QUOTE(thomsonmi @ May 27, 2005 -> 03:35 PM) While Kenny is checking out Frank this weekend in Charlotte, I hope Brian Anderson catches his eye. Given how badly Dye and Everett are hitting it may be time to see what this kid can do. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...milb&pid=435042 I know his strike out totals are high but he can't do any worse than half of our current lineup. And, maybe the trip to Coors is just the time to bring him in. Dye's and Everett's power would help us more in Coors than Brian Anderson. in due time.

QUOTE(TheDybber @ May 25, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) no. I'd rather be good for years than win one series. oh i bet braves fans feel the same way

I guess we're off the whole Polanco thing, so...outside of the Foulke-Koch trade, Williams hasn't made too many bad moves, and that's the only move he made which I immediately knew he made a mistake. I'm thinking when he finalized the deal with Billy Beane, hung up the phone, and said to himself, "Good God, what have I done?" (this being my 90th post at Soxtalk, I think in at least 50 of those I mention the Foulke-Koch trade...maybe someday I'll get over it, but that doesn't seem like it'll be anytime soon)

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 24, 2005 -> 10:43 AM) I thought Polanco talk was done-for after the off-season. Remember how many people were in love with this guy before the aquisition of Iguchi? Gimme Polanco anyday over MVP and let's get his ass some starts giving the trio of Crede-Uribe-Iguchi some much needed days off. The Phils are really looking for a way to get Utley some more at-bats and that may have lowered the asking price for Polanco in and of itself. Bring him in Kenny! exactly what I'm thinking. Polanco can play 2B, SS, and 3B, so he'll get enough at-bats, keeping Uribe, Iguchi, and Crede fresh at all times, and is better than Ozuna and Willie. plus if his price is down, which it should be, this move makes even more sense.

wait to see if his numbers even out, and then how much money he wants. maybe he's a really slow starter, or maybe it's just 2 bad starts. on a related note, am I the only one that noticed the shameless plug by the Tribune writer? maybe the fact that the Sox get no love from Chicagoans and the Cubs do is because of the obvious media bias (the newspaper owns the Cubs).
-
QUOTE(retro1983hat @ May 23, 2005 -> 08:20 AM) If the Sox get to the playoffs or (please) World Series, wait until he sees the media coverage and second-guessing there. He needs to chill and just say he made a mistake. it's not a mistake. trust is earned, and though B-Mac has earned a call-up with his pitching in spring training and in the minors (an injury to El Duque didn't hurt either), when you can go to fresh arms that have pitched in the major leagues to close out a game, you do it until McCarthy has proven himself a little more in the majors. anyway, that wouldn't be like Ozzie, now would it?

Red's Closer Released..Do the Sox pick him up?
AirScott replied to Cubs Suck23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 23, 2005 -> 04:42 PM) Any word as to why he was released? he made an "obscene gesture" at a fan...he's been struggling lately and getting s*** about it from fans and the media. QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 23, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) I hope to hell not. His fastball is down to 86 - 87 mph. He's basically Shingo without the frisbee. And that's why his ERA is 7.36. not quite. he had 40-somethin saves last year on the Reds, and that's an achievement itself. I heard during spring training that his velocity is down, and that he'd get shelled. that report was right, maybe it's temporary or maybe it's not, but I wouldn't mind either way, if the Sox pick him up or not. -
QUOTE(Soxbadger @ May 23, 2005 -> 04:07 PM) Hilarious comparison? I think the only dolt in the thread is you. Generally players have a right to the basepath, so if they make contact in that fashion it is legal. A-Rod went beyond this, and tried to purposefully make the ball fall out of the players mit. Compare to Uribe: Players generally can fake out a player. But it is far different to tell a player, "Hey that was foul". You know most people think the opponent has honor, and if they are saying its foul its because that is the way they would want to be treated. He tricked Lee, and that is bush league. Half the people in this thread would of been crying if it had gone against the Sox, ie Perez told Uribe it was a foul ball and Uribe stopped running. Maybe no one has class anymore, who knows. SB it is a pretty bad comparison, as A-Rod swatted at Bronson Arroyo's glove and knocked the ball loose. Uribe just held up his hands and might have said something. it's not the most moral (for lack of a better word) thing to do, and if it had happened to the Sox, I'd be mad at the baserunner over anyone else, for not looking at the 3rd base coach and trusting the other team's player (then again, sometimes Joey Cora can betray that trust) EDIT: and how do we know that Uribe didn't know it was fair? his reaction in the dugout didn't say anything, one of those "hey, it worked, I'll take it" reactions.

I'd say just see how Hermanson does in the closer role, because Urbina and Mesa haven't been traded because the Tigers and Pirates want way to much (according to some GMs), so imagine what the Phillies and Astros would want for an actual top-notch closer.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ May 22, 2005 -> 07:11 PM) I feel your pain, thats why I'm in favor of a baseball floor at least. There doesn't have to be a baseball cap, but it would be nice, just a baseball floor at the minimum. Maybe something like 40 million. I'm a White Sox fan, and at the moment I'm glad the Royals are in our division, and you're right, there should definitely be a floor. why should Steinbrenner pay more in luxury tax than the Royals and Devil Rays pay their entire roster?

a simple qualification for ace: lots of innings, somebody who can win regularly with minimal help from the bullpen. Buehrle is an ace, even though he doesn't strike out a lot of hitters, because he can go deep into ballgames. he doesn't have the stuff, but he still gets guys out.

here's maybe the biggest compliment they'll receive all year: "They play hard. They're not very good, but they play hard." - John Kruk something needs to be done with these owners that refuse to spend money. if you don't have the desire for your team to win, why buy a baseball team? at least give them a chance, throw the fans a bone every few years. in the case of the Royals, "rebuilding" is just some bulls*** that they hide behind, because a good place to start rebuilding (or even prevent having to) is to keep a 28 year old 5-tool centerfielder. sorry, but I just need to vent, because the way I see it, is to get fans in the seats you need to make some effort to put a quality team on the field, or else fans just won't show up. but then I'm disproven by the good people of Miami, whose Florida Marlins can't crack the top 20 in MLB attendance, even the year after a World Series victory.

