  1. QUOTE(thomsonmi @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) I agree with Rock. This was a solid move. As usual here, hardly anyone is paying attention to the $10 million this trade freed up for other moves. Like when we traded CLee for Podsednik and then used the extra money gained from the trade to sign AJ, The Duke, and Iguchi. You can't ignore the money folks. Sure they can. It allows them to b**** and moan ... as usual.
  2. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 10:44 AM) FEMA. From what I've been hearing from the MSM, they've been running FROM the state. It's gotta be someone else.
  3. New thread started on the Garland rumor. Take it there folks.
  4. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 09:54 AM) WTF is KW doing? Taveras and Bucholtz?? How the hell does this make the Sox better?? Doesn't sound good.
  5. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 09:42 AM) Wasn't Jody Davis coaching down there last year? My sister is a rabid Cubs fan, and Jody was always her favorite. If so, do we know where Davis went? Never mind, found it. Davis to coach Daytona (High A) next year. I guess Peoria is their Low A team. Another Cubs A team
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 09:31 AM) For those of us not terribly in the know... can you clarify the Rule V rule? From what I can tell, basically, any player in your minor league system not protected on the 40-man roster can be drafted by another team, with compensation returning in the form of draft picks. Is that correct? Are there other conditions we could have used to protect someone like this, if we wanted to? Eligibility: A player not on a team's Major League 40-man roster is eligible for the Rule 5 draft if: the player was 18 or younger when he first signed a pro contract and this is the fourth Rule 5 draft since he signed, OR if he was 19 or older when he first signed a pro contract and this is the third Rule 5 draft since he signed. A player drafted onto a Major League roster in the Rule 5 draft must remain in the majors (on the 25-man active roster or the DL) for all of the subsequent season, or the drafting club must attempt to return him to his original club. However, since a returned Rule 5 player must first be placed on outright waivers, a third club could claim the player off waivers. But of course, that club would then also have to keep him in the majors all season, or offer him back to his original club. Occasionally, the drafting club will work out a trade with the player's original team, allowing the drafting club to retain the player but send him to the minors. Edited to add: That may be somewhat out of date since there is a new CBA in place.
  7. QUOTE(spiderman @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 09:19 AM) On the open market, provided Buerhle has a good year, you are correct. However, given that the White Sox prefer to sign their players before then, and their pitchers, to 3 year deals of late, I don't think $12 million a year, or maybe something starting at $12 milliion would be totally ridiculous - espeically if Buerhle wanted to stay here. I said 3 years, 36 million, maybe 3 years 40 million gets done. Probably won't matter though as Williams is saying no more extensions. If he thought he could sign Buehrle for that kind of money, I'm sure he wouldn't say "no extensions". Think about it. These agents are smelling blood right now.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 08:23 AM) I don't care about what used to be better in the old days... We didn't have people with that type of attitude back in the old days.
  9. Next time someone begins to criticize how we ended the war, I hope they at least give a thought to how it started. God bless the greatest generation.
  10. Somebody in Louisiana is getting rich and I'm sure it's not the poor families. Who's running that state anyway?
  11. QUOTE(spiderman @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 08:27 AM) I'm disgusted with what I'm hearing from the White Sox - yes, they are getting back two players from the Phillies who supposedly have high upside, and the Sox believe that they can be top of the line starters, but they don't seem to be interested at all in paying their pitchers, which Williams has been quoted as saying over and over is the reason they won the WS in '05. I want to win again next season, and if they trade Buerhle, which looks like a real possibility, they won't win with Gavin Floyd/Brandon McCarthy in the rotation in a league where you may have to win 95 games. With all the revenue pouring in, they can't get Burehle locked up on a 3 year, 36 million dollar deal that would put him just below a Chris Carpetner in terms of $/year ???? I'll say this for the Cubs - I'm not sure they're spending the money they have smartly, but at least they realize that you to spend money to get free agents/improve the club/keep it together (A.Ramirez). It seems though that we have decided to take a step back in order to get more young pitching - not a bad strategy if you could guarantee the young pitching would develop, but, as we know, can't do that. On the open market, Buehrle will come in at just under Zito numbers. 3 years and $36M won't even come close. That's the market today ... which is why KW did what he did and why he may trade Mark.
  12. For comparison sake, I'm dropping this blurb in here: Of course, just because the Rocks are 'eyeing' these players doesn't mean they'll be able to bet them.
  13. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:09 AM) The Sox traded Morse, Olivo and Jeremy Reed for Garcia. They trade Rowand, Gio, and Haigwood for Thome and $$$. Then trade Garcia for Gio and Floyd. So in essence, the moves end up like this: Rowand, Haigwood, Morse, Olivo and Jeremy Reed for Thome, $$$, and Floyd. It's more like this ... Rowand, Haigwood, Morse, Olivo, Reed for Thome, Floyd, $$$ and 2.5 years of Garcia and one WS Championship.
  14. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:43 PM) I don't care about the "Clobber Line" and whether Ford's really ARE cheaper in Hempstead. I saw "Clobber Line" and immediately thought about "Clubber Lane".
  15. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 06:34 PM) Funny, because I think he'd be a HoFer if he retired right now, regardless of his position on the field. 30+ homers in 9 of 10 years from 1993 to 2002, .300+ BA in 9 straight years from 1993 to 2001, .900+ OPS in 10 straight years, along with a .309 career average, .930 career OPS, and 419 homers. By the end of his career, his average will probably be closer to .300, if not in the .290 range, with his OPS hovering right around .900, but he'll probably have 450-475 career homers too, making him a good hitter throughout his career, and one of the best for a stretch of 10 years. If that's not HoF material, then you can make arguments against many others too, including Frank Thomas. Oh yeah. Piazza's a HOF'er. No doubt.
  16. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 02:29 AM) I highly doubt it sir. Of course, so do I. But you never know about KW. I do know he has coveted Clemens for years. It could be a "thinking outside the box" type of thing.
  17. A thought just entered my mind. Is there any chance in hell that the Sox use that $10M in available payroll to take a run at Pettitte or Clemens for one year?
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 02:24 PM) Beautiful. Disgusting. Totally disgusting. Even if you don't like the man, show some respect for damn office.
  19. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 02:43 PM) I hate to be the one to say it, but if lest say 20% of baseball is or has roided (and thats a small estimate based on the stuff some of the admitted roiders have said) it be wrong to just assume the White Sox don't have any guys that did or have juiced. Frankly all I can do is hope they don't but thats it and I'm not going to not trade for a guy just because his name was linked to steroid rumors (obviously in Bonds case his name is the main name but s***, I don't care, he produces at ridiculously amazing clips when healthy). And I'm not advocating him coming to the Sox (although I'd be giddy if we did get him at 1yr 10 mill) but I am saying any team that gets him will be one of the big winners of FA. While I don't assume the Sox have been and are totally PED free, acquiring someone like Bonds seems to advocate it. That's the perception I don't want associated with the Sox.
  20. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) The deal Bonds' gets will be far-and-away the BEST signed by any of the big name OFers this winter (Drew, Lee, Soriano, Pierre, Matthews). One year for a guaranteed .420 OBP guy? You could leadoff with Brian Anderson and Juan Uribe and still score 900+ runs... Thanks, but no thanks.
  21. QUOTE(Soxy @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 12:19 PM) I've had "I want your Sex" by George Michael stuck in my head all day. AGH! Make it stop! I ..... must .... resist.

    Book Thread Part 2

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 12:29 PM) I just started the new Bill Bryson book. The Jimmy Carter book was a quick read, and surprisingly good. Funny how much smarter Presidents get after they leave office. Eh ... That's debatable.
