QUOTE (kingranch @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 02:51 PM) safest as in becoming a star MLB player? safest as becoming average player? How would you rank Kopech? Safe as in a starting pitcher? Or just as a solid pitcher (relief or starter)? I would say with the adjustments he has made in the second half that he will be a pretty good pitcher. Now whether he is a starter or shut down pitcher in bullpen I am not sure Prior to the last month I held a greater level of fears that Kopech could crater at the upper levels because of a lack of control much like Tyler Glasnow did. It is darned near impossible to survive in MLB if you are walking 5 guys per 9 innings. Off of the top of my head I can think of young Nolan Ryan and young Randy Johnson. What really moved them to the next level was even mediocre control. Now if Kopech's recent flirtation with control is a real thing, that totally changes his profile going forward. You can't deny the arm, but if you can't throw strikes, it is really hard to succeed at the major league level.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 12:23 PM) I can't put Moncada and Avi in the same sentence, because Avi has zero OBP skills, while Moncada has ability to have elite OBP skills. Reality is, Moncada should be good (even with a high k-rate)...however, if he gets his k-rate in check (and presumingly as a result hits the ball with solid / strong contact on a regular basis, while leveraging his power tools, etc), we are talking about someone who can be elite. Jimenez has elite skills as well...more raw in the sense that he needs to prove himself at higher levels...but someone who has proven more from an ability to reduce k's, etc. I continue to say, it is very very difficult to be a very good offensive player if you strike out a lot. Similarly, if you can't draw walks at all, your ability to be well above average offensively is also limited. The nice thing about quite a few of the newcomers to the Sox system is they have demonstrated strong walk abilities (which can be hard to teach) but most do have the flaw of high k-rate's. That said, you can hope with time/development, you can see improvements to those factors on the down-side and potentially more noticeable improvements. I continue to be of the believe that advanced stats don't accurately account/negate for the strikeout. The comp isn't in terms of talent or style. The comp is in terms of time to develop. Moncada is still really raw.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 11:39 AM) I wouldn't put Eloy above Moncada. A corner outfielder with average speed and likely average at best defense vs. a middle infielder with 5 tools? I think Eloy will be a beast at the plate but Moncada just has the capability to provide value in so many other ways. That is missing a guy who has 40 homer and 40 double potential, plus seems to have a feel for hitting for average at the same time. He makes contact, and has a K rate in the 20% range so far this season. It is a tough call. I think that Moncada has a higher ceiling because of his speed, but I think Eloy is much closer to his ceiling. If I had to bet on it, I would guess that Moncada may have a path that more resembles Avi's while Eloy could be a guy who could hit more like Bryant and hit from day one.

Giolito named starter for Tuesday
QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) I think we see Gio up in sept, then up after they get an additional year of control out of him next year. I see our pitching staff looking like this next year. SP Rodon* SP Lopez SP Chatwood - FA SP Santiago* - FA SP Shields CL - Petricka - Jones if he comes back healthy SU - FA scrap heap SU - Bummer* MR - Goldberg MR - Rule V LO - Clark* LR - Danish If Giotlito spends September with the Sox, he would need to stay in Charlotte until almost July to get the extra year of control. That doesn't make much sense to me.

Leury Garcia
QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 10:47 AM) He was never a bonus baby though I think Hahn and the FO will lock him up to a 25M contract, buy out his three remaining ARB years so they have cost certainty then have two additional team options with a 750k buy out for year 1 and a 1.5M for year two. I don't see the need for a Leury extension. He doesn't really hit any of the check boxes that would be looked at for a typical player extension, especially now that he is getting into his arb years. Unless you are looking at a 4 to 6 year deal to buy out some free agency, there really isn't a point here, especially because even if this is his peak, you won't be saving THAT much money now with his cheap years gone to spread some money into.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 10:14 AM) Moncada has Rickey Henderson lite potential. He'll never steal as many bases, but Rickey Henderson is the 2nd best baseball player I've ever seen. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 10:17 AM) That makes me want to comp Moncada to Tim Raines, the original Henderson lite. Yeah, I don't think he will ever really have 40 homer power, but I think he will have some pop (maybe 20-25 homers on a season to season basis) but he is going to turn groundballs into singles, singles into doubles, and doubles into triples. If they let him run, he can be Henderson or Raines disruptive to a defense.

