Brief thought
A quality start, as a statistic, is defined by 6 IP and 3 or less runs allowed. So, if Garland pitched 6 innings and gave up 3 runs, it IS a quality start.

Why Adkins? What about Pacheco?
It sounds like he'd fit right in our bullpen.

Although I know predictions made on soxtalk have nothing to do with the actual games, people making any kind of prediction pisses me off. I predict you'll get pissed off again, very soon.

Brief thought
You throw out Garland's April, and he's been pretty decent. But the most telling stats about Garland may be: Home - 5W 3L 3.86 ERA Away - 3W 6L 5.23 ERA Make of these stats what you will, but that is a substantial difference.

Need good reasons for optimism
I'll say this much about this team: The past two years, at this point in the season we were out of it, dead, done, toast, history, whatever. This year we are very much in the thick of it. Whether we win it or not, this is so much better than we've seen recently. I don't really care what the naysayers think or say, I'm going to stay behind this team until it is blatantly obvious that they have no chance whatsoever to win it. Till then, GO WHITE SOX!!!!

Tigers to host 2005 All-Star Game
Actually, that's Chicago. Several people today did tell me that Detroit did, in fact, take over the title in 2001 from Gary and has been increasing it's lead since. What a great record to hold, eh? I'm fairly positive Chicago took the honor in 2002. WGN news, after tonights game, had a story about the Police Commisioner retiring, I believe. (I didn't really pay that close of attention to it.) But, they did say that though crime is down overall in Chicago, there are more murders committed there than in any other large US city.

Joe Crede...Again
I did. Thomas has been a .250-.270 hitter ever since '99 with the exception of 2000..... and that may be generous. Is that because he has been DH'ing the majority of the time? Doubt it. So he got hot during '03's interleague. Is that because he was playing 1B during that stretch? Doubt it. As you said, it wasn't because he was playing 1B. It was because the NL pitchers did not really know how to pitch him. AL pitchers have long since figured Frank out. I made a post after interleague play predicting Frank would hit the skids again, for that very reason.

Need good reasons for optimism???
I don't know why, but Seattle is the LAST team I'd want to play in the playoffs. I'd seriously rather go with the Yankees. It's just the way that Seattle bloops and bleeds that worries. Springfieldfan wanted a reason to be optimistic if we were to go against Seattle. That is definately a reason. Their 1-2-3 comes nothing CLOSE to our 1-2-3 combo, and their #4(Ryan Franklin, I assume....I wouldn't want to mess with Garcia if I were Seattle in the postseason, because he could blow up at any given time) can get lit up(though we didn't do it the last time he pitched against us), because, afterall, he is leading the majors in homers allowed. I like our chances in that department....and that is the only department I like our chances in. Their bullpen kicks our ass any day of the week, their lineup can be just as dangerous as ours, and is a better postseason offense, their defense is much, much, much better then ours, and their coaching staff in general, including their manager, is also better then ours. If we played them in a series, I think they'd win personally. We SUCK against Seattle.

And our fate is in Jon Garland's hands?
Hopefully, the final score of tonight's game will be all the positive spin we need.

Ah, you beat me to it. One question, that says the game is Sunday night. Is that the ESPN Sunday Night Game?

Neal Cotts Fan Thread
I'm all for giving Cotts another shot, as I've said in many other threads. This is not due to me being part of a "Cotts love fest" but due to the fact that I am taking into consideration certain factors, pros and cons, and that is the decision I would come up with if I were in JM's shoes.

Why are we having this discussion in a pennant race?

Hey Dick Allen
Wow. This is the second long thread I've read on the merits, or lack thereof, of the f*** NC thread. Personally, whenever I have a comment obout the pro or cons about a particular player or his performance, I post with the distinct possibility in mind that that player may actually read the post. I would hate for one of my posts to personally insult a member of the White Sox. As for name calling, as a rule, I don't do it. There have been a couple of exceptions. Usually, I'll take the approach to say that a certain post or statement is either idiotic, asisine or moronic. That way, I'm not saying that person who made the post is an idiot or whatever, but that particular statement was idiotic or whatever. To me, there is a vast difference between the two approaches. However, I have learned that not all people see it my way, so I pick and choose when and where to use even those adjectives carefully. Any thread that is labeled "f*** (Player's Name)" is going to put any fans of that player in a defensive mode, at best, right from the start. Others will go directly to attack mode. Don't start a thread like that and expect rational, logical conversation about it. It is not going to happen. You could not logically expect an intelligent, well thought out conversation to develop in a thread with such an unintelligent, not thought out title. You reap what you sow.

The comment about thinking outside the box, I'll agree with. I've used that comment several times about the organization. Wright and Shoene might be the best option. But I still feel Cotts showed enough that he should get one more shot at it. His control has been improving all year, and I still think the circumstances got the best of him.

and might I say, that is what is wrong with a lot of fans and these boards. You are pissed because a debut player goes 0-4? The very best hitters have 0-4 days. What would you call a player who came up as a rookie and went 0-50 plus? What names would you call the manager who played him? The rookie was Robin Vetura who was lucky that his career started before the the attention deficit disorder "got it have it now you better hit 9-10 and I'll say f*** you about the 10th at bat" style of fans that the internet has brought out. If a player is good, you wait them out. We did with Robin and it payed big dividends. If I were a player, I'd be pissed at the fans for being so lacking in baseball knowledge that an 0-4 debut is a problem. In fact, I am not a player and I find a lot of the fan trash talk of our own to be tiresome and totally lacking in baseball reality. If we have to ever let a player go 0-50+ again, ala Ventura, I hope we have a manager who who will have the guts to do it and I will probably skip these boards the entire time because baseball sanity will require it. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The rest of this thread does not deserve any comment whatsoever.

If you're personel is suited to that, and it would work best, why not?

Carlos Febles waived
Actually, Feebles sounds like a perfect pick up for the Cubs. I don't think he'd help us. I'll stick with Robbie for as long as possible, then I believe Hummel will be the man at 2B.

Lets talk about the Sox
It does border on the ridiculous sometimes. I tend to overlook it, and move on.

Hawk and DJ have a crush on Cotts!
Getting into this discussion can be risky. But, hell, it might be worth the gamble. You just never know.

Jimmy Gobble
Came from AA Wichita, where he put up very good numbers. He's a lefty, good arm, very smart. His first two starts were a fluke, but the kid is going to be, in my mind, a pretty good #3. How can you say it was a fluke? It's not ok to judge a guy after one start, but it's perfectly okay to do so after 2? When someone gives up 1 or 2 ER straight from AA, it's most likely a fluke. I disagree. There have always been good pitchers brought up from AA and been successful. Not all of them, certainly. But it does happen. Example: Dontrell Willis. We don't know if Gobble is a fluke or not.
