Official 2008-2009 NBA Thread
whitesoxfan101 replied to The Beast's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 21, 2008 -> 09:59 AM) Where are the conspiracy buffs? Wasn't it Ewing to the NY Knickerbockers against similar odds that brought out howls of protest I have NO doubt this was fixed for the Bulls in the estimation they'll take the hometown kid Rose and he'll bring them back. This is typical NBA and the fix is in here, but since it helps the Bulls, I'm being a hypocrite and not caring. As for the pick, I think Beasley is better than Brand, but the comparison is fair because they are both undersized 4's that have shown they always put up huge numbers, but sometimes empty huge numbers. I've stated I'd take Rose, but if they take Beasley I can't blame them. A lot depends on what they can get in trades for who, and thus what spots on the roster would be opened after that trade. I think they'll trade who they can for whatever is the most they can get before the draft, and pick accordingly with how that goes. If Hinrich, Gordon, or Gooden isn't traded before the draft, I'd be shocked. -
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 21, 2008 -> 09:54 AM) I need a SS Nomar Garciaparra, circa his Red Sox days.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 21, 2008 -> 01:30 AM) The Astros lineup is so messed up...Bourn should be hitting 8th at this point in time and why in blue f*** was Hunter Pence hitting behind Geoff Blum? Because as we know, Geoff Blum in Houston= $$$$$$$$$$$$ And it was true again tonight, walks to load the bases and set up the Pence grand slam.

The more I think about it, the more I think the following will happen: 1. The Bulls will make a multi player trade, clearing a spot for Rose or Beasley to have all to himself. 2. The Bulls will just draft whoever fits based on the trade they can make. The question is, who can the Bulls move and who can they get the most for on the roster? It's going to be a fascinating 5 weeks (I believe that is how long it is) until the draft, between trade talk and general Rose vs. Beasley debate, because neither side of the argument is right or wrong. The Bulls, no matter what, SHOULD get a great player here so I'm pumped.

The assist stat, to be fair, is deceiving. It is low, but Memphis runs that dribble drive offense which does get a lot of open looks, but does not lead to a lot of assists. Plus, Memphis didn't really have any good three point shooters or consistent scorers inside, so Rose wasn't in a situation where he'd have a lot of dimes.

2007-2008 NHL Catch All Thread

Wolves with another dominant 4-1 win, this time at Toronto, to take a 3-0 lead in the west finals. The Wolves look ready to punch their ticket to the Calder Cup Finals. -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 20, 2008 -> 11:15 PM) So can we draft CP3? Either way, that's probably the least valid reason for drafting Rose. Chandler is still terrible offensively and pretty much gets all of his points off alley-oops. Tyrus doesn't have the same work ethic or the same defensive abilities as Chandler. Rose will be as good as CP3, IMO. And we don't know that about Tyrus, he has a lazy reputation but so did Tyson while he was here. Those reputations were put out there by Skiles, and I don't trust that at all. Tyrus actually has a better offensive game than Tyson as well.

Mabee and Allen really standing out this year so far.

We caught a break avoiding Carmona and Lee this series, and made our own break by beating C.C. tonight. Looking good, keep it up fellas.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 20, 2008 -> 05:53 PM) I made the mistake of watching Chicago Tribune Live today and witnessed Phil Rogers' douchebaggery. He pretty much expects the Indians to sweep the Sox and believes that this will be the series that the Indians start their run-away with the division. He goes on to say that the Indians pitching is superior to the White Sox (has he seen CLE bullpen lately?) and that Sox "don't have any hitters." Well we beat C.C. tonight and don't see Carmona or Lee this series so his prognostication is looking good so far. In all seriousness, he should have just said "GO CUBBIES, f*** YOU WHITE SOX", because that is what he meant. No logic can back what he said, so it was just Cubbie cheerleading clearly.

What an amazing night. You can't go wrong with either guy (the Heat almost have it easier being #2, they can just take the one that's left), but I'd take Rose and here is why: 1. Beasley plays zero defense, Rose has shown himself to be at least an average defender. 2. Rose is the type of player that makes your team better and can make mediocre players look good a la CP3. 3. It's a point guards league more and more every year. 4. Seen Tyson Chandler lately? CP3 can do things like that for Tyrus Thomas. 5. Luol Deng will always be open. 6. You can let Ben Gordon go and not worry. Beasley is a great talent and would be a good pick, but to me, you have to take Rose. My last worry is that Beasley would be like a better Elton Brand here, empty 20/10 on a bad team. At least Rose could create for and make others better. This draft lotto was of course fixed, as they often are, but who the hell cares when it helps the Bulls? /hypocrite

There is zero doubt Lebron is going to leave Cleveland for a bigger market when his contract is up. In fact, some people think he has a bonus he gets in his Nike contract if he does that. The question is which will he go to. It won't be LA since the Clippers blow and the Lakers have Kobe's deal. It could be the Bulls, but Paxson isn't a smart fella so I'm not sure about that either. Thus, most people speculate Nets or Knicks, and with the way things are now, the Nets are the clear favorite.

