This is all true. They just need to decide the path. Either way this year he is essentially going to be a reliever with his innings limit whether it be in themajors or minors.
-
The problem is no one knows at this stage of his development. The only thing that is certain is that he was shut down twice last year due to injury, once in college and once in the MLB.
-
Sure and see how those teams handle their development. That is the key question here. How to take a pitcher who has never started or pitched many innings and turn him into a starter. As I've said both paths have advantages and disadvantages. My point here is that just because he is in the pen this year doesn't preclude him from starting in the future.
-
I think you are right, it's just that he is such an unknown due to never being a starter that the organization doesn't know if he can do it. They will know after this year. Ideally he does start next year but they will need to see how he handles even 70-80innings.
-
I think he is one of the few that never started in his college career and lost that chance due to the pandemic and now a fanbase has unrealistic expectation due to where he was drafted and his unique talent Can you find another pitcher drafted near the top who never started in college and is now expected to start?
-
That special talent's arm will explode if they make him a full time starter this year. The pandemic really hurt his physical development.
-
I don't see any scenario where he jumps Lawrence.
-
Agreed. Due to his not starting in college and losing the last season to the pandemic, there really is no other option physically. (i know you meant 2023.)
-
I think the current plan is to develop him as a starter and see how it goes. Having him in the pen this year to build innings doesn't preclude starting next year. He has such a limited innings base that he really can't start this year without shutting him down in July. So its either piggyback him in the minors which is really relieving or be used as a reliever.
-
It's feasible. However, I don't think the decision on whether to make him a starter or reliever has been decided. He needs to pitch a full year and stay healthy first.
-
The advantage is that he can learn how to get MLB hitters out. All the innings in the MiLB will not teach him that. He may actually use his secondary pitches less in the MiLB because he may be able to use just his fastball there. He won't be able to start much in the minors anyway due to the innings limit. Next year is when he needs to begin starting whether is be at the majors or minors.
-
Brining him up last may have been a mistake but there is nothing that can be done about that now. They need to worry about what the best plan is currently. Either path if MLB reliever or MiLB starter has advantages and disadvantages.
-
Sale threw 71 in his first full pro season. I see no reason why Crochet couldn't do that plus a little.
-
In 2022 they make him a full time starter with a moderate innings limit. Sure that conversation happens. It will be up to them to determine where he is more valuable.
-
It's possible. But he would really need to be a reliever this year due to his very limited innings count this year.
-
Except for the fact that Papelbon could start whereas Crochet cannot at least not for more than half a season.
-
This is the whole reason to do it this way. He has a very limited number of innings this year due to the lack of innings in his past. Why not use them in the MLB pen. The Papelbon comparison doesn't make sense as he was a starter in the minors. He could have started in the MLB but Boston chose not to. Crotchet could not be a starter this year for more than half a year before they shut him down.
-
Or Sale-ed or would it be Sold.
-
They signed young players to long term deals to contend for the next 5 years or so. They view their contention window longer than 2023. So why do anything to diminish that for the short term. Frequently the best team on paper doesn't win so they want to give themselves the most chances at it.

The Ball Doctor knows.
-
The laces or doctoring the ball allows for better spin rates thus better movement. Once people started focusing on spin rates it was inevitable that doctoring the ball would become more popular to artificially increase the spin rate.
