QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 12:32 PM) Iowa is quietly getting back to being pretty good and I find it hillarous how the only thing you can point at is Iowa State beating Iowa a few times. Last I looked Iowa has completely kicked ass during the Ferentz era when compared to the Clones, but than again so have most programs And I'm happy Kirk stays. The ship has been righted and is heading back in the right direction. I'm happy you feel that way. As long as Zook and Weis are around to get all of the good Illinois players though, Iowa will have problems having any sustained success because they need to be able to raid Illinois in order to be good, so to be fair, it would be hard for anybody to right the ship at Iowa. The main reason Iowa was so good earlier this decade was due to the fact that Illinois had Ron Turner and Notre Dame had Bob Davie/Ty Willingham, and they couldn't recruit for s***. But the Hawkeyes talent level isn't great right now, they aren't recruiting well, and they are like an SEC team (or Penn State) in terms of the number of arrests they have. Ferentz is perhaps the most overpaid coach in America now that Fulmer was fired, and if he's not he's certainly top 5. -

Whoever it was that agreed to this game in the Illinois athletic department should be fired. To agree to a game like this as a Big 10 team is inexcuseable, and they are really paying for it now that they are down 13. HOPEFULLY the Illini can make a comeback, but this is the classic college upset recipe mixing together with the sleepy crowd watching a superior talented but lazy and poor coached team play against the smaller conference, veteran team with a good coach and a lot of experience. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:53 AM) I LOL'd at most of this article... "Moderates to blame for GOP losses, conservative leader says" This guy thinks they need to move further right on social issues. Wow. If guys like this are going to lead the GOP, then they are going to be relegated to being a purely southern party. They can kiss control of either house or the executive goodbye for some time. Fortunately, I am pretty sure that these FRC-type folks are not in the majority of the GOP leadership any more. The blame that Limbaugh and all those other fools are putting on the moderates is asinine. Right leaning moderates (like me) are DISGUSTED with the GOP right now (and I am not just speaking for myself here, I know others like me that agree). The GOP got it's ass kicked this year and has had problems the last few years because George W. Bush has been an awful president, and the right wing loonies like Limbaugh continue to try and take over the party. In fact, I think John McCain (the "moderate" GOP nominee) doomed himself when he tried to appeal to the right wing part of the party, most noteably by picking Sarah Palin as his VP. If the GOP wants to make a comeback, it needs to start by being more willing to compromise on social issues in order to appeal to a wider base (which would probably anger a lot of the looney right, but I really don't care) and go back to being the fiscally responsible party who tries to shrink the government.

Forced volunteerism is an oxymoron in my opinion, however I do think that there are people out there who would LOVE to volunteer and simply don't know how to start in order to do so. If nothing else, the Obama administration seems like it will make it easier for those who want to donate their time to do so, and that's a good thing.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 09:20 PM) But we just voted in the most liberal member of the senate into the White House. How can we possibly be center-right? ANY democrat would have been voted into the White House after the last 8 years. We are for sure a center right country compared to the rest of the world. The one thing that worries me after this election though is the amount of control the democrats have. I think we're better off when the balance of power is just that, balanced relatively close to even between the two parties. And I would be saying this if the republicans had a major stranglehold on the balance of power as well.

If Palin is the 2012 nominee, I will vote Obama, unless he does a poor job these 4 years, in which case I won't vote at all as a move of protest. I can't stand her. By the way, mr genius couldn't be more right in saying that evangelicals have destroyed the GOP. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) I am that way too... socially liberal (or liberatarian, however you want to define it), fiscally conservative and generally in favor of smaller government and free market policies. But I'm usually more willing to compromise for the latter against the former... I will not vote for someone who, for example, openly supports things like Proposition 8, and I'm also turned off by hawkish rhetoric even though I'm not a pacifist. Which usually pushes me a lttle to the left. I'm sure the GOP is aware of all the voters like us, there are a few on this board even, but they can't do anything about it b/c the social conservatives have so much influence. I pretty much agree with this, except I lean to the right instead of the left for some reason. However, the explination in this post is precisely why I would never vote for Sarah Palin for President. To be honest, I'd have a hard time voting for Jindal with as socially conservative as he is, although he's a lot more reasonable than Palin in other categories at least.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) I'm excited to see how well Harangody, Hillesland, McAlarney and Jackson will do with the Irish this year. The best part? Jackson and Harangody will return in 2009-10 with more quality freshmen recruits and Ben Hansbrough. They'll win a ton of games (even in the mighty Big East) due to the offensive firepower, but unless their defense made some drastic improvements, I can't see them going too far in March. They are like the Phoenix Suns circa 2006 of the NCAA right now. -

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) What are you talking about, we have been a jump shooting team ever since we traded Curry. Moreso than not that got us into the playoffs and even into the 2nd round, you must have been watching a different team all these years. Yeah I have, and they are a bad jump shooting team. That's why they have had a bad offense for several years, obviously. They won those few good years with rebounding and defense, the offense had NOTHING to do with it, at all. As for tonight, no idea where that came from but it was fun to watch. -

