  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:33 PM) Democrats haven't actually pushed radically left, though. Within western democracies, they'd be a center-right party at best. They nominated Hillary Clinton just last year, for christ's sake. Globally, Republicans are a substantial outlier ideologically. There's really not a comparable ideological distribution here. Really, though, whether Democrats have shifted radically left or not is beside the point. The problem is what you're ascribing that shift to. You're trying to blame Democrats for the radicalization of the right and for conservatives backing Donald Trump through the nomination and into the Presidency. Nobody is backing Trump because Democrats called Romney a conservative. Nobody on the left is backing Sanders or Warren or pushing for UHC and expansion of the social safety net because Republicans criticized Kerry or Obama. There are political (economic, religion and race really) undercurrents causing these shifts in the US and abroad, but that isn't what you're arguing. You're arguing that Demcoratic political campaigns against Romney 5 years ago and McCain 9 years ago caused that shift, which is just nonsense. You absolutely discredited yourself with the very first sentence.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:13 PM) Sanders is a New Deal democrat to the (slight) right of most mainstream European parties, and he lost by a few million votes. People who did back Sanders, myself included, didn't do it because Republicans called John Kerry and Barrack Obama extremist liberals. I honestly don't know what sort of mechanism for that happening you're envisioning. edit: Actually, mentioning Europe makes me think it's worthwhile to point out the shifts that are occurring throughout western democracies right now. People aren't voting for right wing nationalism in Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, etc. because Democrats called Mitt Romney a conservative. There are uniquely American aspects to Trump and his rise for sure, but he's also part of a global shift. So it is all coincidence that one party has pushed radically left, but total logic that the other one has pushed radically right, even though the same political undercurrents exist for both. Sure, why not. If that is what it takes.
  3. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:20 PM) Well, they could cut it off at some age (say like, 23 at the oldest). For example, a 27-year old Abreu wouldn't be restricted by it. They already have a set of international rules in place. It wouldn't be that hard to set a hard age and say that until age 21/23/25 plus so many years of professional experience they have to go through the draft. After that point, they would be a true major league free agent. In NBA/NHL, these guys have to declare for the draft, so it is done in other sports.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) Democrats are responsible for conservatives backing Trump through the primaries and in the general election because they called their political opponents too conservative in a political campaign. Republicans are not responsible for their rhetoric that was and remains 100 times worse. For some reason, we haven't seen a comparable radicalization of the Democratic base, but rest assured, whatever happens, conservatives will not be to blame. Yeah it isn't like a socialist almost won their nomination or something...
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:47 PM) The only reason one of them was the "worst candidate in modern history" is the use of a private email server, which was the worst thing ever for 12 months and is again of course ok today. Its not, but OK.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:43 PM) Yeah, because insulting a moderate president and blocking him at every single possible opportunity totally cost the opposing party the election in 2016. I guess that's just one of those things that's ok if you're a Republican. You can call the opposing president Hitler and it helps you win elections because Republicans are ok with that, but god forbid a Democrat points out that the guy literally just defended Nazis. It gave us the two worst political candidates in modern history, you might be OK with that, I am not. But like you said, it is OK when it benefits your guy.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:27 PM) His incompetence and pettiness is getting Americans in Puerto Rico killed right now. He seems bent on provoking NK into a nuclear confrontation. He's constantly diminishing the standing of the US around the world. Why should people stop criticizing him and pointing out his many, many failures only 8 months into a disastrous presidency? To wit: Trump denies Puerto Rico request to let hurricane victims use food stamps for prepared hot meals: report Actually, incompetence is too forgiving. This is malevolence. Um duh. But like I said years ago, when you use this same terminology to describe moderates, it loses all meaning and opens the door for the truly incompetent. Trump just happened to walk in and be the recipient of it. Sadly with the divide still out there, he stands a way too good of a shot at re-election.
  8. Yeah, I am deleting my posts. No interest in rehashing all of that again.
  9. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) It's time to stop ragging on the current President. To borrow from Dennis Green: He is who we thought he was. It's now time to shift the focus to the people who can and should remove him from office. He is unqualified, undignified and ill-prepared. Since there's no where to Peter Principle him up, the only other place to go is out. Time to yell at the House to impeach and remove. And yes, I understand who is next in line and next in line after that. It is precisely that which made this idiot electable from both sides of the aisle.
