Rodon has minor shoulder surgery
QUOTE (Dunt @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 03:55 PM) I could be interpreting incorrectly, but I think rehab would be included in that time. Worst case scenario, he's out until June. Getting prepared for the season isn't really rehab though.

Rodon has minor shoulder surgery
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 03:50 PM) Dan HayesVerified account @CSNHayes Significant bursitis was discovered. But biceps and labrum were fine. #WhiteSox give general timeframe of 6-8 months. The short end of the prognosis puts him right in for opening day. The far end is more like the beginning of June. By the time he gets some innings in the minors to get ready, it could be something like July 4th before we see Rodon again.

2017 Watercooler TV thread
QUOTE (The Gooch @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 01:12 PM) I thought the opposite. To me season 1 was meh and season 2 was much better It gets a little corny at times in an effort to create more character conflict, such as the head to head confrontations between Axe and Rhodes. It is a decent series, but nothing I would go out of my way to have to watch either. I will keep watching as we get to Season 3, but there will be a list of shows I am more interested in at the same time.

NCAA basketball thread 2017-18
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 01:14 PM) I'd be surprised if head coaches have direct involvement with this stuff. Out of sight out of mind. Plausible deniability. And more practically, HC's don't do the heavy lifting when it comes to recruiting. They close the deal but the assistants are the ones running most of it. If Pitino didn't have the extortion case and the stripper case, my guess is that he'd still have a job today. You get to use the "i didn't know" excuse once. Maybe a suspension, maybe a few vacated wins, but I think most coaches would survive a "rogue" assistance coach. Typically, yes. But with the size, scope, and the legal implications of this specific incident, I think schools aren't going to be as accommodating as they typically would for NCAA violations.

NCAA basketball thread 2017-18
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 10:52 AM) I tend to not care generally about schools paying kids on the recruiting trail. I know it's against the NCAA's rules, but the kids are unpaid labor (I know, I know, they get scholarships) whose likenesses and talents bring in loads of revenue for everybody other than themselves. Ergo, while I tend to agree that the head coach obviously knows how the assistant is operating, I can't really bring myself to care that much (and that includes Pitino, Calipari, Miller, etc.). With that being said, the indictment against Evans is that he steered players toward a specific agency, and that he was paid around $22k for his influence. If that is the extent of the allegations against Evans, it's reasonable to believe that Underwood isn't caught up in that. Doesn't directly impact recruiting, the payments are really pretty small for a guy making north of $1M annually. Underwood would have to be dumb to be pulled into that. BUT I think one of the allegations on Evans says that he said that he needed some cash to set up a recruit's mom. That gets into an area where the NCAA could have an issue with Underwood. Also don't know what Evans might say/know that might get Underwood in trouble with the feds. The minimum that has to happen is that the NCAA finds that this happened under Underwood's watch and he should have known about it. That is exactly what Pitino got his suspension for with the hooker scandal even though there was no actual evidence connecting him to it at all. If there is any evidence or testimony at all that Underwood did know anything about it at all, that pushes it to a whole other level. We aren't talking about much here at all for this to take down Underwood, or any other head coach for that matter.

Does Abreu fit into Sox longer term plans?
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 12:52 PM) Ercarnacion got 3/$60M coming off a similar season at age 33. Abreu is going to get an AAV of at least $17.5M and maybe even closer to $20M. As a free agent. Not with two arb years included.

Does Abreu fit into Sox longer term plans?
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 12:03 PM) Nelson Cruz got 4/57 coming off some huge years, I still don't see any team giving an aging DH 4/75 The DH/1B market is pretty dead. I think a 4/60 deal makes a lot more sense, especially when you consider you are getting two arb years in that math.

