  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 10:12 PM) This umpiring crew has handed the Cubs this game. A blown balk call on Marmol, and then a bad call on a bunt play at 3rd base. Yeah and on the last at bat of the game, Pujols took a neck high 2-0 pitch for strike 1. Horrible.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 09:40 PM) Watched most of the forum on "Service" earlier tonight. Both candidates did very well and were refreshing to listen to. It's too bad that starting tomorrow it's back to mudslinging. I'm sure we can expect another 54 days of it too. I have grown to be disguisted by the politics of both sides in this race, and I mean that in every sense of the word politics, from their beliefs on the issues to the mudslinging. However, I do think the people on both tickets are legitimately good people, and in that sense we could do worse.
  3. This election confuses me, and figuring out what I think is almost a daily process. In ways, I look at both tickets and feel unhappy because there are a lot of things (the vast majority) on them I don't like politically. But at the same time, I think the people on both tickets are actually genuine good people, so I am hoping that regardless of who wins, that shines through and the winner does a good job. As for who wins, I have no idea. It's going to be very close, and it's difficult to guess.
  4. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sec/0-1-366/Tex...nsas--Dick.html I'll just quote the headline for you....
  5. It would be a much bigger disadvantage to the Astros than advantage to the Cubs. The Cubs are going to finish with the best record in the NL regardless, but the Astros are in a wild card race and playing the games at Wrigley would really eff them over. But I'm not sure how they could play this weekend in Houston when there is a distinct possibility the worst part of a category 3 hurricane will be hitting the city. I would hope the games are moved to a neutral site such as Kansas City.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) I have a different response... McCain is NOT Bush (despite the fact that they are trying to paint it that way). They are both GOP, but they are very different leaders. Oh there is no question about this. I've said for a while that if you don't like McCain that is more than fair, but to say he is like Bush is not fair. However, both sides are doing a lot of things that aren't fair in this election so that is no surprise. I have given up trying to argue that McCain is not Bush though, because that's fallen on deaf ears.
  7. Ahh two of the best posters on the site have the same birthday? Solid, hope you guys are having a great day!
  8. I am not sure if this site has a "best thread starter" award, but Texsox should be the automatic winner of that award every year if it does. As for pedicures, I've never had one but I certainly wouldn't be against trying it.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) By the way, how ridiculous is it that Joe Mauer is hitting .365 at home for the season? After seeing a game up there this July, I can tell you it's not ridiculous at all. Mauer, as we all know, loves going to left center field and that area of the Metrodome is HUGE. It's great that the Twins lost today (getting back on topic), we REALLY need to get a win tonight.
  10. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 03:00 PM) I'm talking about America's foreign policy, and how that's viewed worldwide etc. Also, the prevailing feeling I know from Australia, is how could you re-elect a Republican after 8 years of Bush and what he has done to the country? The comment that Obama made of McCain voting 90% of the time with Bush, really hit hard for me on the above. I would answer the bold the same way I answered it in 2004 at about this time (although it was 4 years of Bush then, not 8 obviously). The opponent the democrats have fired back with is very weak, which has caused the election to become very close and a virtual toss up. Neither party has many answers right now, regardless of what they tell you. I don't really trust EITHER candidate in regards to foreign policy actually. As you can see, I'm slightly negative about this race though. I have been much more anti-Obama than anything, and even that is mostly caused by the asinine way he is perceived by the media and his supporters. I really don't like either candidate much.
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 11:57 AM) here's what I've seen so far: Post-Palin pick, the polls have tightened nationally with McCain in the lead in some. But on a state by state, it's gotten tighter, but Obama still holds the edge by a slim margin. That Ohio poll is the first poll where I've seen Obama take a slightly bigger lead in a state. Mostly, it's tightened by a point or two. In my opinion, that bolds well for Obama. After all the hits and Palin bounce, Obama still has a slight edge. But it wont take too much to swing one way or another. And a poll done by FOX News/Rasmussen released 2 days before this one, shows McCain +7. Ohio has been VERY hard to nail down. Almost every other poll shows the other candidate int he lead. But, the Quinnipiac has almost 3 times the sample size as the FOX News/Rasmussen poll, so that might be something. Ultimatly., it comes down to weighting. In my opinion, polls are not an accurate reflection of the electorate. They are a best guess projection. Yes they are based on strong research and principles, but in the end, you have to decide how to weight the poll and that is not an exact science. I think this whole election is hard to nail down. In all honesty, we are going to have to wait until November 4th and wait and see what happens. It's going to be a fun day and a very close race, and who knows who will win. I can't wait to see.
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) It took long enough: Palin to meet the press Yea, I'd hate to have her actually answer tough questions about her record. Wouldnt want to do that. I think her refusal to meet the media for this long is a joke, but I wouldn't talk to MSNBC if I were a republican, just as I would avoid Fox News if I were a democrat. Anybody from either party who does otherwise has my respect though (I respect Obama for going on O'Reilly for example) because it's like going into a hornets nest from either perspective. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) He's only saying what the rest of the world is thinking though (well except for Turkey). Everyone will lose more faith in America and its people if you elect John McCain (and then end up having a female president with only 2 years experience from Alaska). The rest of the world isn't as aware of the problems in America as America itself is. Realistically, Washington is broken and neither Barack Obama or John McCain will fix it, regardless of what both sides are saying. The question is not who will make America better, it's who will screw it up less.
