  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 03:07 AM) Sliding is a talent, and if it's his craftiness that has increased his stolen base percentage, than that's to his credit and shouldn't be taken away from him. And, while his OBP is higher due to a career high in his HBP, his BABIP is also 25 points lower than his career average. Some of that is correlated to USCF not being a great park to hit for average, but part of it is attributable to bad luck as well. Juan Pierre isn't a great player, but really, he's been everything the Sox could have asked for and he's been a good player. He'd be better suited hitting 9th than 1st, but he's almost positively going to be worth what the Sox are paying him overall, he's almost certainly going to be worth his salary next season ($5 mill), and he fills a spot in the lineup and brings a different offensive dimension to the club, for whatever that is worth. I think it's more likely that he ends up putting up something closer what he did in his first 2 years in LA next season - .290/.330/.345/.675 with great defense - which will probably end up being worth about 1.5 WAR, give or take based on his defensive performance of course (but it should be good), and he'll be a positive contributing member to the White Sox 2011 team. And I'm not sure any of us have seen enough of his career to know if that's something he's always done, and not just a way to compensate for a loss of speed.
  2. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 19, 2010 -> 03:45 AM) Since taking the Cards job in winning seasons: 1996 September: 17-9 1998 September: 18-7 2000 September: 19-9 2001 September: 17-5 2002 September: 21-6 2003 September: 13-13 2004 September: 16-12 2005 September: 13-13 2006 September: 12-16 (there's one fade) 2008 September: 12-13 (there's another) 2009 September: 13-13 Not sure if August counts as the "stretch run" but the August numbers are even more impressive. I don't know how "usually" gets to mean "always" so I guess I'll have to add that to the dictionary, but on winning seasons, in September, he USUALLY gets his team to play .500 or better. (and I don't know how .500 ball in September is a bad thing) Doesn't seem to bother a team who has been to the WS twice in the last decade (won one), a championship series five times and a divisional series seven times. I should tell you off like I did to my boy J4L (in a playful way) but you get no such love.. or respect from me. Another thing to wonder is if the Cardinals had already wrapped up their division by the time September rolled around.
  3. QUOTE (Nokona @ Sep 19, 2010 -> 01:03 AM) Or do. whatever.
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:13 PM) I always say OPS, as in the three letters. Same with OBP, but for SLG, I just say slugging or slugging%. As for the even more advanced stuff, I'll say stuff like UZR, cause that sounds like the three letters stand for something. For things like wOBA and WAR, I say the whole word out. All of this, except I say On Base Percentage (not OBP).
  5. QUOTE (IceCreamPants @ Sep 19, 2010 -> 07:55 AM) Absolutely loved the Town and I really cant even tolerate Affleck as an actor under any circumstance but he pulled this one off pretty well. Favorite scene is when he went into the Florists place after the final s*** went down. Ten years ago I never would believe this, but I'm starting to like Affleck more than Damon.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) Odd, lots of films are made in New Mexico, perhaps the barren landscape can create an equally eerie atmosphere. I'll read some reviews and maybe I'll see this in a year. I imagine I'll just get frustrated though because I get a lot more annoyed with kid actors in English films because I have to pay more attention to their words pitch and delivery. That could be, but the atmosphere from the original movie was, to me, the single most important aspect of it. I love when the setting of a movie becomes a character. I'm not sure if anyone here has seen 30 Days Of Night, but the setting was pretty similar and was probably the biggest reason I enjoyed the movie so much.
  7. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a fox, unless they have them in a zoo somewhere and I saw it a long time ago. I have had that reaction to seeing a coyote, though. When I was living in Massachusetts, I was driving down one of those streets with no lighting at night, and running right along the side of my car was a coyote. I had never seen one in person before, but it was definitely not a dog. After looking up more pictures of them and ensuring that they existed in that area (which a friend of mine absolutely would not believe), I was confident that it was a coyote.
  8. I'd have to say my main hobby is doing crossword puzzles. Collecting music (and listening to it, obviously) is another big one. I download just about any song I've ever heard, even if I don't like it. I listen to music all the time...not sure how I could even live without music. I also enjoy doing smaller maintenance work around my house and my parents' house.
  9. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 01:01 AM) I'm guessing the Chihuahua one is Taco Bell, but what is the Trojan one?
  10. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) So? No doubt they are the better team this year. Show me where I ever denied that. But I refuse to slobber all over them for repeatedly drilling the Sox' hitters, high fiving their thug after his thuggish behavior cost them a run and an out when he got a cheap shot into AJ's face to send the Sox a message, and especially after hitting Paulie in the face and then hitting Pierre later in the game even after warnings were issued. A sore loser would whine about losing or not making the playoffs because of something they falsely perceived as unfair -- you know, like the Twins fans and many in their organization did in 2008. I readily admit they beat the Sox and earned the 2010 AL Central title. But I'm not going to fawn all over them on a White Sox message board or root for them in the playoffs. I hope the Yankees/Rays sweep 'em. Blame that on our team being a bunch of p*****s and not retaliating.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 03:54 PM) Could he have possibly done that because of the endless amount of s*** he took when he did retaliate? He's apparently just always wrong no matter what the decision these days. A contrarian view from Jenksy Cat suggesting that everyone else is always wrong? Now I've seen it all.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:38 AM) Yeah that was awesome. Renner was fantastic and very convincing as the local thug. And watching Affleck's films makes me wish that there was a young hot shot director from Chicago that filmed in the gritty streets of Chicago. It seems like most films in Chicago almost try to hide the fact that the film is in Chicago whereas Affleck embraces Boston. Yeah, he does and it's pretty cool. I recognized so many of the locations in the movie. I drove past the gravel place (the place where he worked) every single day when I lived there, and I've been past that bar they met in a few times, but I'm pretty sure that's just an empty building in reality. There were quite a few locations I recognized.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:21 AM) Thoroughly enjoyed The Town. Almost seems like a Bostonized remake of Heat but it was still quite good. And the main actress in it.... I thought it was great. My favorite scene was this: Affleck: I need your help...I can't tell you what it's about, you can never ask me about it later, and we're going to hurt some people. Renner: Whose car we taking?
