  1. QUOTE(Vance Law @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 06:16 PM) Andruw Jones hit .225 last year. You know who sucked for the first half of their rookie season? Every player ever. That is a slight exaggeration. Look at players from Torii Hunter to Aramis Ramirez to Robin Ventura to Alex Gordon who hit about .185 for the 1st 2 months of last year to the overwhelming majority of the rest of the players in baseball. They all suck ass just like they're supposed to. The difference is that some of them are supposed to eventually be great hitters. Brian is not and does not need to be- he's playing great defense at a premium defensive position. He just needs to be good. Like he has been in the minors. Like he has been in his spring trainings. Like he will be in the majors. Owens will not be a great or a good hitter. He's a one-tool player and a perfect bench guy. The other guys will sort themselves out over this year and next. Quentin will get healthy. He will torch AAA. Someone of Thome, Dye, Konerko, Swisher, Owens will get injured opening up another spot. We suddenly have an abundance of MLB ready middle infielders and outfielders playing for very cheap (Swisher, Quentin, Anderson, Owens, Richar, Ramirez, Bourgeois)that should be playing the majority of those spots next year. good point...considering the fact that over the next 5 years, Quentin or BA could put up better or similar numbers to Hunter, and Owens to Juan Pierre, we have those guys for league minimum, while out in LALA land, those two are making like 25 mil a year combined While I have completely blasted KW for failing to establish a minor league system, we suddenly do have alot of major league ready players who could be at least decent...which is at least a decent way to try to compete without a minor league system and without spending huge
  2. just about finally sobered up from my trip to nashville to see vandy vs. south carolina.... unbelievable game friday night as SC scored in the top of the 9th to go ahead, and then Ryan Flaherty (who if is available when the sox pick in the third round I would love for them to take) tied it with a bomb with two outs in the ninth and won it in the 12th or 13th with a base hit...we then exchanged back to back blowouts and won the series... I wished I had gotten to see the much anticipated Alvarez vs. Smoke matchup... when we get pedro back it should give our O a mighty boost... Smoke looked way bigger than i remember him looking. I had seen him once before and thought he had a grady sizemore type build, but this guy is much bigger, more of a younger jason giambi type body....that said id love for him to fall to us at 8...the guy is a special hitter, doesnt have the quick hands pedro does, but he seemed a bit more of a natural hitter...not as much effort in the swing...probably a bit more contact
  3. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 05:39 PM) Wassermann comes in and K's both guys he faces. Sorry, I just can't get over that MacDougal is going to get a job over Wassermann. Huge mistake IMO. while im certainly not giving up on gavin floyd, im entertaining the idea that this team may be better having both mac and wasserman in the pen with masset in the rotation over floyd...i dont hate macdougal nearly as much as most here do...you have to remember this guy was a pretty darn good pitcher for 2 years before he had some struggles last year (which is not uncommon for a middle reliever)
  4. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 05:37 PM) Joe Crede-singlehandedly killing our team stats. Danks appeared to settle down and really open up his repertoire after the 1st. i think jon danks is going to have a pretty decent major league career when its all said and done...similar to garland
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) The problem is though, given the kind of quality we have in the upper levels of our organization after this offseason's trades...how do those numbers get slanted by the fact that when we take out our regulars, we put in guys who will never make the big leagues, while other teams are putting in much better talent? And while we're at it...Joe Crede isn't helping. exactly...i would bet guys like Rouse, and even Bourgois dont get half as many ABs in other camps that they have gotten here...instead they go to guys with real upside like evan longoria, jay bruce, etc
  6. QUOTE(shipps @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 03:57 PM) Iam sorry, but all this Quentin love is exhausting. Its coming from a bunch of people that truly know very little about him.And even if you know every bit about him there is to know there is still too much love for him as if his talent is a sure bet.Stop rushing him into our lineup. The same while you guys are so quick to send any of the other guys to AAA to work on their skill sets. Please spare me. i know enough about him to make an opinion.. and this is my opinion ....carlos quentin will be the best pro among any of the recent young sox OF candidates, excluding Young. (owens, anderson, sweeney, quentin)....hes actually younger than both owens and anderson has accomplished more at the big league level than either has, and has accomplished FAR more at the minor league level than either has....Im not sure why id give jerry owens and his .360 career slugging percentage an edge over him.... .i dont think he will make the team, but i do think he will be back in AAA and hit his way into the lineup by July to get back to the main question of the thread...maybe i just dont like jerry owens very much, but I agree with what was said earlier in this thread, that Brian Anderson will actually be better offensively than Jerry Owens will, so I'm all for Anderson in CF, especially considering his D and the fact that quentin won't be healthy...Defense is actually the #1 reason to keep quentin out of hte lineup. From the scouting reports, Quentin is actually supposed to be an above average corner OFer, probably better than Swisher is. Its just such a huge dropoff in center to go from Anderson to Swisher. Its just a damn shame ozzie and KW have such a hard on for guys with moderate on base ability, no power, and who are fast, cuz Owens will probably be playing 4 out of every 5 days.