  13. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 01:24 PM) I think Lance uses. I think that most of the tour uses. I don't think it's cheating. This point I am much more open to listening to. I think the list of people not using on the tour is so short, that it's almost not a competitive advantage to those who are.
  14. We really need Balta to come in here and explain how this thing works and what is going to happen on October 21st.
  15. QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 10:29 PM) And it's still almost 900 miles from you. I think that quote is saying what it will be like when the storm passes. Ike is a monster, but he's not THAT big. Btw, I follow Ike here: http://www.noaawatch.gov/2008/ike.php But Steff's site is very good as well.
  16. They updated the track and as of now, it looks like it's forecast to make landfall in between Corpus Christi and Houston (but much closer to Houston). It's such a large storm though, and combine that with the fact that the forecast track of it seems to vary widely by day, and they should be on alert pretty much throughout Texas and even towards the Louisiana border. The entire "forecast cone" area is at risk. This thing could be a real whopper in terms of a major cat 3 or maybe even a 4 when it makes landfall though, regardless of where that may be, so this is trouble. The best hope right now is the center of it makes landfall in between Houston and Corpus Christi in areas with not as many people, or so I would think. Also, the 5 day forecast track shows this thing will probably move in a similar fashion to Gustav once it gets well inland, bringing rain all the way up to Chicago next week. But again, that a long way off and first, let's hope Texas does as well as possible in this. I wonder if they'll have to evacuate Harris County (Houston).
  17. They must REALLY think Poreda isn't ready.
  18. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 04:45 PM) Ok, I'm the king of snark and Kaperbole ™, but can we please stop now? It's getting almost unbearable reading in here now - everyone is getting so petty, and it's not just this thread, it's pretty much this whole damn forum. If you've noticed, even I've stopped the over the top stuff because honestly, I'm annoying myself. There is no doubt this is true. It's a sign of just how close the presidential race is.
  19. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 04:33 PM) You forgot an article in this post, so I guess no one is supposed to listen to your comments now? Let's try to not play grammar police, because I'm sure everyone slips up every now and then, even you (obviously). I love the grammar police. When all somebody can do is be critical of a grammatical faux pas, they are obviously having trouble finding something in the content itself to be critical of. It's also a sign of grouchiness, and I love when I annoy people. QUOTE (Soxy @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 04:20 PM) My point was if you are going to talk about what an idiot someone is (much less a Harvard educated person), perhaps you should demonstrate mastery of the English language in your critique. I'm not saying I would be swayed by a person who is famous. My point is more that I won't listen to someone who doesn't understand his (presumably) native language's grammar. That's it? I was expecting a better rebuttal than this. So grammar errors are no longer allowed. That's good to know, I'm glad you've never made one.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 04:07 PM) Unless it's Chuck Norris or Ted Nugent. No, they should shut up too. They're just as stupid as all of the rich and famous democrats who think their opinion should be heard and considered relevant.
  21. QUOTE (Soxy @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 03:57 PM) That post would have been so much more convincing if it were grammatically correct. I appreciate the irony though. I don't do grammar checks when I post here. It's hard enough to keep track of it when I have to, I'm certainly not going to waste my time here. Thanks for validating my point by going the route of grammatical criticism though. I'd love to know why you think the opinions of the rich and famous matter.
  22. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) If there is a war exemption you might as well forget it. We are always at war. This is exactly why I'm against this. In theory, a balanced budget amendment sounds great. But in practice, I have no idea how it would work during times of war, and I can't see very long periods of peace in our future, regardless of which party is in the Oval Office. There is just too much bad s*** going on in too many places, and too many people that want to do harm to us. And this is coming from a guy (myself) who was against the Iraq war from day 1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) If he/she screws things up royally you elect someone to take their place*. *Does not include the past 8 years. Americans forgot to care about the issues for some reason. Do you really have to throw a pot shot in every post? It could certainly be argued Americans aren't forgetting the issues, they are just making a statement about how awful the candidate for the democratic side is.
  23. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) And Yes, I agree, most celebrities should be ignored when voicing their political opinions. EDIT: And when I say "ignored" I mean that their opinions shouldn't matter because their idiots with no clue what is going on. Fixed. And for the record, I'd say the same thing if they were all republicans. Some rich, famous person's opinion should mean nothing. End of story. The vast, vast majority of them don't even have a clue what they are talking about and say stupid s*** just because they can.
  24. QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 03:01 PM) That's a pretty bold accusation. Does it stem from anything or just hate? Lance Armstrong is right up there with Sammy Sosa on the "he didn't test positive, but damn it's obvious what he was doing" scale. I personally have no hate for Lance Armstrong, he's made himself quite a bit of money doing it and the fact he's even alive is remarkable (although his cancer recovery and cycling careers are seperate things). But to think he's been clean all along is to have your head in the sand.
  25. It's bizarre enough that a guy most of us wanted on the bench has been saving our asses since August 1st. It'd be even more incredible if he can miraculously come back from what looked to a horrible injury and carry us to the playoffs. It would just add to the already immense legend of Paul Konerko.
