Did Cubs throw the 1918 World Series?
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Apr 14, 2011 -> 08:54 PM) Great question. It would be silly to think that this doesn't happen today, as greed is timeless. I've had the impression that Jay Cutler has thrown a few games so far here....or maybe he's just that bad sometimes. Not saying Cutler or other players simply place bets, but I think something far bigger than the players goes on sometimes. Anytime somebody powerful gets dirt on a player there is potential for blackmail. People think Pete Rose was as bad as it can get but I think it's far worse to have somebody forcing you to tank a game. I'm confident that games are set up fairly regularly in the NBA.

It can...
QUOTE (hi8is @ Apr 14, 2011 -> 12:59 PM) I'm not so sure of this. Rios will be hitting better than he has thus far. AJ also falls into this category. Another variable is that Dunn has not contributed to our offensive statistics during a portion of the first 12 games. Pierre, Konerko, Carlos, and Alexi should see a drop off of varrying degrees but those who are off to slower starts will pick up as well. It may just be the case this year that our offense is at the top of the majors at the dish this season. I also expect our starters to continue doing this well - maybe with a slight increase in WHIP. Once the bullpen gets on track - well be ready to roll out some nice winning streaks. I'm also booking a nice shot in the arm with Peavy coming in May and Humber taking over for Pena. As bad as it's looked thus far - sifting through the ugliness... There is a lot to be happy about for the 2011 Sox I can't argue with that last sentence at all. It's especially nice to know that closers are also available if none of ours work out.

2011 Films Thread
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 14, 2011 -> 01:05 PM) Making your way through the Universal horror archives — I like it. Bride of Frankenstein is my favorite of the classics (as it is most people's I think), with Dracula a close second. Now, for a real treat if you haven't seen it, seek out the Spanish-language/Spanish cast version of Dracula that starred Carlos Villarias and was shot at night on the same sets as the Browning/Legosi version. I have it on the Dracula 75th anniversary set that came out a few years back. It is excellent. I have seen Man of a Thousand Faces, but it was at least 20 years ago. I recall liking it and not being too bothered with historic inauthenticity plus Thurston Howell III was in it, so what's not to like? On the subject of historic horror biopics, where do you stand on Shadow of the Vampire (Yes, I do know Max Schreck wasn't actually a vampyr) and Gods and Monsters? I think they are both excellent. I really liked Gods and Monsters, loved Shadow of the Vampire.

2011 White Sox closer
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2011 -> 10:40 AM) I wouldn't cut him, but I have no problem with him becoming the long reliever. Isn't that what he already is supposed to be?

2011 White Sox closer
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 14, 2011 -> 09:44 AM) I think you have to go with Santos at this point. He's been our best reliever so far this season and he should be our long term answer anyways. Once Peavy comes back, I'd DFA Pena, call up Infante, and move Humber back to long relief. I think Infante is going to be a huge factor for us at some point this season. With those moves along with Santos as closer, I believe our bullpen comes together quite nicely. Obviously everything is dependent on Santos. I agree that Pena needs to go. He's an abject failure. And this is coming from a guy who defended him. He's the prototypical pitcher with tons of talent that never translates. He'd be the perfect guy to throw to the dogs to both rid ourselves of his lack of production and send a clear message to the other relievers. And before some jagoff makes a smartass remark like "yeah, its a great idea to DFA a guy because of three appearances", he's been this way during his entire tenure with the Sox.

QUOTE (since56 @ Apr 14, 2011 -> 07:48 AM) I wonder what Bobby Jenks is thinking? "The pizza here in Boston sucks. I need better pizza to sustain my fat, disgusting self. Oh man, I'm a gross piece of crap. Where did that beer go?" Something like that.

Everyone loves it but me
QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 10:50 PM) I pretty much hate everything, and it's getting a hell of a lot worse as I get older. I will straight write a person off for watching Jersey Shore or pretty much any other reality TV show. If there's a bigger curmudgeon than me on this site, then I'd like to meet him/her, because we're probably soul mates. Hello.

I dislike Ozzie, but there is no way he should be blamed for the recent struggles. These relievers have been hilariously bad and there's nothing a manager could do. But no matter whose fault it is, both the GM and manager need to be let go if the team doesn't make the postseason.

It'll Take a Brave Manager to Change Mindset on Starters
QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 07:12 PM) 11 games. Obviously, enough sample size. No matter what, it's always a gut reaction on this site, isn't it? The same problem could happen in every game and when someone points it out, others will say that it's being based on the most recent set of games.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 08:25 PM) Haha I was totally running a scenario through my head where I told him I felt like he was Whitney Houston and I was his bodyguard. And he woulda been like "That was Kevin Costner" and I woulda been all "Yeah I know, but that's still what this feels like." Seriously wite, when you open the door for him and he says thanks, you better say "I'm your huckleberry." If you don't, I swear I will hunt you down.

I just wonder what the hell we're going to do if (when?) Santos and Crain fail as closer, too.

It'll Take a Brave Manager to Change Mindset on Starters
QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 05:21 PM) THIS. They're too good and have had too many bloop hits fall in late innings. Plus, if you're a believer like I am still in this pen, at least the struggles might be out of the way early as opposed to say September. We also say this every season. "We're getting our troubles out of the way now, so we will have all of the kinks worked out by the end of the year." And then we always play terribly and stumble in August and/or September.

It'll Take a Brave Manager to Change Mindset on Starters
QUOTE (ptatc @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) You're going to need the pen at some point. You've got to try to work them through problems. Letting them sit on the bench will not help them improve. You might as well try it now because if the pen is bad, the season is over. The starters can't complete every game. Actually, there is a theory out there that Picasso did leave some of his work to be finished by others, A child of his i believe. This is the problem with the Sox. The bullpen is bad now, bad enough to screw the team even though the offense and starters are clicking. Soon enough, the bullpen will get hot, but the starters or the offense will then be so bad that they will become as insurmountable as the bullpen is now.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 01:13 PM) I liked Sports Show, but his Blake Griffin skit was kind of lame. The Tiger Woods thing was hilarious. That's what I meant. Those skits are probably gonna be the worst part.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 04:11 PM) I foresee Kenny having to procure bullpen help by the deadline. Uggh... He will probably have to get more than one reliever, at that. I fear Thornton's one trick pony show is over.

2005 title the only one in the last 15 years "untainted'
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 03:32 PM) I don't think he did, but it is certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. Everyone has to be looked at with a skeptical eye, and that's unfortunate. But that's what happens when steroids hits a game like it did baseball. I honestly think there's no way he didn't.

2005 title the only one in the last 15 years "untainted'
QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 02:36 PM) OK - I went down the rabbit hole for a little while with the google advanced search. And now I forget what I read about the roids issue (was a pretty hot topic a few years ago), but I didn't make a Manny alegation that I was able to find. Milkman and Steff did have a little fight in regard to ARow. Started slow, ended with Steff calling Milkman a douche. I will have to remember not to use google adv search again as it would lead to hours of unproductivity. Clearly I lost that argument.

Evaluating series wins/losses/ties
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) This tends to happen more when you've got a lot of leads, obviously. I don't think that's a good way of judging goodness/badness, as you're punishing a good thing. Now, it would be great if we could keep late leads. That's super-frustrating. We might be about to see it again.
