Zach Burdi headed to Birmingham
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 11:50 PM) Pretty sure it's Curt Hasler now. Champion got bumped up on the food chain. Ok. That is the guy you should criticize if you have a beef about the way the young guns are progressing.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 10:41 PM) Just seems that things are getting stale with Cooper. Rodon seems to have hit a wall. Fulmer has struggled for major stretches. Adams' velocity is down significantly, as are his strikeouts. Sometimes you outsmart everyone (see Chris Sale), but that's not necessarily an indicator of future success (turning projected relievers into starters), just as Anderson's success doesn't mean the White Sox can't ever develop position prospects despite a decades-long struggle in that area. The White Sox do take more pitching risks than other organizations. I do feel a lot of Cooper's reputation (recently) is based on Jose Quintana, and he's about as conventional/textbook as you get mechanically for a lefty. There weren't any major alterations with him from Day 1 (like they're currently going through w/ both Fulmer and Adams). Still, Jordan Stephens is another ray of hope. These almost always pop up on the pitching side, where they have great development people (who have obviously also worked with Cooper for many years, the guys like Hasler, Burns and Perdew). You do realize that Fulmer is in his first full season of pro ball and Adams is in his second year while being 20 y/o. Young pitchers do struggle. Just because they struggle does not mean you should give up on them. Also, cooper has very little to do with them at this stage. That's more for the minor league pitching coordinator, Kirk Champion I believe, and their individual pitching coaches.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 10:08 PM) There were also a number of concerns about Fulmer and Danish having the ability to make it to the big leagues as starters when they were drafted. Sale, Fulmer and Burdi...all quite obviously (of course, Tyler was a lesser draft choice). Just wonder how many times they can go against the grain or conventional scouting wisdom??? Even Rodon has lots of mechanical issues that PTAC has been on top of since the first moment he was drafted, and which have proved to be pretty prophetic (so far). Im not sure where this going against the grain comes from. Many "experts" said before the draft that Burdi would be able to help a MLB pen this year. Most teams will take a pitcher like fulmer and start him if nothing else to huild his arm up to handle an MLB pen load. The upside could be that he ends up bring a starter. Rodon was considered one if thetop arms in the draft. The sox git him lower than most "experts" thought he would go. The sox aren't doing anything different than what most teams would do. I can't believe you a going after the sox on handling pitchers. If anything they do that fairly well.

It was true for Sale as well. As a matter of fact many teams didn't want to draft him for fear of injury with the odd mechanics. Edit: this is a response to caulfield12 changing my post. I don't know how to get that to appear.

Favorite Soxtalk Beef
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 06:31 PM) Johnnies is my favorite beef, but Portillo's isn't bad, and a combo at Luke's is a treat. Best beefs ever where at the now closed Jimmy's in Arlington Heights. This is what I thought whenisaw the title.

07/05 GDT Yanks at Sox
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 07:42 PM) Cooper has gotten him away from what made him a special talent I think it's a work in progress. H was walking far too many and they are working on things. I bet he is going through a dead arm period. He is throwing like he is tired.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 06:42 PM) If all that's true, why did no other organization think to convert him into a starter? Remember all the hype over Tyler Kolek two years ago? This is a guy with a similar large frame (albeit older) throwing over 100 MPH. Why wouldn't he be a Top 10-15 pick (for other teams)? I'm sure plenty though about it. Just like many thought Sale would only be a reliever due to his odd mechanics.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 09:02 PM) Because he doesn't have all the pitches to be a starter. And while the Sox think that they could make him into a starter, I haven't seen much out of them that that's a high priority. Hahn seems intent on rushing him up. And frankly, he sort of has to to justify #26. This makes no sense. He is on the Chris Sale path to the MLB and last I checked he transitioned from the bullpen to the rotation with the sox. The transition will mostly happen in the off season.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 08:38 PM) He was 95-97/98 at different points his last time out. He was really throwing hard two starts ago. Don't get it. Could be a period of deadarm. All pitchers go through at a couple of points throughout the year.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 03:50 PM) Dan Hayes @CSNHayes 22m22 minutes ago Sounds like there will be no timeline update on Jackson until after the All-Star break. Yeah, he should be playing within about 2 weeks of the AS break.

Music and more Music
QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 05:38 PM) I waited all night for November Rain and it was the only song I was disappointed in. Piano sounded tinty, seemed like Axel forgot lines, and no Slash solo. Maybe just me. I had the exact same thought! That was the only song that was disappointing. I even liked the Pink Floyd and Who covers. I thought the piano and guitar for the instrumental Layla was really good though.