If I'm Barry Bonds, and a hall of famer without them, then HELL NO. If I'm Brady Anderson, a journeyman who could make myself tens of millions of dollars and turn into a 50 home run hitter with them. If steroids, like in that senario, could help me go from a 500K player to a multi millionaire who can help support my family, I'd have to strongly consider it. I've always said that guys who were fringe players that made it and made a lot of money due to PED's boost, I have a hard time blaming them. It's the guys like Bonds and Clemens who were rich and great AND STILL took PED's that I can't stand. No reason for it. But overall, I'm not sure because I'm not in that spot.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 20, 2008 -> 01:24 PM) As lostfan mentioned a few posts earlier, Obama has not stated he would talk to Hamas. It was McCain, in 2006, that implied that we should talk to Hamas. I am not an expert on everything McCain as much as you are since I am not one to spin everything for one person, but if you don't realize what Obama said, that's your problem. He only won't talk to Hamas NOW because he has seen how much the "talking to our enemies as well" comment doesn't really resonate with the voters.

There is ZERO chance that Donaghy was the only guy betting on games, especially ones he officiated. "One rogue referee", as the smug Mr. Stern put it, is not the way something like this works. The NBA has done well hiding it so far, but one day the truth will come out and the NBA will look awful, and that day might be sooner than later with the way that article looks.
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 19, 2008 -> 11:26 PM) Just another reminder of the position of Hamas. Elected, sure. But their goal is pretty obvious. Well obvious to everyone, but the Obama campaign who think that face to face will make any difference in hamas's view that Israel needs to be wiped off the map. To me, Obama's whole "we have to talk to our enemies too" shtick has been his biggest mistake outside of spending 20 years under the tutelage of Jeremiah Wright. McCain should and probably will pound Obama on the campaign trail for that. Things like this really seem to show either that Obama's lack of experience is glaring, or if that's not the case, he's just generally ignorant to the purpose and goals of enemies, especially like Hamas.

The 4 Things That Worry Me About John McCain

Both candidates have a myriad of things that should concern you, regardless of what party you belong to, which is why this election should be so interesting. -
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ May 20, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) The articles I've seen say that this is a pretty aggressive type of tumor and the average survival period is less than a year. The yahoo article says the slower growing types can be survived with for 5 years, but for it to cause a seizure, you wonder how long Mister Kennedy has had this tumor only for it to be undetected. It's unfortunate certainly, but the one thing that can be said for the senator is he has lived a full and seemingly for him fufilling life, which is a blessing and unfortunately a rarity in that family. There are a lot of things you could argue about him, but I think he's shown over the years to be somebody that at the very least cares about people who are less fortunate than he, and there isn't much you can do but wish him the best.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 20, 2008 -> 08:51 AM) I still wish I could see the lottery balls being picked. I hate Stern walking out with that smug look on his face pulling out envelopes. It seems totally rigged This type of thing I agree with, and it's why Stern is stupid. He knows the perception of the league's horrid refs and the lottery, but does nothing about it. He should change both, but never does, causing the league to continue to have as close to a WWE feel to it as any pro sports enterprise. It either IS fixed (not likely) or Stern is just a fool.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2008 -> 10:31 PM) It won't matter. The fact that Obama is going to firmly come up with a lead in pledged delegates tomorrow is going to be something the media is happy to repeat, even though it's not fully true until Michigan and Florida are decided somehow. He should also guarantee himself a lead in any reasonable version of the popular vote. Read a great line the other day. We finally came up with a solution to the Primary mess. Clinton fights on, while Obama drops out to run in the general election against McCain. My comment about the Clinton spin cycle was more out of annoyance, she just needs to quit. Her staying in the race is only making her look bad. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2008 -> 10:24 PM) Just think, we have a very reasonable shot at a Pistons/Spurs rematch! The NBA (*cough* the refs) will not allow that to happen.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 19, 2008 -> 09:32 PM) Suffolk poll has Obama +4 in Oregon I just can't buy that since he had 75,000 people at a rally yesterday, I'd think it's closer to the 13 the other poll mentions. He's going to be destroyed in Kentucky though, the Clinton spin machine will be in full cycle tomorrow night and Wednesday. -
It seems like Kobe's time. The Spurs look very old and were fortunate that the Hornets choked tonight. I'd be very surprised if LA doesn't move on.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 19, 2008 -> 07:36 PM) Great catch by Edmonds...I'm sure all the douchebags love him now. It wasn't a great catch, it was a TERRIBLE angle and bad midjudgement of the ball turned into a semi over the shoulder (although not really was it even a full over the shoulder) catch. I give him no credit for that, he made the catch hard himself. Also, the people who say the NL is resurgent don't watch the games. They may have a lot of the top statistical guys offensively, but that's because the pitching in that league is AWFUL. The Cubs lineup is very good, but they never seem to see good starting pitching more than once a week. Just because the AL has a lot more good pitching and the NL a lot more good hitting doesn't mean the AL is down, it just means games are being played differently.
