  1. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 08:56 PM) So the Bears have reached out to Roy Williams, and now to Mike Sims-Walker. I fully expect one of these two or Malcolm Floyd on the Bears in the next 48 hours. It really sounds like any of the three could be signed. if I had to guess, I'd say Sims-Walker is the guy. Although Williams obviously worked with Martz in Detroit.
  2. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 07:48 PM) If you're not going to use him, then get value for him. They did. I don't see why people are so up in arms about it. If you're talking about not getting why the Bears fans are up in arms about Olsen, I agree. I can see why people are getting concerned about the Bears general lack of activity so far though. They have money to spend after being so close to the Super Bowl last year, and appear to be asleep at the wheel.
  3. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 02:38 PM) Klinsmann! : Indeed. I'm VERY happy Bradley is gone. I'm with Soxbadger as well, just no U.S. guy please.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 06:39 PM) If Ozzie believes in this team he should stop gift wrapping games to the rest of the league. Exactly. I really can't understand how Ozzie has defenders left. To a degree, I get the people who still defend Kenny even though I don't at all. Ozzie is just such an amazingly poor game manager though. And there's nothing he can do in any other aspect to overcome that.
  5. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:23 AM) More brains than stones. Let's see you quit a multimillion dollar contract. He still gets the money if he's fired unless he coaches another team. Huh? I'm not saying he should quit. All I'm saying is Ozzie is just a big talker. He pretends like he could quit anytime and go back with his family or get another job the next day. Or like he knows he'll get fired and that's fine. In reality, he'd never quit and he'll go scorched earth whenever he's fired here. I can almost guarantee it.
  6. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 06:30 PM) Oh Christ Martz running the show I never liked Olsen, but you're right about Martz running the show and that really bothers me. The brief player movement period is not off to much of a start for the Bears.
  7. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 21, 2011 -> 11:26 PM) All the schools knew it was coming, they shouldn't act surprised. Also, they are no longer going to be able to do that, and the latest discussion is that the Longhorn Network may not happen, and instead all schools will share one network. The situation is fluid, and no offense 101, those making these predictions have ZERO CLUE about the dynamics involved. Well if the schools share one network, the conference can survive obviously. All I'm saying is the league has no shot at lasting long term if the Longhorn Network exists. One school (probably more) will get tired of it and leave, likely in relatively short order. Obviously, that list starts with Texas A&M. As for Gunner Kiel, more power to Indiana. I'm sure Oklahoma and the SEC schools recruiting him and such were offering him all kinds of interesting benefits, but I give him credit trying to go somewhere and turn the entire program around. I'm sure he loves the resume of the coach, as well as the chance to play close to home. So, while this is absolutely a shocking decision, it isn't senseless. I'm sure Coach Wilson is thrilled, as this will do more for recruiting than he alone ever could, even with his impressive background. I know for a fact NIU beats Indiana for recruits pretty regularly in football (as do many other schools), but I'm guessing that won't happen much anymore. They'll probably be looking more towards higher rated 3 star and 4 star kids. I'd usually say wait until signing day to be excited, but I don't think a kid would make such a drastic decision and then change his mind.
  8. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 10:16 PM) Salak is exempt from waivers. He could be sent to Rockford without any worries. Hmm, I wasn't aware of that. I'd give Emery a much better chance in that case.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 05:47 PM) As a cheap contract, why not? Definitely worth a shot. I'd be surprised if he made the team since they gave Salak a 1 way deal to get him over here, but you never know. Emery is far from some bum.
  10. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) Wasn't the chancellors decision. New BOT members were sworn in today and immediately took action. They are using Ohio State's firing of Tressel and the NCAA's leniency on Ohio State as the example. In essence, UNC football is a giant cluster@#!$, and will continue to be for many years as the academia types try to keep football from mattering. They don't believe football success and being an elite academic institution can coincide. I'm certainly not qualified enough to comment on the bolded, but I think Butch Davis had to go, regardless of where he was the coach, based on the circumstances in place here. I'm shocked he lasted this long. I think looking at Ohio State's apparent success in making Tressel the villain is understandable, but this is different since Carolina basically had an assistant coach acting as a runner.
