QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 04:05 PM) Maybe the Frank injury isn't as major as it seems, but that the Gload callup was due to Dye's bug bite. They could be just coincedences. no, mroe likely he would be coming to fill franks spot. i cant imagine a bug bite lasting longer than a day or so. IF gload is even coming up, its probably for thomas. either way, that aint good news. hopefully the hurt will be back soon, if he even did get injured

QUOTE(Cubs Suck23 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) I was bit by a black widow spider and was in the hospital for 6 days. Hopefully Dye comes back tomorrow we need him for this huge series yikes

QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 02:09 PM) I wouldn't make the move if they wanted Marte. i dont think florida is asking for marte, and quite frankly i dont think marte will be included if florida insists on including lowell in the deal

QUOTE(Tadahito Iguchi @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 12:31 PM) It's only for Insider subscribers, so if someone has insider please dont paste the whole article. But, can you tell me what this means? ( Is plan B the White Sox, Red Sox, OR Blue Jays?) its already posted in one of the other threads....says just something like the O's might pass because of money in lowells contract in which case another team could become the favorite. talks about how boston had a 3 team deal in place to get him with minnesota...mays romero to bos for mueller, mays arroyo for lowell/burnett. but supposedly that didnt happen, either. the espn insider thing FYI is awful, at least the rumor mill is. just go to prosportsdaily.com. all the rumor mill is is a compilation of whats written in newspapers, which is what prosportsdaily.com gives for free.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 10:52 AM) Sick of a decent team in 1st place, why exactly? i can only speculate but i know that alot of the players on the nationals dislike frank robinson and dont like to play for him. thats the only thing i can think of.

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 11:39 AM) He's given up 4 runs or less in 16 of his 19 starts. He's given up 3 runs or less in 12 of his 19 starts. He has gone to the 7th inning in 14 of his 19 starts. Would have been 15 but he got hurt in the game he was dominating against KC. Inconsistent? Not so much. He has as many "bad" (More than 4 runs) outings as Burly and Garland at 3. Going into his game the other night he was 20th in the league in ERA. So in other words, maybe you should look at the numbers before you make ridiculous, and incredibly wrong, statements like this: "That said, its not surprise that he's inconsistent and he's been a little better than even his biggest supporters might have guessed." wow, one of the best contreras related posts ive read. those numbers are interesting. what people tend to forget is that in teh beginning of the year, this guy was damn solid. thru may he had kept the team in just about every game. and in fact, of the top of my head, the only games he didnt keep the team in were vs. baltimore, arizona, detroit, and maybe texas. hes not dominating consistently, but ill take 6-7 innings with 3-4 runs from my #4 with a few excellent outings and a few poor ones. 20th in the league in ERA means that there are only 15 other non white sox pitchers in teh AL with a better ERA than him. translation he would be a #2 on alot of teams

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:57 AM) Did we even offer him two years in the off season?? yeah supposedly he chose the giants over chisox because he got the third year he wanted in SF, and we were only giving him 2

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:57 AM) I agree, but what we as fans forget is this is a business. And as a business they still want to maximize their investment. Hence why they want to get 5-6 innings from Conteras which should come out to about 120-130 pitches haha true, but the way i feel is that the investment is already made, and the best way to maximize the investment isn't in terms of number of pitches, but rather in terms of # of Wins, in which case if teh team is best suited with someone else starting for cheaper, and contreras in the pen, then so be it. i do understand at the same time that the team might want to deal contreras's 6 mil. if he is simply gonna be long relief, cuz in reality, we can have adkins do a slightly worse job for 1/10th the dinero. so i can understand wanting to trade him, instead of putting him in that role.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:55 AM) Would he be worth going after? It would make things complicated on D. But that bat of his can turn our offense around in a hurry. He can easily be a 30-30 guy for years to come if we can sign him long-term. I can see Texas interested in a deal Centered around BMAC. Things to consider : Where would we put Soriano on D ? Can we move tadahito or soriano to SS? I know Tadahito does not have the same arm he once had. He is in his contract year. Boston fans seem to think they can get him for Emree and Bellhorn!! doubtful, unless maybe he can sstill play SS, but thats unlikely. i still think houston is the best fit for him, especially now that tehy are in the race.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 11:55 PM) How cool is it that the Sox have people talking about their pitching and defense, something that's been soooo sorely lacking for so long. We had to give up something to get something. i know alot of people on here don't like him, but i personally think hes a pretty decent writer and calls it like it is. he uses new age stats, but also doesnt look at em like the bible like some cougghrobneyercough.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:13 AM) We are not going to use Mr. 6 million on the whitesox dime pitcher for a 1 inning relief role. He may go to long relief, but he wont be a stopper. They figure that they can use Marte, Politte and the Beast Jenks. Jenks has the stuff, we will find out if he has what you need between the ears. I have been impressed so far in what I have seen as far as maturity from Bobby. Plus he is throwing a hell of a hot harder than I remember seeing him throw down in Tuscon. i dont like the arguement that a players role should be determined by how much money they are paying him. it doesnt matter fi he makes 6 mil., he will make 6 mil if he starts, closes, hits, hands out gatorade in the dugout. put him where he gives you the best chance to win (im not necessarily sayin thats the bullpen btw), and dont let the players money dictate his role on teh team, let his capabilities.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:06 AM) Throw Todd Jones in there and maybe... hes a decent option, but i dont think hes THAT much of an upgrade, especially not to trade a lot for. like you said if they include him in the burnett deal i wouldnt have a problem with it. i think alex gonzlaez is pretty underrated.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 07:59 AM) Loooooooots of speculating here. First of all, 50-50 chance we even get Burnett. Secondly, let's be careful in what we expect from him if we do land him. He'd certainly help, but he's just the best of what's available right now. Let's keep it in perspective. if we get burnett contreras is gone almost for sure. i believe thats who florida wants most in that deal, which would be nice becuase that would free up some money needed to pay burnett long term, granted, we will prolly have to pay some of contreras's contract, but not all of it, which will help