  7. jerry crasnick is a really good writer....hes as good of a writer as gammons is given credit for, but he actually you know, writes stuff...oh and he always responds to my emails, which is a plus
  8. if shields, garza and kazmir are all on track the rays will no longer have pitching issues at all, im telling you this guy is gonna be an absolute stud....hes got a chance to a randy johnson type lefthander...hes got a better fastball than kazmir and more command...i saw a lot of games he and pedro alvarez played...and id take price over pedro (who could be the #1 pick this year) everyday of the week
  9. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 06:46 AM) Carlos Lee? I guess he wasn't above average in the field, but he was average enough. The ass in me kind of wants Carlos Quentin to suck balls because I don't understand the love here. A short clip of statistical averageness and there's a cream fest for him. I mean, yeah, I hope he's Babe Ruth out there... but... Statistically Josh Fields best year in the minors came in AAA as a 23 year old .305/.379/.515 with 19 HR Carlos Quentin's WORST statistical year in the minors came in AAA as a 22 year old .301/.422/.520 with 21 HR Over the course of their minor league careers Fields: .280/.360/.464 with 52 HR in 1400 ABs Quentin: .312/.427/.526 with 55 HR in 1337 ABs theres plenty to love about quentin...starting with his track record of getting on base in the minors...and plate discipline is arguably the best tool to project into the majors...the fact is there aren't many guys, superstars included, who have had a .950 OPS throughout their minor league career....does that mean he will be a good major leaguer? not necessarily, but ill bet my money on him over a guy like ryan sweeney or brian anderson everyday of the week
  10. uribe doubled over the head of mike morse....i know morse has since moved from SS and doesnt play much there (i dont think) and was caught for roids, but i cant help but think that if we held on to morse (though by no means am i saying i retract the freddy deal....just saying if we included someone else instead of morse) would he be the opening day 2b instead of uribe?
  11. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 04:58 PM) trip goes for not as Dye pops up. anyone really give a s*** about these updates? probably too busy arguing the value of crede vs. fields, re-building vs. winning now. hate to give mariotti any credit, but some sox fans are indeed whiney. lol im listening to the game, but i space out here and there and miss what happened so im checking if it counts
  12. QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 04:57 PM) Just because Crede doesn't have any GG's doesn't make it right. It doesn't really matter because he wouldn't be able to get the GG on over his World Series ring anyway. the awards arguement is a two way street....just as joe may have deserved a GG in the past, he also didn't deserve teh silver slugger
  13. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) Nothing more to add than "haha". haha he looks like tim duncan in that picture
  14. QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 04:30 PM) Well you know what they say about opinions and assholes. this year is only part of the equation...look Fields had a higher average and more HR in 100 games last year than crede has had in his career except for one year ....also, crede is gone after this year, it stinks that we wont deal with boras, but thats the way it is....josh is cheap and we have control of him for 4 more years...he is the future 3b and is ready to play, and if we can get something for crede we do it now
  15. a few points here.... 1.) fathom - you know as well as i do that KW saying crede doesnt need to be traded means nothing...it could be simply posturing to get other teams interested (in fact, ditto the fact that the organization is saying uribe will be the starting 2b). that said i think the sox are ready for fields to play everyday, and they wont send him to AAA despite what KW said at sox fest. in addition, i have no qualms holding on to crede for this year ...we probably won't get jack for him anyways... and the 2nd round compensation pick may be worth more than what we get in return 2.) Im maybe the biggest carlos quentin believer on this board, but if the guy is injured, he is injured. I like the fact that Anderson is out there fighting for a job, and i would rather have him out there than owens. Its my hope that ozzie would play him in center and swisher in left, but