07/02 GDT Sox at Astros
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 09:04 PM) . I agree with you that the Sox need those players. I think they can get by with Shuck, at least for a while They have only 2 dependable late inning relievers. They have 2 5th starters, but only when those 2 pitch their best. A starter and late inning reliever cost a ton at the deadline. And that is if Hahn knew what he was doing. The fault though is the farm...for all the ballyhoo about how good they are with pitching, where is it? We haven't seen a pitcher out of them since Sale or Nate Jones. Can't even pull an 8th inning guy or dependable 5th starter. And the Sox have maybe 1 A prospect in the whole system (this draft excluded) so they have to load up 3 or 4 of their Bs for a good player, and they really don't have many Bs. I thought Petricka and Putnam were doing respectable work.

Top 30 International Prospects; July 2nd 2016
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 06:58 PM) Oh please. I've never said that. I never pound the table for $200 million dollar players. You're just in an overreacting mode to my posts now. No I'm not. I'm just commenting on your statement of "wanting to after the big ones" and them being too cheap. They have been spending right up to the limit the last few years and haven't been cheap which I think is the right way to go. your're right though the 1 billion was a little over the top.

How many wins will Chris Sale have this season?
QUOTE (Deadpool @ May 25, 2016 -> 10:46 AM) What does a pitching win measure well? Nothing. Human or otherwise, a pitching win is meaningless. They definitely mean less than they used to. Pitchers used to pitch to win. Now they pitch to build their stats and I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way. Pitchers would maybe give up a few runs in games with leads in an attempt to extend games and save the bullpen. They wanted the win giving up the run and stats didn't matter. More and more I see the pitchers continuing to throw stressful pitches with leads just to try to make sure they can get as many outs in as few batters as possible.

How many wins will Chris Sale have this season?
QUOTE (Tex @ May 25, 2016 -> 12:18 PM) And I'm not saying that wins is some major factor and has huge significance. I think it is one piece of information that should be fit in when evaluating a pitcher. Comparing his win total to other pitchers on his staff with their stats may reveal subjective information. How much you want to value motivation, desire, etc is up to you. But totally dismissing wins dismisses how well a player can get his team playing behind and for him. Unlike most other sports, baseball is the only sport where wins are tracked so publicly for an individual player. Football comes kind of close, but nothing like baseball. Again, it isn't a huge factor, but I believe it shouldn't be overlooked or automatically dismissed. Dang, two!

How many wins will Chris Sale have this season?
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 24, 2016 -> 03:41 PM) They still matter to me. Last I looked the teams with the most wins in the regular season advance to the postseason and the team with the most wins in the post-season wins the series. While I agree wins aren't the #1 factor, I actually find it to be an underrated stat, as I view it as being a pitcher who goes deeper into games tends to give themselves more opportunities to win games, etc (controls more of their destiny and there is value of that to an individual). That isn't to say it is the only factor but I think too easily it is ignored because someone's WAR is better. Hey, someone who agrees with me or are you just mocking me.

07/02 GDT Sox at Astros
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 06:39 PM) It was either Marisnick who is hitting .176 on the year, Rasmus who has a SSS being bad against Robertson or their back up catcher. I think Rasmus was the right move just because he was the best chance to run into one. Yeah, I guess. There really weren't many good options there. You could probably make a case for any of them. In that situation the HR has the best chance to get the run so why not.

07/02 GDT Sox at Astros
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 06:33 PM) Any ideas? As far as position players I'd like to see them add a centerfielder that can hit and a good hitting first baseman who plays good defense so Abreu can DH. Unless Morneau shows he still has something left in the tank. I'd really like them to picjk up a couple of solid relievers. Don't know if all of this is possible though. I was just going with getting the original starters (Cabrera and Jackson) back and adding Morneau.

I guess when I express an opinion on anything I like to base them on at least some direct information.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 06:26 PM) The Sox are flawed but so are the rest of the teams. You win some and you lose some. Reinforcements are on the way. Yes, they could have 3 new position players soon after the all star break.

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 06:12 PM) What's the complete picture then? I see a team that year in year makes dumb mistakes (different players) and the manager just sits there and does nothing about from what I can tell and have read. As SSF pointed out it took the president coming down to try and settle things not Robin. Sure would've been nice to see Eaton getting his ass chewed or Robin at least talking to him after his two bonehead mistakes. Just from afar that's what it appears like. Sorry for being a fan who lives far away with no connections to this team. All I can see is what's on tv and stuff I can read. It does the team no good to have the manager "chew a guy's ass" in public. I have no doubt it will be discussed after the game. If you are looking for a dugout fight, get ona guy's case when he is pissed he just screwed up and he knows it. Ventura should have let KW handle the LaRoche case. As soon as the manager takes sides in a clubhouse he loses have the clubhouse and it makes it difficult to manage the team. Everyone can hate KW, he doesn't deal with the players on a daily basis. Making judgments based on no information usually doesn't lead to the right conclusions. There are many reasons why the team can be playing the way they are. Making judgments based on absolutely no information only conjecture is fine if you want, my opinion is that it's not a good way to judge what's really going on.