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 10:23 PM) I haven't see it. Let me guess- he's a freak of nature therefore he's good? Okay. I don't give a damn how much bigger a guy is then what the average guy is who plays the same position- I'll take the guy who can catch the ball and run good patterns, not the guy who can't do those things consistently, and on top of that, get in trouble with the law once or twice a year. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) Deal. I'll take Andre Johnson and Brandon Marshall, and you can have Wes Welker and Kevin Curtis. To go a step further than Tony, I will go on and bet you didn't vote for Obama, even if you are a democrat. We'll leave it at that. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:43 PM) Policy-wise, that sounds like the opposite of what the GOP needs. I mean, that's what they have already been pedaling, and what we saw from most of their primary field. What they need is someone more moderate socially, and more conservative fiscally and intergovernmentally. Now of course, as we saw this election, the discussion is not entirely about policy. You are probably right, and realistically that is very close to the description of how I am politically. Maybe I'm just being negative since I never expect to see a candidate that represents my values.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:14 PM) Socially, maybe. That's kind of what did him in in this election. But he seemed to be a rising star in the GOP, and regardless of his policies he is really a reasonable, moderate guy. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:11 PM) I agree with Jindal. But he might be a little too far right for people to stomach. Especially if Obama does well in his first 2-3 years. IMO, it all really depends on how the GOP civil war ends. Civil war might be a little too drastic, but you get my point. i see a split between Social and Fiscal conservatives with some in the middle. Can't really argue with any of this. But lostfan's point is the main reason I think it's Jindal. He's WAY to the right socially, but he's quite reasonable and relatively moderate otherwise. Seems like the perfect guy to bring the party together.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) I would say Mike Huckabee would be the guy to look out for in 2012. I want to see Jindal at work before I crown him the "The next..." Yeah I would have him in 2nd right now in terms of 2012, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it's Huckabee either. I just think the minority factor will help Jindal (who knew we'd reach a day where that would be the case in this country?)
-
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) http://joinrudy2012.com/ No. No. No. No. No. No. A thousand No's. Bobby Jindal is the clubhouse leader for 2012 IMO. I'd be surprised if Rudy makes another relevant national run for public office again (although it's debateable if his run this time even turned out to be relevant).

If Del Negro really is using a European style offense (and it has looked that way so far), then damn that was a stupid hire. This is an absolutely AWFUL jump shooting team, outside of Deng if he's wide open (and only 20 feet in) and Gordon if he's on a hot streak. Square peg, meet round hole. -
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 07:17 AM) This Prop 8 battle isn't over. It's just a shame that it's going to have to be won in the courts. I'd say there's a 35-40% chance that Prop 8 will not be allowed to be implemented into the California constitution because of the way the decision to allow gay marriage was written. It can actually be thrown out, because if its viewed to be overly discriminatory and taking away rights on an unequal basis, it may be considered invalid. I completely agree with this post, but damn, that is going to get really ugly out there. The anti-gay, far right, "will of the people" folks are going to be out in force for that one. Very unfortunate that it has to come to that point.

As I've discussed on this board before (with lostfan and some others I think), I can't stand Lil Wayne's new album. But this little Obama spin off is pretty funny, and this is the only place I could think of to post this.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:19 PM) There is a very real chance that in four to eight years we will have a president of Indian descent in Bobby Jindal He has to be the clubhouse favorite to be the 2012 nominee now that Sarah Palin has been exposed as a complete jackass.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:34 PM) I worked for an African-American NFL football player (wide receiver from UGA who played for the Broncos and Giants from 92-97) and he was VERY much a Republican. You worked for Arthur Marshall? That's cool.

If last year taught us anything, there is no use worrying about the Cubs until October 1st because the regular season means very little. And even by October 1st, odds are overwhelming that they'll just blow it anyways.

QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:51 PM) Very ill statement man, NBA probably out of all sports (only maybe football) is the most touching to the kids. When you are an NBA star you are a role model. Kobe/Lebron are 2 of the biggest role models in america/world right now. Lebron being cocky means kids on courts will be cocky meaning their will be more fights because cockyness leads to fights. I have alot more respect for kobe. I dont necessarily think lebron is a terrible guy or anything, i think hes just having a bit of fun, but i think that statement is kinda whack. I mean, we don't see the elite construction workers being cocky now do we? . I hate to do this, but I believe I am about to quote Kid Rock (I'm really not white trash, trust me). I believe he once said "I ain't cocky mother f***ers, I just back it up". Now, I certainly see the point you are trying to make here and it is likely valid, but I just think that if you are that good, you can be an arrogant ass if you want to. -

If Marc Gasol averages a double double this year, I would be absolutely stunned. He's an out of shape big man who is a poor shooter outside of 10 feet. He had a great game the other night and is a decent big, but damn, he's not going to average 18 and 12. -
Behind the Scenes of the Campaigns

For the record, if Palin were to be the presidential nominee in 2012 against an incumbent Obama, it would make this years final electoral college total look close. A lot of moderate republicans (like me) would vote for Obama in that senario, unless of course he's just an awful president, which I'm going to assume and hope he's not. Now, of course, the stupid redneck portion of the GOP would probably come out in pretty big numbers for Palin since she is just like them and would be going against an african american/biracial male, but she would still get smoked IMO. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) Yes, it is dead. A lot of commonly believed racial stereotypes and theories died yesterday, and it was long overdue.

I've just about always considered Iowa State's home court advantage as borderline 8th wonder of the world material with as many superior teams as I've seen lose in that building to the Cyclones.
