QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 14, 2006 -> 12:36 PM) This board is probably 98% male, so this is a good study group. How often do you tell your wife or GF that you love her? I don't mean, "yeah, me too" as a response to when she says it first, or on a cheesy card some stranger wrote. I mean how often do you say "I love you"? Oh, I have some thoughts on this matter. Back when I was teenager (no smartass comments!) I would read in Dear Abby or Ann Landers oodles and gobs of women writing in saying "He never says ILY first" or "He never does the little things" blah, blah, blah. Well, I made a mental note of this and as I went through my marriage I ALWAYS told my wife "I love you." when either one of left for work, or the grocery, or wherever. I usually got home from work before her, and I'd meet here at the door with a kiss and "I love you." Guess what that got me? All my efforts were taken for granted and didn't mean a damn thing to her. That said, I still believe that is the way to go. I believe it is important to know you are loved and I'm not shy about telling my current lady, and, I hope, future wife that I love her. I make a point of it and will continue to do so.

QUOTE(Steff @ Feb 14, 2006 -> 12:00 PM) Oh... my sister-in-laws are throwing it... but she did ask for it. LMAO.. her PAY for her own shower.. for shame!! Ah! ... Good point!
-
One point I haven't seen mentioned, but it's possible I misunderstood what Steff said. Are not showers supposed to be thrown FOR someone, like a friend, as opposed to being thrown BY the mother to be?

From a Blog called "Big Block of Cheese" I was thinking it was Jackson, but I googled it to make sure.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 09:16 AM) Honestly. That's just ridiculous. I think its impossible to rate presidencies less than forty years old. I think we're just now finally seeing a full and honest picture of LBJ's years and JFK's years. And even though Nixon would have been impeached and probably convicted of it, it's too early to call him a bottom five president. Same with Carter - despite his screwups as well. And we may find that some of his policies may have ended up being solutions to current problems. As much credit as people gave Reagan, some of the policies he followed led to some serious problems in the 1990's and today. The same for Clinton on either side. While I won't argue that there's potential for our current President to fall on either side of the spectrum according to the side you're on, he sure as hell isn't there yet. And we won't fully know for decades. Wow. I'm flabblegasted to say that I agree with you. However, while I believe Carter was an ineffective president, I don't necessarily believe he was a bad one.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 08:47 AM) Yas, I expected the spirit of this comment from you--but not the incorrect grammar. Yeah .. I blew it there. As did Tex with "the GOPerheads around hear". s*** happens.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 10:19 AM) I have a different argument than the declared-war thing. My stance is that war powers should never extend to any action against US citizens, per my interperetation of both the Constitution and the Comitatus Act. Therefore, any spying of this sort against citizens without a warrant is not protected under war powers and is inherently wrong. That's the key word ... interpretations. If and when it comes to point that Bush and Co. are proven guilty of breaking the law, or even legally charged with it, as opposed to liberal rhetoric stating so, then I'll have a different outlook on it. Until then, it's just a bunch of politicians playing politics.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 12, 2006 -> 09:24 AM) Nobody said it was right Yas. But, it was legal at the time. FISA changed that. So tell me, since you seem to be all about moral equivalency here, which is worse - doing something wrong that's legal? or doing something wrong and breaking a law to do it? Wrong is wrong. Is that morally equivalent enough for you?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 12, 2006 -> 04:59 PM) Isn't it funny how the GOP fans immediately start talking about cheap shots. LOL. I wonder how long it will take until they blame this on Bill Clinton, announce it would have happened more often if Bush had not been President, laugh at giving the guy a Purple Heart like Kerry, and announce Chaney as a hero for saving the guy's life We know their coming.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 12, 2006 -> 10:00 PM) I do know a reporter who managed to get into NO before FEMA, then went on to see areas outside NO early on. The mess was everywhere. The only reason we saw so much about NO is the large population (and death toll) center. Response to areas in LA outside NO was horrific, and the same was said about MS in some areas. Of course first responders are there on the ground. And while you keep asking why no on understands first response, why do you not understand that this was NOT a local disaster? The resources required were regional and federal, and federal coordination was necessary for anything beyond initial incident response ( and would have been preferable for that as well). I do understand that this was not a local disaster. I also understand that the first responses should have come from the local and state levels. As I've said, the Pres has to shoulder some of the blame. But it appears he's shouldering a vast majority of it. Regarding the first paragraph, I believe I stated the local and state responses were much better in the other two states. I've never given LA any credit for anything other than a major fubar.

