NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Jul 12, 2010 -> 10:20 AM) Personally, I don't think it will happen. The team is looking like if it does have any depth that it won't be good depth. The chances of all 3 playing 82 games (as stated in another post from someone forecasting) is slim to no f'ing chance with the minutes it looks like they will be playing. The Bulls had great players but also had outstanding depth and a ridiculous defense which the Heat will not have But hey, that's just me As I said when we first broached the subject...I think the only thing that would prevent them from 70 is the fact that they don't have anyone to push them past 60 wins. Esp. with Kobe's finger and Bynum's knee, the Magic aren't going to push well past 60, the Lakers won't, the Celtics won't, the Bulls won't, the Hawks won't. They'll have home court wrapped up by 70 or so games left, and I think they'll probably default to resting their guys for 10+ games rather than pushing for 70. Or at least I guess I hope so.

The environment thread
Just a random note...I'd like to say how amazed I was over the weekend at how press reports gobbled up the idea that after removing the last cap, the fact that oil was now leaking uncontrolled from the well was suddenly a big deal again. Really, no it wasn't, it's the difference between maybe 40,000 barrels leaking a day and 60,000 barrels a day. Either way, the number leaking was still monstrous and the fact that the leak was somewhat larger without the cap isn't as big of a deal as the fact that there's been a monstrous amount pouring in every day.

All-Star Break Standings Importance
QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 08:35 PM) Well Detroit's is brutal, they still have Texas (5), Tampa Bay (7), Boston (3), LAA (3), and NY (4). That is 22 games out of the Division vs winning teams all in the hunt. Minnesota's is more like ours, which is why it is nice that we have a few games on them. They only have Tampa Bay (4), LAA (3), and Texas (7). 14 games. Dont' the Sox have lots remaining with both teams?

We had this discussion a few days ago with poeple saying that whatever the basketball version of WAR was said that the Heat weren't yet a 50 win team with these 3 guys. Here's a roundup of the various other models, click through to this link to see the full set of links.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 09:29 PM) Morneau supposedly had 2 concussions playing hockey, and he suffered another concussion a few years ago when he was drilled in the head with a pitch in Seattle Has Morneau switched himself to the supposedly awkward looking larger, better protecting helmet yet? If not, is he crazy?

YOUR FIRST PLACE CHICAGO WHITE SOX!!!

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 06:14 PM) Morneau might not play in the ASG. Maybe Paulie can get in? They'll most likely take Youk, but we can hope. Twins just made it official, Morneau heading to Minnesota for treatment.

Man, the Twins have fallen off a cliff this week.

Financial News
Wow, while I've been on roller coasters, the AEI started publishing writings about the danger of looming deflation. Either the world's gone completely crazy and left is again right, or they think there's a real chance of a long period of deflation and they didn't want to be caught without having said it.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 05:57 PM) Doesn't it not matter? I thought coach's contracts were guaranteed? Yeah, but you can have things like escalator clauses if they're fired without cause or something like that. Hell, he took a salary cut along with a good chunk of their front office in 2009 to avoid front office staff layoffs.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 05:56 PM) chris Broussard - Knicks Prez Donnie Walsh told me today that Isiah Thomas will be among Knicks GM candidates if they make a hire LMAO. Good luck Knicks. I think Chris Broussard decided he was correct on the Heat stuff so he never needs to be correct about anything again, so he's just going to make stuff up.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 05:46 PM) What about dealin for Lilly...I am sure he wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.... Lilly in the Cell in the summer would be like Lilly at Wrigley with the wind blowing out. The bigger the OF, the more effective he'll be.

Cliff Lee Traded to Rangers
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:08 PM) Yankees likely won't find too many people outside of NY feeling bad for them, I would imagine that extends to other teams, do this to another team, might have hurt future deals, to the NYY with their payroll other teams can't even sniff, it will probably slide If the Rangers have value, teams aren't going to not trade with them out of spite. If they offered up King Felix tomorrow, would the Yanks not offer up everything and their grandmother on the first call?

