  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 30, 2012 -> 02:34 PM) The Sox thrive on this stuff apparently. Is today Robin's first time getting tossed?
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2012 -> 02:32 PM) Trade Viciedo for Josh Hamilton or Matt Kemp, lol. Well, maybe Kemp. Hamilton's a FA after this year
  3. When is the last time Stewart pitched, btw? Weekend game against Cleveland right? So if Jones gets tired or the game goes to extras we have the "long man".
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 30, 2012 -> 02:31 PM) Ohhhhh, well that helps a bit. Did the Beckham or AJ HBP's today look at all intentional? Seems really unlikely the Beckham one was on purpose. Everyone in this thread said the AJ one was intentional.
  5. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ May 30, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) You're tryin' too hard to make it believable We actaully do. See that "Cost controlled talent" thread? Another addition to that would be great. And if you're really concerned about this season, then having Orlando Hudson replace Escobar as a legit IF backup would be a substantial upgrade if Morel could put up anything better than the .700-ish OPS hudson has put up over the last few seasons combined.
  6. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ May 30, 2012 -> 02:08 PM) remember the Twins writer that was hating on Hudson, I wonder if he had him confused with Orlando Cabrerra. Can Hudson be the 2011, Julio Cruz? Who?
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 30, 2012 -> 02:07 PM) Watch out for a flying projectile from Balta! Yup.
  8. Get healthy and come back 100% Brent, we need you.
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ May 30, 2012 -> 01:56 PM) Anyways, offense redeeming itself here. You just needed Viciedo up.
  10. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ May 30, 2012 -> 01:32 PM) I was thinking it was June, but not sure. I thought they had to have less the 85 days of service time or something like that in the year for it to not count towards arbitration. Thinking back to '09 we called up Beckham in early June for the same reason. I could be wrong tho. Heres the complicated rule on that extra arb year. The fact that he was called up last year matters.
  11. QUOTE (DBAHO @ May 30, 2012 -> 11:11 AM) Here we go again; http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--nets-nee...GhvcgRwb3MDMQRz Actually hoping the Nets somehow get the #1 pick. Davis + Brooks + Morrow + future 1st for Dwight would do me just fine I think, although we'd probably try to put Hedo's or J-Rich's contract into the deal also. Serious Q: How many teams in the lottery would rather hold onto that pick than go for Dwight (if Dwight would extend there)?
  12. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ May 30, 2012 -> 10:49 AM) So then the commonly held theory that servers rely on tips to make money doesn't really seem to hold true. They are guaranteed the exact same minimum wage as every other joe-blow standing behind a cash register in a retail store. They simply rely on tips to make more than minimum wage. If restaurants got rid of tips they would probably make less money. But that assumes there are other workplace protections. If the workplace starts casually firing the people who actually report that they're not earning enough in tips, well they're in good shape, because they can always say "Taht person wasn't doing their job well and we fired them for that reason" (and if they're not earning enough in tips to reach minimum wage, the employee isn't going to have much of a bargaining chip).
  13. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 30, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) The arbitration hearing wouldn't have happened until February, and if he wasn't 100% healthy by then he wouldn't have gotten $15 million. Plus, the Sox could have filed a grievance against Maggs/Boras for withholding information. If the Sox had offered arbitration, they'd have been on the hook for at the very minimum $11.2 million, which would be 80% of his previous year's salary. And they'd have had to submit that number in January or beforehand, and then they'd have to go before an arbitrator and argue the pretty much unprecedented case of having to substantially decrease the salary of the guy based on medical reports. Really, it would have been a mess had they even tried that, and they probably would have lost. Whatever the number they submitted, he would have gotten close to $15 million if the Sox offered arbitration and he accepted. No reasonable management team would have offered arb without a chance to examine his condition following an overseas experimental surgery first.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 30, 2012 -> 10:37 AM) It is true. Seems like it might well be difficult to enforce though?
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 30, 2012 -> 10:31 AM) I'd bet on Sale hitting a dead arm period. But again, the only way to get him ready for the next run is to push him. I disagree a little...I think he's going to hit a dead arm period too, but I think the best way to handle that is to build in some extra rest. Use Mr. "Offday" once a month for him in June/July/August/September, he'll still push 150+ innings if he's healthy, and that might keep him fresher late in the season. And perhaps most importantly, it could avoid having him feeling sore/tired when the Sox happen to have a double header, as we already saw this season. (That won't happen of course, not our style, but that's how I'd do it).