Despite being in first, White Sox just cannot win

QUOTE(Spiff @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 07:49 AM) Ryan and Shaughnessy never say anything bad about their teams? First of all, both teams are WORLD CHAMPIONS so it's not easy to find bad things to say. But that's beside the point because apparently you are forgetting that Shaughnessy wrote an entire book on why the Red Sox had not, and would not, win the World Series. And Ryan, the day after the Patriots had won their third Super Bowl in four years, wrote a front-page article on why the team shouldn't be called a dynasty. You really don't know what you're talking about. shaugnessys book is more a campaign for the rest of the world to feel bad for them. boo hoo im not gonna shed a tear cuz his team hasnt won. besides yes, they are both world champs, but they werent for a long time, and all you ever heard from them was how they deserve it and how they are due. ill give you ryans article about the dynasty, but that guy is just flat ignorant anyways. edit: the entire new england sports scene drives me nuts. they all act like their teams are americas team and s*** simply cuz they are rivals of the yankees, the "evil empire" (which oddly enough was deemed after teh yanks acquired none other than jose contreras). but what nobody knows is that the red sox rented out the entire hotel where contreras was staying during his workouts, so the yankees couldnt get close to him. god i just hate those sports fans with a passion -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 06:48 AM) How about the White Sox use Contreras as a closer? I don't know how long it would take him to warm up and such, but if he's focused and attacking hitters he would be hard to touch in one inning stints. a few months before the white sox traded loaiza for contreras they actually called the yankees asking about contreras with the intention of him becoming a closer. iirc his 1st inning stats last year were actually quite good, but i could be wrong on that. the sox felt he had the stuff, and i agree. maybe hes better suited as a 1 inning pitcher. generally teams are more agressive in the later innings and might swing and miss more at his splitter. if the sox do get another starter (assuming contreras isnt dealt) i wouldnt mind seein him in middle relief, but right now we have enough guys who can close, so middle relief sure, closer no.

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 06:06 AM) jesus h. f***ing christ can we give it a goddamn rest already on this attendance bulls***. f***. is the the only story to write? piss-poor f***ing journalism again. that whole f***in newspaper is a joke. they get so much national pub, between bob ryan and dan shaugnessy. im not sure about the guy who wrote that article, but ryan and shaugnessy are as big of a joke to journalism as jay mariotti. they are clueless and unlike mariotti, they can't say a damn thing bad about any of their teams. they spend their whole time trying to emulate bob nightengale and they simply suck. ryan tries to be controversial, and is just a dope. he called my schools basketball team "too white to win in the tourney" and we f***in made it to the sweet 16 losing to eventual champs Uconn, and we ended up playing them as close as anyone in the entire tourney. the globe is a huge reason why red sox and pats fans have a gigantic chip on their shoulder. i hate cub fans more than anything else, but red sox fans are becoming a close second -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 07:37 PM) Hence why I've said he's a perfect option for us to trade for. Has great splits as well. he is a terrific option. KW has been after him before as well. unfortunately in a sellers market he will command alot in return, but thats how it will be for just about everybody. lets not forget he has playoff experience with arizona in 2001, and if i remember correctly, he did very well, 2 hits in 7 innings the LCS. chemistry is also not an issue with him, as i believe a few years ago he was voted "the best guy in baseball"

