  1. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 09:22 PM) Rangers have to be salivating with the reported interest of the Dodgers, Braves, and Angels for Mark Teixeira. Braves are rumored to be offering Salty, Elvis Andrus, and a pitcher like Kyle Davies Dodgers are rumored to be offering Loney, Andre Ethier, and a pitching prospect(Kershaw? doubt it) Angels have apparently upped their offer that was originally Casey Kotchman, and OF Terry Evans http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...a.aeab0031.html wow id do anyone of those deals in a heartbeat if im texas not to mention isn't Teixeira a FA after this year? Imagine what we could probably get for konerko or thome....its too bad thome cant play 1b cuz id heavily consider that deal from atlanta for thome
  2. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 06:13 PM) Andy Gonzalez sucks. Why is he still on this team? He better head down when Grindy comes back. And I thought Hall was concussed last nite? what drives me up a wall is that he never takes ABs away from the one guy he should...uribe
  3. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 04:08 PM) Fields splits: June: .218 .274 .333 SLG 32k 6bb 78AB July: .275 .348 .513 SLG 22k 9bb 80AB I see a trend. And its decreasing k's slightly increasing walks, and obviously more contact. and while i remain skeptical about owens improved month of july, i think in the case of fields that it was just a matter of settling in and adjusting to big league play, and i really believe its a sign that he will be a .270-.280 hitter with 20-25 HR as early as next year and really his BB rate isnt terrible, roughly one every 10 ABs....something that for a rookie will probably get even better
  4. wow i saw this thread jumped to 9 pages and i assumed there must have been some big news on it in the last 2 hours or so, so i read the whole thing only to find 9 worthless pages of arguing
  5. QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 02:14 PM) Jerry Owens upside is Juan Pierre. If that does it for you then great. To me the only way that he starts is if: 1. He can play an adequate CF. 2. He has an OBP of atleast .370. 3. He steals atleast 50 bases with an 85 % success rate. Otherwise, it's not worth the bat you lose if he has to play LF. He has NO power so he MUST get on base a lot. He is showing himself to be a pretty good base stealer already so if he can get even better and hit .300 while drawing walks and takes care of Center ...well ....then you have Pierre but cheaper. If not, he's a 4th OF er. i think his upside is juan pierre right now, not juan pierre of 2003....i also dont think hell be quite the base stealer pierre was/is
  6. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 12:56 PM) I'd guess it was because he was pitching a lousy game? yeah i guess he allowed 8 base runners, his pitch count was probably pretty high, but i just thought 4 innings and 3 runs wasnt terrible, and usually when a guy has been as good as he has been, he has a little room to work out of things
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 03:12 PM) Another way to ask this. Ozzie is going to have his limited power small guy at the top of the order next year no matter what. Assume this statement is correct, and then answer this question: who would you like that to be? 1. Scott Podsednik 2. Darrin Erstad 3. Jerry Owens i personally think the organization needs to take a serious look at ryan sweeney as a leadoff hitter.....no hes not a burner, but if sweeney can hit .275 with a .350 obp 12 HR and 15 SBs id be thrilled with that...that said he wont hit that in his first year probably, but in reality sweeney will never be a power hitter, and i think he could be a very effective top of the order guy, especially if he can continue to reach base more...
  8. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 11:07 AM) I'm just going to ignore the BP circle jerk because it's obvious a lot of you will just start being negative the instant a publication starts viewing our prospects poorly. For the ceiling of Gio, I find it kind of pointless. Very rarely are minor leaguers pegged as #1 starters, and even more rare is when they pan out to be #1 starters. Why is this? Simple: because many pitchers who are currently aces go through a learning process and adjust at the major league level, not the minor league level. This is why you have an army of AAAA guys who can't get a major league hitter out with regularity if their lives depended on it. Of course it is important to have good stuff, which Gio has, but it's more important to know how to pitch, change speeds, and most importantly adapt to what teams are doing to you. Thus, it's a f***ing crapshoot to say player A is going to be a #1 and player B a #4. Player A could be dumb as rocks and will keep throwing his curveball with no control until he flames out of the league while player B understands how to picth. This is why I think Egbert is our best pitching prospect: because every scouting report I read says he flat out knows how to pitch with four pitches. Yes it would be nice if the threw 95+, but if you can mix four pitches and locate them well, specifically down in the zone, odds are you're going to have more success than the pitcher who just knows how to throw hard. good post....how many guys really are considered #1 starters? Hughes bailey, maybe gallardo, lincecum...theres nothing wrong with having the ceiling of a #3 starter....jon garland is a number 3, so is javy vazquez...i think wed all be thrilled if gio turns out to be a guy like that....is he gonna be a santana, peavy, type? i think we all knew the answer to that was no even before BP came out with anything...i for one would be very happy if gio becomes a guy who we can count on to give us 13-15 wins a year, which is fairly typical for a #3 on a good team...
  9. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 02:33 AM) I would pay money to hear that. If I can get it for free, why I'll probably make love to my TV if he gets called up, we have to have keith jackson guest announce for an inning he pitches on another note...any reason egbert only went 4?