  10. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:05 PM) I'm not saying that another team could've offered better. I'm saying the 3rd piece from Boston should've been better in order for the trade to be fair value. If no one is willing or able to pay it, how can you call it "fair"?
  11. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 01:59 PM) He's not an international amateur anymore though. He played in the United States last year. It wouldn't really make any sense. If the White Sox decided to release a guy like Josue Guerrero right now he wouldn't be limited to bonus pools. He'd be a free agent. I have no idea what they'll ultimately decide but it's the first time something like this happened. Technically neither were any of the guys that Boston had voided either. They had already signed professional contracts just like Maitan. If Boston had released any of them while they were in the DSL they would have been free agents as well. The fact that they are playing in the DR versus the US has no bearing on that. Does MLB actually recognize the distinction here? I kind of doubt it as neither are union members, which means MLB can do whatever they want to them essentially.
  12. QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 01:54 PM) But at the same time, it harms teams that might have had cap space back then but not now. This a real sticky situation. What's the punishment for giving draft picks illegal incentives. Boston lost all of their signings, didn't get their money back for the signings they lost, couldn't try to sign their voided signings again, and picked up an additional period of being blocked from signing any other players over $300k.
  13. QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 01:44 PM) I feel like playing in the US should basically override that. I get the feeling they want to establish a precedence against this kind of action, but seeing with what they did to Boston, I don't want to see MLB wanting to create an incentive for players to try to get out of their contracts either. Pushing him back into the international pools kind of accomplishes both instead of creating this huge feeding frenzy of complete free agency. It also follows MLB own rules to a T. He isn't old enough, nor is he considered to have enough professional experience to circumvent the rules.
  14. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 01:40 PM) MLB needs an international draft. And make it so the kids have to be at least 18. This so badly. The international system we have now is a joke. Realistically we just need a world wide draft like the NBA and NHL use.
  15. David Just‏Verified account @davidjustCST 2h2 hours ago Guaranteed Rate Field has the best Food & Drink in MLB, according to 130k social media reviews compiled by @reviewtrackers.
  16. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 12:29 PM) If he were declared a free agent, I'm assuming teams would sign him to minor league free agent deals, but how do those deals work? Is it the same as an international contract where all the money is in bonuses and he gets the league minimum when he comes up? It all depends on how the league classifies his free agency.
  17. That contract is pretty awful. I know he had a huge this year, but that is a dude that has a long history of fighting health and this year was so far and above what he has done in the past. I am not sure I want the Sox to bet a quarter of a billion dollars, PLUS major prospects on the guy.
  18. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) It's also the end of the deal. Fair value for Sale, IMO, would've been Moncada, Kopech, one of Basabe/Diaz, and one prospect who's better than them but worse than Moncada/Kopech. The 3rd piece was just too light- someone like Travis, Chavis, or Groome would've helped. Sure it would have helped. But unless that offer existed somewhere else, it isn't realistic.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 12:13 PM) The Hawks can use LTIR for Marian Hossa this year. http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/sports/nhl-...-449243223.html Apparently Rozsivol is also going on to LTIR, giving the Hawks almost $6 million to play with.

  22. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:48 AM) http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2017/...epublicans.html This is f***ing awful. Glad they canned her. Honestly I am kind of surprised they did. Usually these things go unnoticed.
  23. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:21 AM) You cant just keep using that excuse.. It is reality. That's why you don't see kids making the jumps like Sale and Rodon did. If it were easy enough to be an "excuse" it would happen all of the time. Just because you don't like it, doesn't change its validity.
  24. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:54 AM) One of the more interesting parts of this off-season will probably be how they handle the 40 man and if they do anything in the rule 5. I'm guessing Tyler will be cut loose and maybe a reliever or two. I looked at the Sox 40 man roster a few weeks ago. They could easily pare it into the low 30's with no impact to the teams future.
  25. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:41 AM) Just a hypothetical thought I had, but if that Quintana trade had been made first, does the Sale trade change at all? If the Sox really did want Devers over Moncada (and Boston said no is the rumor), would the fact that Chicago traded Jimenez for Quintana have changed their mind? It could have, though the offers were never close to Sale/Eaton at that time, hence the Sox sitting on him until July.
