August White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 11:11 AM) Is anyone else really getting tired of Hawk as of late? He can't judge the distance of a fly ball at all anymore. Every semi-deep fly ball, he's yelling "stretch, stretch" and then "dagummit". Last night, he was talking so highly of Mauer you'd have thought he was his son. Every time there's a chance that a double play may get broken up and it doesn't he's grouching "dagummit". How did he react to Thome's HR last night? I especially hate the impassioned version of "dagummit." He really yells and stresses the "dag" and quickly mutters the "gummit." DAGgummit

Not having Jenks is killing the Sox
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 12:01 PM) Because those numbers should be nothing but coincidental. L/R splits makes sense. Home/Road splits even mean something to some degree. But Day/Night really doesn't hold any weight. Partiers? Off of the top of my head, that is just one legitimate reason for its validity.

JIM THOME!!!!!!!!
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 11:59 AM) Imagine being at the Sunday game after the ASB. I expected the Sox to blow this somehow. It's like every single game against Minnesota is scripted, and it's like the Sox are playing baseball like it's April and May again, and the Twins are playing like the Sox were in June and July. It's hard to beat a team that is playing that well. (but it's not impossible) Ha, that's perfect.

What Should Be The Next Course of Action For Your White Sox?
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 11:59 AM) That was a dirty play IMO. He didn't try to bowl over AJ to knock the ball out of the mitt so that he could score. He went nowhere near the plate and aggressively shoved AJ in the face. That's bush league. You expect any better from a scumbag like Delmon Young? If the White Sox really want to retaliate, they should just tell the Minneapolis cops about the unregistered gun and/or illegal drugs that he almost certainly has in his car.

Not having Jenks is killing the Sox
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 11:54 AM) Or he's just not stupid enough to put any validity into those stupid stats. Apparently anyone who puts stock in a stat like that is stupid. What exactly is so stupid about it, anyway? It's been shown that certain players perform differently in day and night games.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 10:48 AM) I'm not content...but this is a marathon, not a sprint. I'm too old to live and die with each and every game of a 162 game season. I love watching this team, win or lose, although it's more fun when they win. My point is, why are we talking about blowing up a team and an organization when the 2010 White Sox are OVERACHIEVING! Of course, I want to see them win every year...but that doesn't happen to any team. Ever. I come into every season hoping that the Sox will win the World Series. And at the end of the season, there are always games that you can point to and say, "That was a big win/loss." But to praise and/or rip this team daily is just going to give you unneeded stress. It's a game. It's fun. It's icing on the cake of life. 2005 was a fantastic year. I'll never forget it. But so was '85, '91-'93, '96-'98 and '09-'10. But in the grand scheme...I'll take my wedding and birth of my two kids over any of those. I'm not Kenny Williams, Ozzie Guillen or any member of the White Sox organization...so I have nothing invested in this other than to enjoy the ride. So keep your insults about being a Cub fan. A couple of things: 1.) It's a great thing that you put things in perspective and realize your family is more important than the game, but I'm not sure exactly what that has to do with anything. 2.) It's a message board that we all post on almost daily, of course we're going to discuss/praise/rip them on a daily basis. 3.) This is no shot at you in particular, but I can't stand the line "I'm too old/mature/experienced in life" about not getting too involved emotionally.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 09:09 AM) Ummm...can't we just be happy that this White Sox team is this/close to even being in first? I mean, isn't this a team that most "pundits" and even a good chunk of this board thought would be behind the Twins, Tigers and yes, even the Indians. Some even saw the Royals as above the Sox this year. And now, because of a 25 out of 30 streak, this team made these series important. I know I wouldn't necessarily have thought that at the beginning of the year...and yet here we are. And once again, here we are arguing about what kind of fans Sox fans are. Can't we just enjoy the ride instead of analyzing every single bump or dip in the road? I mean, it's the middle of August and the Sox still have a chance to win the division...isn't that just a little exciting??? No. The expectation every single year (unless your team is rebuilding) is to win and get to the playoffs, not to think it's cute that they JUST missed the playoffs.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 06:47 AM) I often get annoyed when the mood gets very negative on here too, but it's hard to say anything after last night. There were just too many factors to overlook. The division race, the Twins again, the bullpen again, the whole Thome saga. I don't see how you can get on people for reacting to last night's loss. On the bright side, it only counts as one loss. The Sox still have a chance to win two and really nobody expected to win more than one in MN, so if they can can come away with one we still have a race on our hands. That also seems to be the case with the team itself, unfortunately.

Ozzie Guillen
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 08:53 AM) Why exactly do he have a left handed hitter sitting on our bench yesterday who is signed for a couple more years while starting a guy making practically the league minimum with terrible stats for the year? Yeah I know his first 2 ABs were great and he produced but over the long haul he should rarely be playing especially since Teahen is better and we extended the guy. I am dumbfounded why Ozzie is treating Kotsay as if he's some future hall of fame candidate and fan favorite. God forbid we used him as a rare spot starter and left handed pinch hitter like most teams would at this stage in his career. Perhaps most minor league teams. Most major league teams would have already designated him for assignment.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 06:10 AM) Well, considering that we signed Alexei for basically $1.25 million per year, signed Putz for $3 million, signed our 5th starter for $1 million, traded for Quentin, Danks, Floyd, Thornton, developed Buehrle and traded for Konerko early in his development, and drafted Beckham, I'd say we've done pretty well at identifying talent in FA and in other organizations and acquiring it while the costs are low. Personally, I don't care where these players come from, as long as we are identifying talent and acquiring it when it is affordable. Whether we draft these guys ourselves is irrelevant since we have proven we've been able to acquire them using the resources available to us. I'd still take our core and place it against that of most teams. We just need to get it done on the field. We say this an awful lot and it seems to be a problem more often than not. Someone is obviously to blame for this.