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 01:45 PM) I just read over my Sports Weekly and it states that "The White Sox are willing to give up pitching prospect Brandon McCarthy in a trade for the Marlins' A.J. Burnett, but they won't surrender him in a deal for Giants starter Jason Schmidt. The White Sox will move Triple-A outfielder Brian Anderson for Jason Schmidt." "The Giants, according to several general managers, plan to move Schimdt by July 31." "The Mariners are expected to trade outfielder Randy Winn and reliever Ron Villone, but they likely will keep closer Eddie Guardado and outfielder Raul Ibanez." "Closer Billy Wagner wants out if the Phillies drop out of the race." "The Tigers are taking offers for pitcher Jason Johnson and outfielder Rondell White." "The Dodgers are taking offers for left-hander Odalis Perez, who's in the first year of a three-year, $24million deal." good info there southsideirish....ive said it before and i will again id prefer schmidt over burnett, but either is a positive. i mean we are talkin about a guy who would go to NYY, BOS or BAL and be their #2 or #1 in teh case of baltimore coming to the southside and being the 3rd or fourth starter in teh playoffs. wow. thats good. Billy wagner i dont think will get traded, unless philly drops way out. i saw his comments, but the thing is philly is in it, and if they moved him they would want enough major league help to win now. wagner would be huge, but thats not probable. at first i believed KW when he said he wasnt gonna make any major moves at the deadline, but the more i think about it, the more that statement is insane. yes its a sellers market, but last year we were dead even with the twins and KW was talkin about goin deep in the playoffs. how can he not do it this year. he feels he has an obligation to us to go for it and go for it big. while i havent been a big backer of villone, our bullpen has played over their heads this year (politte, cotts, hermie all career years) and jenks is still a ? so a guy like villone or batista would add great depth. KW will do something significant, mark my words. it just makes too little sense for him not to

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 10:49 AM) Mr. Jeckle2000. What you've just said....is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything that could even be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. How can you possibly make that kind of statement? It has never been speculated that he was on steroids by anyone. I have never heard his name brought up in any conversation about steroids. Why would you accuse someone without any type of proof whatsoever? Shouldn't you at least have some type of evidence before you start making such ugly accusations as those? Just being on the same team or on the same coast as Balco and Bonds, McGwire, Canseco, Giambi, Santiago... doesn't mean he did anything. I don't think there is any doubt that Sosa did them, but does that mean that we should accuse every Dominican player because they come from the same country? Your points are childish and ridiculous. i choose business ethics

QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) Yeah... the fact that he was only mediocore before joining the same team with Bonds and Balco is just a coincidence right... After an already long major league career he suddenly just found all this talent... Yeah right keep dreaming.... Ohh and also Benito Santiago, Marvin Benard... think of all the players the Giants had in the same time frame that have used... sorry but I perfer to live in the real world... I will once again say the same thing I said from day one... I would love to get Jason Schmidt on this team if the price is right... BUT NO WAY IN HELL IS HE WORTH MORE THEN A MID LEVEL PROSPECT, MAYBE A HIGH PROSPECT!, but you sure don't weaken your starting staff to get him... He is insurance for El Duque, so we trade Jose for him and that leaves us what if El Duque gets hurt... I mean think about it... I would even be ok with a BMAC for Schmidt deal, but no way on earth would I weaken our major league team to get him... your last two posts have set yourself up to get torn to pieces on this board....being a dickhead about trying to prove your poitn doesnt help either. you say you just live in the real world, yet your info says live "in my own head..."....uh.....anybody see some contradiction and irony there?

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:13 AM) Someone on another forum suggested Konerko for Griffey straight up. Dye moves to 1B and Griffey starts in RF. The Sox could then cut Timo and bring up Gload to back up Dye at 1B. Probably will never happen, but I like it. a few points... first.) konerko was acquired from the reds for cameron, who then traded to seattle for griffey...trading griffey for konerko would just bring that thing full circle..or something like that 2.) WHY? this trade isnt that well thought out. you are decreasing the defense shuffling dye to 1b. you are taking a power hitter with 22 homers for a power hitter with 21 homers. you are also subjecting yourself to a guy who is injury prone making a ton of money. at this point id rather have PK than griffey, because htey supply the same offensive production, and konekro has less of an injury risk for less money

QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:08 AM) Just so everybody is aware, Schmidt last night: ND 7 IP 7 H 3 ER 2 BB 10 K Game was in San Fran. Is his consistency starting to come back? I heard the Mike and Mike report too, but what i heard a few days ago, i believe it was gammons (i know not everyone thinks hes reliable) but he said the giants have been shopping schmidt for about a month. if you ask me, they are trying to drive up the price by sayin he isnt available. IMO the giants are nuts to not move him. they are better off trading him for prospects now ,and then using the 10 million dollars they save in free agency next year. this is the real trade KW should be lookin at. it will cost less than burnett in terms of prospects/ml players, youll get a guaranteed year of schmidt next year, whereas burnett could be a rental, and i personally feel that he is a better pitcher and if he gets even close to being 03-04 schmidt, he can dominate a playoff series better than burnett can. to me this deal is a way better option than burnett, who will prolly go to the Os anyways