this spring its been the other way around, but im pretty sure thats just to get swish reps in center (which im all for). The way I look at it right now, this has become a different race than it was at the beginning of spring. I think Owens probably makes the team for sure (hopefully as a back up, and i just dont see the sox sending him to AAA simply because i think ozzie will want a true leadoff hitter at least somewhere on the roster) and i think Quentin and Anderson are now fighting it out for the final spot with the loser going to AAA. Id be fine if either makes it, but more of me hopes Quentin wins it, but if Anderson continues to look this good for the rest of spring, and Quentin is hurt or not playing well, then im fine with BA. 3.) Crede is not going to accept a multiyear deal mid year, thats just not how boars operates, and we'd be dumb to even offer the possibility. The silver slugger he won was a joke...his average that year was a complete fluke, and his obp was still only .320 or something. Yes he was clutch and we all love him and his D, but its time to move on. 4.) For those who think crede will have more value at the trade deadline, I think you are wrong. When Mackowiak and Iguchi were traded, we got A ball relievers in return, because they were FA at the end of the year. Crede may be a slightly more valuable player, but he won't get much more in return at the trade deadline unless hes playing everyday and hitting HR at a rate like he did in 06 (unlikely) 5.) as for 2b, im sick of seeing uribe, so i want Alexei or even Richar there, but Richar has to be healthy and prove he can be better than uribe (which he really hasnt done yet). I think 2b will be a revolving door all year with uribe probably getting alot of time late in games taking over for fields and giving him days off, as well as O cab days off, and pablo probably playing alot too. I dont think the Organization is ready to give Ramirez the everyday job, but if he keeps playing like this he may earn it
  16. QUOTE(kjshoe04 @ Mar 10, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) I'm in. me too
  17. danks has looked real good this spring
  18. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Mar 7, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) If the Sox do move Konerko, which they won't, they would put Swisher at 1B and have an Owens/Quentin/Dye outfield. And I honestly don't think you are going to get more at the trade deadline for a rent-a-player in the Boras camp. we got scraps for non boras guys mackowiak and iguchi, so i agree we wont get anything good for crede at the deadline either, and i dont think we will get much more than that for him now
  19. willits with a leadoff double and a 2 out hit by kendrick drives him in off of broadway...
  20. looks like garland got swisher ramirez and konerko 1-2-3 in the first
  21. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 7, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) f***...the audio on gameday is only LA. the score is covering the other game today against the dbacks
  22. masset starting...stone announcing..sounds decent...better than singleton already lol while i do like stone...he talks an awful lot...sometimes too much 1-2-3 for masset...2 gound outs and a flyout...
  23. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 6, 2008 -> 09:11 PM) Yeah, I'll bet that you got beef with all of your co-workers. You strike me as that type. thats an awesome sig
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 10:24 PM) 42 pts, game winning 3 for Mr. Foster! yeah he hit his last 9 threes, 9 for 9 in the second half and OT....just ridic.. i know you know fathom, but its sad that more people across the country dont know about this guy...hes 6-6 with long arms and an unbelievably high release that must make it as if he his 6-9 shooting it from the arc...he was huge against UT and now this...people better start learning his name
  25. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 07:46 PM) Mock Draft: http://www.mymlbdraft.com/MLB-Mock-Draft-2008 Has us taking RHP Aaron Crow. He's a 6-2, 195lb pitcher from Missouri. Scouting report: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/colle...008/265573.html More on him: http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewAmateurPlayer...3&draftId=6 He's also touched 99mph apparently in his last start. If they go with a pitcher, he seems like he would be a good guy to start off with. jim callis said he thinks crow is the most likely guy to go #1 overall
