Cotts to the Cubs
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 12:09 PM) What I find troubling is that we give up on a young guy after one bad season. I guess KW thinks the league figured him out and he won't/can't return to 2005 form. I tend to disagree and believe that Cotts will really be solid out of the pen again very soon. The same could be said as to why some people value him so highly after only one good season. He has always has trouble with giving up too many BB. It 2005 he didn't. Perhaps the Sox figured that was the abberation and got what they could while they could. If KW though he could get more if he waited, I'm sure he would have. The Sox must've saw something they liked with Vazquez. Remember the AA Barons probably saw a lot of him last year.

Cotts to the Cubs
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) Don't like it at all, I think KW just sold low on Cotts. Do you mthink KW took the worst trade he could find? There were rumors Cotts was on the block and I'm going to believe that KW got the best deal he could. We may value Cotts higher but obviously GMs in MLB didn't. Now the big question is why they felt he needed to be traded. I suspect this will be the beginning of a group of deals.

If Frank signs with Jays
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:00 AM) Um, isn't the only reason why we'd actually need a new CF the hitting? As far as I could tell based on last year, the only thing we'd do defensively in CF is going to be to downgrade compared to our supposed starter. I don't think they were very many CF substantially better then BA especially the price it would be to acquire the individual who would be better defensively.

If Frank signs with Jays
We need young pitching depth back in a trade not hitting. I know this is a topic discussed in many threads but I think that is what wins and what KW will acquire.

Brian Anderson to the Marlins?
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 09:57 PM) Well, then we might as well get rid of Fields ASAP. I do have the same concern with him. That's why I wouldn't be against trading him. I'm not saying either won't be good in the majors it's just that the high K rate shows they will have big problems adjusting if they can at all. That's why I would include them in a trade if you can get pitching for them.

Brian Anderson to the Marlins?
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 09:41 PM) But Young is an OBP guy. His isolated plate discipline (OBP - AVG) is close to .100 over his minor league career. His OBP the past two seasons in the minors has been .377 and .363. So really, the only knock on Young is his K's. He's arguably as complete a player as you'll find in all of the minors (or, in recently-graduated-to-the-majors players). Possibly. I still don't trust guys who K that much in the minors to translate that succees to the majors. It's possible but I still agree with the trade that added starting pitching and the flexibility to trade one of those this year.

Frank Thomas a Blue Jay????
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2663691 Thanks, you beat me to it.

Frank Thomas a Blue Jay????
There are rumors that Frank will sign with the Blue Jays. I couldn't get used to him wearing green/gold. He'll look awful in the blue. Here's hoping he gets the 500 HR then retires. This team jumping is killing me.

Most talented Beatle?
John. Mostly for the writing. Then the voice. Paul was the better musician. George was a hell of a guitar player but didn't go too much beyond that. Ringo....well he was the elder statesman.

Brian Anderson to the Marlins?
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 07:41 PM) Really? Players who play above average defense in CF while stealing 20-30 bases and hit 20-30 HRs plus a crapload of doubles are "really nothing special"? Heh... shows what I know. There's nothing wrong with that if you like the Earl Weaver all or nothing offense. I just prefer the players with higher ave and OBP (too clog up the bases) to compliment the speed. Just a matter of preference.

Brian Anderson to the Marlins?
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 04:53 PM) Or it means that if you trade one of your best hitting prospects in decades (Young) due to having faith in another player (Anderson), you better not give up on him after one year just because your manager is an arrogant idiot. there are many levels to that statement including the manager. However, the basic premise is wrong. Young was not the best hitting prospect in decades. A low average hitter with a high strikeout rate is not the best hitting prospect in decades. Maybe a guy who won an MVP in two different leagues such as Crede would be much higher. I think Young will be more like the player most people compare him to: Mike Cameron. A very good defensive player who will steal bases and hit homeruns but relagated to support roles because of an all or nothing approach and will move around the league alot. Not a bad ballplayer but nothing really special either.

Daisuke Matsuzaka signs
QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 05:21 PM) The posting fee for Ichiro was $13 million dollars. A little different than $51.1 If you have the money who cares?

Brian Anderson to the Marlins?
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 09:30 AM) If we turn around and trade Anderson for an average prospect, that makes the Vazquez for Young trade turn from horrible to one of the worst in the franchise's history. If you are the GM you have to do what you think is the best for the team. You can't consider "what could look like the worst rade in franchise history" If you follow theat theory of only looking and worrying about how things are perceived in the past you will never be successful at anything. This doesn't mean it's not the worst trade, it just means who can't worry about it. If KW did that he would never make another move after trading for Todd Ritchie!!!

