QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 04:24 PM) Nice Signing for the Mariners. I always thought Washburn was underrated. He is the better pitcher in comparison to Burnett or anybody else on this market with the exception of Milwood. Yes, but how do you feel about Rex Grossman? sorry for the threadjack lol

QUOTE(VAfan @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 02:03 PM) I've made the point, backed up completely by numbers, that Garland was our second best pitcher last year. And I've refuted the point that, at 26, he's somehow reached the zenith of his career in 2005 and will never be more valuable than he is now. I would not be surprised if he were traded, but I certainly hope the Sox don't just push him out the door by making a lowball offer and then claiming they couldn't sign him. There is such a thing as reading too far in to what others are saying, and I have to say that this is a classic example of that, VAfan. Who said that Jon Garland is at the zenith of his career? Who said that this is as good as he is ever going to be? You keep confusing "We can trade Jon Garland for MAX value right now" with "Jon Garland isnt going to get any better, therefore we must trade him.". Noone said Garland sucks, Noone said Garland isnt going to get any better. What everyone else is doing right now, besides you, is stepping back and realizing that Jon Garland probably doesnt see himself staying with the White Sox past his arbitration years because of a multitude(hawkism!) of reasons, among them being A) the White Sox are not going to be in a position to pay him what he will command in the open market, B ) He is a SoCal native, C) He has been jerked around by the White Sox organization in the past, D) he probably doesnt care for the media perception of him in this town, etc. al. In other words, it probably isnt in the cards. Now the White Sox have to make a business decision and attempt to fortify positions for the future because they have extra pitching right now. This team is damn good, and trading Jon away isnt going to change the face of the team. This isnt to say that something will not be done. KW could be posturing and something could be worked out. But this isnt a likely scenario. While i will be sorry to see Garland go, I will certainly understand his reasoning. You are far too sentimental about holding on to players.

QUOTE(heirdog @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 12:07 PM) I think Dan Kolb would be a nice addition, especially if Hermy is slow to recover from his back. I think Hermy and Politte are solid set-up men but Politte has been inconsistent over the years so if he struggles, we have Kolb who has also closed games in the past. This is the type of reliever that KW went after last year (ones that had closing experience...a sign of mental toughness?) so I could see him calling Kolb's agent. Kolbs mental toughness and closing ability flew out the window on the trip down to Atlanta last year. Maybe Coop could figure him out. Maybe he is Billy Koch redux.

QUOTE(Adam G @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 11:57 AM) Olivo only played 37 games in San Diego last year. Ramon Hernandez is their guy. I'd like to see an offer tendered to Joe Borowski. Hernandez just signed with the Orioles.

I thought Olivo was supposed to be the man in SD? Has he fallen out of favor already?

QUOTE(Ricky3353 @ Dec 20, 2005 -> 10:12 AM) When you hear that Kenny is interested in someone its usually true. A couple years ago, everyone knew that he wanted vizquel and he kept that intrest until he could finally get him. Now he heard Chavez's name come up all the time last year, im sure there is still a strong interest in him. If Anderson or Owens fail, i bet we start hearing Ken Grif Jr rumors again. LMAO, I am sure Kenny has alot of interest in a lot of different players. Did he ever actually acquire Vizquel? Ken Griffey Jr? Eric Chavez?

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 09:42 AM) No prolonged success for any of those. I think it can be argued Nomo had the best run of the bunch, but, you have yet to see any longevity out of any of these Japanese imports. I'm on to something. We're going huge with this idea. This is about to blow up. So be it. Im on the bandwagon now, lol

There was no surprises, the playoff system is there for anyone to see. The bottom line in my league is that it was about fun. There is no pot for the league winner, and this guy already won the only awards that my league had to offer. I had an 8 team playoff because it was about playing for a few more weeks. And I think this has to do with the fact that he lost more than anything. This was an 11-3 #1 seed losing to a 6-8 #8 seed.

Saturday Atlanta Tampa Bay Tennessee Miami San Francisco St. Louis San Diego Kansas City Pittsburgh Cleveland NY Giants Washington Jacksonville Houston Detroit New Orleans Dallas Carolina Buffalo Cincinnati Philadelphia Arizona Oakland Denver Indianapolis Seattle Sunday Chicago Green Bay Minnesota Baltimore Monday New England NY Jets Everyone should get a point for having to choose between Detroit and New Orleans. What a s***ty game to have to choose.

