Sale likely to be suspended
QUOTE (daa84 @ May 3, 2017 -> 03:14 PM) pretty interesting. I don't really agree with it. Slippery slope of trying to prove intent, especially when a guy wasn't thrown out of the game His history is the noose around his neck.

2017 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (daa84 @ May 3, 2017 -> 03:12 PM) mike trout - year in and year out the best player in the majors, and STILL manages to be possibly the most underrated player in the majors. I know that everyone realizes he's the best player in the majors...but do they? this is rhetorical btw Playing on the west coast just kills his exposure. If he were on the East Coast, you'd never stop hearing about him.

Sign Avi to a long term contract?
I am just going to be green and recycle these two responses. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 19, 2017 -> 10:40 AM) QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 12:40 PM) This might be the funniest thing I have ever read on Soxtalk.

SSS Theater: Avi Garcia
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 3, 2017 -> 02:12 PM) Ya, I'm an idiot. Thought that was the case originally then saw something that said otherwise then figured out it. That's why I edited and re-edited ha. Ha, gotta be quicker than that.

SSS Theater: Avi Garcia
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 3, 2017 -> 02:02 PM) So if Avi is indeed a big league regular now what the hell do you do with him? He's a free agent like right when we expect the team to take off but he's still only 25. Interesting conundrum. EDIT: I'm an idiot, he's a fa after this year but point still remains...kinda. 2020.

2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 3, 2017 -> 01:46 PM) Jake has been super meh this year too. Definitely saw the Hendricks regression coming but I think Lester will be ok going forward. Their rotation isn't super exciting at the moment that's for sure. Not to mention they don't have a pen to cover them like they did last year.

5/3 Games
QUOTE (beautox @ May 3, 2017 -> 01:35 PM) Leave him down till after the trade deadline. Gives time for Frazier to get his trade value up while giving long looks at Saladino, Sanchez & Leury. This is the other part of that. The people who are up are playing pretty well in general. Sanchez and Leury are off to great starts, and while Saladino hasn't hit great since the first few days of the season, he #4 in all in all of baseball at 2B in fangraphs dWAR with 30 less PAs than anyone else in front of him.

5/3 Games
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 3, 2017 -> 01:12 PM) Took long enough for Gordon Beckham to be brought up. True, but I would like to thing relevant here. Moncada has been playing well, but isn't exactly FORCING himself to be called up yet either. His strike out rate is still a pretty significant red flag. He's still sitting just under 1 out of 3 PAs with a K. It's not quite Joey Gallo territory, but you also aren't getting his ridiculous power. Moncada's #1 asset is his speed, which does you no good if he isn't making contact.

Life as a New Parent
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ May 3, 2017 -> 01:03 PM) Really though, even if it's a financial wash, she still may want to work. It all depends on your kids obviously, but mine are two very energetic boys. I'd burn out very quickly if I had to stay at home alone with them all day. My wife, I think, would be in a similar boat. And just getting out of the house and feeling productive may be a benefit, even if it's not really a contribution to the family financially. Both of my kids are in daycare. My almost-5 year old is leaving to start real school in the fall. We'll go from paying about $325/week for him to $90 (before and after school care). My 11 month old still has a ways to go, but at least we've figured out how to manage 2 in daycare at a time, so if #3 happens we can handle it. And even if the dollars are close to even, being out of the workforce for 5 years or more could also mean a loss of future earnings, and any potential advancements that could have happened during that time as well.

5/3 Games
QUOTE (raBBit @ May 3, 2017 -> 01:03 PM) Mid June is conservative, safe treatment but you'd be correct as Moncada has 31 service days I wasn't considering. Even if the money is immaterial in the grade scheme of things, I still think it could be prudent financially and forh is development to hold him down til mid July. I think his strike out rate gives a good enough reason to let him keep pounding Charlotte for a while at least. His numbers have been improving, but it hasn't been the point where it looks as if he has nothing to learn there either. Learn something from a guy like Gordon Beckham who looked ready, but probably wasn't all along.

5/3 Games
QUOTE (raBBit @ May 3, 2017 -> 12:52 PM) Sox guarantee another service year by waiting til about the third week of May. They would guarantee lesser salaries if they wait til mid June to avoid Super 2. If they wait til then, he's cheaper later and the ML team is probably going to lose more games which is probably a positive. Isn't that the usual Super 2 deadline? Would you have to add another month to it because of his service time from his call up last year?

2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
QUOTE (raBBit @ May 3, 2017 -> 12:36 PM) Cubs rotation is kind of scary. Arrieta - Has been great but is a FA. Lester - Just 2 QS in 6 outings. More walks, less swings and misses. Lackey - Now the 5th oldest player in the league. Hendricks - Doubling the walks, doubling the homers and a .227 BABIP has aided him to a 4.18 ERA. Smoke and mirrors up. Anderson - Hasn't gotten hurt yet but he sucks now. On the farm, they have Eddie Butler and Williams Perez backing them up. Pierce Johnson is a reliever now. UUUUUUUUGly. And the returning group all pitched an extra month last year.

2017 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 3, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) I still have no idea why Tim Kaine was Clinton's VP. Who the hell was he supposed to appeal to? Knowing the Clintons, he was probably put there so that he wouldn't attract attention, good or bad.

5/3 Games
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ May 3, 2017 -> 11:32 AM) This is the truth. He is a work in progress. It was widely known that the Nats messed with his mechanics, and that is when his struggles began, with spin rate and other things. The Sox are trying to get Giolito back to where he was mechanically when he was the top pitching prospect in baseball. If he didn't have this issue, it is unlikely he could have been had in trade for Eaton, or even Sale. Giolito has admitted in interviews that he's "in between" the Nats mechanics and where the Sox want him currently. The Nats also seemed really anxious to put Giolitto into a deal and trade him over the winter too, so who knows what they know that we don't.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (raBBit @ May 3, 2017 -> 12:28 PM) This and we should be rooting for the Tigers and Royals. If Tigers fall out and make Verlander available... Royals could sell off Moutstakas, Cain and relievers. Sounds like Verlander and Miggy could have already been had heading into last winter.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 3, 2017 -> 12:09 PM) The Dodgers & Cardinals come to mind, but your points still stands. However, that's more of an issue of constrained demand due to a high ask. From a supply perspective, there shouldn't be many TOR starters available and hopefully none that are cost-controlled. There will be plenty of teams pursing Quintana whether they can ultimately meet the high asking price. The same does not apply to Gonzalez & Holland. If those markets get saturated, we're going to struggle to get much of anything for them. If we're smart, we should take advantage of the fact that we're one of a handful of teams not trying to compete and start selling the fringe pieces early. Plus a back of the rotation starter (one that isn't going to be impactful in October) is much more valuable to buyers in early June than late July. I really think it's key to set the market before teams like the Royals, who may hold off selling until they're certain they're out of the race, join the fray. SP is always in demand, more so with the two additional playoff teams.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (bmags @ May 3, 2017 -> 10:27 AM) If you all are interested in beating this dead horse more, I do think that the trade market is looking worse. I think there will be a lot of pitching on the market to the few dominant teams thus far. But with injuries, Sox may have an advantage if MiGo and Holland continue pitching well to package Q with a 5th starter a la the Smarj/Hammel trade. Even if only one of them pitch well, it gives the Sox an option in the not excessively expensive part of the deadline market to offer to teams.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ May 3, 2017 -> 08:01 AM) Q's ERA is now 4.10 and his WHIP is 1.31. It's May 3rd. He'll be fine and get the Sox a haul whenever they trade him. That escalated quickly.