  10. QUOTE(southsida86 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 10:12 AM) As of right now, Floyd is a blowhard. However, 120 innings is not enough to make an assessment to banish a pitcher to AAAA status no matter how pissed we were last night. Floyd needs to throw his 93-94 mph 4 seamer more and get a little more giddy-up on the 2 seamer. On the 4 seamer, if he throws it more it will probably creep back to topping out at 96. I wonder if he is just learning the 2 seamer, because his velocity on it is so inconsistent. at times it was 86-88, other times it was 90-92, and if he is just learning it, then why did he rely on it so much last night against the best hitting team. He HAS to throw the curveball for strikes. I'd probably describe it as a 12-6 nightmare. If Floyd can find the control on his curve, and get consistent velocity on the 2 seamer, then he has a shot, and watch out AL. i was actually impressed with the fact that floyd seemed to be able to add and subtract on his fastball....the problem is he basically became a one pitch pitcher after he plunked sheff with the curve...he was tentative to throw it ....but later on in the 4th he started gaining control of it and threw a beauty to strike sheff out and to back door one of their lefties, can't recall who... that said he threw a few hangers too that got hit very hard...he also needs to find some rhythm on the mound...stuff wise i actually thought he is very similar to vazquez, with a lesser changeup, similar slider, and slightly better curve when he can command it....one thing i would be worried about is that his delivery looks so awkward and unnatural that it seems like its something that is not easily repeatable, leaving him susceptible to frequent problems with mechanics
  11. i actually think cintron is a good candidate for a guy who could be traded....if there are any teams that are looking for a guy who can play SS, 2b and 3b and switch hit...not to mention he was a pretty accomlished pinch hitter in the NL before he got here...just in like a geoff blum type deal, a contender who is just looking for depth late in the game...i mean it would obviously be a minor deal probably for a PTBNL, but it wouldnt surprise me at all if a team like the cubs wanted him...they just called up cedeno but hes their only real SS since theriot is really a 2b

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 07:10 PM) Danks will be the #5 starter. KW has an obsession with a top of the line starting 5.. i can see KW go after a veteran starter via free agency. I know many are expecting either Garland or Vaz to be traded but dont i see that happening. im not so sure about free agency....i mean whats gonna be out there that will sign in chicago for KWs three years? maybe a guy like paul byrd, but that would only be a stop gap...i think its more likely a guy like haeger, floyd, gio or someone traded for dye/contreras or something would be a much more realistic option
  13. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 06:29 PM) Give em hell Gavin. Please. Would make trading Jose a lot easier. just before game time....what would you guys be happy with out of floyd tonight? considering that tigers attack is a top 3 offense in the game, maybe the best, i kind of pencil in the "over under" at 5 IP 4 ER. Id be content with that start, anything better and im happy with his outing, anything worse and id be....maybe not disappointed cuz i dont expect him to do well, but disheartened...
  14. seeing fields out there on D really makes me appreciate how good crede was. It got to the point where i took his D for granted, and he really was an excellent defensive third baseman. that said fields isn't terrible, but i notice a significant drop off, but i think fields is and will be much better offensively

QUOTE(briguy27 @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 06:03 PM) I agree with both, but if we want to trade Jon now, I wish we would have last offseason so we could have got Bucholz, Tavarez, and Pence, the NL's leading hitter, from Houston. i believe the deal was gonna be hirsh buccholz and tavarez (the same that they got for jennings) but it didnt go through because the sox insisted on pence instead of tavares, and the astros backed out
  16. in addition its also extremely rare that a guy throws lefty, but bats righty.....it happens often that a guy will throw righty and bat lefty, but the reverse is very rare.....randy johnson is one and i think someone on the astros like jason lane or someone
  17. owens has 67 ABs in July.....20 Singles, no doubles, no triples, no homers, 5 walks 7 stolen bases and 3 caught stealing... so 25 times he has reached base 1st base this month in 72 PA. subtract the three CS and its 22, add 7 as the SBs essentially convert singles to doubles and its basically 29 bases produced in 72 plate appearances, still a pretty crappy ratio That SB % is exactly the break even point established by sabremetricians with thousands of seasons of data backing that claim up....He hasnt had an extra base hit since his second game on june 2. he is slugging .299 in his "hot" july so my feelings are his .350 obp in 72 PAs is simply too small of a sample size to jump to the conclusion that he will be effective in the future, especially he when adds literally 0 power.....and i tend to look at the .328 obp and .344 slg in a full season of AAA ball, as a stronger indication that jerry owens' future in the big leaguers will be subpar