Buster Olneys take http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor...ster&id=2267080 My LOL quote: How does the balance of power shift? Didnt the Yankees win the east last year? Let me pause to consider feeling bad for the Red Sox for getting into their current predicament. Consideration denied. How funny is it that Boston and up until yesterday, New York have considered Corey Patterson as their starting CF? Can you imagine CP delivering one of his patented "Its just a game" statements to the NY or Boston media? He would be ripped in the tabloids until he left.

Not so fast Angus! Color Me Badd has something to say about that!

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Dec 20, 2005 -> 05:53 PM) Regardless, I'm done with the Japanese smoke-and-mirrors pitching experiment. Once these guys are seen by the majority of the league, they're toast in the MLB. I think there have been plenty of Japanese Imports who have excelled for a extended period of time. Hideo Nomo had a pretty consistent career, Kazahiro Sasaki was untouchable until he got injured, then he bolted back to japan, Shigetoshi Hasegawa has had some success, and the guy who was just traded to Texas (okinori?) is supposed to be pretty nasty too. I can understand the smoke and mirrors frustration because of Shingo, but I wouldnt venture to say they are all easy to figure out after they have been seen a few times.

Can anyone tell me what playoff system is employed on your fantasy football league? I have a malcontent on my league who is going crazy because I had an 8 team playoff with no 1st week bye. He was the number one seed and lost to the 8 seed, and the guy is blowing a gasket calling the league unprofessional and such because it doesnt mimic the NFL close enough. Now keep in mind that this is a league that I paid for(60 bucks) and there is no entry fee, so there is no pot. Yet, we had a little mini-bet in the league through the year on rookie contributions, and the same guy won the only monetary award that my league had to offer, which was best buy certificates that i paid for. And I still get complaints.

when does this deal expire? The end of July? August?

I cant wait to read the boston media response to this. You know they will be crying and blaming, thats for sure. edit:LMAO, Kirk Ravitch just referred to the signing in reverence and forever coined it *pause* "The Johnny Damon Signing©"

That girl kind of reminds me of that volleyball player Gabrielle Reece in the way she is built. Most big girls in basketball are husky and stout as well as tall.

I like sports games alot, but I always get this anti-climactic empty feeling when I win a world championship on any sport. This is mostly due to the end-of-game graphics at the end of sports games, which generally consist of pixelated balloons and confetti, with a neat techno beat and the credits running in the middle. I wish there were something I could do about that. -

QUOTE(NYSox35 @ Dec 19, 2005 -> 10:38 AM) How about the intercception? Kyle didn't turn the ball over... I want to say there were two times that the ball was in the defenders hands and they dropped it. Orton was having serious problems with indecision and pressure yesterday, it was obvious. Grossman may have thrown an INT, but he still moved the chains very quickly in that drive. It was a positive drive despite the INT. -
I can admit it. I had this funny notion about continuity and what it means to an NFL offense. I thought to myself "Kyyle23, Grossman really has only had 6 games of experience. What is it about him that makes everyone say 'pull the plug on Orton while this season is still going good!'?"(yes, I really refer to myself as Kyyle23 in the real world. It makes me feel like a double agent ) I didnt know. I fought it. I defended Orton a few times on game threads, but I thought moreso because the team was winning, and to that point he hadnt been hurting the team with his play. Then he steadily started regressing, and you could tell the defensive side of the team, while fantastically adept and strong, could not shoulder the load of the offense too. In Ortons defense, the past 5 games he has faced some very good defenses, in fact most of them top 10 units. But this was a season that couldnt be spoiled by a rookie hitting his wall(and bouncing off of it, hard), when the first choice as a starter was (supposedly)healthy on the bench. Orton was given the shot at keeping his job. I thought this was the correct move, and I think it will go a long way in keeping Orton progressing. Last night my wife asked me if Grossman was coming in at the beginning of the game. I thought that was very odd, she doesnt really like sports at all and she brought it up out of the blue. I said "if Orton does bad, then I think Grossman will come in." After the first series. it was just obvious to me that Grossman was coming in. And I embraced it. This is right. You dont lose your job to injury(unless you are Drew Bledsoe). And I f***ing love Lovie Smith. The guy is not afraid to make a change if something isnt working. And what happens when Grossman comes in? A f***ing 22 yard laserbeam to Muhammed. Hey White Sox Josh, I know you saw that. Now that was a Dan Marino type throw. Grossman eclipsed Ortons entire yard total of the first half, in one throw. So now I will say it. I apologize for defending Ortons right to stay at first string quarterback, I was misguided and didnt know what I was talking about. Grossman is obviously the better product.