Giolito named starter for Tuesday
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 10:16 AM) I don't plan on him breaking camp with the team. I would go with a rotation of: 1) Rodon 2) Lopez 3) 1 year deal FA 4) 1 year deal FA 5) Shields Make Giolito, Fulmer, Stephens and Guerrero earn a promotion in AAA, and have a couple guys that are flip candidates in the rotation. All that said, if the Sox plan on having Giolito be on the opening day roster next season, then I can't argue them bringing him up for a few starts this year as it will make no difference. I am not THAT passionate about it one way or another, and Gio has been quite good over his past several starts. I just hate wasting service time on our precious assets in what we know is going to be a another awful team in 2018, but it is inevitable. I'd honestly prefer to see fringe guys like Stephens or Guerrero get an opening day rotation spot. Again...just an opinion. Giolito has 39 days of service as of today. When you add in a couple of weeks to pass the service time deadline that would put him at need to join the Sox roster sometime around the 3rd week of May for the extra year of control. I just don't see that happening. Get him up here September 1st or whenever the next starter is dumped.

2016 International Class progress
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 09:46 AM) So one of the reasons I did this is usually DSL seems awful when I look at it for the signings. Here's a flavor of last year for the 2015 guys Tatis dnp had he we may have never traded him Franklin Reyes in AZL .171 / .189 / .251 Santo Vazquez .233 / .300 /.305 Vazquez is a SS and has actually shown good power this year with 5 HRs but less contact. .247 / .351 / .411 (so rare I find over .400 slugging with these dudes) Dude has a 27% k rate though. But he could be interesting next year. Brayant Nova was alright, and had stats similar to Comas/Mieses above .279 / .380 / .344 And he is doing fine again in DSL his second year: .276 / .366 / .373 and he has a good k and bb rate. Those were the 4 I know about. The 2014 guys are Nunez, etc Why it's exciting to see Sosa have good contact/k rate, because we are used to seeing Reyes/Nunez numbers in AZL, which were like this: .145 / .207 / .158 So maybe they dont progress, but I like the low k rates so far, it allows them to sell out for more power next year as they mature while not going into a danger zone territory. And that's all I have to say about 17 year old kids (JK I spent way too much time on this please comment and make a megathread) Thanks for doing the updates. The really nice thing is that the guys from the 2015 class have had better years this year. Franklin Reyes has added 200 OPS points while moving up to Great Falls. His numbers aren't great, but they are a huge step up from last year. Harvin Mendoza is also still in the DSL out of that class and he has moved his OPS up to near .800. He actually has almost as many walks as K's with a pretty good K rate. His power numbers are also coming up.

Updated Fangraphs Top 10 Sox Prop
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 09:05 PM) Giolito is Floyd, Lopez is a harder throwing Vazquez I could buy into that comp. Vazquez almost had too much movement on his pitches, and would go through stretches where he couldn't locate and consistently throw for strikes. Lopez seems to have ridiculous amounts of movement even on his fastball.

Leury Garcia
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 09:59 PM) If he maintains his production over the next six weeks, I wouldn't be against a cheap extension. Out of all the surprises this year (Avi, Davidson, Sanchez, etc.), I have the most faith in Leury going forward. By the end of this season, he will have over 3 years of service time. His "cheap" window is gone.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 08:14 PM) I just don't see the point in calling him up this year. Save the service time and let him earn a spot next season. If you plan on having him up next year, his service time doesn't matter anymore.

Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 12:22 AM) LOL No, it's a request to have some semblance of competence on this team. There is no one - not one bullpen pitcher - who should be on a major league roster. Not one. Do you think a game like this and loss after loss helps development? And Petricka - good lord, he's never been any good at all. This year is not about development for about 90% of the roster. Let me put it this way, how many guys in the bullpen do you expect to be on our next playoff team? I can about promise you that Tyler Clippard won't be.

A Star* is Born
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 08:42 AM) I'm rather amazed by this. In the American league, there are only 2 teams that have gotten >.800 OPS out of their DH slot this year - the Indians and the Mariners. The average OPS for AL DHs is .742. The NL is actually getting more production out of the DH spot than the AL. This is only somewhat relevant to Delmonico, but hey, he puts up an .825 OPS and they use him mostly at the DH spot, he'd be the 3rd best DH in the American League. .825 would be pretty shocking. His MiLB OPS for his career is .773. He put up a .768 in his 100 games at Charlotte. He will go through some pretty serious regression here soon.

