Walker May Retire -- according to the Sun Times
Milkman delivers replied to shago's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Real @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 09:40 AM) hitting coaches matter. ask rudy jaramillo, oh wait. Congratulations! You're the 100th person to make that joke in one day! -
QUOTE (gatnom @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 10:53 PM) Basically reposting what I said in the Daniel Hudson thread a few days ago: unlike NorthSideSox, I really do not like how this team is positioned for 2011. By my conservative estimate (Kalapse or somebody else more familiar with contracts around the league could give a more accurate one), we have roughly $85 million invested in 14 players, and those 14 players do not include our first baseman (and best offensive player for that matter), catcher, designated hitter, closer, right handed set up man, any of the bench, or any of the remaining spots in the pen. Our payroll this year was $99.575 million, and it will likely continue to drop, as it has been, with our ticket sales being even lower than they were last year. This means that we will likely have to unload salary, and the best place to do that is the starting rotation since that is where we have the majority of it tied up. There are a couple problems with this. One, Buehrle and Peavy are pretty much untradeable. Two, if you trade one of Danks or Floyd in order to actually receive value in return, you now have to assume Peavy will not only be 100% healthy for the year but also not underperform like he did in 2010, and you also have to rely on a rookie pitcher without even a full season of professional baseball under his belt. You also have to hope that Edwin Jackson pitches closer to the 3.25 era that he has with the Sox than the 4.65 he has pitched over his career. And, if any of these conditions don't work out, we don't have any pitching prospects anywhere near the majors who can fill a spot in the rotation. KW is definitely going to have to get creative this year, should be an interesting offseason. It's looking very bleak indeed.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 09:57 AM) Gemma hinted at a possible retirement home in last night's episode. Old Hal might be good, but that storyline seems to have little left. Come on, we're both huge fans of the show. We both know that you never have any idea what is going to happen next.

QUOTE (The Gooch @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 12:26 AM) Godfather 2 > Godfather Agreed. QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 10:59 PM) Why even compare them? Totally different kinds of movies. I didn't make the original comparison. But even though they are entirely different movies, one can obviously be better than the other. In this case, the better movie is The Godfather.

Someone better be writing the screenplay tonight

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 09:46 AM) I f***ing hate Oliver Platt. Haha, a few posters and I had a discussion in the Films Thread a few weeks ago in which we said the exact opposite. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 22, 2010 -> 09:40 AM) I just came here to post that, he was fantastic. Hopefully we can put the Gemma-daddy storyline behind us and get to Ireland for some ass-kicking. Why not both? Hal Holbrook is way too good of an actor to waste him on 3 episodes with a total screen time of about 15 minutes.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 08:53 PM) Inception is a movie you should've seen at the theater. It was friggin great. That may well be the case, but there is absolutely no way it was better than The Godfather.

Mustache party coming up for me. I'm very excited.

I've noticed that they are using a lot of the actors from Deadwood in Sons Of Anarchy. Dayton Callie, Titus Welliver , Robin Weigert, and Paula Malcomson have all appeared in both.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 08:10 PM) Citizen Kane was overrated. Inception > Godfather > Casino Royale > The Dark Knight >>>>>>>>>>>>>>Batman Returns > Citizen Kane. I've never seen Inception (and people making ridiculous statements like this is the reason I'm waiting until it's out on DVD), but that just isn't true.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 12:21 PM) Frankly...I'm not sure that's a terrible idea. Maybe he doesn't need to be baby-sitting them when they go out...but taking steps to make sure that they take a cab, like say...making sure they have the numbers of a cab company, making sure to remind them, or possibly even arranging transportation for a group beforehand...might not be terrible plans. Holy s***, dude. They're grown men. You know what else would be a good idea? They should all take a big yellow bus wherever they go outside of games, hold hands while walking through crowds, and have a parent with them at all times to constantly count heads.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 10:36 PM) Jupiter is visible tonight, and probably tomorrownight, to the left of the moon. You can't miss it, it's really bright like Venus and there's nothing else in the vicinity that's as bright. I went out and looked because I saw your post. Pretty cool, looked like a really bright star.

QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 05:24 PM) I'm sure that Milkman has seen his fair share of cougars. I can never see enough. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 05:28 PM) In recorded history in North America (recorded meaning, like, the past couple hundred years, reliably recorded), there has been either zero or one wolf predations of humans. There was a case in northern Canada some time back, a teenage boy walking home from work at night disappeared. The body was found having been bitten up by wolves, but they don't know if that's what killed him. That's it, ever, on this continent, in modern times. The list of animals more likely to kill you includes raccoons, for example, via rabies. Wolves, as a general rule, don't attack people. I'm sure it will happen some day, but it will be the definition of an aberration. That won't stop some people from wanting to go out and kill all of them, of course. Wow, that is news to me. Cool to know.

I honestly wouldn't mind if they brought Freddy back. He was all you could as for out of the 5th starter slot for the majority of the year. That's probably all we'll need out of him next year with Sale waiting in the wings. Plus, he'll be able to build on the amount of innings he threw this year, as he was hurt and pitched so few innings for the previous couple of years.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 01:57 PM) It's obvious he wants the Florida job and many of you will get your wish for a new manager. It's actually a good way for Ozzie to come back someday. Take another job now, turn Florida into a perennial playoff team, then come back to Chicago again when he needs a dose of hero worship at age 55 or so.. If he stays here much longer he will get fired as all managers are hired to be fired. Only way to come back to Chicago will be to take another job then come back again someday. It'll be tough to come back to the Sox some day if he's fired by the Sox now. He'll enjoy the Florida weather much. It's weird he wants to manage NL type baseball so much since he played for the Sox for so long in the AL. I wonder who gets the Sox job: LaRussa or Torre? The same way he did with the Sox?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 11:39 AM) get used to seeing Coyote in the Chicago area, even the city. They've been adapting quickly here and moving in all over the place. And now, we had our first Wolf sighting in Illinois a few months back, as the packs in Wisconsin continue to thrive and push south. People are already in a panic about coyote in some of the suburbs (with, mostly, no good cause to be), wolves will increase that tension a lot (again, without any good reason, in terms of human safety). I really don't think I'll ever see a coyote where I live. Someone saw a raccoon a few years ago, and it was the talk of the town.

Post your faves yo! I saw the thread title and came here to post Jurassic Park. You bastard, you led with it. That being said, here's a good one. I'm not sure if that's the one, as I keep my work computer muted, but The Departed trailer with Gimme Shelter playing is definitely one of the best ones I've ever seen.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 07:39 PM) First he disses the fans and now he s***s on Nancy Faust. Why do people love this guy so much? He's not even a good manager. Why did he say that? I mean, it's completely unnecessary. It's Faust's appreciation day, and he goes and says something like that?

Just keep losing. If you can't win it, lose as much as possible.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 12:01 PM) This year, the team will apologize to the crowd in unison. Nice. I saw the thread title and came in to post something along those lines, but I can't top that.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) I will argue this. Manny has given Konerko protection in the lineup. He's been our second most competent hitter over the past 2 weeks. His approach is the 2nd greatest behind Konerko. He has taken walks when the opposition has given them to him. He has gone the opposite way when that's what he's been given. He's struck out, for the most part, at swinging at pitches in his zone. As Ozzie said, you're expecting way too much of Manny. He was never going to be a saviour. In baseball, there is no such thing. Amazing pitchers can only pitch once out of every 5 games. Amazing hitters need other amazing hitters for protection and to drive them in or to give them RBI opportunities. Last, but not least, remember that Manny was injured for a good chunk of the season. He has to get him timing down on those inside pitches. I'm not excusing him from anything, but I'm not going to blindly place the blame on him because he hasn't gone on a Dodger streak yet. He has been the 2nd least of our problems. Sadly, that's basically the reason we picked him up.