Not having Jenks is killing the Sox
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 08:07 AM) Yes, not having a good Jenks is killing the Sox. Not having the bad Jenks...isn't all that different. Once again, since people keep citing this BS stat, I have to point out...Bobby Jenks did not take the blown save in the game against the Twins where the first 5 batters to face him reached. Sergio Santos took the blown save there, but everyone in their right mind could tell that was Bobby's fault. Fantastic post.

JIM THOME!!!!!!!!
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 10:57 PM) He's so unclutch. I really can't understand why the Sox don't dominate the Twins. Gardenhire is so handcuffed. His DH can't play the field. I wonder if the show "The Club" gets Thome's blood moving a little quicker. It always has the JR quote "It doesn't matter what we feel about him, its about winning" in the into. They were talking about him. It is a must the Sox get at least one of the next two. Very good point.

JIM THOME!!!!!!!!
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 10:41 PM) I want to throw up right now. That game was ours for the taking. The f*cking Konerko DP killed our chances to win the game. If you have to rely your setup man to go 3 seperate innings you know your pen is in shambles. The Twins own us and the division. Did anyone else even think for a second that the inning wouldn't end that way? Even with runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, I still felt pretty damn confident that the odds were much more in favor of the Twins getting out of it.

JIM THOME!!!!!!!!
It's going to be hard to explain how not signing Thome and him subsequently signing with the Twins didn't directly affect the outcome of this season. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 10:30 PM) I hate Ozzie Guillen. Maybe he'll get sick of it all and resign. Ditto.

Resenting Football
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 06:04 PM) Of course football fans would argue that "will Brett come back" trumps over everything else in the NFL. Preseason football is lame. There's a debate about extending the season and shortening the preseason which is totally dumb. Football would still be my favorite sport but the product that needs no hype has gotten too over hyped. I've got sort of sick of it. I won't watch a game anymore unless it involves my team. After living in the Midwest so many years, it's hard to waste a Sunday afternoon in the Fall when the weather is so nice outside. Baseball on the other hand is different. You can enjoy an outdoor activity and enjoy a game on the radio. With other sports you can't do this. When the Colts finish their season I don't have near the withdrawal when the Sox season is over. Getting those withdrawals yet?

Ozzie Guillen
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 04:20 PM) So Ozzie at worst is a top 10 manager. Out of the 30 people who are currently acting as a manager in Major League Baseball, sure you can argue that. That doesn't mean there are people who are currently bench coaches, minor league managers, former players not currently doing anything, out-of-work managers, or guys walking down the street who may also be better.

Fishing Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) Could be the way you are reeling it in, or how deep you let it drop before you reel. I have even had people cast for me. The vast majority of the fish I catch are on other people's reels while they're off taking a whiz or something. I'm just a very unlucky fisherman.

Catch All Anything Thread
To anyone who works in Tech support, you are a better person than me. I consider myself to be an extremely patient person (and I believe everyone I know would agree), but I had to just hang up on my mom while talking her through a simple computer procedure. I feel like I might as well have been talking an Alzheimer's patient through brain surgery.

Thanks for breaking everyone's hearts before the 9th
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) Lets get this straight, some of us saying that Jenks has been bad and needs to improve or saying Kotsay is garbage isn't being negative, it's pointing out the blatantly obvious. STOP RIPPING ON JENKS!

Resenting Football
I know the exact feeling. I think the biggest reason football is so much more popular than any other sport is the short attention span of Americans, and more importantly, the American sports fan.

Fishing Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 10:16 AM) Have to know what to cast and where to cast it. I actually love playing guide when I go on canoeing trips now, I don't even do the fishing - I just put someone in the front of the boat who wants to fish, and I show them what to put on the line, take them to a good spot, and show them where and how to cast it. You have to know how to "read" lakes and rivers to find the best spots for what you are looking to catch. No, I mean I'll be fishing off of the same dock as someone else. We'll be using the same bait/lure/weights and cast our lines about five feet apart. The other person will catch fish all day, and I'll maybe get lucky with one.

Minnesota Misconception
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) 1) Because of that dome that they use to play in 2) Because Ozzie respects them too much and the team respects them too much to retaliate (see Torii Hunter/Byrnes or Quentin getting hit on purpose the other day) 3) Because national baseball experts always pick Minnesota to win the division Man, that pissed me off. No retaliation whatsoever.

Ozzie Guillen
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 01:23 PM) God we are starting to sound like Bears fans. There's always something clearly better out there. No manager will ever be good enough. They should just run the team based on fan voting before every game, I think we'd be set then. Funny that you should mention the Bears. Similar to that team, the White Sox and Ozzie will always be defended for a title they won years ago. Ditka is still considered great by idiots all over the city. I wonder how long Ozzie will get the free pass due to 2005?