Reverse Standings Thread
QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 10:19 AM) Look at the past. the higher pick you have the higher liklihood of actually hitting on that pick. Pick #1 has a better history than pick #26 for example and so on and so on. And even more projectionable than that are kids who are in the upper minors or already with your ballclub.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 08:14 AM) For the last couple weeks, a though on this topic keeps rolling around in my head. It's something I have not seen brought up anywhere (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that - obviously i have not read every article on NK). So I just wanted to throw this one in here and see how people react. I think there's a substantial chance that North Korea will be invaded... by China. I know it sounds odd, but think it through. China is not allied with NK because of some sort of cultural bond - in fact prior to the Korean War the Koreans and Chinese were bitter enemies. They are not friends for any reasons really other than: China wants a buffer between them and the US-aligned nations, and they get cheap labor and a market desperate for their goods. Thing is though, those are only helpful if NK doesn't cause constant global s***storms. What China really wants is a stable, quiet, and still relatively poor North Korea that bends to China's whims. The current leadership won't supply that. China certainly can handle NK militarily. NK isn't poised against China - all it's eyes and guns are aimed at South Korea, Japan, and US interests in the Far East. China would have all the surprise, a wide open border, and better intel on where all the stuff is than probably anyone else. They could, for the first time in decades, show a real military victory to the world. Certainly no other country would step in during such a thing either. They slam NK, install a puppet government, open up the economy and allow the country to progress. Not saying it WILL happen. Just saying, everyone is so laser-focused on what the US will do militarily, but I think there could be an interloper. I said it before, but I really think the big change NK will cause is the re-militarization of Japan. I think if China did anything to collapse NK, they know that they will be the recipient of all of the North's refugees and problems. In that way they are similar to USA and Mexico in that when people look for somewhere better to go, they go to China. They have a large NK immigrant population already, so if their society were to be destabilized by an invasion, China will pay the price. That is why I can't see them moving harshly against NK. Maybe a quiet assassination, but not an invasion.

NCAA basketball thread 2017-18
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 04:42 PM) Luckily Illinois has been so bad the last decade i'm not really worried about recruiting scandals. Their best recruits were probably Meyers Leonard and Jerome Richmond, both guys that were local and huge Illinois fans. edit: and yeah, Illinois has no exposure with Evans. Keep in mind the universities are seen as the "victims" of these crimes for being duped and frauded by the assistant coaches into giving scholarships to ineligible players. I guess worse case Underwood gets implicated for his one year at OSU, but nothing at Illinois. All it takes is the assistant to connect Underwood to what went on. Then Illinois has to have a wasted year this year and start all over again next year.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 04:23 PM) They haven't even figured that part out yet. It's the same 1 page "plan" they could have put out and probably did put out at the convention last year. They literally have made zero of the hard choices of who exactly will be paying more. Any projection of who is paying more right now is a joke. There's less detail in this than in Bernie Sanders's universal Health Care proposals while a candidate, and they've had nearly a year to turn this into policy. One of two things will happen. They will either give up on any of the pay-fors because those are politically difficult and just remember that Republicans only care about the deficit when Democrats are in charge and just cut the top level individual and corporate tax rates... Or Donald Trump will say something as racist as usual for him and his defenders will come out cheering and we'll forget about this, a-la infrastructure week. Why can't someone pay me to write claptrap like this? 2 hours of work, tops. I can't imagine the line is very long to be Donald Trumps PR guy right now.

Does Abreu fit into Sox longer term plans?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 04:27 PM) If they're going to extend him they should do it now - pay more in the next 2 years and in return have to pay for fewer years at the end of his career. The big problem is that his next two years are arb years and I can't see the Sox giving him a contract that respects those historicals, but still be able to front load a deal.

Does Abreu fit into Sox longer term plans?
QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 04:26 PM) I agree about waiting on Avi. I would support an Abreu extension though. It's risky to follow too closely to any plan. Plenty of guys won't work out so it's nice to start with a sure thing. Abreu is about as solid of an investment as you can make in MLB. After four years you have a really nice and narrow window of what you are going to get from the guy. He isn't a guy that depends on speed or defense for what he contributes, so he doesn't really have a skill set that you worry about eroding a lot in this age bracket. It is hard to call a 4 or 5 year deal "safe", but Abreu is a pretty safe bet.

All it takes is the assistant looking to make a deal to screw over Illinois.