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 30, 2012 -> 10:29 AM) It worked out for both parties. There's no reason to abhor Magglio. He was fun as hell to watch. I don't know that I "abhor" him any more (unless he wasn't clean), but I'm still annoyed at how his side handled that situation. Throw in Crede's health issues and how the same management handled that, and there's reason to be particularly annoyed with that agent.
  17. Congrats Tennessee, you're one step closer to making Islam illegal.
  18. Oh my God there's a thread that got through 3 posts without Steve pissing someone off!
  19. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ May 30, 2012 -> 02:18 AM) The artist formally known as Artest? Kinda kidding, a Pau/Metta for Boozer/Deng does match salary wise and makes sense for the Lakers tho. Same could be said for expiring contract like Richard Jefferson, Hedu, or somethin like Boozer/Brewer for Marion/Odom I'd actually really like that last idea, get the # 17 pick out of them too, even if it means giving up a Omer. Trade Deng/Watson/future picks for Pau trade Korver for another pick (for sake of argument lets say one of bostons 1st rounders, #23) Use the MLE on Hinrich Going off this draft I'm looking at they can then go... SG Doron Lamb Kentucky at #17 PG Marcus Teague Kentucky or C Fab Melo Cuse at $23 C Henry Sims Georgetown or PG Scott Machado Iona at #29 This gives you Hinrich/Teague (Hinrich gets to mentor another Teague) Rip/Lamb/Butler Marion/Butler/Odom Pau/Taj/Odom Noah/Sims/Yaj somethin like that or do you huys think the amnesty of Boozer would save them enough money to sign Nicolus Batum?? If the Bulls use their full MLE on someone like Hinrich, they couldn't possibly sign anyone else. OTOH, if the Bulls used a combination of amnestititizng and trades to get under the cap, they woudln't have the full MLE available.
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 29, 2012 -> 11:50 PM) Thing is the Spurs are kinda beating the Thunder at their own game. The Thunder usually can overwhelm you with their athleticism, speed, etc. The Spurs have all that and are deeper. If the Spurs win game 3 a sweep, IMO, is imminent. The series isn't joined until we get a game in OKC. Yeah, if the Spurs win game 3 it's over, that's obvious, but this will be the best challenge the Spurs get, on the road against a very good Thunder team.
  21. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 30, 2012 -> 07:34 AM) I always thought they should have called his bluff and offered him the arbitration. They should have known he'd never accept. If his knee was truly F***ed to the point where he might never play again, the Sox would have been on the hook for $15 million in 2005. They woudln't have been able to do any of the moves they made (signing Dye, El Duque, etc.). That's why it was such a big deal for the Sox to have at least the same chance the Tigers got to actually examine his knee, and why it was so frustrating that he/Boras refused.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 29, 2012 -> 10:18 PM) Mitchell back up to .295. 2/3 HR, 2 RBI's 4 HR, 33 RBI's on the season, hitting 2nd now in the line-up. WHERE DOES HE PLAY, haha? Axelrod got hit hard tonight, but overall ERA still 2.36, which is great. Our old friend Nick Blackburn starting...sporting a 7.36 ERA Sean Burroughs, Valencia, Parmalee and Clete Thomas the only familiar names on that roster. Hypothetically, the track for Mitchell could involve AAA next year, and then if everything goes well, big leagues if someone gets hurt or in 2014...which is the last year for Dunn's contract and Rios's contract, so it is at least plausible that one of them could be moved to create a spot for him, assuming things keep going. Then again, what's more likely, him sitting in AA-AAA or KW realizing he's an asset and moving him?
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 30, 2012 -> 12:41 AM) And my Ozzie posts are always in response to people who blast Ozzie. I don't bring up the topic. i stand up for the man. If the season ended today he and Robin would be likely candidates for NL and AL manager of the year. If the season ended today Robin would have a shot and Ozzie would come in 3rd or 4th. Washington, St. Louis, LA.