QUOTE(YASNY @ May 19, 2005 -> 01:34 AM) What a great time for Dye and Konerko to break out of their slumps. I'm still concerned about Paulie because he's still pulling everything. Dye has been hitting the ball hard for two games. He may finally be ready to add some offense to this team. you got that right. as far as pitching match-ups are concerned, this is the worst it could be. neither Buehrle nor Garland pitches, and the Cubs send out their 3 best. I expect the Cubs to take 2 of 3, but their bullpen is so bad and our bats have been so clutch that this series is nearly impossible to predict (for me, at least. anybody wants to take a shot at it then go ahead)
-
QUOTE(greg775 @ May 17, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) I'd pass on Sweeney because of his back woes. I think it's time to give up on Dye, however. Bring up Anderson and let Dye go. Paulie just needs to suck it up and start hitting. The team is probably just patiently waiting for frank to return to have murderer's row of Everett, Dye, Frank and Pauilie. p.s. Interesting that Jeremy Reed hasn't done much this year. He gets hits and scores runs once in a while but nothing remarkable yet. And Olivo has been horrible. you're right about Sweeney's back, the risk there is too big for the reward because Konerko can and should put up close to Sweeney's numbers. I wouldn't say let Dye go, but maybe bring up Anderson to give him a little push, if he doesn't turn it around soon (it sounded like he was hitting it well tonight, just right at people, I didn't see it but I heard it on the radio)
-
while we're at it, let's swing a trade for every player off to a hot start. get Konerko out of there, let's get Tino Martinez at first. Johnny Damon's batting .365, how about Rowand for Damon? or Jermaine Dye for Chipper Jones? (green means sarcastic, right?)
-
when we get an extra day off, it might not be a bad idea to move garland up a start, just because him and Contreras haven't been able to go as long. otherwise, it won't be an issue until September and October, when play-off rotations (hopefully) will be being set.
-
try to get him to chase 1-2, then mix it up after that. maybe go after him, or go out of the zone again, depending of what kind of hitter it is, how youve pitched earlier, etc.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ May 16, 2005 -> 12:44 PM) There there.. Only in the minds of the weak would you still not see the truth that is KW.. A Failure. I'd say KW has done a damn good job with the payroll he has...except Foulke-for-Koch, which I still haven't gotten over.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 15, 2005 -> 02:28 AM) A comparison: Scott Podsednik .270 AVG .388 OBP 0 HR 10 RBI 22 SB 20 R 21 BB 11 SO Carl Crawford .272 AVG .302 OBP 3 HR 19 RBI 11 SB 22 R 7 BB 28 SO that's a shame for D-Ray fans, because it looks like Crawford's out of his element and trying to do too much batting 3rd.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ May 14, 2005 -> 09:22 PM) Garcia is starting to piss me the f*** off these days. He was out there acting like a junkballer all night and he had more hangers than a f***ing closet. He better get his s*** wired together and do it fast. Ozzie I know Garcia is f***ing one of your relatives but GETTING A WIN FOR THE TEAM IS MORE f***ING IMPORTANT THAN GETTING A WIN FOR YOUR BUDDY. YOU DUMB TRUCK!!!! What the f*** were you f***ing doing bringing him out there in the 7th?!?!?!? Where the f*** was Politte who hasn't pitched in days??!?! Why was Cocks left in there to get shelled all that time. GOD GROW A BRAIN AND GET A CLUE!!!!!!! wow. I'm a day late here, but you have a point about Ozzie. he constantly seems to leave his starters in just 1 inning too long, he did the same exact thing with Buehrle vs. Oakland. I missed the game, I was at work, but from what I've heard/seen, he should stop doing that.

Jeff Liefer is on Cleveland's AAA team, hitting .198 at the moment.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 13, 2005 -> 01:33 PM) Yea, but Soriano has the American and Latin vote. Just the way it is. Soriano will get voted in and Francona will oversee Iguchi unless Roberts slows down drastically. I don't know, anybody on the eastern hemisphere with internet access will be voting for Iguchi the max amount of times. same with Ichiro.

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ May 13, 2005 -> 11:05 PM) Just got back from the game... man it was f***ing awesome...great comeback!! Competely electric atmosphere out there....great win. I'm also disappointed that I didn't go tonight, considering the comeback and that it was free T-shirt night.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 13, 2005 -> 11:05 PM) One had a sosa cubs jersey and he had it crossed out with Duck Tape. About the 4th inning people started yelling, Sosa isnt here stupid cub fans. God are they a dumb group of people. do Cubs fans realize that Sammy Sosa brought baseball back from near obscurity after the strike with the 1998 home run chase? or 4 straight 50+ HR seasons (3 60+)? or hit 545 homeruns in a Cubs uniform? it seems Cubs fans and Yankee fans really don't know much about their ball clubs. anyhoo, what's really encouraging about this Sox team, and I've said this many a times this season, is that we've been beating the Orioles and Twins the same way we've been beating the Devil Rays and Royals.

c'mon what's with you 3 not even giving Maggs a dishonorable mention? even though the separation was somewhat ugly, he still gave us 6 damn good years.