Daisuke Matsuzaka signs
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 01:59 PM) You aren't really comparing the 2 are you?? Ichiro plays 5 times as much as Matsuzaka, the bid wasn't anywhere near this egregious (and the contract wasn't nearly as crazy as this one will be), and to say that is really beyond apples and oranges. Just throwing out 50 millon dollars up front because somebody might be a stud is stupid ass business. I am comparing the two. While I agree the amount of money is ridiculous, How much is a potential top of the rotation starter worth? I don't care if Ichiro plays 5 times as much the game is still pitching. If you want to play the "how much he plays game" how many pitches is the pitcher involved in and how many pitches is a right fielder involved in? The game is pitching. I agree I wouldn't have payed that much for a team with a budget like ours but it is very tempting to get a pitcher like that for a team that the budget seems to not be a limitation.

Daisuke Matsuzaka signs
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 01:34 PM) HUGE difference between Japanese hitter and pitcher though. Japanese pitchers are notorious for the incredible amount of pitches they throw early in their career, and many of them lose their velocity sooner rather than later (compared to pitchers from USA/Dominican, etc.). I understand this. However a possible stud pitcher in his prime is also more worth the risk to obtain than any hitter. In order to reap great rewards often great risks must be taken. (unlike the Sox drafting philosophy)

Daisuke Matsuzaka signs
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 12:38 AM) I'd say that was a potential 30 million dollar waste if they did. I want no part of a Japanese player that has done NOTHING in the U.S. that I have to "bid" on just to get a shot to sign. The Ichiro bid really backfired for Seattle.

Mets looking to deal Milledge/Heilman?
QUOTE(Jimbo @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 12:55 AM) Crisp was hurt most of the year, and did his best to come back, despite the injury. Pods, as told to me by my Milwaukee friends will be a bust after year 1. seems about right. Well it's a good thing Pods didn't have off season surgery or any other groin injuries otherwise you could you the same excuses for him

Mark DeRosa
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 03:44 PM) Him and Gary Matthews are going to love Texas forever. A couple of early 30 somethings who can't hit but are really good defenders have a great year in a hitting ballpark and get way overpaid. He'll fit right in with the Cubs though, light hitter, doesn't walk much, strikes out a ton. I don't think of DeRosa as a really good defender. As a matter of fact I would say he is an average 2B and below average at the other positions he has played such as SS, 3B or the OF.

What to do with Pods
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) Wasn't he supposedly hurt in the 2nd half of 2005 as well? He had a whole off-season to get healthy, and like you said, he saw very little time in ST, and "looked hurt" all season. So why should a team trying to win it all in 2007 count on a guy that hasnt been at full health since July of 2005? I just have never really been a fan of Podsednik, and the "Podsednik Adventure" needs to come to an end. He had surgery in the off season remember. This is why he came into ST less than 100%.

Indians acquire Barfield
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:28 AM) And Choo, and Hafner, and Martinez, and Sizemore...eek. Exactly!!! The AL central is going to be tough next year. I don't think the wild card will come from our division becasue thre will be 4 teams in great competition.

What to do with Pods
QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:13 AM) The talk of any team giving up anything of value for Podsednik is a joke. Every team in the majors has a minor leaguer who can do what Pods does. Podsednik has become a zero-tool player. He can't hit for average (or get on base with any frequency). He has no power. His OF defense stinks. He has no arm. And his speed/baserunning/base stealing has gone from great to merely above average. He is a below replacement level player who is no longer particularly good at any aspect of the game. Is some team going to give up anything of value for him when the best you can say about him is that he used to be fast? I hate it when fans come up with fantastics scenarios where we can get something good in exchange for crap. Could this be due to the injuries sustained last year and he will return to the "great" level you said he was before? After all he's only about 30 and shouldn't have lost his physical speed yet. Not that I think he is a great player by any means but I'm just asking.

J.D. Drew?
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 10:48 PM) Problem here is he opted out of the remaining 33million, 3yrs left on his contract with Los Angeles. Obviously, he's seeking more years and (likely) more money over that term. Considering the teams you've listed as interested, I would be SHOCKED if Williams negotiated with Boras for J.D. Drew. I really hope this issue with Boras resolves itself someday. It's becoming annoying immediately scratching out free agents or draft picks because he's representing the player. We're continually distancing ourselves from some of the best players in the game. Sure, we drafted Joe Crede; but that was more than 5 years ago. It will never go away. Boras is great at his job in getting clubs to overvalue his players and overpaying for them. The Sox operate within a budget and will not get suckered into this. KW knows the value of his players and will compensate them fairly.

Sheffield Traded to Tigers..
QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 09:31 AM) I place almost no value in individual prospects, so get a bunch of them and hope one pans out. There is no guarantee that any of these guys will make the 25 man roster, or once there have any impact. If we are scoring who wins this trade in 2007, I'd say Detroit. Perhaps down the road, if one of these guys pans out, the trade will need to be rethought. But I don't think the Yankees lineup is better without him. These guys didn't play for the Tigers. He's an upgrade for what they had. For that, I like this trade for Detroit. Maybe not, but the team will be better without him.
