  1. QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:18 AM) But fortunately, the Sox basically no cash committed outside of Robert and Abreu. Rodon and Avi the soonest pay raises. It becomes really important the distinction of if he is under the international signing rules or a true free agent. If he is under the international rules, we have zero chance.
  2. QUOTE (Sockin @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:43 AM) I would have to think the Tigers would do whatever possible to sign him with the money they cleared from Verlander. That is a really good call. They just freed up a lot of cash, and could still move other players this off season.
  3. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) Never have been a fan of handing out big money to aging vets and have preferred to spend big on young talent. Maitan is certainly young talent so if he becomes a FA, I would pull out all the stops to sign the kid. Go the Luis Robert route and get the young Latin American talent from the Sox system to help sweep the kid off his feet. Make a video ( ala Robert ) with Abreu, Avi, Moncada, Robert, Jimenez, Adolfo etc to sweet talk the kid and be prepared to spend huge to get him. Also, pump Chicago's huge Latin American community, culture and cuisine. Whatever it takes. Man, if this kid becomes a FA and is added to the FA market with Otani, this off season will be a crazy ride. Maitan is Venezuelan, so I imagine a guy like Avi would be our best player connection to have involved.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:47 AM) Got the best hitting prospect in baseball and the best pitching prospect in baseball. Unless some other team was willing to give us a 6+ for 1 deal, nobody would be able to match that. That's how I felt about it. There is the very real possibility that Moncada alone could replace the WAR we were getting from Sale. Kopech also has that kind of ceiling. That is a huge start to this deal.
  5. So I actually went back and searched the previous case. The Red Sox prospects did count against the international caps when signing with their new teams. I am not sure if playing in the US makes any difference or not as the most important thing is that neither player would have been union represented at the time of their release, so I don't know if Maitan playing in the US will make a difference or not. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/...om-Boston-.html
  6. QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 07:19 AM) Hahn should have received more in the Sale trade. Nothing against Kopech or Moncada, obviously. But, Hahn should have received four legitimate prospects. Basabe and Diaz are not on that category. What better offer was out there? I sure haven't heard it.
  7. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 08:54 AM) How does this work with a 17-year old free agent? It makes sense with draft picks and when international free agents come over as amateurs since the amount of money is just a bonus but I'm not sure how this works here. Say if he signs the same deal Soler signed: does that go in effect right away or when he comes up in 3-4 years? If he is a true free agent, he can sign any contract he wants from MiLB to a full long term major league contract.
  8. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 08:02 AM) I think the bidding would end up getting much higher than $10-12 million if Maitan were declared a free agent. I'm thinking 30-60 million? Seeing as all teams could bid, and not just those under the international caps, I would say the opening bid is $50 million.
  9. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 08:58 PM) It will be a really interesting case study in how much the draft limits contract size if he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He's ranked lower and is younger and therefore more risky than Luis Robert, so it should be below the $25 mil he recieved, but it would probably be above the highest draft bonus. Wild guess, it would end up being around $10-12 mil. He would also be an absolutely free agent, and not subject to international caps, so all teams would be open to bid on him without penalty. It would be pretty unprecedented.
  10. QUOTE (Baron @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 06:17 PM) I wouldnt think he'd be subject to the international rules right? The implication of free agent to me means that he would NOT be subject to the caps.
  11. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 07:14 PM) Watch us snag him As a true free agent? If Robert was a $25 million free agent with all of the restrictions, I have to imagine the opening bid will be double that for Maitan, could it go nine figures?
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 07:04 PM) Great writeup https://sports.yahoo.com/john-coppolellas-r...-230643724.html Gotta say, today made me think twice about our LatAm performance last few years. If it was this dirty, Sox coming off wilder may have felt need to be extra clean and could have been at big disadvantage dealing with buscones. Oh damn.
  13. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 04:25 PM) If Maitan was declared a free agent, would he count against international signing caps? I know that recent draft picks that were awarded free agency were completely unrestricted. That is a great question with huge implications for the answer.
  14. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) That was a fair point coming into this year but not after he only managed 69.1 innings with a FIP of 4.69. For whatever reason he struggled when he came back this year. I'm guessing his arm never felt right. I'm willing to give him a pass for the performance but not because of lack of development time in the minors. He had over 300 innings of MLB experience coming into this year. He should not be walking over 4 guys per 9 innings at this point. 300 innings isn't really even a lot of minor league experience if you think about it. The kid is still learning on the job.
  15. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) That was a fair point coming into this year but not after he only managed 69.1 innings with a FIP of 4.69. I'm willing to give him a pass for the performance but not because of lack of development time in the minors. He had over 300 innings of MLB experience coming into this year. He should not be walking over 4 guys per 9 innings at this point. This year probably had to do more with zero spring training and 13 IP before going to the big club. That is a fraction of normal.
  16. And then there is one of the greatest live rock performances of all time...
  17. Carlos Rodon has a career total of 55 2/3 IP in the minor leagues, including the 13+ he pitched down there this year. The fact that he has struggle with consistency is only a surprise in that it hasn't been MORE often, not how often it has happened.
  18. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) This is crazy. I was driving yesterday and heard a Petty song. I started thinking about this thread and had the idea of starting a thread which would be in advance of a celebrity death. The idea being to pay tribute to them before they die, rather than the usual response to their death. I was going to start it with Tom Petty. He spans my memories from late grammar school through my early 20s. Some great music. Unique voice and sound. Then, I thought it was a little morbid. There are more obvious names that people would name, but I thought Petty was a good one because he flies a little under the radar. I'm seriously bummed seeing that he died. Some artists just speak to you. It took until my adulthood for it to happen with Petty, but once it did, it was a pretty big connection. There aren't too many more artists I will be this sad about when they go... Paul McCartney is the only one I can think of off of the top of my head. There is just such an amazing body of work with Petty, and such a straightforward style. His music didn't need to be cleaned up for radio, his voice wasn't the thing you think of as radio friendly even though he has a face made for radio, etc. But the guitar work and the lyrics made him stand up on his own. Damn. Wildflowers and Full Moon Fever are just spectacular rock albums made after the era of rock he belonged to, yet they still stood out. The work he did in the two Wilbury's albums both stands out on for his own contributions, yet together defines the concept of Supergroup to a T. RIP.
  19. So sad to hear this. Petty is one of my all time favorites. Both his solo stuff, and some of the incredible work he did in the Traveling Wilbury's has never aged at all for me. Damn.
  20. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) In 2016,the Braves gave Kevin Maitan $4.5 million out of Venezuela. They had multiple signings from Venezuela including a catcher named Abraham Gutierrez. He wasn't that highly regarded among the industry and Atlanta gave him $3.53 million. I've seen speculation on twitter these signings could be linked. It's common for teams to sign players from one trainer in return for signing lesser players from that same trainer. This could be really bad though. When the Red Sox did this all of their signings for that entire year were cancelled. If Maitan becomes a free agent... Yikes.

  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) Seems difficult to believe a guy with this profile would suddenly convert to Islam and join up with ISIS in his 60's. Plus ISIS, as others noted, claims all manner of stuff they didn't do. But it's not impossible I suppose. The fact that he is 64 years old and has no criminal record at all is already a big overcoming of the typical odds in profile of this type of shooter.
  23. Just saw a flash across Bloomberg that ISIS is claiming credit and saying that the shooter had just converted to Islam in the last couple of months... but also noting that ISIS likes to make stuff like this up in an attempt to claim credit for attacks.

  25. Now that the 2017 season is over, and we saw 162 games played at the major league level played, a lot of players traded away as well as brought into the organization... what are you going to take from the 2017 season as a White Sox fan?