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 10:57 AM) I just asked a question, I didn't make a statement, Strange. NSS was right with what I was trying to ask. If anyone "KNOWS" the answer to that, they're wrong, because I don't think anyone clearly knows the answer to that. I think at its basic element creationism and evolution could go back to the same point. If science "proves" something, great. However, at its base, something that bases a requirement of a hypothesis as X,Y,Z are not true, so AA must be true does require some sort of a leap of faith that something else isn't out therer that's unproven. Right? (Again, I'm asking, not stating). In its purest form, you can still express legitimate scientific doubt that if you drop a rock from the ceiling of a building it will fall downwards. I could postulate that tomorrow the constant G will suddenly become negative G, and as such gravity throughout the universe will invert momentarily. How would you argue against that? You'd argue against it with evidence. We have no theory that would lead to such behavior, we have plenty of evidence that it won't happen. Furthermore, it's testable; if a lawsuit gets filed against me by the guy who was hit in the head with the rock, I've falsified that hypothesis. Alternatively...for a Creation myth...neither of those are the case. You have neither the ability to offer up a testable hypothesis, because a creator of mythic ability could do anything it wants. So therefore, falsification and hypothesis testing is fundamentally impossible, because even if you falsify someone's hypothesis, you can get around it by saying that it's just the creator's will. Furthermore, you can not make an inductive/evidence based argument in favor or against a creation hypothesis, because you can always postulate that you don't understand the creator's motivation.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 01:47 AM) Why? If JR is willing to pay the luxury tax, then why does it matter? The NBA rewards teams for signing bad contracts. I see no reason not to use all of our cap space. Worst case scenario, the expiring contracts will help us down the road. JR's clear statement has been that he is not willing to pay the luxury tax for a team that can't win a title. This team can not win a title. This team might contend for a title if you swapped Luol Deng for Kevin Durant and someone from Miami gets hurt. JR won't pay the luxury tax for this. Nor should he. If he decided to pay $20 million over the tax level, he still wouldn't be able to field a team by 2011 that could beat the heat.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 11:32 AM) The most hated team in recent sports history becomes just a little more hated. Read more: http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives.../#ixzz0tIHryCug What a f***ing shock. LOL, they've already started the clock haven't they. Does Spoelstra have a heavy buyout or something that gets him a lot of money if Riley wants the job?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) They traded some first and second round picks as far out as 2015. I did not know that was even allowed. The Knicks were trading the 2010 first round pick in like 2003.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 10:56 PM) Not to mention dumping as much salary and obligation as possible on to Miami OTOH, he'd be giving more money to LBJ again. And he's done so many crazy things to help Lebron build his brand (one radio example today was the Cavs wearing a set of jerseys in the playoffs this year that drew a fine because Lebron's team wanted to wear a certain color of shoes for marketing purposes).

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 10:26 PM) I've heard they're going to get Fisher, Ilgauskas, Q. Richardson, Dooling, Raja Bell, Kwame The concept that this team would struggle to fill the role player spots was silly.

QUOTE (Felix @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 10:26 PM) I think we'd probably have to throw in Randy Williams. I can't see the Marlins saying no to that deal, as constructed. Only if they included Mike Stanton. I hear he's supposed to be a solid relief pitcher.

July White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 08:39 PM) To be fair, that happened at about the winter meetings... Seriously, no one thought they'd be this bad. Markakis, Jones, their young pitchers, Wieters...they have guys who were supposed to perform a lot better than this.

The Dan Hudson Era Begins
QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) Aha! Maybe next time, before I post, I better check my facts, an not rely on my brain. through WIKIPEDIA, I found who I was thinking about Muñoz made his major league debut in 2004 for the Chicago White Sox in a start against the Montreal Expos.[1] It was a disaster: Munoz allowed eleven runs in three innings -- nine in the second inning alone -- for the worst major-league debut for a pitcher since at least the last half-century You're thinking of the Neal Cotts game against the Yankees. Check Cotts's ML Debut.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 09:29 PM) Looks like Riley might be doing a sign and trade for LeBron and will be retaining Udonis Haslem as well. Pat Riley must have mafia ties or something. If he could get a couple draft picks out of this I wouldn't blame him at all. On a different subject, I'm not sure what Michael Symon does better after tonight...cooking, or calling in from Vegas to a Cleveland sportstation to rant about Lebron.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 09:31 PM) how was the sox game? good luck? they won the 4 HR game on Monday. The Sox haven't lost a game that I've personally been at in just about a decade I think. If DV's career goes anywhere, I was in the audience for his first HR.