  11. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) Look junior, take a minute and reread what I said. I never said it wasn't a surrender nor did I say that large scale trading off of talent now wouldn't be a concession. What I basically said was I hate that specific reference to the trade with the Giants in 1997 and wish people would stop bringing it up. Revisionist historians who capitalize the W and the F in white flag, referencing 7/31/97 as a specific dark day in time clearly don't remember how mediocre the '97 team was. We can all debate the quality of return on Hernandez, Alvarez, and Darwin, but only Hernandez had much of a career after 1997. It was b.s. the way the media and fans jumped all over JR and the Sox for making that trade. It needed to be done and actually helped put the Sox on track to re-establish themselves in the division three seasons later. Junior? I'd rather be a "junior" than a crotchety old man. The White Flag trade was not a dark day in White Sox history. It ended up helping in 2000, as you said. People defending it by saying how great Cleveland was that year are just wrong though. They went 86-75. The Sox standings position in late July of 1997 (record and games back) was basically identical to what it is now as well. The fact of the matter is, no matter how much you may not like it, trading away players for kids when only a few games out of first is going to piss most people off. And, it's a sign of throwing in the towel when in the race. You're not winning that battle. It didn't really help establish anything, either. The Sox had a great season in 2000, but were promptly swept and missed the playoffs the four years after that, as everybody knows.
  12. I'm not shooting down anything after last night. But, this seems like pie in the sky stuff. I'd love to see it happen, though!
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:27 PM) They don't make the playoffs if Jake is not developing back towards 100+ pitches. I agree, but they're also not making the playoffs if they continue to leave Jake in too long when it's clear he can't pitch effectively past the 5th. They lost in large part because of it last night, and every game is very important in such a tight race.
  14. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:34 PM) Aramis Ramirez here would be more of the same that we've done for the last few years. Get a good veteran well past his prime. Pass Ramirez's offensive numbers this year are actually slightly above his career norms. Past his prime? He's had lingering injury problems until this year.
  15. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:49 PM) Primarily, IMO, just a stronger desire to have him here. I agree with those saying we're being extra careful with attitude issues after the Rios debacle. JR may have put his foot down. After seeing the actual Rasmus trade, I would agree with you. And I can't be mad if our organization feels Rasmus' character issues aren't worth it. You can certainly understand how they'd come to that conclusion.
  16. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:18 PM) I think we'll take 2 of 3 from BOS, only because we seem incapable of sweeping anyone and Ozzie is bound to leave Humber in there for 3 too many batters in a low scoring game against Lester. What does that do to the tradescape? Great question. We're in such limbo in that regard right now. And you're right about the sweep thing. We have one three game sweep and no four game sweeps (although there are a couple of two game "mini-sweeps" against Cleveland in there) all year. When your offense isn't very good and the manager is an outright dope, it's just really hard to beat somebody three or four times in a row.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:32 PM) Thats what six teams have been hoping for now... Yeah. The Sox aren't the only team that has made a bad deal for Edwin, and I think St. Louis will be looked at as yet another in that group eventually.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 05:07 PM) It would take Danks and Floyd and no major leaguers in return to be the White Flag trade. I agree. Or one of them and Quentin for minor league players. What has been done so far clearly isn't White Flag. I just contest that the circumstances right now that the team's in are similar to what they were in 1997. And for someone to say 1997 wasn't a White Flag trade is laughable, not even worth a discussion.
  19. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 07:40 PM) And somehow strangely enough, he was a lot worse with the Sox than most realize. You know who has been a better pitcher than Edwin Jackson since the trade? That cheaper, younger guy we gave up for him who is under Arizona's control for the forseeable future.
  20. Aramis Ramirez to the Sox actually makes sense. It'll never happen, but it makes sense.
  21. I don't think Ozzie, for all of his big talk, has the stones to quit this job. He'll have to be fired, and I bet he'll go out kicking and screaming whenever he is.
  22. Voting in this is officially impossible since the team itself doesn't even know if they're in or out right now, as recent events have shown.
  23. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 04:38 PM) You could not be more correct and it just proves how little the media actually know about sports. This year would be a white flag but all of the teams suck The Sox were literally in almost in the identical place in the standings and recordwise then as they are now. Yet, it'd be a white flag trade now but not then?
  24. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 04:34 PM) Any chance we can all agree not to use the term White Flag on this site ever again? The Indians were a far better team and franchise in 1997 and were just waiting to make a move in the division. They won the pennant and ended up just short of their first title since 1954. The concept of the White Flag was a fabrication for headlines more than anything else. The only mistake was JR publicly stating the Sox weren't going to catch Cleveland, even though he was correct. The White Sox were a middling team that year and going nowhere. Kind of like this year. Umm, no. The trade in 1997 was a white flag trade. They were 3 out of first when it happened, and in very similar position to where this years team is. If a few major parts are traded away before the deadline, it will be white flag II.
  25. The Hawks invited Ray Emery to camp on a tryout basis today. Interesting move, as he was really good down the stretch for Anaheim last year after Hiller got hurt. Was a big reason why they made the playoffs, actually. I still think Salak will be the backup, but wouldn't count out Emery taking that spot if he has a great camp.