Okay. I can agree with that to an extent. Still, the pictures of 150 school buses sitting in 6 feet of water when they should have been put into use evacuating 'the faces of New Orleans' are basically ignored and forgotten.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 12, 2006 -> 07:31 AM) While I agree that other state and local agencies dis a much better job, comparing a suburban and rural response to the levees breaking in NO is a stretch. I wouldn't give anyone a free pass, including some residents. What we should remember, if we are looking for a positive, was and still is, the tremendous response of volunteers who came and cleaned, cooked, handed out water, searched, held hands, prayed, and anything else that was needed. Those volunteer efforts continue to this day. So we have successes and failures that we can learn from. Can we really prepare for an event that is magnitudes worse than the previous? I think it may be unfair to expect it. My point is that I'm not giving anyone a pass. But there are so many JUST pointing at Bush and not even looking at those pair of boobs in Louisana. The people in Al and MS were evacuated before the storm. New Orleans, for the most part, should have been.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 11, 2006 -> 09:34 PM) I agree. Obviously Jenks has had prior issues, but in his year with the Sox I have heard nothing but good things about his work ethic and attitude. Supposedly when he missed that final year with the Angels and got married to his wife he started to calm down and make sense of things. Obviously something could have came off and he could have fallen off the wagon, but I'm not about to speculate it. He's in the spotlight the entire season as are all players and I have zero problem with them staying out of it in the off-season. Hell, I'd prefer it cause usually spotlight in the off-season is a bad thing. Exactly. I hate ignorant speculation based on nothing.

The movie that scared me the most as a kid was Hitchcock's "The Birds". I avoided Hitchcock movies for years after that.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 11, 2006 -> 11:02 PM) There are a lot of folk in Mississippi that would disagree with you. You've talked to these people?

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Feb 11, 2006 -> 11:11 PM) You've heard of ex post facto, right? And please don't bring in a moral issue like slavery in comparison to wire tapping; they're not even close to similar. He brought it up to make a point. It's nothing that hasn't been done by the liberal faction of this board.

Both of them are idiotic.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 11, 2006 -> 05:23 PM) Good call on Jenks. I know he's had issues in the past, but was he totally on the wagon? Good call my ass. It's pure speculation based on nothing. Jenks had something in his personal life to deal with. Can't we allow him that without question what that issue was or speculating that he's binge drinking or something? Damn.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 11, 2006 -> 08:23 AM) Look, of course Nagin and Blanco and their EM agents deserve a lot of blame. So do those NO cops who took off (but then, who wouldn't have, for 18k/year). But why are people here not understanding the idea that this was not a local incident? Incident control has to be granted to the authority that has control over the necessary assets - thats a pillar of EM. Since this effected 3 or more states and hundreds of local municipalities, this could not possibly be coordinated by state and locals. That would be horribly inefficient, and the result would have been more deaths. This was a regional disaster, and required national response. Did anyone notice that this went way beyond New Orleans??? You guys can try to deflect blame from the Feds all you want, but this was clearly a federal screw-up above all other levels of government. FEMA needs re-tooling (starting with getting out of DHS and setting up a system where they can self-declare a disaster), Brown needs to be fired (done), and people need to question Bush's bizarre choices for posts in his administration. Why are people not understand the concept of first response? Did anyone notice that 'beyond New Orleans' was handled pretty damn well in Alabama and Mississippi? Yes, handled quite well on a state and local level.

All time Olympic spoiler moment. I get a phone call from my at the time father-in-law and as an aside he says to me, as I'm watching tape delayed .... "Did you hear the USA beat Russia in hockey?" That's right. 1980. Miracle on Ice. Totally sucked.
