Joe Nathan on the way out the door...
Benchwarmerjim replied to RudyLawRules's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(Chombi @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:06 PM) If they could get Troy Patton for Nathan then it's worth it. I'd imagine it may get them another prospect too, but maybe not since the Stros are pitching depleted everywhere. If I were the Twins, I'd give them Boof Bonser just to sweeten the deal. Sounds crazy but it seems they are trying to go that direction and Boof is definately their weak link in that rotation to me. I think if Boof comes into Spring Training overwight, you will see him dealt. The Twins, I think, are still high on him. Love his curveball, and his competitiveness. But his weight last year hampered him. He lost stamina in the 4th inning. And if being a starter fails, he could always be that long reliever. Matt Guerrier was that guy until last year until Jesse Crain blew out his arm -

I was seeing rumors on the Twins blogs that some websiter reported that the Twins shopped Nathan to Houston That doesnt make any sense, Houston doesnt really have any parts the Twins need, unless they give up Hunter Pence, which they would never do -
I know there were a few BatGirl fans round these parts, juts wanted to let you know that she posted a blog about Delmon coming ot the Twins http://mngameday.blogspot.com/2007/11/team...oung-style.html

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 07:52 PM) If the alternative is him going to the Red Sox, do you really have a choice? but the Red Sox were not going to give up what the Twins wanted. The Yanks should of known that. I think Bill Smith woulld of been willing to sit on Santana if he didnt get what he wanted. -

Looks like the Yanks caved in, and are going to offer Hughes in the Johan deal http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...hes_in_p-2.html -

Boof is doing this weight training program in the offseason. Last year he was overweight and out of shape. By the 4th inning he was gassed. I think the Twins are going to throw him out there as thier #3 or 4 starter. But I could seem him as a closer. good fastball and a fantastic curveball -

Im sure the Twins have another arm lined up to take the closers role. They have done it in the past. Rick Aguleria was a decent starter turned into an elite closer. LaTroy Hawkins was a bumbling starter turned into a good closer. Eddie Guardado was a middle relief guy turned into a reliable closer. Joe Nathan is a setup guy turned into an All Star caliber closer. -

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 10:43 PM) So, what do you think Jim? Roto seems to think adding Morlan for Rincon makes the deal a lot better for the Rays. I'm not very familiar, so I'm kinda going off that. I like the move. While it hurts to lose Garza, it shows the new GM is willing to trade for some bats. Yeah, Delmon strikes out a ton, but he is immedeatly the 3rd or 4th best bat in the lineup (Morneau Mauer Cuddyer/Young). Also Cuddy and Youngs arms in the outfield is pretty cool (I imagine Young will play left and Cuddy stays in right) I just wish Rincon would of went. He stinks -

its official Tampa gets Garza, Bartlett, and Jose Morlan, a fireballer 21 year relief pitcher Minnesota gets Young, Harris, and Pridie apparently, Tampa didnt liek Juan Rincons elbow issues in teh past, or something along those lines, which is too bad. I would of loved to see that $3 mil salary get dumped -

Bonser is working on a program that will cut his weight in the offseason. Last year, has was overweigh and out of shape and ran out of gas after about 4 innings. By trading Johan, the Twins will recieve a young stud pitcher in return BTW, it turns out this Garza/Young deal is being held up by Juan 'steriod' Rincon. The Rays are worried about his elbow -
there have been some Twins fans and blogs talking about getting him. Since he has a suspension, he should be cheap. Sign him to a 1 yeal deal to tide over the loss of Torii Hunter

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) You're right, I just meant on the counteroffer. I was unclear there, my bad. ah Well, from what I understand, Santana countered with 7/125. He wants a Barry Zito type contract. So that basically means start lining up your best trade offer because there is no way the Twins are going to sign that
-
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 03:12 PM) Recall that the Twins offered Johan $93 mil to stay. A far cry from fa money, but a lot for the Twins. Supposedly, Johan countered with $126 mil. Which is a lot, but a lot less than he'd make as a fa, and close enough to $93 mil to make me worried... No word on the years. from what I undestand, the Twins offered 5/93

I like the little 'leading off base' graphic they have put up for runners on first. I have had no qualms with the announcers, but the Orsillo/Simpson duo that did the Rocks/Phils series stood out (to me at least). They let the game be the game it seemed. I hope TBS does a great job next year for the Sunday afternoon Game of the Week

you may be right on that but then, why were the Red Sox the only team to give Ortiz an offer (if memory serves me right) Hindsight is great. Sometime you let a guy go and he suck, sometimes you let a guy go and he's good. Dems da breaks.
-
Seattle gave up on Ortiz first. The Twins acquired him in a trade for Dave Hollins. Ortiz was actually a PTBNL. The Twins gave up on Ortiz because he was always injured. And they had Doug Mientkiewicz at the time and Justin Morneau waiting in the wings

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Sep 4, 2007 -> 01:41 PM) My wife said she heard the same thing. I did not notice but I was only half paying attention. Was Baker part of the Nomar deal? If not , who did the cub give up to Minnesota? Baker was a 2nd round draft pick The Twins got a minor league Justin jones from the Cubs in that Nomar mess of a trade

QUOTE(OfficerKarkovice @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) Nothing against Terry Ryan because he has been a great GM for the Twins but... KW would have been absolutely KILLED on this board if his biggest moves in the last two years were adding Tony Batista, Rondell White, Sidney Ponson and Ramon Ortiz. Ryan was slaughted for making those moves except for Ortiz on most of the Twins blogs (Some thought Ortiz was an OK signing, not much money for maybe a servaceable player) from the press conference, Ryan sounded like he was burned out on administrative stuff. So he is going to be a player evaluator and this Bill Smith guy sounds like more of an administrator. At least Ryan left with parts in place. Things were terrible in the late 90's, and Ryan should get credit for making the Twins a small/mid market powerhouse (but just not enough oomph to win in the playoffs)

I dont know if it was posted, because Im not going to read 49 pages of this thread, but the Twins were making a big push for Dye Tried for Dye, Piazza Ryan worked the phones hard before Tuesday's nonwaiver trade deadline but has been reluctant to discuss the talks. But sources have confirmed that Ryan was on the phone with Chicago General Manager Kenny Williams on Tuesday in an attempt to trade for White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye. Trading within the division is tough. The Twins haven't made a deal with the White Sox since 1986 and haven't made a trade with a division team since 2001, when they landed relief pitcher Todd Jones from the Tigers. It's not known what Ryan offered, but Dye remains with the White Sox and is negotiating a contract extension. The Twins also were interested in Mike Piazza, who would have been a designated hitter and the third catcher. There have been indications that Piazza prefers to play on one of the coasts. Still, the Twins could make a move for Piazza if he clears waivers, or put in a waiver claim on him sometime this month. Piazza entered Friday batting .297 with three homers and 20 RBI. He has been limited to 38 games because of shoulder problems. Any team that lands Piazza now would be on the hook for about $2.8 million, but the Twins have saved about $2.5 million by trading Luis Castillo and losing Cirillo on waivers. http://www.startribune.com/509/story/1343493.html
