QUOTE (Tony @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 11:23 AM) It's June 15th and Avi is leading the league in hitting at .339 Bizarre. Easily the most unlikely thing that has happened to the White Sox this year, and that is including Tommy Kahnle.

White Sox pick 3B Jake Burger at #11
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 11:24 AM) I get the critique but I actually disagree. I think the power potential of picks 1-2 does make them high upside. I really don't see Burger as that safe of a pick (Bukauskus much safer). But if a) his defense actually turns out to be good due to body upgrades or b) that doesn't happen and his power isn't there, then he's a disaster. The arms in rounds 4-6 feature 1 power arm, and 2 relievers that if are actually playable as starters become much more valuable. Kade McLure just reminds me of a Zack Thompson but he was a 6th round pick. The 3rd round picks, I think we are just seeing a trend of us being just too far back to get that run of high schoolers, and then grabbing the best available college bats left. 3 relievers in the top 10 is pretty awful. I get they are going to try starting them, but I haven't been very encouraged at our results at doing it.

If you were comfortably rich, what would you do?
QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 11:51 AM) I would travel and invest in properties around the world. Then I would get bored. I really think my life is more fulfilling the way it is now then if I were to have hit the lottery or something quick and easy. I have the things that I want but I have to work hard for them and they don't come all at once. I live a very satisfying life. Now once I am old and no longer interested in working hard and reaching goals then talk to me about winning the lottery then. I sort of feel the same way. I love my job, my family is in a great place, and I am hooked up with some great people and organizations that I support. The crazy thing is if I ever got stupid rich, I would buy the company I work for and turn the day to day operations over to the other 4 people I work with, and then live off of the revenue stream from it. There really isn't anything I want to get away from per se, but I would love to put more resources into things around my hometown that really need it. Though I will admit, a lot more travel and baseball would be in my future.

Invest a million into my local HS. Most likely a state of the art track facility. Payoff all debts, and start investing into some long term real estate and securities.

White Sox pick 3B Jake Burger at #11
QUOTE (Soha @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 12:04 AM) Might be posted somewhere else, but Bleacher Report listed the Sox as losers of the draft. They didn't like the Burger pick, and in general thought the Sox were in a position to be bold, but instead played it safe. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2715517...gramming-league I am not sure if I am the only one, but after all was said and done, I am pretty disappointed too. There just isn't a whole lot of high ceilings in the bunch. It felt a lot more like a Kenny Williams draft with a lot of high floors. We drafted one HS that we will sign (in all likelihood the late draftees aren't signing), and he is as far away as the 16 year olds in the DR from the sounds of it.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 11:42 PM) Not that Rick Hahn is bad at identifying talent, but it's not his strong point. The reason he was such a sought after GM is due to how contract savvy he is. Chris Sale was always going to bring a haul, but it was Hahn's shrewd negotiations that probably netted the Sox both Moncada and Kopech. Without the contract they had in place for Eaton, there's no way Washington is giving up all 3 of Giolito, Lopez, and Dunning. If they got Luis Robert simply because they are paying everything upfront instead of pushing this off, thus making Robert more money as a result, the dude is amazing. People give him s*** because the Sox have not put a good team on the field under his regime thus far, but that's been more s***ty depth and less about what he's actually done. He's worked some very impressive trades and not actually given up much, if anything, in actual talent. I said it before, but think of it this way. Because of the difference in tax rates, if Robert is in the DR when he collects the $25 million, he saves ~$4 million in taxes vs if he had been in the US when he collected it. In order to have gotten him an extra $4 million in take home money in the US, the bonus would have had to have been somewhere in the neighborhood of ~$32 million. In other words if the Sox bid $25 million, but paying it in the DR, versus another team offering $30 million, but paying in the US, the Sox bid would have been a higher take home value to Robert. That would also explain the conflicting reports over whether St Louis offered a higher bid to Robert or not. It could have been higher in total dollars, but smaller after tax considerations because of the Sox starting him in the DR. If that is the case, brilliant. Some times it pays to have a businessman around.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 11:53 PM) "Jerry and the partners" ought to really check in with their financial planners before they make any foolish decisions, despite how those decisions might benefit the Sox' fan base (as if THAT'S ever been a factor in any decision-making the past four decades). Wouldn't want to threaten Reinsdorf's status as "billionaire owner" by asking him to sign players who might just lift this franchise out of its near decade-long postseason-appearing drought. I know it is fun to think that people with lots of money will give it away for no reason, but I prefer to deal in reality. Guys who are self-made wealthy got there for a reason. Caring about people who take pot shots at them isn't going to move the needle at all. There is also the fact that in a situation like this, it is pretty unlikely that they just leave $50-60 million sitting around in a savings account somewhere or in a vault like Scrooge McDuck. To me that is more important than hurt feelings as a consideration for how the team will act going forward.

6/14 Games
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) https://www.outsidepitchmlb.com/white-sox-r...ldo-lopez/63452 So much for the Verducci Theory on Lopez (30% increase in ip). Knock on wood. The Sox have two great exceptions to that rule in Quintana and Sale.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 06:12 PM) Can't the bonus be paid over multiple years? Wasn't that the exact reason why some posters here thought we got money with Moncada? The bonus can, the tax can't. At the very least the Sox are writing a $33ish million check (tax ~ $25 million, payment 8.333m give) give or take a million for tax purposes. My guess from the way they are doing this in the Dominican is that they are going to pay it all up front to save the kid on the taxes as that is something like a difference of a $4 million because of various tax rates, if my math holds up. If you divide into 3 payments, you lose 2/3 of the tax benefits.

Reverse Standings Thread
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 06:07 PM) Again, it depends on who the Sox replace the traded players with. If it's just filler players then yes it will be ugly. If it's some of the more highly touted players, then they better hope it isn't ugly. None of the highly touted guys are really "ready". No one is screaming to be called up at this point. Now that might change in the next month, but as of today, those guys aren't exactly setting the world on fire.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 05:59 PM) Who will they replace them with? If it's the highly touted young players, you should hope they won't be a bad team. Otherwise the future is bleak. The immediate future is pretty ugly.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 03:50 PM) Either way, they are set to pay him the remainder of his contract if they don't move him. So might as well eat as much as you are willing possible to get a couple good prospects out of it. Only if they can't get a less player from a team who picks up the entire contract.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 03:28 PM) The Nats owner nixed the Robertson trade because of money. He nixed signing Greg Holland because of money attached to a vesting option. To think they will go out and trade a bunch of top prospects for highly paid guys seems very improbable. It hasn't been said yet by the organization, but I really would bet money that their willing to pick up a large chunk of money in a deal went down a lot with the signing of Luis Robert. That is a $50 million check that Jerry and the partners have to write now. Are they going to be willing to write another $10 million check to Washington? Eh, I can't see it. The cost is only sunk if the assumption is that they couldn't take less in a trade to get someone to take the contract.

Painful and Difficult situation
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 03:19 PM) At many schools, they aren't allowed to live in the dorms. But Oregon apparently wasn't aware of his status, so I wonder how many schools would have been. The hypothetical was that they did know ahead of time.