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 04:20 PM) You've also become waaaay too biased to even comment about Floyd at this point, or so it appears. There were several people who still liked Floyd at the time of the trade, most notably John Sickels. I know it's the "cool" thing to still rip Kenny about that trade -- hell, just look at the thread of the trade, just about everyone wanted Kenny's head on a platter after the deal -- but for anyone to even bring up Floyd's name in a negative light is simply ridiculous. pratt has been the most outspoken against one player on this board ive seen in a while ....hes entitled to his opinion, and i respect that he doenst think gavin floyd will ever be good. Quite frankly though, throw floyd out of that deal and just get gio and i still think its a decent trade for the white sox.....freddy was an expensive pitcher with 1 year left on his contract, decreased velo on his fastball, a body that got bigger and bigger following a report that he had been smoking pot in venezuela and we got a guy who is right now was ranked as the 24th best prospect in baseball according to baseballamericas top 25 midseason update...ahead of guys like ellsbury, barton, brignac, laroche, morales......not a terrible return for guy who had been as healthy as scott podsednik this year and cost 10 mil

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) It is lucky that a guy who can throw 100 and close out games becomes available on waivers. Freddy was easy to move. He won 17 games last season even though danger signs were all around. Ozzie said he would win 20 in 2007 after they traded him. Maybe he shouldn't be helping with personnel decisions. If you don't think AJ fell into KW's lap and KW did go on record as saying he would not be a White Sox, and if you don't think its lucky that Oakland gave Pittsburgh something the Pirates wanted more than what KW was offering and if you don't think its lucky Matsui's tank with the Mets kept Iguchi affordable, Iand if you don't think its lucky the Yankees outbid KW for Wright, which would have ended any of Iguchi and AJ being White Sox, keep drinking the KW kool aid. I won't take the championship away from him, he deserves credit for that. But I don't believe it should stop anyone from criticizing his blunders of which there are plenty. Everyone has them. Sorry, I won't judge the McCarthy trade until a few years from now. It certainly didn't help the 2007 White Sox much and I don't see where it is a deal that couldn't be turned down. Masset blows, and Danks may or may not be as good as McCarthy when its all said and done. there is a fine line between lucky and opportunistic....was it lucky that jenks was on waivers? sure...but that means alot of other GMs could have had him before kenny, so you have to give him credit for being the one to get him....is it lucky that the market for Japanese middle infielders was crap after matsui? yeah, but KW was the only GM to take that risk....Pierzynski was basically out of a job and nobody else wanted to take a shot at him....was that luck, or was KW smart to take the chance on him? did he get lucky with hermanson? sure, but you have to give him credit for providing insurance on shingo Dont forget Kenny was able to acquire pods + vizcaino + 8 Million (el duque 4 mil + AJ 2 + tadahito 2) for carlos lee....thats 5 pieces for 1 (which is the type "one player for many pieces" deal that the 08 sox desperately need)...so you have to give him credit for that was KW lucky? Sure. Unless you can spend like the yankees you have to get a little, maybe alot lucky to win a W.S. but the fact of that matter is that you also have to take those risks, and many of them will work, many wont. In a year like 2005 many of them worked out for kenny. in 07, very few of them did. you win some you lose some....the years when you have all those risks work in your favor are the years you win 110 ball games.
  20. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 04:09 PM) duh looking for more substance dont think anymore is needed....you stick with your team...thick and thin...wins and losses...i dont care about poorly they are doing i still root for them to win every day, because my day is a little bit better when they win....
  21. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 04:08 PM) Its obvious they suck, why are u still paying attentio? because im a fan of the team
  22. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 11:26 PM) Adrian Beltre anyone? gary matthews...
  23. QUOTE(AirScott @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 10:16 AM) Pods was 27 when he won the NL Rookie of the Year, 29 when he helped us to a World Series. im not saying it can't happen, but when pods won the rookie of the year he was considered a guy who had been around for a while
  24. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2007 -> 03:02 PM) I'll tell you why quite simply. After hitting a nice looking .331 in AA 2 years ago, Owens was promoted to AAA last year, and hit a whopping .260, with a .328 OBP. He had improved on that this year, to the tune of .284/.361, but for a singles hitter who's only real weapon is speed, that .280/.360 or so is pretty close to the bottom level of performance we'd need from him. In other words, for him to be a starting OF, he needs to be better in the big leagues than he was in AAA for 1.5 seasons, or at the least, exactly the same. He can not really have his average go downwards, or his SO's go up, or his walks go down, or his SB %age go down, or he rapidly falls into the 4th OF category. That all said, he also does have room for improvements that could really, really help. He's not a very good bunter yet it appears, and that'd make a huge difference for a guy like him if he could grab a few bunt singles per year and get the defense even more out of whack. And his SB %age went from 65% back in 05 to 76-79% in the last 1.5 years in AAA, so he's showing improvement with his running. And his K/BB and BB/AB numbers in 06 in AAA were pretty close to where Podsednik has been for the Sox, and they've improved during the last couple years, so it does look like he actually is learning. He just needs to get the whole slap hitting thing down. If he can do that, he's a starter on our team for 6 years. If he can't, then he's a pinch runner/Willie Harris. all that plus hes already 26, which makes him pretty old for a prospect
  25. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 18, 2007 -> 02:39 PM) Vick's a total scumbag. I wish someone would put him in a cage and make him get his ass kicked. Hopefully that will happen in prison(but it wont). yeah seriously i hope this guy gets kicked outa the league...he and his brother are both low life pieces of s*** that are a disgrace to all humans
