  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 04:32 PM) Bob Nightengale‏Verified account @BNightengale 2h2 hours ago Scott Boras says there have been no talks w #Nats about contract extension for Bryce Harper but he's willing to listen. The Nats ownership believe Harper in free agency would cost in excess of $500 million I doubt any team would sign him for more than 12 years or give him more than $40 million AAV.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 04:42 PM) I guess one way to operate under the radar is to not go see or scout the guy you are trying to sign. Like 16 other teams did?
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) There hasn't been a single public connection between the Sox and Ohtani. That doesn't preclude the possibility of the White Sox pursuing or signing him.
  4. QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) It was reported at the time of the showcase - which was some time ago so I do not recall. I'll pull a google search to see if I can dig it up thou. Rosenthal So more than half of the teams didn't attend, then? Because apparently every team has shown interest in him at the GM meetings.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 11:36 AM) Plenty of teams can offer his bat ABs. This is false. In fact being in the AL would cost him ABs because of the DH. If he started and the Sox didn't use the DH, you don't get the DH back once a reliever comes in. The Sox would either have relievers hitting or need potentially multiple pitch-hitters in a game if they went without the DH. If he went 6 innings, that is still 2ABs that need to be covered. If the latter were the case, they would need to carry a bigger bench than they have to cover the extra possibilities. So you have 1-2 games a week where you have no DH and have to use pinch hitters? I don't see how that's a big issue.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 11:16 AM) Everyone is "trying". Teams are trying to make an impression on the guy anyway possible. They are trying to figure out what the guy really wants in an MLB City and trying to sell that to his camp in anyway possible. He hasn't even been posted yet, so the fee hasn't even started to come into play. If "everyone" is trying, that would include the White Sox.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 08:08 AM) #1 is that we don't even appear to be trying. We haven't been scouting him at all at his starts. He had one total pitching appearance this year due to injury. Also, no one is "trying" at this point, "trying" would be posting the $20 million fee to negotiate with him.
  8. QUOTE (Soha @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 07:15 AM) It would feel like a longshot in every possible way: 1) One of the worst teams in baseball 2) Weren't among the teams originally thought to be interested 3) A team that doesn't have a sexy ballpark, fanbase or history. What exactly is going to draw him here? Sure it's possible...but it feels like a 1 in 1000 chance at best. He doesn't seem to care about money and I've read that he's stated that he doesn't want to go to an established team. Combine those two factors, which scream White Sox, with the fact that the White Sox can afford him the opportunity to try to make it as a two way player (SP/DH) as well or better than any team in baseball, and that he'd still be in a major market in Chicago, it starts to make sense.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Don't forget repealing the AMT. Wouldn't want the wealthy paying their fair share.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 11:46 PM) (And yet the Tigers were happy to throw that money at Justin Upton.) Well sure, because they just trade him, because the league always bails the Tigers out of their bad contract decisions.
  11. Why is the attitude here so dismissive of this possibility? Can you imagine if the White Sox did land him and he lived up to the hype? Adding Otani to Rodon, Anderson, Moncada, Jimenez, Kopech, Giolito, Lopez, Robert, Hansen, Collins, Rutherford, Fulmer, Cease, et al would be a coup and I think accelerate the process of the rebuild and extend the timeframe in which we could expect to see results.
  12. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Don’t know if this has been shared yet: https://www.thescore.com/news/1415026 I sure hope they're right. Otani is the only free agent I really want this offseason.
  13. QUOTE (Quin @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 01:28 PM) Now an elementary school in Northern California got shot up Sadly not a mass shooting by current definition as only 3 died.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 11, 2017 -> 08:29 AM) Sure. But the money is fairly limited because they are arbitration and not free agent years. The Sox won't destroy the system for an extension. Is there some rule that says that a player in arb years can't sign a frontloaded deal? I can't imagine the MLBPA allowing it.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 03:02 PM) An Abreu deal can't be front loaded. He still has two arb years left. An extension such as that would buy out the arb years.
  16. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 02:21 PM) I'm just messing. Has time to improve I guess. But it doesn't seem like 1B is locked down for the Rox long term either. Which would be solved by Abreu. If they're trying to win now, Abreu makes sense. If they're not, they should and probably will hang on to McMahon.
  17. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 02:04 PM) We're all scouts now? Scouts apparently don't, either.
  18. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 09:07 AM) People keeping throwing McMahon out there but that guy is going nowhere unless Arenado signs an extension soon. Why? No one here thinks he can play 3B, so why would him staying or going depend on Arenado? McMahon+ for Abreu makes sense of they see their contention window as being right now, which they should if they want to keep Arenado. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 09:39 AM) Just to be clear, this isn't a contest to determine who can field an MLB team with the lowest payroll. We can pay some people. Lower payroll in 2018 = more money to spend in 2019. If the White Sox land Manny Machado because they have a lower payroll this year, it's worth it. Besides, there's a chance the White Sox could get the best free agent of this offseason for $300K.
  19. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 05:54 PM) https://bosoxinjection.com/2017/10/15/poten...get-jose-abreu/ Eduardo Rodriguez is an interesting place to start trade talks. Like I said, they'd need to pull from their MLB roster to get him. Rodriguez and Groome would be interesting, and help the fact that White Sox pitching has become overwhelmingly right handed. That said, I feel that package is at least a little light (would need a lotto ticket or two in there to really like it) and I'd really rather get some more hitting prospects here. Any chance they'd be interested in Garcia? I'd take Rodriguez for Garcia and consider that a win. Anyone think there's any chance the Rockies would send McMahon and Dahl for Abreu?
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 12:26 PM) Unless 25+ people are gunned down, it's so normal that we don't hear about it any more, and we only get one of those every few months. Even still, saying it happens "about once a year" when the reality is that it happens about once a day demonstrates a clear lack of understanding of this issue.
  21. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 12:11 AM) I'm surprised we haven't seen anybody launching a bunch of homemade pipebombs with shrapnel into huge crowds yet. I'm also surprised that out of 320+ million people living in this country we only get a shooting once a year or so. Speaks volumes to what an absolutely wonderful place this is to live. Just like anywhere else in the world we have some crazies. But our crazies barely ever do damage. Sure sucks when they do though. Just mind-boggling that only 1 out of 150+ million adults per year gets pissed off enough to go out and do something horrible to random people. Now gang violence, revenge, general homocide will always happen, guns or no guns. And somebody pissed off enough to want to kill 50 people will clearly be determined enough to find a way without his little ar15. Bombs is when it gets scary. Can't outlaw homemade bombs and I'm thankful nobody is doing that. In the 9 days of November 2017 thus far, there have been 8 mass shootings in the United States. In 2017 thus far, there have been 307 mass shootings in the United States. What on Earth do you mean by "we only get a shooting once a year or so"?
  22. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 04:40 PM) I think the biggest problem was the MLBPA didn't want Otani to get screwed by having to leave money on the table, but once its made clear that he is willing to do that and doesn't care if his team gets more money than he does, everything will be resolved. What is interesting if how this will effect other Japanese players that might want to come over. If the previous deal is just extended a year and the next deal will have the percentage formula, NPB teams can probably get more now than a percentage of the small international caps. The 15-20% thing would apply to players 25 and over who would be eligible for MLB contracts as well.
  23. QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 12:27 PM) Yesterday was honestly one of the best days of my young political career. Got to watch a blue wave of returns come in while sitting in the White House bouncing questions off a high-ranking administration official. Everything has changed after last night. It's pretty exciting. Hopefully that momentum carries into midterm elections.