Zack Collins/Eloy Jimenez promoted
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 12:49 PM) I had Zavala on my midseason list but this is craziness. He went from underrated to overrated pretty quickly. He's 24 years old at High A and there's definite concern that he's not a major league catcher. He can hit but in no universe is he the caliber of prospect that Zack Collins is. These things aren't mutually exclusive. Every time Collins gets mentioned, Zavala doesn't need to be brought up. They will likely share time in Birmingham next year as well. Age is much less important for catchers.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 04:19 PM) If you did answer honestly, you would be tarred and feathered, like yesterday's "discussion." Although one is left to wonder if Trump had told the electorate exactly what he was really planning to do...if they still would have voted for him regardless. What does that say about America, and especially the broken political system where by 2020 nobody will trust either party to do anything for the middle class. Non sequitor because yet again, you missed the point. People.Vote.Against.Their.Self-Interests.All.Of.The.Time.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 04:06 PM) So you basically want no unions, no regulations on the financial services industry...what is an acceptable ratio of CEO to mid-level management salary to you, then? You honestly think all the wealth accruing to the Top 3-5% of Americans is going to have a happy ending for America? And who are going to be the customers for all your products if you've almost completely hollowed out the middle class and the majority of blue collar/labor jobs have been replaced by quantum computers, robotics and algorithms? The defense industry/military industrial complex? lmao, way to totally miss the point here, but nice list bro.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 03:42 PM) RE: Unions-There is a reason they call it collective BARGAINING. First, there was no representation of labor in this country, and the working conditions were crappy to say the least. Fast forward 60 years, and there was an overcorrection where labor had most of the leverage, and they kept taking more and more from management. Management responds by breaking unions. Fast forward another 35 years and there is an overcorrection in the other direction, where management holds most of the cards again. Collective bargaining means both sides give concessions until both are happy. Then there should be no strike or lockout. However, there has to be common sense. Should laborers have job security. Yes. Should they never be able to be fired? No. If you are ass sitting for weeks on end then of course you should be s***canned. At the same time, Should management be able to fire someone because they challenged them constructively for business reasons? Absolutely not. Unions need to work the way they were intended to work. Unfortunately, both union leaders and management don't come to the table as rational negotiators. RE: The environment: This is non-negotiable in my opinion. There should be absolutely zero tolerance for pollution. There is no level of pollution that is acceptable. If there is any chance whatsoever that humans can be harmed by exposure to chemicals/pollutants, then the regulation needs to exist. end of story. I have a B.S. in chemical engineering Read about cancer alley in Louisiana. It is why I don't want to work in the petrochemical industry. Also with regard to broader climate change action, I believe it exists, and that the results of inaction could bring about the extinction of humans. So, this is non-negotiable. RE: D v. R- I think both sides have lost their base. Democrats have gone too far to the center( if not right of center) on most economic issues, and the GOP is just a bunch of loons, who are protecting really wealthy people's s***. RE: Welfare. I live on it. It sucks. I work too. They take my benefits away, the more that I work. It is really messed up. I don't have the social ability/executive functioning skills to hold down a full time, non supportive position. I didn't know that until I actually tried to do it. If I would have known, I would not have attended post secondary education. Right now I try to maximize the combo of the two(welfare/work) for maximum personal income. Would it be easier to sit around all day and do nothing, yeah. But it is really depressing to do so. It is hazardous to my mental health. You'd never know how incredibly fulfilling even the most boring, repetitive position is until you've gone 18 months with no job and responses to applications that are less in number than the digits on one's hand. The programs for disabled individuals to find full time work is misguided. They throw everyone into a giant pool and treat everyone the same, trying to get them entry level jobs(like those you get when you're 16) just to get them off the books. They have no regard for level of functioning that said disabled person has. I wanted to get a job as a Chemical Engineer or Lab Tech. They tried to get me to apply for bagging groceries and washing dishes. They completely ignored the fact that I would have an easier time holding down the ChE job rather than the dishwasher job, with my level of functioning and disability. Physically not moving quickly and lack of manual dexterity is part of autism. For those interested in Cancer Alley: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer_Alley So you literally just made a list of excuses for why you would vote against your best interests, while questioning why people would vote against their best interests. It happens all of the time with the political system we have in place.