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 02:54 PM) How old was she? My mom is only 58. She still lives alone and works as a nurse. Oh, much older. She's around 80. It still might be something to look into, though.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) They would pretty much be the same type of managers. I don't see a chance in hell of that actually happening. Don't catchers have a reputation as being the smartest players on the field, as well as good managers? I don't see how they would be too similar, especially since I think Ozzie is the only player to ever be fooled by the hidden ball trick twice.
  16. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) I've been in the group that was hard on Paulie and Thome last year.. Paul Konerko is just amazing, he needs to stay. EDIT: Much respect to Mark Buehrle for retaliation (not sure who's call it was) and going back to the posts from the game thread where some said Mark should have gotten an out before throwing at them or pick Young.. while Young deserved to be beaned, you retaliate first chance you get and Mark did just that, THANK YOU. My inclination is to say that it was Mark's call, as Ozzie has shied away from hitting people in the last few years. I want to use a stronger term than "shied away," but I'll just say it was Mark's call and that's it.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) Really...we've had 3 playoff appearances in the last 10 year period (October 2000 was less than 10 years ago) and 3 in 11 seasons. That's right about average performance overall...and it's generally above where you'd expect the White Sox to wind up based on the total salary output of the team for the last decade. Oh come on. I'll just wait until October 7th and make my post again, then I'll be technically correct. GTFO.
  18. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 11:22 PM) Bulls***. They take cheap shots, throw at batters intentionally, beat s***ty teams on luck and then lose in the first round in the playoffs. If you want to admire a team like that and congratulate them that's fine --but why don't you do it on a Twins board? You couldn't sound like more of a sore loser. This team beats us on a consistent basis and runs this division. They are better than us, and they are run better from top to bottom.
  19. OK, I called and asked my mom exactly what my grandmother had. She said it was just an infection (I asked if it was specifically bacterial and she said yes, but she sounded like she wasn't really sure). But infections can sometimes have that effect on the elderly, apparently.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 11:57 AM) She is actually a ton better. There was a period of time where she thought still lived and worked where she did 30 years ago. Things are a lot better now. There are still some recent memory gaps, but most everything is back to normal, or close to it. No stroke, no Alzheimer, no drug interactions, nothing psychological, they can't find anything. The frustrating part is that we have no idea what happened, well that and the arrogant doctor who thinks we don't deserve the chance to try to find out something. Something extremely similar happened to my grandmother a couple of months ago. I believe it was a bacterial infection or something similar, which apparently can result in older patients believing they are in a specific situation from years before. Give me a minute and I'll find out exactly what she had.
  21. It is a bit disappointing to only have two playoff appearances in ten years. No matter what the team's record was, that really isn't enough appearances.
  22. I watched The Fisher King and Punch-Drunk Love in the last two days. Neither one of them was what I expected...both were a little strange, to be honest. I really liked both of them, and didn't even realize that I watched two relatively serious movies starring comedic actors. Most people (if not all) agree that Robin Williams is a great actor, but I think Adam Sandler really has it in him to be a pretty good one.
  23. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 12:24 AM) I had to split Chinatown viewings over two nights. I'm a tired old man, what can I say? But, damn what a fantastic film that is. Godfather Godfather II good. I think this and Cukoo's Nest have to be without question the defining films of Nicholson's career. You can't forget As Good As It Gets, though. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 07:59 AM) Previews make it look like another The Departed, which was one of the most over-hyped and overrated movies in recent memory (from, IMO, the most overrated director currently making movies). I don't know about Scorsese being overrated, but I see your point. It seems like his movies over the last 20 years have gone downhill. The Departed, as you said, was incredibly overrated. He had about seven other movies that deserved to win Best Picture before it, and I think a lot of people agree that it was more of a make-up call for all of the times that Scorsese was screwed. That being said, it was sort of a down year in terms of Best Picture contenders. Letters From Iwo Jima is the one movie that I can say was definitely better. It also doesn't help that The Departed is a remake of a Japanese (I believe) movie, and was said to be the exact same storyline.
  24. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 01:02 PM) Yeah but do you think we can afford to wait for Viciedo to develop some defensive skills? I don't think so. We want to compete every year. Maybe he'll do better with a team like Cleveland that would give him the time he needs to fully develop. So let's get rid of (likely) our best offensive prospect.
  25. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 11:53 AM) The idea of a "rotating DH" isn't inherently good or bad. Would a rotating DH unit of Pujols and Ryan Howard be good? Yes, it would be great. How about one that features Jim Thome or Aubrey Huff? Excellent. How about one that gives the most at bats to Mark Kotsay? Terrible. It's players that are good or bad. And Ozzie is an idiot for demanding Kotsay be on the team and given those at bats. Like I said, it works in theory.
