). And he used his 5 votes on guys who he really thought should be in, but either might be borderline, or would be in danger of falling off the ballot. So he felt his vote would be better utilized voting for someone else, when he knew Rickey would get 98ish % anyways. That said, I can understand where he comes from, but what if everyone did that, and Rickey didn't get in? I still clearly think everyone should vote for guys like Henderson, I can at least somewhat understand that reasoning. I don't buy the "Ty Cobb only got 80 %, so theres no way someone should be unanimous" arguement. Thats basically saying people before us made mistakes, so we are going to continue to make the same ones...so dumb

HOF candidacy are always difficult for me to judge. I am younger (mid 20s) so the majority of guys in the hall, I never saw their entire careers, so the only precedent I have to rely on is their numbers. There are a number of questions that I don't have/know the answers to that would help in deciding if a guy should be in the hall. What percentage of players should make the hall? Is it 10? 5? I really have no idea. Should only numbers be considered? Or is there a different element voters need to consider? Should leadoff hitters be considered separately from sluggers, just as 2b are considered separately from OFers, and Closers are now separately considered from Starters? Certianly I believe numbers need to be Era corrected, but just because one guy is in the hall, does that mean a player with comparable numbers (after correcting for Era) should be enshrined? To me, not necessarily. The HOFer could have been an unworthy candidate. Certainly there are members in the Hall who probably didn't deserve it. Should the Hall be Tiered? That is, should there be a pyramid type shape of sub levels in the Hall. Guys like Ruth, Mays, Aaron, etc at the top. Seems like a good idea, but it also seems to de-emphasize players like Rice who would end up in the bottom tier. But at the same time, weren't those guys in a different type level? To what extent does statistical analysis's role play? I know alot of stats say Raines was a HOF, but in any one year was he a top 5 player in the league? MVP voting says no, but is that biased in favor of sluggers? For me at the age of 24, I know a sure fire HOF when I see one. Guys like Maddux, Arod, Pujols. I don't even need to look at their stats, because I know in my head they have stats worthy. But guys who are in that gray area, its really difficult for me to judge. I think as I get older and see more players who go in, I will be able to establish more of a precedent in my head, that would help to determine who is and isn't worthy.

Dungy is a great man and was certainly a good coach. However, people in the national media (and lovie smith) are claiming he is one of the best coaches of all time, which I have a tough time buying into. While he was a defensive coach in TB (where he was an above average coach, but nothing else...only division champs 1 time) his defenses with the Colts were almost always subpar. He had a record under .500 in the playoffs, and quite frankly was just blessed to have arguably the best QB of all time on his team. I know he won the one superbowl, but how many times at the end of the year have the colts been a disappointment in the playoffs? I think candidly most Indy fans would tell you that this team should have won more superbowls, hell Dungy said it himself. I'm not really trying to be harsh, I guess my point is just when you have a truly great player like Peyton Manning, (not to mention HOF WR in Harrison, and one potentially in Wayne, and a potential HOF RB in Edge) alot of coaches will win a ton of games.

Quentin suffers from having only 1 year under his belt. If Carlos Quentin of 2008 is the Carlos Quentin we'll get for 4 more years, I'll take Quentin as an individual, no doubt. I think people don't realize how truly great of a year the guy had last year. That said I doubt he's likely to hit THAT well in the future, while I believe Mauer will only get better. If I was starting a team, I would take Mauer, Morneau, Quentin, and then Dye quite a bit later. Mauer is youngest, has best OBP and plays the most difficult position. But frankly, Quentin outslugged Mauer by a TON last year, and had an obp only 17 points lower, and if Quentin has another similar year, hes in the top handful of players I'd build my team around. that also shouldn't shortchange morneau....I honestly only give the edge to Q and Mauer because they get on base a bit better, but morneau could just as easily throw up a .400 obp year also
-
willits has a .380 career obp in the majors and .400 obp in the minors....no he doesn't hit for power...but frankly if we put him on base in front of our boppers thats not bad...jerry owens is horrible and IMO is significantly worse than Willits....figgins would be ok also, but if we are getting rid of dye we better be getting a pretty decent pitcher along with (or a mid level prospect and quite a bit of salary relief)

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jan 6, 2009 -> 01:28 AM) how was that a good game by Pryor? The kid cant pass to save his life. He's got a long way to go. i thought he played poorly too...i mean, he can scramble, but hes been a much better passer this year than he showed tonight...and hes tall enough to catch a fade...even though he interfered on the TD as well as the 2pt conversion -
QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Jan 6, 2009 -> 12:17 AM) http://www.amazon.com/Chicago-White-Sox-Wo...9510&sr=8-1 is there one with every LDS and LCS game as well? I have that set, which has the clinching game of those series, but knight your post sounds like there is a set that has each game...is there, and if so, where?

im a big time big ten fan, and I have defended them for years and used all the excuses in the book...and i still think the big ten gets a worse rap than it deserves....and i know Texas had an arguement to be in the title game, and that OSU could have, and maybe should have won...but im sick of this s***...im sick of defending this crap....I sound like sour grapes, but for christ sake, Delany and alot of other people like me defend this conference and try to quiet the critics. But you know what will quiet them the most? Not f***ing going 1-6 in bowl games. Winning a f***ing BCS game more than once in like 4 years. Beating USC more than once every decade. I still think this conference is better than people give it credit for, but do your own damnselves a favor and prove it for once -

defensive coordinator should be fired for OSU....you have single coverage with a safety on the reciever that has burned you all night with no help over the top with 25 seconds left?? awful....then the dumbass tried playing the ball even though the reciever had the ball for like 2 seconds by the time he got there...brutal -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 5, 2009 -> 05:33 PM) This will be an interesting dynamic, as a lot of former Cubs players have claimed that Wrigley hosts some of the most racist fans in the majors (especially in the bleachers). yeah they certainly let hawkins have it, but there have been plenty of african american players that the cubs have embraced as well....this is pretty high risk, pretty high reward for the cubs IMO....and if i was a cubs fan I would like the deal.....while bradley was healthy he was arguably the best player in the AL last year...while its more money than i expected, its not a ridiculous deal...and even if it turns out to be a bad deal, the cubs are certianly a team that can absorb a bad contract for a year or two
-
nice deal for the rays IMO...he can't play the field, but the rays didnt really have a DH so it doesn't matter...the guy will get on base in the high .300s and hit 30 HR....add in the fact that the years were short, and it really looks like the market is declining

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 28, 2008 -> 08:07 PM) Bitter much? DAL is one of the most talented teams in the league, was considered a Super Bowl contender, and had control of its OWN destiny. The Bears needed help to get into the playoffs and still beat expectations anyway. Not only do I find humor in it, I think its hilarious and I'm enjoying every bit of it. I hate Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. Maybe they can trade for Chad Johnson this offseason? Maybe Rodney Harrison too. don't forget mike vick might be getting parole
