  4. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 20, 2008 -> 03:48 PM) Where's Griffey on the VORP list? Too crappy to be considered (His VORP with the Sox is 0.8, which would be last among those listed)

    i am drunk

    It took me a awhile to find this thread. Too long. Anyways, to my point: Why is Griffey playing? Seriously, can someone answer me this? There is no logical reason why he should be playing. He's terrible offensively and horrible defensively. He can't hit for power any more and can't hit for an average (not that it would mean anything anyway). The fact that BA plays in LF when Griffey is in the game is absolutely sickening, but the fact that BA doesn't play over him in the first place is just as bad. Griffey has been absolutely pathetic since joining the Sox, there are no two ways about it. He's hitting .257/.339/.358 since joining the Sox, and his defense has been pathetic (pretty predictable stuff). For as good a HR hitter as he is, he's had ONE since joining the Sox. By comparison, Brian Anderson has had 2 since the start of August (essentially the same amount of time). Sure, ESPN may hype his experienced nature and people that have half a brain may be touting his gold gloves, but that's all in the past. Right now, he's a horrible overall player that doesn't deserve a minute of playing time on a playoff team. Yeah, he bring the fans into the stadium to potentially hit #610 (which he won't hit this season, I promise), but that's about it. It's absolutely pathetic that he's getting paid more than $10 million a year, he's simply not that good. Really, there's absolutely no logical reason why Griffey should be starting over Anderson. BA is a far, FAR superior fielder and his offense is basically a wash, at worst. He's hitting .234/.272/.444 on the season which isn't great, but really when you're comparing it to Griffey's pathetic line its just as good. Anderson is a far superior defender (as already stated), and when you consider the fact that our pitching is very dependent on our defense, it seems absolutely ridiculous to put out a fielder that has less range than me, let alone BA. Then, when you consider that BA actually has some sort of upside as opposed to a 39-year-old CF that can't hit or play defense, it's really a no-brainer who should be starting. Yes, Griffey was great back in the day. I'm not denying that. However, he has been absolutely abysmal since joining the White Sox and has no reason to still be getting at-bats. Seriously, he's a terrible player and that's it. Don't get fooled by the smoke and mirrors that are ESPN and the Sox PR department. I've been meaning to say this for awhile, but I haven't found the appropriate thread to put it in. Now that I'm drunk, I figure that this is the right thread for it, especially since hardly anyone reads this s*** so its unlikely that the mass number of Griffey homers will come in here and try to discredit me. And no, I'm not saying starting BA tonight would have made a difference. Don't go there. (And yes, it took awhile to type this post with correct spellings; also: this post was promised to the Chat Crew... it was a long time coming)
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) Anderson >>> Owens and Swisher. Anderson >> Griffey QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) Give Dye the night off, and put Anderson in CF and Griffey in RF. Funny. Anderson starting over Griffey in CF when both are in the game will never happen, despite how obvious a decision it is.
  10. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 07:20 AM) Fixed I hate the Twins as much, if not more, than anyone here, but Span has been great this year. I don't think he'll get the same recognition as Alexei or Longoria because he doesn't have the same playing time, but he really has had a hell of a season. For comparisons sake: Span: .295/.384/.433/.817 in 305 AB Alexei: .298/.320/.480/.800 in 440 AB
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 07:48 PM) Thome sucked for a portion of the year and than got his s*** together. Sure his season totals are hovering at one spot, but you can point to a long stretch where he has been quite productive. By "a portion" do you mean May and September? Other than those two months, he's been pretty solid.
  12. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 10:41 AM) I don't give a s*** what the OPS+ or stats say. No one that hits .240 is an above average player, unless of course they hit about 50+ hr's. So Jim Thome has sucked this year?
  13. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 04:20 PM) Ventura >>>> Crede On both sides of the game Duh? Did anyone say different?
  14. Morneau has only had two months where he owned an OPS over .900: May and July. Other than those two months, his season has been good, but not spectacular. He is 9th in the AL in OPS, behind players on other contenders such as Jermaine Dye, Carlos Quentin, and Kevin Youkilis. Even if you want to talk close and late, he's not doing that great among the candidates that are on potential playoff teams: Morneau: .298/.356/.479/.835 Youkilis: .267/.374/.547/.921 Quentin: .351/.448/.757/1.205 Dye: .291/.364/.456/.820
  15. If Morneau wins the MVP, I promise to kill something. He didn't deserve it in 2006, and he doesn't deserve it this year. Other than him, I couldn't care less who wins it. Q deserves it, but this injury probably killed his chances (even though we wouldn't even be in this race without him). Oh, and while Alexei has been great this year, he's the third best offensive option for Rookie of the Year. Both Longoria and Denard Span have been better.
  16. The intro to 'All Along the Watchtower', Hendrix's version.
  17. Why is Griffey batting fourth? (Sorry if this has already been covered, just checking in before I go to work)
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 07:35 PM) Weak offensive performance tonight...someone's going to have to carry this team these last two weeks. It's all about Dewayne Wise
  19. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 12:17 PM) Less opportunity to come back especially in the bottom of the 9th. If you give up three in the top of the 7th you still have 9 outs to come back, not so if you are walked off. I also tend ot beleive that hitters are more focused in the 9th if down by a run or two. I'm not saying you should be using your best reliever when you're up three in the seventh. I'm saying you should use your best reliever in the toughest situations and when the game is truly up in the air. Who cares if its in the ninth or in the seventh? It's absolutely ridiculous when teams opt to save their best reliever for the 9th when the gave is in complete question in the seventh or eighth.
  20. Closer are incredibly overrated. How many other players are glorified for their ability to get three outs without letting up three runs? (and before you say it, no, not every save has a three run lead) The point is that you want your best reliever coming in when the game is in question. Whether that's in the 9th inning when you're up one or whether its in the seventh inning up one with two on and one out, you want your best guy out there. What's the point in saving his arm for the 9th if you aren't going to make it there in the first place?
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 08:59 PM) Another nice 2 out RBI for Uribe. Pull Griffey for Owens. Then put Anderson in CF where he should have been all along.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 08:47 PM) Somebody who knows what they are talking about rate this BA at bat. Thanx He hit a home run. 'Nuff said.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 08:37 PM) What is Ozzie saying? I can't listen cause I'm at work and sound is down. I missed it too. All I heard was one continuous beep. (Not really. He said Paulie would be back for Tuesday, and that they didn't want to risk it earlier given the amount of rain in Chicago. He also said Linebrink is awesome and is a huge help to the bullpen.)
  24. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 08:23 PM) Kenny Rogers, "You can't handle the Fu!" It's not a Fu Manchu. It's a goatee. There's a difference.
